  • Snappy Snaps on Byres road still do film processing, also seem to do pretty good quality scans. Looks like it can use fairly standard black and white developers like ilfosol. You could do it yourself even if you wanted, you can get all the supplies at merchant city cameras on parnie street. They even sell the enlarger paper if you wanted to down that route too. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 16th Sep 2019 2:06am)
  • The current powers that be if they do have that power in glasgow don't seem to ever use it. Seems that more and more historical buildings like this are just left to waste away. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 21st Sep 2019 11:39pm)
  • It's called the Egyptian Halls. It's owned by some guy who bought it in order to fix it up then he proceeded to do nothing under the assumption that the government would eventually pay him to renovate it and he'd get a free hotel out of it. You can find google street view of it without the scaffolding if you're interested. • It really is, I think that EK might have the world record for most shopping centre ground per person for a town. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Tue 5th May 2020 2:49pm)
  • Think they get swept more often. It's clear that a lot of glasgow's money goes into that area when you have a good long wonder around there. I still don't think I have seen a single street sweeper or guy picking up litter on the street I live on. (fly tipping is also getting out of hand where I live) by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sun 17th May 2020 7:17pm)
  • I think the Brew 74 near the Morrisons in East Kilbride is currently just asking for the police to shut them down. Went by there a couple of days ago and it was like they were trying to have a big house party within a space the size of a small flat kitchen. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sun 12th Jul 2020 7:46pm)

  • I could be wrong in saying this but fairly sure I read here they they were stopping doing the food waste bin collection completely but they didn't send anything out to tell people. (just sent something out on social media and their app or something like that) by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 8th Aug 2020 10:28pm)
  • You aren't kidding. Had to walk on the road in order to get from my flat to Shops on Paisley Road West. Seems that most pavements in the cessnock area haven't been gritted with the exception of Main roads. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 6th Jan 2021 11:45am)
  • I know B&Q cut boards and timber to size but never seen them plane something thinner. As for getting a joiner in to do it, might be what I end up doing but seems a bit extreme for what should just be drilling and screwing 2 boards into the sides of this cupboard. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sun 31st Jan 2021 3:09pm)

  • I don't think sagging will be a problem in this case, I'm more concerned about the screws holding the rail to the board ripping the board apart or ripping themselves out the board. Probably easier to explain with a photo. https://photos.app.goo.gl/S4AMi5f4GoK2qe159 The boards will go in the place of the 4 blocks of wood I got spacing it right now between the sides and the rails. (the wood spacers were just for me checking my measurements) As for how much weight is likely to be on this. It will be a lot, I intend on having a fairly large server in here, a NAS, a switch, router, patch panel, a phone system (Don't ask) and maybe one day a UPS. Think that's easily 40kg as a conservative estimate, might also eventually add other equipment. Oak might be overkill with how this weight is taken up by the wood in this circumstance but in any case I'm open to other types of wood if they will get the job done. Also, know somebody is likely to ask why I aren't using the little rackmount cabinet at the bottom of the photo, main reason is that it's not deep enough. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sun 31st Jan 2021 10:37pm)
  • In the spot I'm planning in screwing it into on the sides there's a wooden beam behind the board I'm screwing into giving me about an inch and a half (if not more) of material to hold onto. I intend to use quite a lot of long screws and go into that. Think the load would be taken downward and back with how equipment is mounted. The Length of the wood I am looking for would have the end of the wood on the floor which I think would help. Think constructing a floor plate of sorts might be overkill in this circumstance especially if I keep the heaviest devices at the bottom. Also, will have a look into Central Sawmill tomorrow. If Ash is significantly cheaper then will probably go with that. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 1st Feb 2021 12:28am)
  • Sadly does need to be the entire 31mm as it goes right up both sides of the cupboard. I know it's a bit of a bodge doing it this way rather than a proper cabinet but I aim to make it a pretty clean bodge. (currently in process of chasing structured cabling into a few spots to run back to it) I did initially want to put a cabinet in my attic pretty much directly above the cupboard I am going to use but the more equipment I'm planning to add to this thing the more I realize I want easy access to it. Probably going to have some rackmount fans to get the air circulation up in this cabinet. Thankfully the sliding door isn't much of an air seal so should get plenty of air in from the front. In the end I ended up buying the wood from express timber products in paisley based on a few quotes. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 3rd Feb 2021 10:23pm)
  • Went up there once when I was a kid not long after it was built. Was really cool being so high up and being able to see the thing slowly turning. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Fri 5th Feb 2021 3:51pm)
  • Wasn't just internet, I do IT support for a company there, ISDN and analog phone lines were down too. Bloody pain in the ass. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 27th Feb 2021 5:48pm)
  • The thing with bus stops is great until you come across the bus stop at the Croftfoot roundabout co-op..... seems that half the time the bus arrives early or something and ends up sitting there for some ungodly length of time before moving on and freeing up traffic. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Fri 7th May 2021 11:37am)
  • I have never lived there but my co-workers used to work in an office on Alison street before we moved office, one story I heard from one of them is that working there was the only time they had ever seen somebody take a shit in a skip. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 19th May 2021 11:44pm)
  • Honestly think the best way they could catch fly tippers would be a bounty system. Send them a video of them doing it and if it helps catch them you get a payout. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 12th Jul 2021 1:36am)
  • There really seems to be a bad case of "not my job" when it comes to the folk doing bulk uplift, unless they're explicitly told to pick it up they will just leave it even when it's clearly fly tipped/junk and they're inevitably going to be called out again to pick it up at some point. Just makes the delays for getting stuff uplifted even worse. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 12th Jul 2021 1:42am)
  • Councils really do love pissing money away on unnecessary shit. They're planning on pedestrianizing a lot of the byres road area. I'd be ok with this if it wasn't for the fact that this will cost a fortune and they clearly aren't putting enough money into other parts of the city and their services. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 12th Jul 2021 1:49am)
  • What do you mean by wealthy suburbs being under different councils? Do you mean places like East Renfrewshire? or is this some sort of legal technicality? Also yeah council tax is a mess with how properties are taxed based on their value back in the 90s and for properties built afterwards they get charged on their new value, leaving shitholes like the Wallace street flats with super high council tax payments. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 12th Jul 2021 3:53am)
  • Yeah, the bikes thing is wildly optimistic, IMO we're never going to have enough cyclists to justify the investment in cycling infrastructure due to the bad/unpredictable rain here and the older generations almost certainly not wanting to cycle. Although I'm sure we will see every cyclist on reddit chime in about how we're wrong because some cycling orginisation says so. Personally I'd rather we invest in public transport (e.g. another subway loop although that's probably quite pie in the sky) instead of making our roads worse for the majority of people on them. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Tue 13th Jul 2021 9:29am)

  • It's mostly old tat, there's not usually any traders selling fake designer stuff in any real quantity. My dad goes there often and has brought back quite a few gems over the years. Trick seems to be getting there absurdly early as the sellers are arriving, most of the good stuff seems to go quick right as the sellers start putting out their stuff. AFAIK it's still open. Found that blochairn tends to be better if you're looking for a more reliable source of old electronics and the like though. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Tue 10th Aug 2021 3:02am)

  • Had a similar idea with some of the side streets off paisley road west. Some of them are in a proper state. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Tue 10th Aug 2021 10:43am)
  • It's great fun rolling google streetview back to 2007/8-ish and seeing all the properties that suddenly vanished around that time. Found whole neighborhoods of identical flats to the one I live in now that got demolished. To this day nothing was rebuilt there and it's just an odd grassy field in Ibrox. They looked like they were in a bit of a sorry state but judging by the one I'm in now there was nothing unrecoverable about them. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 21st Aug 2021 9:58pm)
  • Really is pretty dire. I was on holiday in France a few years ago and found myself hooked on drinking sprite. Got back and bought some and it was a massive disappointment in comparison. Fanta over here is just plain disgusting, tango is a little better but honestly no idea why anybody would willingly drink UK fanta. (Really is a mystery how the company that makes Coke Zero thought that what they call Fanta over here was ok) Really wish they'd at least give the option of the full sugar versions, you'd think the success of Irn Bru 1901 would show there was a market for it but sadly nobody else does full sugar versions of their soft drinks over here. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 12:53am)
  • Can only hope they admit it's the sugar tax and start selling their normal sugary drinks at a premium, if people wanted diet drinks they'd buy diet drinks. I can't imagine many people refusing to pay the slight premium for their soft drink to taste like it's meant to. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 1:52am)

  • Lived in the area for about a year now. (Close to the station) So far so good, my only major complaints is the littering and match days. You get the odd noisy drunk walking past the flat at night but think that's the norm for any built up area sadly. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Thu 30th Sep 2021 3:02pm)
  • Wait, have you actually been picked for the Jury? I ask as when I was cited they brought everyone into the high court and explained everything to everyone, after this they asked everyone who had an excuse for not being able to do jury service to queue up in order to speak to the staff at the front of the court room explaining their situation, most of these people were allowed to leave. Unless something has changed you should still be able to explain to the staff at the high court why you can't attend as a Juror. I didn't have an excuse and I also got unlucky as I got picked from the people that were left but was definitely an intresting experience. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 2nd Oct 2021 1:19pm)
  • Weird. Have had fairly good luck with morrisons. Only supermarket that has managed to get on my bad books consistantly is co-op. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 2nd Oct 2021 1:26pm)
  • Fair enough, nevermind then. Did know about people attending Braehead though, my sister almost had to go there for that. Didn't realize the selection process had also been adapted. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 2nd Oct 2021 5:30pm)
  • Don't usually travel by bus so didn't know how they charged. Guess that explains the absurd number of bus stops on Carmunnock road. If you actually want to practically go anywhere by bus there you're pretty much forced to pay the higher fee. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 4th Oct 2021 1:45am)

  • Doesn't surprise me this is Strathclyde uni accomidation. I stayed in some of their student accomidation for a few weeks while I was in high school, place was so cheeply put together I constantly felt like I was going to fall through the floor. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 11th Oct 2021 11:20am)
  • True, they probably have a team dedicated to searching out studies looking for reasons to weasel out of doing things. If memory serves not too long ago when they removed bins because they were overflowing they cited studies that said that less bins result in less rubbish. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 17th Nov 2021 1:34am)
  • Lol, funnily enough I will be in that screening tonight. Sadly got no use for an extra ticket. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Thu 18th Nov 2021 4:50pm)
  • Coincidentally the bins at my flat were finally collected today.... but rather suspiciously there's 3 less bins in each bin shed than there was before in the 2 bin shelters I checked. Haven't had a good hunt around for the bins yet, really hope they haven't been taken away for some contrived reason from the council. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 22nd Nov 2021 12:48pm)
  • 6 flats per bin shelter, used to be 8 green bins in the shelter. Considering that all of those green bins were usually completely full by the usual time the binmen came I really hope that they have just left them in an odd spot or something and haven't actually taken them away. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 22nd Nov 2021 2:06pm)
  • Guess that explains the incresed helicopter traffic. Seems to have shot up as of late. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 29th Nov 2021 9:50am)
  • Not entirely true, for instance we at my work have found that Sky broadband consistantly has issues with our VPN while most other ADSL/VDSL providers seem to be fairly stable with it. (had a fairly large sample size for this too as I do IT Support for a fairly large company with lots of home workers) Also level of support does vary by provider, for example with BT Business getting an engineer out is easy, if you're 100% sure you need an engineer and ask for one they will usually send one with no questions other than if you're authorised to accept possible charges in the case that the fault was with your own equipment, also their communication with the openreach engineer tends to be better than most; Meanwhile with regular home broadband or vodafone business you're often stuck with Indian call centres, long drawn out conversations on the phone while they force you to do certain troubleshooting steps that pretty much never work or will have already been tried and often your description of the fault never actually making it to the openreach engineer resulting in it taking even longer. One other thing to consider with some broadband providers, some of them don't like giving out their pppoe details for setting up a 3rd party router which many people might want to do. (there's also the matter of stuff like static IPs but probably not something most home users need/want) by ROSS_MITCHELL (Thu 2nd Dec 2021 11:08pm)
  • Used to live in Carmunnock nearby, often did shopping in croftfoot area, great chippy at the croftfoot roundabout, just avoid the co-op there if possible, I don't think I have ever left that co-op without feeling I had just been robbed with their insane prices. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Tue 14th Dec 2021 10:24pm)

  • Slaters, I'm overweight and often struggle finding stuff that fits well(everything I try in most shops is either too big or too small in some areas, suspect I'm just a slightly odd shape for a fat guy), slaters is consistantly the best choice for this, their staff are very familiar with the size and fit of all of their stock and will find something that fits well even if alterations are required. Don't think I have ever left their store empty handed. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Thu 23rd Dec 2021 8:06pm)

  • Yeah, if I saw cars going through red lights anywhere near as often as cyclists we'd probably have frequent deaths at every crossing. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 17th Jan 2022 1:08pm)
  • Stats on this are going to be misleading imo, police don't care about cyclists breaking road laws for the most part. I have watched police witness cyclists blasting through red lights on victoria road quite a few times and they haven't done anything, were it a car they'd be chasing them down sirens blazing. There's also the fact that there are far more motorists than cyclists. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 17th Jan 2022 1:13pm)
  • Yeah, I have my doubts that infrastructure improvements will make much difference. The majority of people will never want to get up super early dress in special cycling gear and cycle in the dark and pouring wet up and down hills for ages only to get to work and change into normal clothes then repeat all that at the end of a hard days work. At best you can probably get more people to take it up as a hobby but not as a primary means of transport. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 17th Jan 2022 1:20pm)
  • Honestly it's because road laws pretty much don't apply to them, police don't seem to care when a cyclists breaks road laws until it's too late. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 17th Jan 2022 1:32pm)
  • There's no difference between folk on bikes and cyclists, regardless of if they're dressed up as a full on lycra powerranger or if they're just a student trying to get to get to class they're still a cyclist. Seen road laws ignored just as often by both. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Mon 17th Jan 2022 1:36pm)
  • Funnily enough I got an image of that same clock tower at a similar angle I took on a very old 120 film camera. (on black and white film) Can pretend it's older than this. /s by ROSS_MITCHELL (Fri 11th Mar 2022 9:54am)
  • Yeah, I pay a little more than that for the mortgage on my 2 bed flat in glasgow South. My sister recently started renting in Shawlands and she's paying more than double in rent than what I do for my mortgage for a flat that's far smaller than mine(small even for a 1 bed flat) and in far worse condition. Honestly seems that if you can stay with your parents until you can afford the deposit for buying a flat you're better off doing so rather than renting. (I imagine that with the cost of renting a lot of people would struggle to save money month to month) by ROSS_MITCHELL (Fri 11th Mar 2022 11:06am)
  • Lol, I see the same thing every time I get a glance into some of my neighbours flats here, suspect I'm one of the few that actually owns their flat in my block. Would love to do some of those flats up as a lot of them seem to be pretty much blank slates. (sadly I doubt the landlords in these places would ever do that despite what their residents are likely paying) by ROSS_MITCHELL (Fri 11th Mar 2022 11:14am)
  • Got a feeling the same is going to happen with my sister but time will tell. Glad I avoided the trap of renting all together then again that just wasn't viable for me, I'd just get driven up the wall having to ask the landlord every time I wanted to something like change a light fitting or make any other significant changes. (E.g. going the integrated home automation route with my flat, current goal is single button in the hall that can turn off every light and close every blind, think I'm about half way there) by ROSS_MITCHELL (Fri 11th Mar 2022 8:54pm)
  • Seen this sort of thing happen fairly frequently. Completely defeats the purpose in pre-booking in the first place. Anyone pre-booking is doing so because they have a set plan and need a taxi to be there at the time they booked, if they don't prioritise getting to these bookings on time you'd be as well just arranging it 20mins prior. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Tue 19th Apr 2022 1:10pm)
  • The story with the Egyptian halls on Union Street is a proper scam, guy who owns the building refuses to do anything with it and insists that the government pay him to turn it into a fancy hotel or something. We really should have a mechanism for the government repossessing listed buildings if they aren't cared for properly, especially if the person who owns it has the means to do so. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sun 1st May 2022 12:34am)
  • That's great that you're willing to go that distance to throw away rubbish but good luck convincing a mob of football fans, many of whom won't use a bin even if it was a metre away from them to go to that length to throw away rubbish. Sadly the only realistic solution to an event like this is for the council to clean up afterwards instead of expecting people to be better behaved than they actually are. (obviously long term we need more bins and education in schools about littering but that wouldn't have dealt with the immediate problem) by ROSS_MITCHELL (Thu 19th May 2022 3:50pm)
  • Had the exact same experience. I was wanting picked up from hillington road after I had been working late. Ended up waiting over an hour and it never arrived. Another time they took so long that one of my co-workers noticed me still waiting around after I was meant to have left and offered me a ride home. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 8th Jun 2022 8:40pm)
  • Don't think it being a chain store makes a difference. Paisley Road West is packed by independant businesses and it's still full of rubbish. If anything I have seen more effort put in by big brands outside their stores. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 21st Sep 2022 2:13pm)
  • I agree, that'd be a good start. Think we also need to discourage littering in the first place, make a paid bounty for submitting evidence of somebody littering/fly tipping and suddenly everyone's afraid to do it. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 21st Sep 2022 2:16pm)
  • Good luck with that if your neighbour doesn't share your community spirit. I'd like a solution that actually works rather than pretending people are better than they actually are. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 21st Sep 2022 6:45pm)
  • You seem to be under the belief that your littering neighbours (you said neighbours first, not me) are going to change their ways because you said "community spirit" rather than just go on littering because they know they can get away with it. Bounties on litterers is far more realistic as a working solution to the problem albeit still unlikely to happen. Personally I don't think my neighbours are to blame, but if your neighbours are such assholes that they not only litter but are going to attack you for reporting it I don't see anything else that's going to change their mind other than being fined for it, something far more likely to happen if reporting it was encouraged. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 21st Sep 2022 7:43pm)
  • Perfect timing. I just bought a Yard Broom Head and handle at screwfix. Sadly, the handles came in packs of 5, need an extra broom handle? lol by ROSS_MITCHELL (Wed 21st Sep 2022 9:47pm)
  • Compulsory purchase orders seem completely broken, seems every day you walk past another wreaked building due for a compulsory purchase order and it never comes, then you have the scandal of the Egyptian halls building where for some reason the asshole who owns it is allowed to keep owning it. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Fri 23rd Sep 2022 2:55pm)
  • If only people did get fined. Seems that everyone drops litter with full knowledge that they will never get fined with how things are now; we need these fines to be a very real risk people face by littering otherwise they will just keep littering content they will never face any repercussions. by ROSS_MITCHELL (Sat 24th Sep 2022 10:29am)
