  • Well I did live in Portobello, which was nice, for the beach. Although if there was any slightly hot weather it was just heaving with people. maybe that is true of any nice beach. But living in the city generally, I had the feeling that outwith the festival month, there wasn't much to do. Mainstream and expensive cultural events. whereas after only a very short time in Glasgow I feel there is a very creative cultural community. Also people here are super friendly, even in so called 'sketchy' neighbourhoods. Edinburgh more conservative socially. Not unfriendly, it is a progressive city, but more restrained. by makkmed (Fri 15th Jul 2022 6:29pm)

  • I would say that if you are with Scottish Power don't do it. They are always making errors, charging you for things they shouldn't, sending threats about bills you've already paid. I think half the company doesn't know what the other half is doing. So in short i wouldn't give them access to your bank account. And if things do go wrong, they are a nightmare to contact. Other companies are probably fine though. by makkmed (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 1:42pm)
  • 20% of the tickets are sold at the door on the day. It is almost guaranteed that you can just turn up and be able to get a ticket for later the same day. Sometimes just have to wait an hour or two. And despite what the cynics are saying..it is a brilliant show. by makkmed (Mon 10th Jul 2023 6:11pm)

  • Pink Peacock has closed down. I wonder who will take over that space now. As great as Govanhill is, it could really do with a small kind of venue for all sorts of gigs and performances. by makkmed (Wed 19th Jul 2023 8:10pm)

  • Who would have thought that a record shop would have such fantastic food options. Service is a bit slow though sometimes. But even that worked out for me because I had two hours to kill in between buying my Banksy ticket and actually getting to see the exhibition. (Mono is ten minutes from the art gallery). by makkmed (Thu 27th Jul 2023 7:09pm)
  • I was a very active member of the squatting scene in Amsterdam for many years. One hard fought right we won was a change in the law that said that if a building was standing empty for more than a year without any plans, then it could be legally squatted, and in fact the polis would protect and uphold the rights of the squatters against the owners if they tries to kick out squatters illegally. In the past some land owners held on to huge amounts of properties in the city centre for years while it fell apart and they could demolish it to build luxury flats or while the value of the land itself just increased year by year. Under the new laws, they had to have concrete plans and take on a whole legal process to evict squatters. by makkmed (Thu 3rd Aug 2023 5:56pm)
  • Well it meant that people could squat more places with a certain amount of confidence and a feeling of security. The whole subculture there was very different than in the UK and many members of the general public were sympathetic towards squatters. The squatting movement was very organised and structured and there were lots of groups who would help people to squat, to do due diligence on the owners and be there for the actual squatting and giving all sorts of physical support. I left there ten years ago and I get the impression that, like many parts of Europe, Amsterdam has moved to the right. I think big creative squatted projects are a thing of the past. by makkmed (Fri 4th Aug 2023 12:39pm)

  • By far the vast majority of Israelis I spoke to in Tel Aviv hated Palestinians. There was a small group of local jewish people who had a Palestine support group going on. They were great people, but it was really just a handful. by makkmed (Fri 25th Aug 2023 6:04pm)

  • There is a cool place called Bike for Good on Langside Lane, just on your right when you walk down Viccy road from queens park. I think it would be the ideal place for you to donate your things. Don't know what neighbourhood you are in. by makkmed (Mon 25th Sep 2023 2:33pm)
  • It's true that it's filthy and there are a lot of junkies but it's also a great neighbourhood to live in. Super friendly, and interesting too. by makkmed (Wed 27th Sep 2023 1:32pm)
  • Don't understand what you're trying to say. I'm deluded? Or you are? Govanhill is cheap. I love it here. I couldn't even afford to live in places like Shawlands. I agreed with you, there are junkies and it is dirty. But I like the diversity and the feeling socially on the street. by makkmed (Thu 28th Sep 2023 2:54pm)

  • I go to an Iraqi guy on Govanhill street just off cathcart road. He is really sound and I think the other mechanics around that block are all pretty good, honest and reasonably cheap. by makkmed (Mon 2nd Oct 2023 5:47pm)

  • I moved from Edimnburgh to Glasgow about 15 months ago. After ten years in Edinburgh. I think it was Limmy who said 'Edinburgh is a place to visit but Glasgow is a place to live'. I moved to Govanhill. People warned me against it saying it was violent and stuff like that. But I really like it. There are pros and cons. it is a fantastically friendly, social neighbourhood. It is probably the cheapest neighbourhood to rent in which you still feel close enough to the rest of the city. There is great diversity here different nationalities and different cultural groups. It is dirty, one of the dirtiest in Glasgow I would imagine. I had to move out of Edinburgh because the rents just became outrageous, due to tourists, air bnb, and students. I did like Edinburgh and it is physically beautiful, but less friendly. Much more going on in Glasgow, and it's much bigger of course. by makkmed (Thu 19th Oct 2023 1:52pm)
  • Nice to see that Alex Harvey on that Clutha mural Don't recognise any of the others except Frank Zappa (what is he doing there?) I saw Alex Harvey Band play quite a few times when they were at their peak. (Midnight Moses, Faith Healer etc). Yes they were sensational. What a stage presence. I saw him staring down a whole gang of Hells Angels at the front of the stage at one gig. At knebworth festival SAHB got there early and commandeered the luxury trailer meant for headliners The Doobie brothers. The Doobies complained about it and Alex said to them We'll fight you for it. Choose your weapons. The doobie brothers ended up in a different trailer. by makkmed (Sat 28th Oct 2023 7:52pm)

  • Just want to say congratulations. It took me six months of viewings to get a flat in Govanhill, often competing against 50 or more other hopefuls. Hope your landlord is alright, there are a couple you wouldn't want to be with. The BeesKnees cafe just off Victoria Road is under new management, two young guys running it with a lot of ideas. You've got a great artisan ice cream parlour that's open all year round, and a newly refurbished second hand bookshop just along from it. Just round the corner on pollokshaw road you've got Hidden gardens and also Super Asia, a brilliant exotic supermarket And in the summer the Govanhill festival. by makkmed (Wed 15th Nov 2023 5:24pm)
  • I used to do tarot readings. I had my own deck published with a book. However I don't do tarot anymore. I have another deck which i designed myself. I can do you a reading if you are interested. I will send you a link to a page which shows the cards, so you can see if you feel you resonate with them or not. I am really busy this week but could probably fit it in over the next two or three weeks.
