  • Thought in general things were pretty good. Something that confuses me is the older folk not wearing masks. They are the first to complain about younger people (generally accepted to be healthy enough to barely notice a dose of the virus) but then head out without any protection? I saw a lady in a wheelchair with an oxygen bottle queuing to get into a coffee shop in town.. Now I understand that people do need to get out - but I don't think I'd risk it if I were in a high risk group.. by sailornj (Sat 11th Jul 2020 8:27am)
  • I studied at UoG and now live/work in Glasgow. The West End (Hillhead/Kelvingrove area) is hugely dominated by University of Glasgow students. The City Centre and East End tend to be predominantly Strathclyde University and GCU. Socially you definitely want to be nearer 'your' University area. I lived in Hillhead for 5 years, it was lovely but as mentioned above expensive on a student loan, and then horrifically expensive as a young professional. I moved to Dennistoun last year and can't even begin to describe how much better value it is. Our Street is a mix of older glaswegians and young professionals. A really nice atmosphere, and next to Alexandra Park - you're also on the way NE of the city for cycling. There really aren't that many 'bad' areas - only areas where there will be definitely less of a student feel. Ask away - take a look on rightmove and see where the gaps are :) by sailornj (Wed 15th Jul 2020 8:28am)
  • Didn't really think about the time of year to be fair. Hopefully some bargains appear next year. Guess I'm just a sucker for a bargain! Im looking for a tenement style building, but a nice modern kitchen/bathroom which seems to be a bit of a rarity in rentals, but standard in flats for sale. On the crime note, I got robbed living on GWR just behind Oran Mor. Police arrived in about 20 mins, then went into the chip shop below for lunch for half an hour 😂 by sailornj (Mon 28th Dec 2020 11:29pm)
  • Yeah, that's what we are after. Either a really spacious 1 bed, or 2 bed for a home office as I'm leaving my job to study for a while. Budgeted for 700pcm rent only for 2 years and still finding a good deal elusive.. Hopefully things pick up after Christmas. by sailornj (Mon 28th Dec 2020 11:31pm)
  • There is hope then 😂 fingers crossed some nice ones crop up - as someone else said, better to have a nice space when I'm stuck at home for months than have money I can't even go out and spend. I lived in London for a while and was stuck in a lease agreement after I had taken a new job back in Glasgow. At least you can always move quickly in Scotland! by sailornj (Tue 29th Dec 2020 1:22am)
  • No objections really. I also don't really have any objections to private landlords etc. I accept that it might cost more than I'd like to pay - this post was more about Covid price fluctuation more than anything. IMO the onus should be on local area councils and government to provide accessible affordable accommodation for all who want it. Private prices will fall if the availability and quality of accommodation increases? by sailornj (Tue 29th Dec 2020 12:41pm)
  • In and around the Barras is getting quite nice, hot tip for the next hipster hangout. Pity the bar in BaaD seems to be closing down tho by sailornj (Tue 29th Dec 2020 2:10pm)
  • It's a good venue. Seems a shame for the old crowd though, they put a lot of work in to get the kick from the landlord during lockdown by sailornj (Tue 29th Dec 2020 2:34pm)
  • My experience of West End renting was expect to pay no less than 450pcm per room - that's the stomachable student price for most. Also expect to get a not so nice student flat for that amount. Be prepared to pay around 550/600 min. Better to share when you are a student. 2 bed seems the sweet spot, and more and it's HMO so you will likely have to pay 450 or so each anyway because landlords know that's the "price". FYI that's the price of halls in first year so most come out into second year expecting to pay the same. by sailornj (Tue 29th Dec 2020 10:21pm)
  • I've lived in Scotland almost my entire life, I'm aware there are other places to live that may be better value. Most of my friends are in or around Glasgow so to be honest that's worth being here. I've almost mentioned three points of the Glasgow compass because I'm not too fussed about the North. Apologies if that isn't open minded enough for you 😂😂 by sailornj (Fri 1st Jan 2021 2:55am)
