  • Absolutely shocking how many people are saying it's a hill. Incline != Hill. Hills have inclines but an incline is not in and of itself a hill. [To be a hill, there must be a clear distinction from the surrounding terrain.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill) If any bit of land that wasn't totally flat is a hill, then everything would be a hill. Madness. by dessiatin (Fri 25th Jan 2019 11:39am)
  • One thing's certain, the British public and it's politicians are [always totally rational when it comes to this subject.](https://youtu.be/P_4BZnWnXzI) by dessiatin (Fri 8th Feb 2019 10:51am)
  • Just as, if not more, important than segregated lanes is proper enforcement with regards to the rest of the rules of the road. Uni Ave. is notoriously bad for tour buses stopping on those double yellow lines there and significantly narrowing the road. Gotta squeeze those tourists in somehow though, god forbid the uni loses out on those souvenir shop sales. by dessiatin (Mon 11th Feb 2019 11:32am)
  • Yes the winter of discontent was definitely entirely because of Clause IV and nothing at all to do with the stagflation caused by the collapse of the Bretton-Woods system and the oil shocks. by dessiatin (Sat 16th Feb 2019 1:54pm)
  • If there's one thing I know from my years in the music business it's that the highest priority is given to keeping the staff room tea kettle safe, and as a result there's CCTV kept on it at all times. by dessiatin (Fri 22nd Feb 2019 6:20pm)

  • It's called the "Silent Season", normally lasts 3-4 weeks. Whisky production is 24/7 for most of the year so there has to be some time demarcated for serious maintenance and overhauls. by dessiatin (Tue 10th Dec 2019 9:04pm)
  • Most people sell on gumtree or FB groups. Cash Converters in town on Renfield St will buy them but I doubt you'll get the best price. by dessiatin (Tue 4th Feb 2020 12:37pm)
  • I'd think the Windrush scandal and the methodology of the hostile environment are pretty indicative or the systemic racism in Britain. If a man who made his name writing articles [like this](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/personal-view/3571742/If-Blairs-so-good-at-running-the-Congo-let-him-stay-there.html) can end up as Prime Minister, then what does that say about British society as a fertile ground for racism? by dessiatin (Mon 8th Jun 2020 3:33pm)

  • > seems like a lot of folk While the culture you're talking about certainly exists, it's always worth remembering there's an inherent confirmation bias here. If a subculture is based around posturing and conspicuous consumption, then by that very nature they're going to be a lot more prominent and visible than other subsets of a culture - there are a lot more people out there who aren't trying to be flashy cunts, but since they're not going out of their way to be seen it feels like all we've got left is spiceboys. by dessiatin (Sun 30th Aug 2020 10:56am)

  • Yeah in the grand scheme of things it's not that bad really. I've been here for four years and most of my friends are in the area too and no one I know has ever had any serious bother. But I think it might be a bit much for someone just moving to the city, maybe best to start off with a tutorial area like the west end rather than jumping straight in to Allison street PVP combat arena. Don't even bother locking a bike anywhere. It'll get pinched even if you're still riding it round here... by dessiatin (Thu 17th Sep 2020 10:36pm)
  • https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amp-Round-Pin-Plug-White/dp/B007Q1LGUY Buy some plugs and wire them up to your lamps! It's great to be able to just turn all the lamps on from the light switch at the door, we never turn the big light on in our flat. by dessiatin (Sat 19th Sep 2020 11:05am)
  • The boy with the saxophone underneath the awning at the sauchiehall street tescos is the best by far. The two older guys who do drums and guitar jazz outside tgi fridays are alright too. But aye the identikit acoustic guitar lads get a bit tiresome. • Just got some bits processed at Gulabi and I was pretty pleased with the results, easy process to drop the film in their shop and the scans were sent over via Dropbox within a few days. They don't do prints I think, just digital and the negatives. You might have a more discerning eye for development than I do but the finished product looked nice to me. They've got a pretty decent selection of film in a fridge in there too, but I didn't look at any of the prices, sorry. by dessiatin (Tue 6th Oct 2020 4:31pm)

  • Thought this might be of use, took me longer than it should've to find this. Shows where the exact boundaries are for all the affected central belt regions. Official guidance on travelling to and from Level 3 areas: > no non-essential travel into or out of the level 3 area >exemptions for essential travel for work, education, shopping health etc; outdoor exercise; weddings and funerals; shared parenting, and transit through restricted areas Would be nice to have some clarity on what comes under "outdoor exercise", like other people on this subreddit I'm ganting to get out of the city, but I'm not sure if somewhere like Mugdock is out of bounds... by dessiatin (Sun 1st Nov 2020 12:19pm)
  • I honestly have no idea on how strict the tier 3 to tier 3 travelling is supposed to be. Is someone who technically lives in Rutherglen breaking the rules by going to the big Toryglen Asda? What if they have to get public transport to get to the Tesco that's technically within their area? Personally I think I'm going to be basing my decisions on how many people I'm likely to come into contact with, rather than where the lines are on the map. Whether that's legal or not I genuinely don't know. by dessiatin (Sun 1st Nov 2020 1:28pm)
  • Map from 1795 that specifically refers to the area as Strathbungo - https://maps.nls.uk/counties/rec/645 by dessiatin (Mon 2nd Nov 2020 9:14pm)
  • I've been living here for about 4 years now. The area is safe inasmuch as I've never known anyone to be mugged or assaulted, and I've never felt unsafe walking around at all times at night. Think I've maybe seen one fight on my street in the whole time, which is considerably less than what I saw when I lived in the west end. No trouble with neighbours, aside from a couple of flats being used as air bnbs that have the odd late night party in them. If you look closely you'll see a lot of drug baggies and the occasional needle laying on the street, but again no more than are in other parts of town if you know what to look for. In terms of personal safety the biggest issue you're likely to face is the feral birds that congregate by the shell garage. The biggest real issue is burglaries and theft. Cars get broken into, bikes stolen from closes, and doors get tried with some regularity. I'd say it's a wee bit worse for that here than in the West end, but honestly it happens everywhere in this town. I've never lived anywhere where there hasn't been someone in the close that's been robbed. The area between the city and Eglinton toll used to be a major population centre that was flattened in the mid twentieth century, and the population was spread out to housing developments and tower blocks throughout town. If you know what to look for you can still see some ghosts of what the area used to be. The O2 academy used to be a major cinema, the flats directly to the east of the shell garage were one of the biggest dancehalls in the city. If you walk down to Strathbungo, there's a (very low resolution) photo of the star bar on the side of one of the pubs, it gives a bit of an idea of what it used to look like. by dessiatin (Mon 2nd Nov 2020 9:28pm)

  • ER isn't the place for addiction treatment true, but it seems there's a lot of evidence linking homelessness to things like head trauma - if people aren't getting treated for their physically injuries in the ER then that can have a downstream effect on the rest of their lives. Punitive thinking has got to go. by dessiatin (Tue 15th Dec 2020 10:39pm)
  • Didn't mean to imply it's A&E staff who are being overly punitive, sorry, meant it more in the general sense. by dessiatin (Wed 16th Dec 2020 11:00pm)
  • No one's going about saying they tolerate anything and everything, no one ever has lol. They'll get the same treatment Lord Haw Haw got when he got caught round here in the 30s. No tolerance for fascism, no tolerance for racism. Nae pasaran. by dessiatin (Sat 8th May 2021 9:09pm)

  • Dunno about the ones at the plaza but I'm in the ones the other side of the road and I wouldn't buy one of them myself. They're not awful, but they're definitely cheaply made new builds. The underground parking is constantly flooded with all the pipes leaking, we've had leaks coming in from the flat above, and with the flat roof it's only a matter of time before theres more serious problems from the rain. That being said, it might be worth a punt for a first step on the ladder? They're actually not that bad to live for 99% of the time, as has been said it's a bit of a no man's land but you're only five minutes down to trendy Viccy road. Neighbours in our bit are all very nice and normal. Train station right near and plenty of busses. Might get your car broken into or your bike pinched but there's not many places in this city where that doesn't happen. My concerns would just be if you'll be able to sell it again in 5+ years time if the buildings start falling apart? by dessiatin (Fri 19th Nov 2021 8:38am)
  • Totally agree, if you're paying extra then you're allowed to be snobby. I went for Dune the other week and I'd rather have just gotten a regular showing than paying more for a manky screen. by dessiatin (Wed 24th Nov 2021 6:23pm)

  • For what it's worth I don't think that's *strictly* true. The guys been putting this symbol up as graffiti for about twenty years now - it's only within the past couple of years that he's jumped into the anti-trans nastiness and attached that meaning to his symbol. The guy's clearly a space cadet, pretty tragic to be a grown man cutting about at night slapping ugly graffiti up and thinking it makes you a righteous feminist. by dessiatin (Wed 12th Jan 2022 10:06pm)
