  • Lads, just let people be happy with what makes them happy. If people get enough enjoyment out of such a small thing to want to wait in a queue for it, that's cool. Not saying its great food or whatever, but they aren't cunts or cretins, they're just people who want a burger. Let em be. In these challenging times and all that. by Lugubo (Wed 3rd Jun 2020 12:17am)
  • Yeah, that's the only part that got to me. But the queue was moving constantly, so it's not like there was another option. by Lugubo (Thu 4th Jun 2020 8:58am)
  • Not disagreeing with anything you say. If it were up to me, city centres would be bikes, public transport and low emissions only. But we aren't there yet. by Lugubo (Thu 4th Jun 2020 3:36pm)
  • Don't read this as an attack on NHS staff, because they are clearly the MVPs, but I find these lists quite dispiriting. I'm a social care worker who's been going out in the community, thereby putting myself and those I live with at risk, throughout the lockdown. The work my organisation does is essential, and involves very close contact with people at risk of infection, during the worst public health crisis in a generation. Even when PPE provision was laughable, we did the best we could. There has still been no word on testing for staff. Our efforts got us all a one-time £50 bonus, along with a 30p 'raise' which conveniently conformed our wage to the minimum requirement previously agreed between my org and the Scottish government. That they tried to pass this off as a magnanimous gesture, and somehow linked to the pandemic, was beyond insulting. Anyway, everytime I see these lists I get a bit sad, because me and my living wage colleagues out here in the social care sector are basically forgotten. Meanwhile my bro, who's an orthopedic surgeon, gets tasty discounts left and right. At least the Halfords one is nice, if only because most of us can't afford to run a car. Mini-rant over, back to work. Edit: nevermind, no free Halfords stuff either. by Lugubo (Thu 16th Jul 2020 1:31pm)
  • You're right, and it's all an easier pill to swallow if you read these discounts and freebies as a PR exercise for the companies, rather than a good-faith attempt to 'give back'. As for conditions in the care sector, the ones who suffer the most in all this aren't actually the workers, but the supported people. Staff turnover is unreal, and while you can't blame anyone for leaving, those we work for have to deal with an endless flux of well-meaning strangers waltzing in and out of their private lives month after month, all because providers have no incentive to turn frontline care work into a viable long-term career. by Lugubo (Thu 16th Jul 2020 2:18pm)
  • I'm sorry man, that sucks. Put yourself first. And remember that your employers will never place more worth on your role than they have in these past few months. Whatever extra recognition and reward we're seeing (or not seeing) right now *is* the high water mark for social care. by Lugubo (Thu 16th Jul 2020 3:37pm)
  • Say what you like, donuts there are delicious, cheap and fresh. Like, they fry them after they take your order. Nice folk too. by Lugubo (Wed 21st Oct 2020 6:58pm)
  • In exactly the same boat. Postgrad course, work like a madman over the breaks in social care, and do more shifts than I should during the semester just to keep up with the costs of living in my current place. Was thinking like you that I could go down the flatmate route...but it's literally £100 less than a full flat in some cases, for shared grotty bathroom and kitchen and a tiny cupboard some "developer" has decided they can sell as a "stunning studio for young professionals". But keep the faith buddy. We'll find something eventually. by Lugubo (Sat 28th May 2022 8:18pm)
  • Yeah, I've been looking at this. Trouble is a lot of the places offering "mid-market" I actually fall short of the minimum salary required for consideration, even when you add student loan for cost of living into the equation. Like...so I'm on social housing now? As an able-bodied young(ISH) person in work? Seems odd. by Lugubo (Sat 28th May 2022 8:20pm)
