I’d especially recommend the meatballs, empadamas or whatever they’re called, the black beans (if you like beans) and prawns. • If it wasn’t cost effective they wouldn’t do it ya clown and fundraising is how shelter makes the majority of its money by MrDrVlox (Tue 27th Dec 2022 6:38pm)
  • Shelter is an hourly wage, they do an incentive every once in a while like “whoever gets 3 signs ups gets £40” or something but the number of sign ups you get does not affect your wage so if someone signs up on the door all the money goes the helping people by MrDrVlox (Tue 27th Dec 2022 6:36pm)
  • So I actually work for shelter and can give a bit of insight, also do you remember the names or looks of who it was because it’s quite funny seeing this here. We get a flat hourly wage so whether or not you sign up with someone at the door it doesn’t give us commission so all the money of your donation goes directly to the charity. We get paid because it’s a proper job with long hours. But they are a very good employer and there are a lot of good parts (and a lot of stairs) It’s a direct debit like you said so the payment is set up by a third party with your bank and takes 2-6 weeks to process and you can stop it any time. It’s all legit and is a very cool thing to do (you can just go on the website) by MrDrVlox (Tue 27th Dec 2022 6:43pm)
  • It’s not any more cost effective when you donate via the website or with the person at the door because shelter have a fixed wage Don’t make mindless assumptions and think you know more about charities than the people who work for them Clown by MrDrVlox (Wed 28th Dec 2022 12:32am)
  • We don’t have our own buildings we put people in we more focus on making the government do their job because dealing with this is their job. Obvs that’s pretty difficult but we’ve changed over 10 laws in the last 10 years and have beat the government in corrupt several times including Glasgow City Council on 2019. We give people free legal advice and legal representation to prevent them from becoming homeless in the first place and for people in the streets we get them into council housing within 6 weeks. If you want to learn more about what shelter does the website and weirdly enough the YouTube channel are both great for that. If you want to donate it is one of the best tenners you can spend and you can just go on the website to do so. If you do it for a couple months at worst you help a few people keep their homes but if you can do it for longer it’s a great way in being a part of change that is actually going somewhere by MrDrVlox (Wed 28th Dec 2022 1:35pm)
  • If I chap on someone’s door and talk to them for a while and they decide they want to help, them doing it on the website vs me at the door doesn’t save the charity money and if anything it makes it worse because then the fundraiser is actually working hard and doing a good job but their manager won’t see it and they could be sacked. Going door to door and working on the street isn’t just about getting sign ups it’s about reaching out to people and spreading awareness about the charity. Talking to people about what we do and not just putting sad statistics on ads. If shelter didn’t pay people to chap doors hardly anyone would choose to donate on their own but if they see the ads, see the shops and then talk to someone that’s what gets it done and signing up on the door means something actually happens and given the amount of people suffering in the streets I don’t see why wanting to help should be controversial. When people give to charities they typically give to ones related to problems they have dealt with or care about like cancer research or cats or something. The people that think of housing and homelessness are people who have dealt with housing and homelessness problems and they typically can’t afford to give. Face to face fundraising is literally the most important tool to change that and is what keeps people in their homes, with heat, with their kids able to go to school etc. I don’t see what you gain from fear mongering when there is so much to lose. If you wouldn’t sign up on a door because you wouldn’t feel comfortable then absolutely do not do it but discouraging other people is nothing but harmful by MrDrVlox (Wed 28th Dec 2022 1:45pm)
  • Dude if the charity didn’t make money from it then it wouldn’t continue to do so. For every £1 shelter spends on fundraising that generates around £4.50 https://scotland.shelter.org.uk/about_us/our_finances Face to face fundraising is how the charity reaches out to people and it’s not just about getting sign ups. Loads of people I’ve spoken have been having housing problems and can now get help because they were able to talk to someone. Others have had their rent put up recently and didn’t know it was illegal etc. Fundraising makes up the overwhelming majority of shelters income I have no idea why you think you know better than the fundraisers, the managers and the directors about their own organisation? Fundraisers are meant to get around 0.2-0.25 sign ups an hour and they become profitable over time because the focus is on long term donors so if you work 100 hours and get 25 sign ups and then you work another 100 hours and get 25 sign ups it’s all cumulative. Did you really think that you knew better than everyone? by MrDrVlox (Wed 28th Dec 2022 6:21pm)
  • ?? If 10 people become homeless a day would you say it’s better to house one of them or make it so that 2 people are becoming homeless a day by protecting people and their families from the stress and trauma to begin with? Like the laws we’ve changed help people. For example the deposit protection scheme in Scotland so landlords can’t steal your deposit or no bedroom tax in Scotland. Giving people free legal advice means that disadvantaged people have someone in their corner and keeping the government in check keeps them accountable. With the example of Glasgow city council we beat them in court because they were illegally rejecting housing applications which left people dying on the street. For things to get better legal change is the way forward so that people have these rights but 66% of homeless people that get help from us get a home. Obviously there are charities that house people themselves and giving to them is an amazing thing to do but it’s all a part of the same fight by MrDrVlox (Thu 29th Dec 2022 7:39pm)
  • Because Salvation Army spend more on advertising instead and also have greater appeal to a wider and wealthier audience. Nobody is pressured into anything because first of all 1. It doesn’t work 2. It’s illegal and shelter is heavily regulated by the institute of fundraising 3. If you signed up and changed your mind you can cancel it instantly, the point is to get people who do it for a long time because they want to. If they don’t want to or can’t afford it nobody wants to sign them up. Your statement about which doors get knocked on is absolute mince. We chap high dem to schemes. High dem is usually over done and wealthier people generally are much more hesitant to help others because they’ll think hours and hours about giving money to someone but will buy pointless shit without a second thought. That being said high dem is often the most sought after group because while you meet a lot of pricks if they do sign up they’re a lot more likely to do it for a lot longer. Especially if they came from a different background but are now doing better. Like I said before for every £1 spend on fundraising shelter gets £4.50 so why you’d want to cut back is beyond me. Further still, why you’re trying to give advice on managing a huge organisation is even more ridiculous. I don’t have a conflict of interest I’m a student and this is a job I do because it’s a lot better than hospitality. The main difference here is that I actually know what I’m on about. If you don’t want your door knocked you can put up a sticker and it’s illegal for us to knock. I don’t get why you’re more upset at shelter for helping millions of people but having to interact with the public to do so than you are about the millions of people struggling to keep and heat their homes. Child homelessness in Scotland is the worst it’s ever been, when the rent freeze and eviction ban ends it’ll only get worse, housing in Glasgow is a mess and your problem is that shelter asks people for money? by MrDrVlox (Thu 29th Dec 2022 7:53pm)

  • I mean, only if you really need to? If not I’d say no because they’d probably be better off being able to save up more rather than it just being pocket money for you by MrDrVlox (Sun 5th Mar 2023 10:20am)
  • Surely it’s better for them to learn how to save up on their own though without you doing it for them and giving it back (and even if you do that then it’s not paying digs that’s just keeping a budget for your children) and past a certain age that’s just delaying a problem instead of managing it. by MrDrVlox (Sun 5th Mar 2023 4:36pm)
  • I mean tbh little variations in how you teach finance don’t actually matter than much tbh. Main thing as actually trying to teach it so fair enough by MrDrVlox (Sun 5th Mar 2023 4:45pm)

  • They are actually mental. Often dodgy landlords, the hallways are a bit grim sometimes and you really want to know your housing rights. Often problems with broken shit or mould but it can also be completely fine. It’s a lot of different people though and Police and prostitutes used to be there all the time, maybe less often now though. Check out shelter Scotland for Details about your housing rights and if there are ever any problems you can call the helpline for free housing advice and legal help. Big or small problems. by MrDrVlox (Thu 20th Apr 2023 9:54am)
  • Is there anything similar in edi? by MrDrVlox (Sun 23rd Apr 2023 1:16am)
  • Tbh im a student and i live in govan and i love my wee bit. Im right next to elder park, surprisingly decent buses (by glasgow standards anywhere else theyre shite), lidl 2 mins away, a lovely wee local bakery around the corner, a fantastic gym across the road and just a few gems dotted about. The junkies and other tits that seep out at times are by no means ideal but theyre not definitive. And almost all the people ill meet and chat to are actually really nice or funny and i work as a door to door fundraiser so im meeting everyone by MrDrVlox (Mon 24th Apr 2023 1:28am)
  • Yeah its linthouse and its a bit nicer but its not exactly far from govan. And govan itself has a lot of nice shops and cafes by MrDrVlox (Mon 24th Apr 2023 1:46am)

  • There are wild swimming clubs that do it year round and in the summer it can be nice too! There are some nice beaches like Arbroath but for fresh water loch morlich is lovely. Id avoid loch ness its just a massive tourist trap that is way more expensive for not a lot unless youre all about the loch mess monster by MrDrVlox (Sat 29th Apr 2023 12:21pm)
  • Nah sod that people should just not be pricks but when the trailers are 30 mind or youre meeting your friends there, sorting out plans after etc signal blocking causes even more problems. by MrDrVlox (Sun 30th Apr 2023 7:31pm)
  • Contact shelter scotland, they deal with these problems all the time. Your landlord will try say its out of their hands and will come up with excuses but shelter can contact them for you and threaten legal action (same with the mice) Suddenly your landlord will be able to fix the problem in the next couple days lmao by MrDrVlox (Tue 16th May 2023 1:25pm)
  • If youre giving people signals that might help or if you make the first move that would likely be appreciated. Making eye contract multiple times, smiling, even more obvious stuff will all work by MrDrVlox (Tue 27th Jun 2023 10:34pm)

  • Be quick because students are also looking rn. Go spare room, be proactive af and call letting agents and be on them like butter on toast with getting viewings and deposits by MrDrVlox (Sat 19th Aug 2023 1:22pm)
  • I disagree tbh finding a flatmate then a place is usually easier because the listings looking for just a roommate get a silly amount of reaponses these days Defo do both tho by MrDrVlox (Sat 19th Aug 2023 1:21pm)
  • Id just live in a cheaper part of edi tbh and deal with a “worse” flat. Having a super nice flat is overrated and living in a less studenty generic area can actually be really amazing with cheaper and more interesting shops, pubs, people you wouldnt normally meet etc by MrDrVlox (Sat 30th Sep 2023 11:29am)
