  • Two bad winters where the water seeps into cracks and expands when frozen to mess up the tarmac. It's quite wet here you may have noticed. Glasgow and Edinburgh councils both fix potholes within 81-82% of their target: https://www.cyclinguk.org/sites/default/files/document/2021/02/pothole_watch_scotland.pdf The average across the UK as a whole is 81%. So bang average. by joejag (Tue 18th Jan 2022 8:40pm)
  • That's the Campsies. If you look to the right of the cranes you can see the bit you drive up to the Car park In The Sky where you can go up to Cort-ma Law. by joejag (Sat 5th Feb 2022 1:14pm)
  • The schedule for Wednesday is wind at 80mph, -12C wind chill with 3cm of snow falling every hour. I'm not sure they'd survive even with an axe and crampons. https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Ben-Lomond/forecasts/974 by joejag (Mon 21st Feb 2022 6:06pm)
  • I'd try GumTree first. If you cannot get rid of it, the council bulk uplift is £35 for a sofa. by joejag (Fri 4th Mar 2022 8:38pm)
  • Not been to that one, but it is common for high rises to have a floor dedicated to clothes drying at the top. by joejag (Thu 17th Mar 2022 9:20pm)
  • WEST on Glasgow Green is great on a sunny day. Shilling in the city centre has a great tap range including their own. by joejag (Sun 27th Mar 2022 9:49pm)
  • +1 for Grain and Grind, huge selection of great beans. Plus that recommendation is my favourite from their selection too. by joejag (Tue 29th Mar 2022 7:17pm)
  • Mural trail is probably the best. Here is one route for it: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/glasgow-murals.shtml The Hip Hop Marionettes are gone though. James Klinge has done a great job on Midland Street with a tribute to The Arches. So add that in to make up for the Marionettes by joejag (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 8:43pm)
  • Glasgow's Clyde Bridges is one of the better walks. It's from the Science Centre to Rutherglen, taking in a fair bit of Glasgow history on the way: https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=39733&p=0 by joejag (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 8:45pm)
  • Intu Braehead is quite fun, maybe you wouldn't call it a shopping centre. Silverburn is entirely tolerable, I don't seem to get lost in there like I do other ones. by joejag (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 8:57pm)
  • Here's a site dedicated to telling you a bit more about each stop. I'm glad to see this is up to date as there's been four added since I last looked: https://www.citycentremuraltrail.co.uk/murals/murallist by joejag (Sun 3rd Apr 2022 9:02pm)
  • Lucky for you that 5G is now enabled in Glasgow. Get yourself a 5G router instead, EE have unlimited data right now on their plan: https://shop.ee.co.uk/broadband/5g-home-broadband 10 years from now most folks will be connecting this way. by joejag (Thu 7th Apr 2022 10:35pm)
  • To be honest, Glasgow isn't a city known for its skyline, it's more a marvel to see up close in the city centre when you remember to look up. All you can pick out from afar is that pink "People Make Glasgow" building near George Square. I'd agree with others that Queen's Park at the flagpole gives a great and accessible viewpoint over the city. I've seen Glasgow from the Cathkin Braes, Kilpatrick Hills and Campsies, you can't make that much out and there is usually a haze over the city to stop you from doing so. Go to Queen's Park then get some food on Victoria Road. It'll be magic. by joejag (Thu 28th Apr 2022 8:38pm)
  • Nice one. As I said, the further away the less you can reliably make out. Cathkin Braes would be my second choice. by joejag (Thu 28th Apr 2022 8:45pm)
  • The best part of living in Glasgow is that the nearest park is one of the best parks in Glasgow. End of. by joejag (Sat 30th Apr 2022 10:22pm)
  • I think in Westminster and Holyrood elections the Royal Mail is obliged to offer one free communication to every candidate. I suspect that isn't the case for Council elections, so there are fewer leaflets arriving. The ones you are getting are paid for or dropped by volunteers. by joejag (Wed 4th May 2022 7:48pm)
  • I mean, the salary for a councillor until this year was £18.6k for an average of 38 hours of work a week. That's well below the average wage, so it's quite normal for them to have second jobs. Working in an MP or MSPs office in the same constituency makes sense as they are often covering the same case work. by joejag (Fri 6th May 2022 10:50pm)
  • You are most welcome, this event is for everyone in and looking to get into our tech scene. My name is Joe, so please say 'hi' if you are there on the day and would like to meet others. by joejag (Wed 15th Jun 2022 9:25pm)
  • We've reached the capacity for the venue. I've added a waitlist to see how much more demand there is so we can plan for a bigger venue if needed. Plus if a ticket becomes free, folks can claim it. by joejag (Thu 16th Jun 2022 12:34pm)
  • 99% sure if you join the waitlist you'll get a notification for the August event when we create it. by joejag (Thu 16th Jun 2022 8:45pm)
  • I have a daily walk around a park (without a dog) and run into this all the time. In the last two years, I've been bitten three times, and the owners responses were: * "Sorry!" (they ran away - my finger was bitten from behind me) * "Oh, I'm just taking it for a walk, it's not my dog" (then they jogged away - bitten on my heel) * The dog was about 300 meters away from their owner when it bit my arm. I said "Control your dog or restrain your dog", the reply? "It's not fair on the dog to be on a lead as they get no exercise". The dog looked like it would attack me if I argued with them so I jogged away I can't imagine owning a dog and taking it walks as it's enough stress when it is just me. by joejag (Tue 21st Jun 2022 10:25pm)
  • Right between Oban and Loch Lomond is the tourist hotspot of Tyndrum. The Green Welly there does a great Cullen Skink. by joejag (Sat 24th Sep 2022 12:54am)
  • 2019: About seven kids came around 2022: 37 kids came around. Loads of families moved near us after lockdown I suppose. Probably all escaping where OP lives. by joejag (Tue 1st Nov 2022 11:59pm)
  • Hearing bad experiences like this makes me want to learn more and see if we have data to indicate rates we can use to see trends. There's a 2021 government publication on "Characteristics of police recorded hate crime in Scotland" which uses police data to show relative rates. One of the things that jumped out to me was that hate crimes were committed by strangers only 19% of the time, and 57% of the time it is by an acquaintance. The data show Edinburgh and Glasgow to have the same incidence rate of hate crimes with racial hate crimes by far the most recorded. Sexual orientation hate crime have shown the biggest rise over the last decade. The incidents of hate crime have been pretty constant since the current record system was introduced in 2013. So we can't pretend things are getting better over time. Oddly enough, to me, Falkirk shows the next highest rate of hate crimes after the two big cities: https://www.gov.scot/publications/study-characteristics-police-recorded-hate-crime-scotland/pages/6/ This obviously only includes crimes that were reported to the police, it's depressing reading. But you can learn more by reading over the publication. The bits on disability hate crime were new to me. If you want to see UK trends, which calculate by individuals involved rather than crimes, you can see them at https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-8537/CBP-8537.pdf We can all do better to reduce our own ignorance and that of our family/friends/co-workers. by joejag (Tue 29th Nov 2022 9:18pm)
  • Always a low move to reduce wages. You'd expect them to raise prices instead. Bit confused about the £5.5m number; the 2021 accounts for Itison made £534k profit from £16m revenue in the 2021 accounts, taking no dividends. • I used to go to the Bon Accord every Friday for a few years. During Hurricane Bawbag, I took refuge in the Bon Accord. It was only Paul, myself and a friend, so we did a whisky tasting while responsibly seeing the storm pass so we could go home. He was proud that he only had to call the police into his pub once in the entire time he ran the Bon Accord. He'd often have troublesome punters, but he'd always have a trick to get them to leave of their own, well, accord. One technique I'd see him use a lot was to ask a person to drink their pint at the bar instead of a table. The punter would soon realise they can't stand straight and go home. A fabulous guy who recruited an excellent staff too. Sad times. by joejag (Thu 20th Jul 2023 1:05am)
  • There's a list of the "World's best cities" where Glasgow gets into the top 100. In particular, Glasgow scored well for: * The arts, culture, entertainment and culinary scene in a city, including the sub-categories of Shopping, Culture, Restaurants, and Nightlife. * The immigration rate and diversity of a city, including the sub-categories of Foreign Born and Educational Attainment. The report highlights that Glasgow is the sixth-most-educated city on the planet and was designated the UK’s first UNESCO City of Music in 2008. https://www.worldsbestcities.com/rankings/worlds-best-cities/ by joejag (Sun 30th Jul 2023 12:27pm)
