  • Barretts on the Byres Road used to be good for foreign mags and papers, but that was a few years ago. You'd probably get some at the airport but that's out of the way and you can't travel there at the moment anyhow. I have [Pressreader](https://www.pressreader.com/catalog/spanish/news) and I know you said you don't want to read on your phone they have facsimile versions so its just like reading the paper version. Better on an iPad or bigger screen of course. Anyway they do have a lot of Spanish papers including El Pais and ABC. Its a few quid a month but probably cheaper than paying for an import copy. Plus you get to read them all! by DaveNGlasgow (Thu 10th Dec 2020 9:06am)

  • Survey should report on the state of the roof, exterior of building and common areas as well. Right enough they will only say they didn't actually go up on the roof but you should get an idea if it needs a lot of work. A new roof could easily be 10s of thousands. Most tenements are held together by sticking plaster. Nobody want to do any proper work because of the cost. So roof leak, get a wee patch and then leak somewhere else. Same with gutters, painting and stonework. And if the building is listed... by DaveNGlasgow (Thu 24th Dec 2020 3:18pm)

  • I don't know if any still do or it was just a thing where I used to live but builders merchants used to sell second-hand bricks for this exact reason. Chances of getting that exact maker I'd say were low, there used to be loads of small brickworks. I'd start with builders merchants (although not the big national firms) then demolition companies who, even if they won't sell direct, to you will tell you where you can get some. by DaveNGlasgow (Fri 5th Mar 2021 11:20am)

  • All of those providers run over the Openreach network so, no, as far as speed goes, they will all be the same. What it comes down to is customer service, quality of router they provide, how much they stiff you once the 'introductory' period ends. BTW, there are many more ISPs. Personally I like Zen [https://www.zen.co.uk](https://www.zen.co.uk). You'll pay a few quid more but get really good service and a nice router. If you want to save money have a look on the price comparison places. But, y'know... Also do you know the phone number or address of where you are going? If you put the address in here [https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome](https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome) it will tell you the speed you should get and if FTTP is available. I recommend the MOT station in Whiteinch, I can't remember their name, they're on South Street. They only do MOTs, no servicing or repairs. They have no reason to see you fail. • Gonna disagree having lived and driven in London. There are unwritten rules on the road in London which most Londoners seem to understand. Stuff like merging in turn, letting a car out of a junction when both roads are busy. Those rules don't exist in Glasgow and it took me a while to work that out. Basically everyone drives like a cunt here. by DaveNGlasgow (Tue 8th Jun 2021 1:01pm)

Our control centre will attempt to reset the network remotely to restore power in stages, and our emergency response team are on their way to the area to investigate and repair the fault. Our team will work to get your power back on as quickly and as safely as possible by 10:30pm. Once they arrive, or when we receive any update regarding the cause, we will be able to provide you with more information. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. • Traffic lights are a Glasgow wide issue. When I came to the city a few years ago I was shocked by the amount of people who'd run red lights. I was used to London driving and you'd think that would be cut throat. Eventually I worked out if you don't go through a red you get stuck for an age. There are few red light cameras, no police so why not. Its as if none of the lights have ever been retimed to take account of changes in traffic. I know that from the lights at the bottom of my street. They look as if they are controlled by a sensor on the lights, but you can wait and wait and wait on a red while the main road stays green and empty of traffic. BTW, I don't go through on a red, not even an amber. by DaveNGlasgow (Sun 25th Jul 2021 9:15pm)
  • Some have sensors on top, you'll have plenty of time to look next time you're at a red light. Others have induction loops in the road. Those sense a car waiting and if a car stops short, not on the loop, the lights won't change. Well, that's in other cities, maybe no Glasgow... by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 26th Jul 2021 1:21pm)

  • Get someone in to refurb the original windows. They can be draft proofed. If you replace them with uPVC they'll look like shite (which is why you can't in a conservation area or in a listed building) and they'll need redoing again in a few years. (Unlike wooden windows, you can't just adjust them or replace a part unless you have the \_correct\_ part. And they won't pay for themselves. Draft proofing your current windows will. by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 30th Aug 2021 1:30pm)

I'm just saying, hybrids aren't the green solution evert salesman wants you to believe. They will allow people to continue to drive fossil fuel cars for longer than the government want though. by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 6th Dec 2021 11:07am)
  • No, I have real life experience. Sorry, there hasn't been any kind of scientific peer reviewed study carried out on my vehicle or driving. I can tell you what the car tells me. I can tell you what my MPG app says every time I fill up. On average over three years a bit over 60 MPG for all types of driving. by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 6th Dec 2021 11:14am)
  • No, I honestly can't be arsed. If you don't believe me you don't believe me. Cars have come a long way since 2011, 60 MPG diesel cars are easy to come by today. by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 6th Dec 2021 11:20am)
  • Sorry, too many downvotes for simple and serious points, questions. I'll FOAD now which is a win for you. by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 6th Dec 2021 12:05pm)
  • I think it does happen a lot and that's a problem. Two things (after price) stop people buying an EV. Range anxiety and the lack of charging points. Range is improving but you still need to top up 'on the road'. So if you look at the maps and see most points are currently occupied, or that in your local car park you see the same cars parked all day, that's not going to encourage you. Are train station chargers really meant to be used by one car a day? I bet they're there because its a car park and there are subsidies etc to have one. Same as in a shopping centre car park. There you should be in and out in a couple of hours which is enough to get you topped up. by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 6th Dec 2021 12:34pm)
  • Unhelpful, but in London a black cab can't refuse you once you're inside the cab. Stand by the door and you ask, sit inside and you tell. Had many a grumpy driver... by DaveNGlasgow (Thu 9th Dec 2021 11:11am)
  • Yes, those are the details. I think Heathrow is included, even though it's not in Greater London. I once really pissed off a cab driver at Heathrow... by DaveNGlasgow (Thu 9th Dec 2021 3:43pm)
  • To the freight terminal. Other side of the airport (I arrived in by Tube). Much detailed expletives about how long he'd been queued up on the rank (a few hours) and I want to go ten minutes around the perimeter. by DaveNGlasgow (Thu 9th Dec 2021 3:57pm)
  • I think most people have no idea how council tax is geared. Putting it up 10% does not result in 10% more money to spend. by DaveNGlasgow (Fri 10th Dec 2021 2:09pm)
  • Councils are going to hike council tax massively, Just before the local elections? by DaveNGlasgow (Fri 10th Dec 2021 2:08pm)
  • Gap have a good range of sizes, although I'm only looking at waist. But they do have smaller sizes than in the usual shops. Also they do odd sizes. Odd numbers, not weird. by DaveNGlasgow (Fri 10th Dec 2021 3:41pm)

  • Stair in B listed building + conservation area. New trunking but council made them paint it to match tiles. Any work may need to be signed off by the conservation officer. by DaveNGlasgow (Tue 14th Dec 2021 9:42am)
  • Albert Drive on the Southside. Largest South Asian population in Scotland. There was one place selling 'home style' curries, mostly take away. It may have gone but there are plenty others. by DaveNGlasgow (Mon 20th Dec 2021 3:29pm)
