  • To be fair to the garage just because something should fail an MOT and it hasn’t in the past doesn’t make it ok. Just means your MOT guy hasn’t noticed it yet. Also I’d be curious to see what they tried to up sell you, because if it’s things like a carbon clean of your engine or an air con service then it’s probably bullshit (just them trying to make money), but if it’s actual issues like the one you gave as an example then fair enough to them. If they missed an issue and you go out and it breaks you could bring legal action against them, so obviously they’re going to bring up every problem to you when you collect the car, and then it’s up to you to decide whether it needs fixed or not. It also stops the whole “ever since you did x on my car y has started happening”. I’m also not defending the garage, I’ve never been or worked there, but I’ve worked as a mechanic for a while now and can tell you sometimes people jump to thinking they’re being ripped off when in reality the mechanic is actually just doing their job properly and their car is a bit of a POS. by notahyundaimechanic (Wed 12th Aug 2020 9:49pm)
  • To be fair to them I have known a case where a stuck calliper lead to a tyre blow out. So they may have been exaggerating slightly but it’s still a pretty dangerous fault to be driving about with. If brake pad wear is uneven from side to side there’s a high likely hood it will be a stuck calliper I’m afraid, so that’s probably why they said that despite not having taken it all apart. If they put it on a ramp and the wheel did not turn easy then they would have all but confirmed it, but they’re not going to know for sure until they pull it all apart, which they won’t do because that alone would be an hours labour charged to you. Basically they could have told you 100% what the issue was but you’d be walking away with a bill of £60+ rather than £18. Most garages aren’t keen on people bringing their car in, finding out how much it costs and then leaving, the investigation is usually free if you get the work done but everywhere I’ve ever worked they will charge you if you want to take the car away. by notahyundaimechanic (Wed 12th Aug 2020 10:08pm)
  • DELETED Has anyone got any actual evidence that says this is true? I don’t wear a mask over my nose because I wear glasses that fall off my face when doing this. All research I’ve seen says that masks are less effective when only used over the mouth, but no evidence says that it’s the same as not wearing a mask. Personally I’m just grateful to see someone wearing a mask full stop. The amount of people I still see not wearing masks or socially distancing on a daily basis is insane. I think if you’re gonna be mad at someone be mad at those idiots, at least mouth maskers are making some sort of effort. by notahyundaimechanic (Thu 15th Oct 2020 10:58pm)
  • Better to spread a potentially life threatening disease than hurt someone’s feelings am I right? by notahyundaimechanic (Thu 15th Oct 2020 11:00pm)
  • DELETED So from what I read I’m more likely to get it than spread it, if I get it because I’m an idiot that’s fine, but there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that not wearing a mask over your nose causes you to spread the virus more. Definitely no evidence saying it’s as bad as not wearing a mask at all as originally stated. by notahyundaimechanic (Fri 16th Oct 2020 7:44am)
  • DELETED It’s not “so easy” for me, that’s why. If I wear a mask over my nose with my glasses which are quite loose fitting they literally fall of my face. It becomes a balancing act, between stopping my glasses falling off my face and keeping them from steaming up. I settle for second best so that I can actually see where I’m going, considering I have to work in a mask most of the time it’s a small sacrifice I’m willing to make since most research seems to indicate I’m the only one at risk. If you can find some research that says I spread the virus just as much as someone without a mask as the original commenter stated I’d love to see it. by notahyundaimechanic (Fri 16th Oct 2020 7:55am)
  • DELETED Aye, because that won’t look ridiculous at all. by notahyundaimechanic (Fri 16th Oct 2020 8:42am)
  • I’m just gonna stop replying. You guys have made your mind up that I’m the arsehole here, don’t fancy losing any more karma trying to have a reasonable discussion on the internet. by notahyundaimechanic (Fri 16th Oct 2020 2:13pm)
  • Pretty sure both the scotkarts in Glasgow are hiring at the moment. Not ideally suited to your background but if you’re looking for a quick start and a short commute they’re always looking. by notahyundaimechanic (Sun 1st Nov 2020 7:16pm)
  • Exactly my thoughts. We went there for the waterfall but had a wander after and the whole park is beautiful. by notahyundaimechanic (Fri 6th Nov 2020 4:35pm)
  • I’ve moved twice in Glasgow and currently on our third letting company. From my experience they’re all pretty shit. by notahyundaimechanic (Sun 17th Jan 2021 11:00pm)
  • Shit, my bad. by notahyundaimechanic (Thu 25th Feb 2021 11:53am)
  • Thank you :) by notahyundaimechanic (Thu 25th Feb 2021 12:31pm)
  • Why? by notahyundaimechanic (Tue 16th Mar 2021 1:09am)
  • This shit drives me nuts, why are people still buying dogs from puppy farms?? It’s a horrific business run by the absolute scum of the earth. There are plenty of dogs in adoption centres that need a home, give it to one of them instead of literally funding animal cruelty. by notahyundaimechanic (Tue 16th Mar 2021 1:12am)
  • Honestly I have an issue with “breeders” in general. I’ve met a fair few breeders in my time that treat the animals like their product and don’t give a damn whether they live or die as long as they can make a quick buck. If you’re looking to get a dog the first answer should always be adopting in my opinion. by notahyundaimechanic (Tue 16th Mar 2021 9:43am)
  • Tried that sadly. They always leave before any police turn up, if they turn up at all. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 2:51pm)
  • I’ve had these guys coming round and revving up their cars late at night all through lockdown. I’ve spoken to the police about it a couple times and still had nothing done. They come round, do burnouts and drive like idiots for 20 minutes - half an hour then leave. I’ve thought about just confronting these guys myself but I doubt it would end well for me considering there’s usually 5+ of them up there. Anyone have any advice for other people I could call rather than just talking to the police who seem overworked and uninterested in this. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 2:50pm)
  • I’ll try this, thank you. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 3:19pm)
  • Because there’s always 5+ of them. I don’t fancy getting leathered or knifed thanks. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 3:22pm)
  • Oof, would love to but 100% sure that’s against the law and I would likely be prosecuted for it no matter how annoying they’re being. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 3:20pm)
  • Jesus Christ. The reason I want them to leave is everyone is trying to get some sleep. I don’t think waking every cunt in a 5 mile radius really fixes that problem. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 3:34pm)
  • Man I wish I could get rid of this accent. Every Scottish person I’ve spoken to thinks I’m a posh English cunt and every English person I’ve spoken to thinks I’ve got a strong Scottish accent, looks like I don’t fit in anywhere. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:13pm)
  • I’m far from posh. Just where I live there’s a lot of knife crime so don’t fancy become a statistic. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:11pm)
  • Thanks mate. If it was just me I wouldn’t mind, it’s my neighbours that are family’s and old folk that I worry about. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:10pm)
  • I’ll get right on that… Anyone got any numbers for some ricin dealers? by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:15pm)
  • Yeah of course, it’s not top priority so I understand why they don’t come screaming round the corner with sirens on. It’s just frustrating reporting it and watching nothing get done. I went over to the people who own the carpark today and showed them this video and they’ve told me to email them a complaint and they’ll do their best to get a gate installed so they can lock it at night. Would be an ideal solution really. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:22pm)
  • I see what you’re saying but there’s literally a massive empty industrial estate not far from here where they would be disturbing no one. Why can’t they just piss off there and do this. As you can tell from the video this carpark is right in the middle of a housing estate so I highly doubt I’m the only one annoyed by it. This was 11:30pm on a Sunday night btw. Also I never claimed to be any kind of hero, I just try to think of other people, something we could really do with more of in this world. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:26pm)
  • Don’t know why everyone keeps assuming I’m a posh cunt. Is it just the accent you’re going off here? by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:30pm)
  • Yeah this was at around 11:30 on a Sunday. This isn’t the worst by far either, usually get a guy come up with a little VW with what sounds like no exhaust on it just revving the tits out of it. It’s ridiculously loud and the carpark just makes it echo so much worse. It’s annoying to say the least. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:38pm)
  • Police don’t seem to be much help, but I went down and spoke to the people who own the carpark and they said they’re gonna try to shut the carpark up at night. They seemed totally oblivious that this sort of thing was happening in their carpark. Hopefully this stops them and we can go back to the relative peace and quiet we had before lockdown. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 5:35pm)
  • I don’t think it’s that they won’t do anything, I think they’re just understaffed and have more important things to do. Thank you for the advice though. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 6:09pm)
  • It’s not a 12 but it is an iPhone. It’s just lens flair as those headlights are pointing right at the camera. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 6:28pm)
  • Yeah I’ve got no real issue with them doing this stuff but take it somewhere else. There’s plenty of deserted industrial estates round here, don’t know why they choose to do it here instead. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:18pm)
  • When I can hear them doing this over my tv it does get annoying yes. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:21pm)
  • Ohhhh, I’ve finally realise what you guys are on about. That’s a leaking pipe in my garden. Just the gutter dripping into the gravel lol by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:20pm)
  • “West end accent” hilarious, try again. It’s a rental mate I’m not fixing any of it. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 8:47pm)
  • Never would have thought the most controversial part of this post would be my accent. I know my accents fucked up because I’ve moved all over the place but Jesus Christ I didn’t think it was bad enough to start arguments. I was brought up in Dumfries and Galloway with English parents so that’s most of the reason none of you are recognising it. Can you all fuck off calling me posh or a Tory though, I’m far from it. I’ve been a life long Labour voter, I’ve worked my ass off for everything I’ve got and that’s not much. Just because I don’t have a Glaswegian accent doesn’t make me posh ffs. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 13th Sep 2021 9:09pm)
  • Honestly I’m not a super pro masker or anything, I just wear it when it’s mandatory as well. I just keep seeing so many people not even doing that it’s wild, especially since Glasgow seems to keep consistently being the worst affected area of Scotland by covid every time there’s a major outbreak. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 7th Feb 2022 10:08am)
  • I was zoned out waiting in the queue to buy a ticket and matey pushed into the queue coughed on me and fast walked away. Was so zoned out it took me a minute to figure out what had just happened, by then he’d gone through the ticket gate thing so I just shouted “what the fuck?” at him and went on with my day. Probably should have done more looking back, but nothing I can do about it now. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 7th Feb 2022 10:11am)
  • I was on the train into Glasgow from Paisley the other night and noticed 3 other people wearing masks in a full carriage. If that’s not a reduction I hate to think what it was like before. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 7th Feb 2022 12:01pm)
  • This is the attitude I find from most people who don’t wear masks, at the end of the day it’s just pure selfishness really. “I couldn’t give a fuck” just says it all doesn’t it. Wearing a mask truly is a selfless act because it protects others, not yourself, if you refuse to wear one the way I see it is you’re saying you just don’t care about other people. Wearing a mask sucks, I personally hate it but I care about my immunocompromised friends, my elderly neighbours and even my idiot anti vax colleagues and don’t want to pass them on a virus that could kill them or cause them serious harm. It’s really not that big an ask is it. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 7th Feb 2022 1:30pm)
  • If you’re willing to drive a little bit Mabie farm park near Dumfries has goats, last time I went they had baby goats that were incredibly cute. by notahyundaimechanic (Mon 7th Mar 2022 11:15am)
  • This is horrible to hear and I’m sorry you’re having to put up with this. I’m not shocked to hear the police aren’t getting involved, seems like they only turn up to literal life and death scenarios atm and even then they’re 2 hours late. Have you thought about contacting your local MSP or MP? If you can find someone who’s sympathetic to your situation they might be able to nudge the police into action. No expert here, just a thought. Stay safe. by notahyundaimechanic (Wed 14th Jun 2023 12:13pm)
