  • While it would be cool to see the Subway extended, if Glasgow is really serious about improving public transport, the number one priority that needs to happen is either public ownership of buses, or bus franchising; similar to London - where private companies can still operate but the council has full control over routes, fares, and timetables, and can integrate all modes of travel (bus, train, Subway, ebikes) with integrated ticketing (like London's Oyster card) with a daily price cap. I don't have much hope that this will happen since the council loves to cosy up to the private operators, but it's hard to overstate how much economic and social benefit this would have for the city. As long as the status quo remains in place, bus ridership will continue to plummet, as it has for decades, even pre-covid. by thebluealpaca97 (Mon 23rd Nov 2020 3:47pm)
  • Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but it's heartening to see more news on bus franchising. Transport for Greater Manchester is actively moving in that direction and it would be a massive social and economic benefit to Glasgow. I can only hope that in a post-covid world, operators who exist on already tight margins will warm to the idea and Glasgow can gradually develop an integrated transport network worthy of a European city of its size. • That's true. My concern is that nothing will happen unless the companies warm to the idea since the city council loves cosying up to the operators with "private partnerships". There's also the possibility that they will lobby against such proposals. If the council has any guts, though, they'll make use of last year's Transport Act and set up franchising. They have the public on their side. No one's defending First Bus. by thebluealpaca97 (Sun 6th Dec 2020 8:32pm)
