  • Good point- I asked about the agency/landlord and the tenants said they’ve been fine in terms of repairs and maintenance. I got the vibe that it was more the landlord turning a blind eye to the fact that they’re not actually couples but I’m definitely still worried about my rights as a tenant. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Wed 16th Jun 2021 2:32pm)
  • Heya- I checked and I’m definitely liable for council tax over the summer period when I wasn’t a matriculated student by LongjumpingOwl3 (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 3:43pm)
  • The council website says that you still need to apply for the exemption even if your uni sends proof of student status automatically. I had the same issues trying to contact the council! They have a live chat feature which took ages to get connected to an agent on but once I got through they were really helpful and approved the student exemption the next day! by LongjumpingOwl3 (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 3:41pm)
  • Right, thank you that’s really helpful! I’m still shocked that she’s been living here for 6 months and never thought she’s have to register for council tax. She’s been good about paying for other bills so I think she’s just a bit clueless when it comes to council tax specifically. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 11:16pm)
  • Right we’re both students now so we won’t have to pay. The issue was that she had never filed for the student exemption or even let the council know she was living there in the first place. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 24th Sep 2021 10:44am)
  • Yeah according to the council website her uni automatically notifies the council but she still needs to apply for the exemption. I’ve sorted out the bills from when I moved in but do you thinks it’s worth getting my flatmate to contact the council and explain that she didn’t apply for the exemption before I moved in but that she was a student during that period? I just don’t want our landlords to get an unexpected bill from the council if the council was under the impression that the flat was unoccupied before I moved in when that isn’t the case by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 24th Sep 2021 8:47pm)
  • Right but before I moved in my flatmate had never registered with the council that she lived in the flat and thus was not getting any council tax letters/bills. Since council tax is for the property and not an individual surely the council would then default to billing my landlords since from the councils perspective the flat was unoccupied?? by LongjumpingOwl3 (Sat 25th Sep 2021 3:29pm)
  • Could I get that link too? :) by LongjumpingOwl3 (Tue 6th Sep 2022 2:37pm)
  • The unis trying to avoid responsibility by telling students not to travel to Glasgow without having accommodation secured but obviously not being here makes finding accommodation even more difficult. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 16th Sep 2022 6:01pm)

  • Just a quick clarification- spouse visas are for partners of British citizens. You would instead be able to apply as a dependent under your wife’s student visa (https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/family-members). Just wanted to point that out to prevent you going down the rabbit hole of requirements a spouse visa entails. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 6:11pm)

  • If your budget allows, there are companies that can act as a UK based guarantor. UoG can also act as a guarantor in some circumstances: https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/registry/finance/funds/rentguarantorscheme/ by LongjumpingOwl3 (Thu 23rd Feb 2023 9:20pm)
  • Is he not eligible for a Graduate visa? That would buy him two years to find a sponsor. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 3rd Mar 2023 3:11pm)
  • Just to clarify, a graduate scheme and a graduate visa are completely separate things. You can work in any job with a graduate visa. I know many people who went from a student visa to a graduate visa to a skilled worker visa. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 3rd Mar 2023 6:58pm)
  • If it’s not already listed on their website, I’d recommend that he emails graduate recruitment before applying anywhere to clarify their stance towards visa sponsorship/graduate visa suitability. I did this when applying for jobs and it saved me so much time. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 3rd Mar 2023 7:07pm)
  • It’s closed to non-GU students right now for exam season. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Wed 19th Apr 2023 1:25pm)
  • Ah yeah I completely get that! It’s getting so common to just ghost unsuccessful candidates. I think what’s irked me in this case specifically is that the portal updates after the application is looked over so theoretically I should’ve gotten a rejection once that happened instead of hearing nothing. I have a couple of friends who applied for these internships too and all of theirs also say they’ve been submitted but not yet reviewed so its just given us the impression that these applications aren’t being reviewed at all in the 2 months they’ve been pending :/ by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 12th May 2023 11:20pm)
  • Ah okay that’s good to know. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Fri 12th May 2023 11:50pm)
  • Same thing happened to me today. I’ve had my student bus pass for nearly a year and have never been asked to show my student ID alongside it before today. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Tue 15th Aug 2023 5:38pm)
  • Totally get that it’s company policy to show the student ID but it seems rather silly for the drivers to enforce it if 99% of the other drivers don’t bother checking it. by LongjumpingOwl3 (Wed 16th Aug 2023 6:00pm)
