  • Kelvin does indeed still run the gigs, not sure about pay to play other than the cost of hiring the venue but it wouldn't surprise me lol by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 12:55pm)
  • Aye, Esteban is a lovely guy, no doubt, just doesn't have very good production value on his videos. My band played M2TM last year and thankfully they wasn't an issue for us at any point but the gigs were very poorly organised for the most part, plus barely any people showed up to them until the semi final iirc, was a bit of a shambles to say the least. The winners were also very lacking in any sort of USP or stage presence, they're a decent enough band and they're good guys from what I've seen, but there were far better bands that got knocked out far earlier and that seems to ring true for most years sadly by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:02pm)
  • There definitely doesn't seem to be a lot of experimentation going on with too many bands in the scene, sadly. I understand that for a lot of people who find themselves playing Ivory's of a weekend, they're doing it as a hobby and just want the thrill of being on stage, which is fair enough, but then you really cant complain when nobody's willing to show up to watch 4 mediocre sets with nothing interesting at all being brought to the table by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:09pm)
  • Honestly I'd say there's an overabundance of old school heavy metal/hard rock sort of bands on the scene just now; Nocturne Wulf, Darkness Divine, Victorious, etc. I think the one thing that's holding a lot of bands back is a lack of dedicated metal drummers. I've noticed an lot of bands with death growls and insane riffage but which totally lack any impact cos the drummer can barely play anything more than a 4/4 rock beat, it's a real shame but it just means that actual good drummers really shine through by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:06pm)
  • I think that's what the vape shop next door is called now by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:13pm)
  • Oh fuck aye, Ivory's was also temporarily without an alcohol license while M2TM was running in 2019, and at one point we had to swap venues from ivory's to 13th note after already arriving at ivory's, somebody had to carry the drums round and everything by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:12pm)
  • That's fucking hilarious by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:10pm)

  • Last Alibi were on the tip of my tongue while writing that comment hahaha, aye they're pretty good too. Those kinds of bands seem to have found their niche quite successfully by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:18pm)
  • Apologies ahahaha by Throw_RA_9001 (Mon 1st Jun 2020 1:30pm)
  • Honestly, in my experience, it's fairly easy to get gigs so long as you have an active social media presence. Most of the gigs my band played back at the start were pretty much purely down to us messaging local promoters and seeing if they needed local support for local shows. Don't expect to support Municipal Waste or Testament in your first year, or even second or third or even fourth of playing together. It's gonna be a lot of small crowds and even smaller stages, but thankfully, from what I've seen, barring M2TM, the scene is essentially a meritocracy, so if you guys slap, you will end up with a small following without too much effort. After that, booking gigs gets a lot easier, as you can sell a few tickets, and once you're more confident in your ability to draw a crowd, you can start booking your own by hiring out venues and arranging for other bands to play with you. It's stuff that you learn over time, but don't feel too intimidated to even start in the first place. You'll get there if you just have a bit of patience. by Throw_RA_9001 (Thu 4th Jun 2020 4:31pm)
  • I concur, but it seems like a lot of people are determined to go, hence why I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is and do my best to protect the people and businesses of our already faltering city. by Throw_RA_9001 (Thu 4th Jun 2020 4:46pm)
  • Was heading to my mate's house in the Gorbals the weekend lockdown started - before it had been officially announced obviously - and at the time there were a lot of rumours about the army being rolled out to enforce it and shit. Needless to say the atmosphere in town was very odd indeed, and as I was passing by the McDonald's at the Trongate end of Argyle street, there was a Deliveroo guy coming out with his bike, and a junkie looking dude coming the other way straight up walked right into the dude's bike and put his hands on it as if he was trying to make off with it - in broad daylight with loads of witnesses nearby - but I think he was literally too weak, and couldn't get the owner to let go. The owner of the bike sort of looked at me incredulously and then said something to the guy and I slowed down and got ready to intervene if necessary, but the junkie just gave up and started speedwalking away, rambling incoherently. Not very exciting, I know, but they definitely seem to be getting bolder of late for some reason. P.S. OP we totally know each other, but I'll see if you can guess before I give it away lol.
