  • We offered 6.5% over home report on a 2 bed in Shawlands. At our absolute limit. Got in early and the seller needed to move ASAP so we did not go to closing. A big tip is to get a mortgage which offers a free 2nd home report as part of tbe package. Our flat was revalued at what we offered so now we have a tidy stack of cash. It's by no means guaranteed but it's definitely something to bear in mind. by qweerty93 (Sun 13th Jan 2019 6:37pm)
  • Get a mortgage broker. pm me and I'll pass you on mine's details. Our mortgage is with Santander and they offer to revalue the place for free. Basically it means for example: instead of paying a 10% depisit in 100k and 6k over hr out of pocket (16.5k total), you pay 10% deposit on 106.5k (10.65k total). So yes, bank willing to lend more, lower deposit = you can afford much more for a negligibly larger monthly payment. Obviously doesn't worl every time, they could value it the same again 1k more. by qweerty93 (Sun 13th Jan 2019 6:58pm)
  • So frustating. People act like it doean't happen in Glasgow but I've been followed, harassed, called a bitch and cunt for not wanting to flirt or give out my number. And I don't even go to clubs. by qweerty93 (Sun 13th Jan 2019 7:30pm)

  • Stirling and Linlithgow are probably the nicest towns on both train lines. If you've got money Dunblane, Bridge of Allan or Lenzie (though obviously that's a lot closer to Glasgow) could be good shouts. Something to bear in mind is thta neither GU or EU are close to the train stations so there'll be a 25 min subway commute for you and a 20 min walk (if she's at George Sq, obvs much longer if they sciencey campus) for her. by qweerty93 (Mon 30th Sep 2019 11:46am)
  • Uhhh to be fair you are massively overpaying. I just moved from a Partick 2-bed that was £750. It is not difficult to find 2 beds for less than 500k. by qweerty93 (Wed 2nd Oct 2019 7:06am)

  • I've had mine replaced at 3 GPs, in Stirlingshire, Edinburgh and Partick. Last time 3 years ago obviously. Not sure if GP surgeries are cutting back. Fuck I've been on this thing a long time lol Yeah they have closed all their satellite clinics due to lack of funding. It is so shameful. Dont know how vulnerable people are supposed to access such vital services. Sandyford are amazing by qweerty93 (Mon 27th Jan 2020 10:35pm)
  • Have they not closed all their satellite clinics? Where is it? What's it called? Can't see it on their website. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Jan 2020 8:20pm)

  • Yeah see tbh I was in QP today at about 4 for a walk and I saw two families meet up to play football, about 8 families sat on the grass sunbathing, 2 metres apart, but still. People need to get real about this. The lockdowns in Italy and Spain were more restrictive. If we don't distance, things will be worse for us than for them. by qweerty93 (Sun 19th Apr 2020 10:30pm)

  • Just looking at your history you have a really weird and creepy obsession with trans people. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 7:57am)
  • Hiya, you probably already know of them but Mermaids UK are great for supporting trans, gender non-binary ans questioning kids and their families. They will probably be able to put you in touch with families on the same path as you. LGBT Youth Scotland do evening youth groups too that could be a good shout once lockdown is over. Stonewall Scotland have a fab team of ambassadors incouding a guy who transitioned in his teens. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 7:56am)
  • I think your last sentence might be the key point. But just because the media distorts this stuff, 10 year olds don't get to make irreversible decisions about this stuff. The most the NHS will do is talking therapy and MAYBE puberty blockers (if they jump through lots of hoops, do individual and family therapy, group work etc.). Actual gender reassignment (testosterone or estrogen, any kind of surgery) happens after 17. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 9:14am)
  • That first sentence might be the most important part of your comment. Puberty blockers are pretty benign, certainly when compared to the consequences of dysphoria. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 9:15am)
  • Yeah, you're right. The whole idea is to allow them time to make the decision without such a time pressure. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 9:35am)
  • /r/OneJoke by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 10:45am)
  • Sandyford area are a great shout too, their staff are brilliant. The waiting lists can be really long but they're good about trying to use cancellations. Your son will be going to secondary over the next few years so it might be worth having a look into his catchment school and if they have any LGBT specific supports. If you wanna chat more about that side of things, DM me. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 10:59am)
  • Ugh why is this whole thread downvoted? People are shitty. Luckily they don't behave as badly irl most of the time. Puberty is a shitty ride when you don't have gender dysphoria so I don't get wishing that x100 on bloody pre-teens. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 11:04am)
  • OK, but you're still doing the One Joke. And it's as shit as it always has been. IDK if you don't want to come across that way, not making jokes like that seems like a pretty great way to start but you do you. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 2:35pm)
  • Every time you make a transphobic joke on the internet, think to yourself; am I part of the reason why 27% of trans young people have attempted suicide, 89% have considered it and 72% have self-harmed? Seriously, I get you were just trying to make a joke and you probably think I'm massively over-reacting. But you made a transphobic joke on a good faith post asking for help. That was pretty unpleasant. Even if you weren't trying to make that type of joke, that's how it came across. This is a sensitive topic and it deserves to be treated with more gravity than your joke gave it by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 3:41pm)
  • Fair enough but I think the text makes it clear. If you have a wee read through the comments or even take a wee look at the NHS website, you'll see it's not about changing gender but blocking puberty do the young person has time to reckon with their gender identity. Hormones and surgery aren't allowed until you're 17. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 4:00pm)
  • I know right! Modern medicine is crazy! by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 4:20pm)
  • I think I'd mostly just call you wrong tbh. My Masters thesis was all about LGBT young people's experiences in Scottish schools so it's something I've read a fair bit into. There's a lot of great reports out there where you can here from young folk themselves on the matter and there's a lot of research into protective and endangering factors for trans yp and suicide. We can chat about it if you like. And also, please don't act like trans folk are in any way new. They've always been here. Their poor mental health outcomes aren't a result of PC gone mad or whatever agenda the social right blames for trans folk existing. And if you have a wee look through my comments, you'll probably see that I'm not really for anyone deciding something about themselves at 10 and never going back. But puberty when you have gender dysphoria is not a nice experience and it's linked to lifelong mental health problems. So yeah, I think delaying puberty and getting breathing space over at leadt 7 yeard to make the decision is probably best. There wasn't ever really any issue with speaking back or wrongthink (though you're dogwhistling there and we both know it) but rather someone making a joke when the OP is looking for help and advice in good faith. Now if you want to have a good faith conversation about the issue, I'm engaged, but if you're going to act like I'm some dogmatic arsehole who grooms children and shouts down anyone who disagrees, or try to do a big "gotcha", then I'll wish you a pleasant evening. EDIT: Look I can see you posting about TRP and Jordan Peterson. To this end, I don't think this will be a fruitful conversation so have a nice evening. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 7:21pm)
  • I'm not sure that's what his joke did. Seems like maybe you read into it a little bit more than he had intended. Also not too sure what objective research I would do into the line about believing oneself to be Godzilla. :D by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 8:02pm)
  • OK, doesn't feel like we're getting anywhere. If you feel I'm being childish, perhaps it's because TRP philosophy has convinced you all women are children. I'm unsure of where the insult is, unless you consider your own worldview an insult. I don't claim to be clever but I have spent a great deal of my time and efforts on this exact topic. There are lots of things I'm not well-versed in but this isn't one of them and I won't bow and scrape because that makes you uncomfortable. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 9:55pm)
  • Bad habit, I admit, but it confirmed a suspicion. I offered to have a conversation but then you called me a smug child lol. Have a good night by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 10:11pm)
  • Oh I see, my mistake. Take a look at the NHS website, it might clarify some of the processes for you. by qweerty93 (Tue 28th Apr 2020 10:44pm)

  • Sexual harassment in Scotland and the UK is generally not too bad tbh. I've lived in Belgium (the WORST), France (ugh still terrible) and Spain (COMPARATIVELY fine) and here seems fine in comparison. But then again a man did choose to honk at me while I was running this week so maybe my standards are low. by qweerty93 (Wed 27th May 2020 1:35pm)
  • Not the sea but if you're just starting out Loch Lubnaig is an hour away and 6ft deep and its' deepest. by qweerty93 (Sun 7th Jun 2020 8:17am)
  • Honestly as a white teacher I have seen lots. A lot of staff preconceptions of pupils based on race. BAME pupils put into bottom sets regardless of proven ability and denied chances to sit certai qualifications. Higher behaviour and dress code standards for BAME pupils. Lacklustre responses to racial incidents. A view that BAME parents are either really intensely focused on their kids education or shit. Blaming any difficulty a BAME teacher has on incompetency. Some of this is implicit. I can say without a shadow of a doubt I have allowed implicit bias into my work. But staff are obsessed with being "not racist". It's not possible for us to be "not racist", we can only be anti-racist. by qweerty93 (Mon 8th Jun 2020 8:24pm)
  • Hard to prove people are being racist when these things aren't said allowed. Everything I can report, I do. Everything I can't, I try to challenge. by qweerty93 (Mon 8th Jun 2020 9:22pm)
  • These people are totally average and normal though. Most would generally be considered lefties or liberals. This is just the normal extent of implicit bias in this country. by qweerty93 (Mon 8th Jun 2020 9:49pm)
  • This is wildly extreme compared to what I'm describing here. The sort of people I am describing would never speak in this way. And yet they (we?) discriminate against BAME people daily and in meaningful ways. We won't make progress if we only focus on outrageous racism like that shown in the video here. by qweerty93 (Mon 8th Jun 2020 10:25pm)
  • It's so difficult to do, unbelievably uncomfortable. I've challenged people on racist lnaguage or tropes and, with people of this generation in particular, you have to treat them with kid gloves or they shut down and refuse to listen. So unbelievably fragile. This was probably exacerbated bh the fact that they aren't colleagues so don't trust or know each other. You saw people shaking heads as she spoke or looking away, that's the beginning. If one person in the group had challenged her, the rest may have joined them but there needs to be that one person. And I can tell you that it's fucking tiring always being that one person and having the woke/sjw reputation. People take your complaints less seriously too because you are always the one saying "nah you can't say that". by qweerty93 (Mon 8th Jun 2020 10:34pm)
  • My point isn't even that these people are terrible racists tbh. I know that I have allowed implicit bias to affect my work in the past. I'm sure I still do. My point is that there is a baseline of racism in this country and it is not low. by qweerty93 (Tue 9th Jun 2020 7:53am)
  • Fucking shite to hear of another school where this is the case. Being a teacher in these situations is fucking rough because you know you've perpetrated racism but you're also trying to fight it. Awful when you know the consequences on yp are so great. by qweerty93 (Tue 9th Jun 2020 5:50pm)
  • It depends on what it is tbh. If a child uses a racial slur in front of a teacher/witnesses, then yeah that's what's gonna happen. And I have to say my current school is better than my previous. But let me give you another example. A group of boys are mocking a girl who doesn't speak English well and has learning difficulties in a racist accent. She does not understand it is a racist accent. I rip them a new one and escalate. They all deny doing it and because the victim didn't understand what was happening enough to articulate it, they face no further consequences and spend the entire year complaining that I am sexist (lol) for "making up" what they did. This is the kind of thing that flies under the radar all the time. by qweerty93 (Wed 10th Jun 2020 8:17am)
  • I wouldn't do it personally. My 2 bed in Shawlands was 150k. by qweerty93 (Mon 6th Jul 2020 8:24am)
  • As a teacher, totally with you. Across the public sector, actual staff numbers are falling, support services are being decimated and our responsibilities are being multiplied. The shittest thing is when they try to pit us against each other. They can afford to pay us all decently. by qweerty93 (Sun 9th Aug 2020 6:44pm)
  • I actually think our 13.5%pay rise has sorted us out tbh. You're so right. Classroom assistant pay and conditions are shocking and we could NOT function without them. They do some of the toughest and most unrewarded grind in schools. It did not come off dickish in the slightest, I hope I did not come across that way because it was NOT my intention. I just wanted to send you a message of solidarity! ✊ by qweerty93 (Sun 9th Aug 2020 9:26pm)
  • Could have been a riot back then. If it's in Govanhill, it could have had slum housing in the block that was compulsary purchased. It could indeed have been a compulsary purchase order. by qweerty93 (Sun 16th Aug 2020 2:11pm)

  • We did it loads without a car! Daily tickets on the bus were always fine - just plan your days out well and be willing to walk a lot. • I've worked in schools all over Glasgow. Bright kids do well anywhere. Average and less gifted kids can be dragged down by poor T&L and behaviour. Many GCC schools are excellent. Why are you interested? by qweerty93 (Mon 5th Oct 2020 7:57pm)
  • If you want an inside perspective on a particular school, DM me The behaviour in GCC can be absolutely shocking. I won't lie. I wouldn't necessarily want a child of mine in the midst of it. It depends on the school tbh. The inner suburbs you mentioned are so pricey. I wouldn't put my family through a diminished lifestyle for a school that might not be worth the compromise. The outer suburbs in Renfrew and West Dun are better value IMHO. by qweerty93 (Mon 5th Oct 2020 8:34pm)
  • Yup, and it's shitey when you work 1 mile away in a deprived school. Nice White Parents is a great podcast about how the political prioritization of "parental choice" is fucking awful for equity. by qweerty93 (Mon 5th Oct 2020 8:55pm)

  • I taught in a school that served Easterhouse for a few years. Kids were the same mix as from any Glasgow scheme tbh. The place had a bad rep for gangs in particular and I did see some evidence of that (though I have from other schemes too). by qweerty93 (Sun 13th Dec 2020 6:41pm)

  • Offering to sign a 12 month lease rather than the standard 6 months generally does the trick in my experience. by qweerty93 (Fri 26th Feb 2021 1:25pm)
  • Kind of a shame. Bit of a fairytale moment for the club and the fans used it to demonstrate why so many of us fucking despise them. by qweerty93 (Wed 10th Mar 2021 6:24am)
  • Did they open the gates and hang out windows to greet the fans though? Feels like the club not only didn't condemn it but tacitly encouraged it. by qweerty93 (Wed 10th Mar 2021 6:23am)
  • When there are crowds of hundreds of people who are drinking heavily, setting off flares and fireworks, smashing benches and singing loudly, I do not feel safe travelling around the city. You do not have a right to make people feel unsafe in Glasgow because of "a decade of pain" (I'm not sure being a fan of a sports club really merits this much emotion in the grand scheme of things tbh). Things like this happen often with Rangers and I've only lived here for 7 years yet I've had so so so many negative experiences with Rangers fans making me feel really afraid on the street and public transport. I know not every fan is like this but after so many bad experiences, I'm thinking there is a serious culture problem amongst the fans. If you went out in town yesterday, I'm sorry but you were a part of that. by qweerty93 (Wed 10th Mar 2021 6:28am)
  • It's so difficult for children to be removed from their parents, especially if they are in their early teens and not dependent on their parents for immediate material needs (ie can prepare simple meals, wash themselves). If your relative is just an addict who is wrapped up in their addiction and not parenting actively, the chances of them being removed are slim to none. I would go to the social if I was you. They will help your relative and also open doors for things like counselling and external support (think respite stays, young carers groups, supportive interventions at school, mentors) for their kids by qweerty93 (Sat 13th Mar 2021 1:54pm)
  • That's one of the last things I did before lockdown. Went to see The Invisible Man and the place was deserted. Had a few wee jumps at the scary bits and it was a ball. Would love to do that again soon. by qweerty93 (Sat 13th Mar 2021 2:01pm)

  • We got a cat from Cats Protection about 2 months ago. WhatsApp video call home check and interview. Mostly checking we knew how to look after a cat and the house was big enough and not a riot. Advised to get rid of a big plant that was toxic to cats. The fosterer phoned us regularly for a month afterwards to help us with the cat settling in. by qweerty93 (Sat 15th May 2021 11:30am)
  • I'm not from Glasgow but I've always taught in Glasgow. The ratios are just so fucked. Like in most areas you have a certain proportion of young people coming from really difficult circumstances but in Glasgow it's such a high proportion. Most of my pals who work outside the city work in schools where there are like a dozen young people who have such fucking hellish home lives that all the staff know about them and know what strategies to use with them. It's just not possible to do that when there are so many. You end up fucking it on the daily. I'd be hesitant to send my own child to a GCC school. by qweerty93 (Wed 19th May 2021 6:45am)

  • You sound like a very sweet and earnest person. I'm sorry you've had such a difficult time of it. I don't really have any advice but to stick on in there unfortunately. It's difficult to make new friends. I moved to Glasgow almost 7 years ago now and I made friends but they were transient. It took me several years to make friends that I still have now. With regards to dating, I suggest trying one of less app-y dating sites, like OKCupid. You might be less likely to find people looking for casual situations there. by qweerty93 (Wed 19th May 2021 7:14pm)
  • Best of luck. It took me ages to accept more casual friendships while I was waiting for more meaningful ones but they did eventually come along. I'd advise looking out for another "new arrival" to the city for the time being for friendship because they are less likely to be established and will be wanting to build friendships and make weekend plans too. by qweerty93 (Wed 19th May 2021 7:56pm)

  • "I used a term that is widely considered to be hate speech. No! It is the other Redditors who are hateful and bigoted!" You're the one using the word retarded like a backwards 13 year old. Even kids get that that's weird and bigoted now. Calling folk retarded on the Internet is such a fucking riddie its unbelievable. by qweerty93 (Sun 30th May 2021 9:19pm)

  • Yeah and your teacher can advise you on whether it's worth an appeal. Like if you were very borderline between two grades. Sometimes people really just decide they were robbed when actually, the examiner might have been a bit lenient with them. by qweerty93 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 6:16pm)

  • I know you're not keen on the online world but unfortunately that's the way dating is going. I'd recommend OKCupid. It's where I met my fiancé and is quite well geared towards meeting a like-minded person. Read profiles, send a message referencing the profile and ask for a date. If the woman doesn't like the look of you or isn't serious about finding a relationship she'll kick it down the park. You don't have to chat on apps endlessly. Just say you have things in common and want to meet. Tbh engaging in public is off-putting and intimidating a lot of the time. Most women have only experienced harassment this way sadly. It's not your fault or anything wrong with you, it's just the way things are right now sadly. by qweerty93 (Tue 6th Jul 2021 11:31pm)
  • Definitely. Even if there was no covid it's a strategy that would take a wide social group and a lot of charisma to pull off. With covid I think it might be impossible. by qweerty93 (Wed 7th Jul 2021 12:20am)

  • I have no advice but my dad learned to swim when he was 40 and we were kids because we kept asking him to come in with us. He was absolutely terrified of water and I remember even though I as only 4-5 years old, I appreciated how scared he was and how much it showed he loved us and wanted to spend time with us. Do it because your kids will love it! by qweerty93 (Tue 27th Jul 2021 7:37am)

  • There's already basically nothing left here. Schools with ~1000 pupils have 1 EAL teacher. These pupils often sit an ESOL qualification rather than English. This would risk them leaving school with 0 qualifications in English. by qweerty93 (Tue 25th Jan 2022 11:03pm)

  • Sometimes when your mental health is really poor, you behave shockingly. I went through a breakdown with what transpired to be PTSD about 10 years ago and I lost many, many friends in the process. My behaviour was unpredictable, embarrassing and at time cruel but I was just in such overwhelming pain that I was seeking opportunities to disassociate, stimulation and attention in any way I could get it. It doesn't excuse it but after having recovered I can accept that while my behaviour during that period may reflect certain tendencies that I have, it isn't who I am and that I can redefine myself now I'm mentally well. by qweerty93 (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 6:19am)

  • DELETED It's been a while since I was in your position but what worked for me was offering a longer tenancy agreement. Seemed to be attractive to landlords as it reduced their admin headaches and changeover costs. I offered 12m minimum when the standard was 6m and got a place immediately. Might be worth a punt. by qweerty93 (Thu 14th Jul 2022 11:01pm)
  • Honestly, ASOS have some incredibly gorgeous dresses. I just got married so wedding dresses are always popping up on my Depop and there are some total bargains. Using Depop, i got my shoes for £100 (normally £400), my veil for £20 (rather than £70) and a hairpiece for £40 (originally £200). by qweerty93 (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 12:27am)

  • It's just the wildly self-unaware corporate/startup speak that leads to people unironically referring to space as a trend 💀 by qweerty93 (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 10:17am)
  • Oh my god hahahahahahaha, I'm sorry but this is really funny to me. I was just making fun of how absurd it sounds to refer to *space* as a trend. But I don't expect Musk bros to have any sense of irony. by qweerty93 (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 7:46pm)

  • How old are you? I only ask because I'm 30 and I found that most of the catcalling in Scotland stopped when I hit 27/28. A guy told me to sit on his face in the street on Thursday and that's literally the first time that's happened in months. I find Glasgow to be pretty tame in terms of catcalling and harassment. I've lived a few places too, including Brussels which is the most intense place I've ever been for it in Europe. Compared to NYC, I find Glasgow to be very low level for this stuff. It happened to me there while I was out with my husband (!), only ever had it while on my own here. My nastiest experiences have been at weird times too, like out running between 5am-9am. This is just my experience so yours may be different but I don't think Glasgow's too bad for it tbh. People here are very, very chatty so you definitely will get folk talking to you in pubs, bars and clubs but it's definitely not sexual or speculative most of the time tbh. Generally you can be straight and tell a guy you're not interested. There's also a scheme called "ask angela" in a lot of bars, so that if you're feeling uncomfortable, you ask a bar member for Angela and they'll call a taxi and get you away from the guy. Never used it but you see if advertised in bars a lot. by qweerty93 (Sat 23rd Sep 2023 6:25pm)
  • Aww, thanks for saying that, but honestly it is so rare I was literally only shocked lol I think I agree with the other commenter that said she may be reacting to the friendly, chatty nature of the city, but also she may just have had a very different experience to me, don't want to invalidate! by qweerty93 (Sun 24th Sep 2023 7:33am)
