  • With heat reaching 111° today (43.8 c) I am looking forward to the weather in Glasgow lol He will be starting his postgraduate degree at the University of Glasgow and then Ill hopefully start mine in a year, if everything lines up that is. Im not too familiar with the city so when it comes to specific areas I have no clue what to look for. Commuting distances don't matter to us either as it typically takes us 20 to 30 minutes to drive anywhere in the city we are now. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 9:29pm)
  • Oh yeah! I just forgot to say we won't be driving, we just don't mind a longer commute by subway, train or bus. Thank you! by mnspencer0407 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 10:03pm)
  • Nearest train station to the university? by mnspencer0407 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 10:19pm)
  • The way it works in California is you have your rent, gas/electricity, utilities (sewage, water, and trash.) Do you have water bills like we have our utilities? Otherwise everything is so much cheaper and Im getting more and more excited about everything by the day. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 10:18pm)
  • Oh sweet! Thank you! I dont know why I didn't think about Facebook. Its been a dream of ours to move to Scotland and now Im getting more excited by mnspencer0407 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 10:20pm)
  • I swear everywhere outside of the valley in California has plenty of water. But that makes sense. Both of us will be on student visas so maybe that'll make us exempt? But I also won't have a problem with paying it. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 10:26pm)
  • Oohh, you'll have to forgive me. Im trying to get used to the difference in terms. Which, I dont have a train or subway in my city, just busses. So its a whole new thing for me lol I've looked at route maps for both subway and train in Glasgow and saw different transfer stations. Was what I saw right? Like taking the train then switching to subway to get places if need be? by mnspencer0407 (Mon 17th Aug 2020 12:50am)
  • Oh hello! I was just looking at hotels to stay at for a few weeks. My husband and I thought that would be in our best interest as well so that we can see the properties in person while exploring the city. (The Fraser Hotel looks pretty comfy tbh lol) I'm a little daunted getting an unfurnished apartment, but I guess it could be cheaper right? Just have to budget accordingly to buy the furniture....... I was afraid of that.... were a little spoiled being in California so well just have to have a big meal before we leave 😭 im pretty sure my husband is more heartbroken about that than I am lol by mnspencer0407 (Mon 17th Aug 2020 3:03pm)
  • I've been planning to get us temporary accommodations until we find a flat. Probably two months then if it's that hard. The visa allows us to be in the country up to a month before classes start... do you happen to know if we can be in the country before that on like a visitors visa? I don't know if you'd know, but it's another idea I've toyed with. by mnspencer0407 (Fri 26th Feb 2021 9:56pm)
  • Slightly different question from before. Didn't think there was a problem with asking again by mnspencer0407 (Fri 26th Feb 2021 11:23pm)
  • Then the mods can do something about it. I'm not looking for where to live. I'm looking for advice on how to find. Let people be excited when they're excited. If you're irritated then ignore the post or report to mods. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 27th Feb 2021 1:36am)
  • That's really solid advice, thank you! by mnspencer0407 (Sat 27th Feb 2021 12:21am)
  • Bro with where we are at in California, Glasgow is a dream! Do you know how expensive it is on the beach? Lol and my area is super conservative.... like scary conservative. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 27th Feb 2021 12:19am)
  • Why do you care? by mnspencer0407 (Sat 27th Feb 2021 12:18am)
  • You don't have lease terms? Like you don't have to live in a place for 6 or 12 months? by mnspencer0407 (Sat 27th Feb 2021 3:46pm)
  • As an American moving soon, it has been almost impossible to get an apartment. They either won't let to me because I can't see it in person or I need a guarantor and they won't accept the university. (UoG has a rent guarantor scheme.) Finally something stuck and it just happened to be in the West End. I was debating on living out Simshill(?) at one point. by mnspencer0407 (Tue 3rd Aug 2021 3:40am)
  • ..........what's a bumfer.... you gata explain it to me like I'm five by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 11:54am)
  • Do you think I need to turn the left nob? Maybe there's zero water flowing through it at all because with the thermostat all the way up and the right nob all the way up for about 10 minutes didn't do anything. by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 11:55am)
  • Thank you everyone for the help. I have to go to the post office first and then I will attempt all of your suggestions. The boiler has what I think is a symbol for the radiator, so I'll check that out when I get home. Worst case scenario I will contact the letting agency and see if they can just show me how to work it. by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 12:34pm)
  • Oh! Of course! Well that was easy to figure out. My california bum was quite cold and I needed to figure that out first. by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 12:32pm)
  • This is a heat wave? You're kidding me by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 8:43pm)
  • Exactly. This is the perfect weather for me so I don't plan on using them anytime soon. That being said, I'd rather not be freezing my butt off trying to figure them out lol by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 8:43pm)
  • There's a symbol for the radiator on the boiler but it's already on. I'm going to have maintenance look at it when they come to fix other things. by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 8:41pm)
  • I said it to get laughs 😏 you see it every day of your life whereas I use an air conditioner every day of my life back in the states by mnspencer0407 (Mon 16th Aug 2021 8:40pm)
  • Seeing Inverness and Edinburgh are first on my list. Especially Inverness before winter hits. It may be surprising but we don't have winter gear lol I've never needed it! by mnspencer0407 (Tue 17th Aug 2021 11:19am)
  • History 😁😁😁 we both are in the field of history and california has very few things historical. Plus, believe it or not, we hate the heat. We lived in an area where it would get to 40-45° in the summer and zero rain throughout the year. by mnspencer0407 (Tue 17th Aug 2021 3:58pm)
  • Oh trust me, I don't need it any time soon. I would just rather know that it's working rather than need it and not have it, you know? by mnspencer0407 (Wed 18th Aug 2021 2:12pm)
  • There's something wrong with the thermostat because there's no clicking when I turn it. I've replaced thermostats before so I just need a screwdriver lol if that fails I'm contacting our property management. I almost turned it on last night!! by mnspencer0407 (Thu 19th Aug 2021 6:15am)
  • My husband and I just did a London to Glasgow train ride with Avanti. We had 5 pieces of 28x18x11 inch luggage and two carry ons. They all had four wheels so pushing them around wasn't terrible but it was awkward. Avanti has huge luggage racks in first class so I would highly suggest that. Between stations, the airport, and hotel, we used taxis and heavily tipped our driver. We never want to look at luggage again in our lifetime but it worked lol by mnspencer0407 (Sun 29th Aug 2021 4:42pm)
  • With this economy? Psh (I don't know I'm just saying stuff to say it lol) by mnspencer0407 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 12:20pm)
  • It's a joke. by mnspencer0407 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 12:34pm)
  • I'm just remembering a line from the movie The Lighthouse. It's frightfully bad luck to kill a seagull by mnspencer0407 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 12:39pm)
  • If I have a bird flying at my face I would be fearing for my life. by mnspencer0407 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 1:32pm)
  • What the actual fuck are these seagulls made of??? by mnspencer0407 (Tue 7th Sep 2021 1:31pm)
  • My husband and I hopped onto a bus at Queen Margaret drive one day and he was driving like a bat out of hell. Cutting people off, slamming on his breaks and the gas. Some women complained to the driver asking him if he was in a hurry. We ended up getting off asap because of the recklessness. by mnspencer0407 (Mon 4th Oct 2021 6:09pm)
  • I wasn't sure if anyone saw this website. There was a commercial on the TV about COP26. I hope this helps people. https://www.getreadyglasgow.com/ by mnspencer0407 (Tue 12th Oct 2021 8:44am)
  • From Govan Road across the Clyde to Maryhill. Only took about thirty minutes. by mnspencer0407 (Thu 28th Oct 2021 4:08pm)
  • I was stunned at how inexpensive it is to live here vs where I'm from. We don't have public transportation even though my home city is the same size as Glasgow. We don't have trashcan everywhere for litter and we don't have a two bed flat you can get for £800 a month. I understand the frustrations of people who are from this city, though, and services are probably better in other cities, but I'm super happy to live here. Even if first bus isn't totally reliable. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 7th Nov 2021 8:44am)
  • Thank you! by mnspencer0407 (Sat 11th Dec 2021 12:18pm)
  • We're in a less than desirable post code?? I'm in G20 and I love it. Still close to the West End, transportation everywhere and it's quiet. by mnspencer0407 (Fri 11th Feb 2022 8:47pm)
  • I think its the reputation of what Maryhill used to be. I'm not native to the area but I've heard stories of how rough the area used to be until a councilwoman cleaned it up. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 12th Feb 2022 8:13am)
  • Right? I like the look of Hyndland and Finnieston has a bunch of bars, but I enjoy the quiet away from all the students. Just the old lady inside of me that likes her peace by mnspencer0407 (Sat 12th Feb 2022 8:12am)
  • Oh! Okay, that was my bad. But that's good to know for the future. We're in no place to buy a home right now but ever since moving in this area we don't want to leave. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 12th Feb 2022 8:11am)
  • I miss sewing and crafting and I hate that I have to go to Hobby Craft to get my supplies. 1) it's difficult to get without a car and 2) it has a terrible selection. Having a reliable fabric store where I can get what I need would be amazing. I miss Joann Fabric and Crafts back in the states. I would also love to hear your ideas of where you'd source the fabric locally. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 12th Feb 2022 9:12am)
  • Old Salty's on Byers road does a fantastic breakfast Edit for spelling. Stupid auto correct. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 13th Mar 2022 7:06pm)
  • Super boring but I always get fish and chips from Simeones. Every once in a while I'll get a haggis fritter if I'm feeling fancy. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 28th May 2022 12:07pm)
  • I'm also fairly new to Glasgow and scotland and went to my first ceilidh about a month ago at Avant Guarde. Sloans also does one every Friday but Avant Guarde goes through the steps before each dance and it's soooooo much fun! I also wouldn't worry about going alone either. Someone is always looking for a partner. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 28th May 2022 7:35pm)
  • Lolol I feel like I could trust the staff in general there they seem really cool. I think I'm over thinking this. Maybe. I don't know by mnspencer0407 (Sat 28th May 2022 7:49pm)
  • Haven't gone yet and I had a friend to go with me but they canceled 😭😭😭 right as I got all dressed and ready to go. I might brave it on my own. I've never gone out alone before by mnspencer0407 (Sat 28th May 2022 10:52pm)
  • Truueeee!! And at least I can say I tried it! by mnspencer0407 (Sat 28th May 2022 11:03pm)
  • Thank you for the tips! I didn't think about arranging my ride home before hand. I'm also super strict with myself about not leaving my drink alone too. Too many horror stories. Thankfully I live with someone so they'll be expecting me home before it's too late by mnspencer0407 (Sat 28th May 2022 11:02pm)
  • There's also been a tour group that comes through every two weeks or something. I work at the hotel they stay at and they descend down into the bar like a swarm. Also American here for school. It's fun watching my coworkers face when I say I hate Americans. by mnspencer0407 (Fri 10th Jun 2022 11:18am)
  • Shoot, I work when they meet but that's awesome! If my schedule allows it I'll check them out. Thank you! by mnspencer0407 (Fri 10th Jun 2022 1:17pm)
  • I bring in about £1000 and live with my partner who is in uni. His student loans (international students) pay for our rent and my paycheck pays for everything else. We've been having to ask parents for help by mid month just so we can eat. I got promoted at work though so that should help a wee bit at least..... my mental health is definitely struggling. I feel like I'm working so hard with zero payoff. by mnspencer0407 (Fri 19th Aug 2022 1:23am)
  • Came on here to say this by mnspencer0407 (Tue 30th Aug 2022 2:51am)
  • Kelvingrove art gallery and museum has some super cute ones. Same with the University of Glasgow gift shop just outside the Hunterian. At least they were there a few months ago by mnspencer0407 (Tue 4th Oct 2022 8:27pm)
  • Yeah I'm gona have to tell them I'm not available until later in the day. Thanks! by mnspencer0407 (Sat 29th Oct 2022 10:33pm)
  • Yeah I'm thinking I'll have to let them know I wouldn't be in until later. The bike is a good idea though. Thanks! by mnspencer0407 (Sat 29th Oct 2022 10:31pm)
  • Google says they're running but the first bus app and website both don't give a time for that early on a sunday. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 30th Oct 2022 12:07am)
  • That also honestly crossed my mind by mnspencer0407 (Sun 30th Oct 2022 12:07am)
  • Not mine but my partners.... I was at work one night (I work the night shift) and he woke up to see our dog standing in the hallway just outside our bedroom door. She's pitch black and in the dark all you can see are her eyes. It's super creepy. He called her to come to bed.... but then heard her on the opposite side of the room... where she was sleeping in her crate... freaked me out and I wasn't even there. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 30th Oct 2022 12:10am)
  • The ghosties are much more alive where I work hahaha especially the past few days......... phones ringing and no ones there.... door alarms going off when they hadn't be opened.... who knows? Maybe somethings following me lol by mnspencer0407 (Mon 31st Oct 2022 3:48am)
  • I'm not sure how much it would cost for three days but there's Concert Square Car Park right next to Buchanan bus station. There's also a Q Park on Sauchiehall but I think those can get a bit pricey. by mnspencer0407 (Sat 3rd Dec 2022 9:13am)
  • Thank you! Hopefully it's still there. by mnspencer0407 (Fri 3rd Feb 2023 6:39am)
  • I moved here before we could bring our dog and it was the most amazing thing. I was away from my girl for three months and asked if I could pet any dog I saw and not once was I told np. This city is amazing. by mnspencer0407 (Tue 22nd Aug 2023 9:40pm)
  • I once got on the bus with a literal skid mark on the seat next to me. Only reason I didn't move was because it meant no one was going to sit next to me. I think a wee bit of dog vomit is okay! by mnspencer0407 (Thu 24th Aug 2023 9:28pm)
  • Does the rail card discount apply to the season ticket? by mnspencer0407 (Sun 26th Nov 2023 10:38am)
  • I buy a monthly pass for the subway, which is about £50 and then I need to find the cheapest way to buy my train ticket ontop of that. I'm wondering if the rail card helps with the cost of a season scotrail pass by mnspencer0407 (Sun 26th Nov 2023 10:38am)
  • I was buying a daily ticket, but it's a pain and time consuming for someone that's lazy lol I'm wondering if the railcard discount applies to the scotrail season ticket if I buy a monthly one. Right now, it's only £3 cheaper to buy a ticket each day vs the monthly season ticket. by mnspencer0407 (Sun 26th Nov 2023 10:40am)
