  • bell ringing is just a polite way of alerting other people to the fact there's a cyclist wishing to pass them. It's not the equivalent of blaring a horn in a car. by Goosefinger (Sun 29th Mar 2020 3:54pm)
  • I've been using my ironing board as a standing desk. Just need space for a laptop and a notepad. Works fine. Fist time it's been used in about a decade! by Goosefinger (Sun 29th Mar 2020 3:59pm)
  • Phone the council and explain. I think LA's have been given grants from government to help with council tax shortfalls by Goosefinger (Tue 31st Mar 2020 4:09pm)
  • I saw it too last night. Think it was Jupiter as too high in the sky to be Venus. by Goosefinger (Tue 7th Apr 2020 9:02am)

  • I'd recommend trying to find a Cycle Skills course (run by Cycling Scotland) , sometimes they are free to access... or you can register interest for a family session on their website : https://www.cycling.scot/what-we-do/training They teach new and returning riders how to cycle on the road, navigate junctions etc As far as infrastructure maps go, Cycle Streets is quite good: https://m.cyclestreets.net/ To plan routes i use Komoot, you can set your preferences to "tour, road, mtb, gravel " etc depending on what sort of riding you want to do, and it works out routes based on previous rider's routes. I use it as Sat Nav on my bike https://www.komoot.com/plan by Goosefinger (Sat 28th Nov 2020 1:43am)

  • Please report your concerns to social services; if it's true they're being kept in the flat for months on end that is inhumane and cruel, no matter how well intentioned the parents might be. by Goosefinger (Fri 12th Feb 2021 10:04pm)
  • We've lost our space on the streets to parked cars... private property left in public spaces. by Goosefinger (Wed 3rd Mar 2021 9:57pm)
  • Are they celebrating or rioting? It's hard to tell... by Goosefinger (Sat 6th Mar 2021 8:10pm)
  • I've lived here for 10 years (in the Village). Only meant to stay 2 years but realised EK was perfect for my needs. 35mins into Glasgow in the train, 1 hr drive to Edinburgh. Just a few miles south and you have miles and miles of country roads/windfarm. I cycle a lot (though I have a car too) and getting around isn't too bad, the council are currently increasing their cycling provision with some properly segregated cycle lanes. That said, I have never used the bus in EK (because I just cycle instead). You need to be pretty brave on certain roads and know how to cycle assertively. All the shops you need, and good roads/rail out of the place. Houses all look the same but marginally cheaper than other places (though that's changing the last few months). Streets designed in the 50s are car-centric but the planners didn't provide for normal working people to have cars, so pavement parking is a nightmare. It's a lot colder (and windy-er) than everywhere else due to the altitude (530 ft) which is another consideration... cycling home from Glasgow gets you fit! It has a theatre, arts centre, huge shopping centre (like everywhere thats suffering though). Parks (Calderglen is lovely), more takeaways than you can shake a kebab at and all the concrete you could ever wish for. by Goosefinger (Tue 20th Apr 2021 10:07am)
  • This isn't a Sustrans project though, is it? Think its the council. Maybe they will partner with Sustrans to design infrastructure but I don't thinkbits being initiated by them... by Goosefinger (Sun 6th Jun 2021 12:36am)
  • Ah, protecting the youth against the dangers of playing with old banjo strings. Public service indeed! (No, I have no clue what you're on about 😁) by Goosefinger (Tue 27th Jul 2021 9:41pm)
  • Come to think of it, a lot of the kids at my school got the train in, and we all used it to go into town... Still can't believe they showed us actual dead chopped up children to stop us being wee fannies though! by Goosefinger (Tue 27th Jul 2021 10:18pm)
  • Oooh, I remember that book! The Quentin Blake drawings were perfect. Don't know if Roald Dahl wrote it, but that's not important. Thanks for the memory! Edit: yes, it was the "Roald Dahl's Guide to Railway Safety". Just looked it up. by Goosefinger (Tue 27th Jul 2021 10:20pm)
  • Ah, I remember those videos too... Still traumatic but not "hey kids! Don't dick about near trains or you'll end up chopped into pieces" traumatic. Pretty sure one boy in my class fainted at a cat giving birth in biology video. by Goosefinger (Tue 27th Jul 2021 10:38pm)
  • Crucial crew rings a vague bell... I must have blocked it out. Thanks for validating my traumatic memories! by Goosefinger (Tue 27th Jul 2021 10:40pm)
  • Ooft, primary school, brutal! I'm exactly with you. It's been plaguing me for years and I'm 40. by Goosefinger (Wed 28th Jul 2021 8:38am)
  • Thanks. I'm pretty sure it was BTP who came in, and I also think that perhaps they went into detail recounting incidents they'd been to as well as pictures of dead kids. We were 12. Took me ages to be able to catch the train after that by Goosefinger (Wed 28th Jul 2021 8:43am)
  • That's horrendous, sorry you were made to see that. Totally inappropriate to show that to kids. by Goosefinger (Wed 28th Jul 2021 8:40am)
  • Christ.... I've actually been in that situation (years ago I was in the police) and we had wee bams dropping bricks off a bridge onto a road. Went to the local secondary school and a colleague basically shouted at a year group for 10 minutes. So I understand the need to communicate the danger to kids, and the frustration behind it, but wish there was a better way. by Goosefinger (Wed 28th Jul 2021 8:48am)
  • Also not possible when you work full time! I'm lucky in that my employer is really reasonable letting me work flexibly to view properties, but more than 2 viewings a week world really start to be a problem. by Goosefinger (Sat 31st Jul 2021 9:54am)

  • Omg, was it a big mad clock with golden painted things and carved gnomes or something on it that moved about like MAGIC on the quarter-hour, or was I just aff ma tits as a wean..? Crazy memories just uncovered! by Goosefinger (Sat 2nd Oct 2021 12:19am)
  • Heard an ad on the radio this morning from First Bus looking for trainee drivers. Couple of voices saying how AMAZING AND FUN it was to work there. Sounded desperate. by Goosefinger (Wed 13th Oct 2021 10:49pm)
  • Can confirm, in order to cross bridge you need to climb a fence. I couldn't do that with my bike. I wrote to East Ren's Access Officer to complain about it as I believe it may contravene the Land Reform Act (Scotland). There's an on- going case with the landowner refusing to allow access. If you want to ask for the bridge to be made accessible you can email East Renfrewshire outlining the problems/dangerous alternative routes. I ended up having to cycle Aurs Road, which is terrifying and a complete death trap. Services.customer@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk by Goosefinger (Fri 14th Jan 2022 8:04pm)

  • Glasgow born and bred , female , 40's - the only times this has happened to me it's' been junkies trying it on. Pretty rare occurence now I'm a bit older, too - and not in the city as much as I used to be. Perhaps it's the "don't even bother starting" demeanour I've perfected over the years ... by Goosefinger (Sat 22nd Jul 2023 12:14pm)
