  • If you're concerned about starting from third year at UWS I imagine you could ask them to let you start in 2nd? In any case, contacting the admissions team and explaining how you feel about it might be a good start. They'll be able to answer your questions. They wouldn't be offering you third year entry if they didn't think you could do it, so that's something to consider too. Also, if you get a chance you should visit the University to see how you feel about the setting/getting there. Open days are great but you can learn a lot by just wandering around on your own too. by thydawn (Fri 17th May 2019 1:21pm)
  • I'm trans and an SNP member, Mhari Black is one of the biggest trans allies in the party. Keeping her in position is one of the best things you can do to help improve the party's position on trans people. Elsewhere it's less clear cut, if you have moral objections to voting for the party on the basis that it's bad on trans rights that's understandable. In some places removing SNP Transphobes by tactical voting might be a good idea? Also worth noting that there are individual candidates in Labour, the Lib Dems and even the odd Green who have less than perfect positions on trans rights, and also many SNP candidates (like Mhari) who are solid trans allies. by thydawn (Tue 10th Dec 2019 7:38pm)
  • Museums/Art Galleries/bookshops often work pretty great. You're not stuck on the opposite side of the table from each other and you can skip the awkward small talk because there are literally hundreds of things to talk about. It'll also let you get a good feel of what she's interested in and what your common interests are. If it's going well - go for a coffee afterwards. Or a drink. Or a walk down by the Clyde. by thydawn (Sun 25th Jul 2021 1:54pm)
  • In the Highlands/more remote areas - if you're upstream of any possible livestock and buildings then the water should be fine. Generally the faster moving the better. Outside taps exist in a few places and usually they're fine. Most shops or cafes will be happy to refill your water too. Especially once you're out of the city. by thydawn (Wed 4th Aug 2021 11:41pm)
  • I don't think it's just litter. Things during the first lockdown in particular were unbelievably awful in the city centre and I don't think the city has ever really recovered. The streets feel far more dangerous now than they ever did before and there's clearly a lot more of a problem with litter and vandalism. I never used to be that worried about travelling through the city centre at night but now I'm really trying to avoid it. George Square in particular feels a lot less safe. by thydawn (Sun 8th Aug 2021 5:53pm)
  • Christ, I've seen that before, real nasty stuff. No, I wasn't around for the 80s or 90s and I was pretty young in the 00s. I'm in my 20s so I only really have the last decade to compare it against. by thydawn (Sun 8th Aug 2021 8:31pm)
  • There's more street drinking and people lurking on the streets, while there are comparatively far fewer people just going about their business, especially at night. I don't think it's necessarily more dangerous but it feels a lot more tense for sure. by thydawn (Sun 8th Aug 2021 10:47pm)
  • A good solution is a £20 bike and a £50 lock. I'm not actually kidding. by thydawn (Fri 13th Aug 2021 7:16pm)
  • Or, park in Glasgow Central. Shouldn't have much trouble there. by thydawn (Fri 13th Aug 2021 7:29pm)
  • Hm that's kinda surprising. I've seen people openly steal from Buchanan street bike racks in daylight this summer though so I figured the station ought to be better? by thydawn (Fri 13th Aug 2021 7:40pm)
  • That is a bit of a theme on here. But also, over the last year or so the city centre feels like it's declined a lot. I can see both sides I guess. by thydawn (Fri 13th Aug 2021 7:54pm)
  • Unfortunately bolt cutters are cheap to buy and easily hidden. My local cheap hardware shop used to keep it's mini backpack sized bolt cutters underneath it's selection of bike locks. I really wonder if it was intentional by thydawn (Fri 13th Aug 2021 7:58pm)
  • Ebay, Gumtree, Facebook, asking friends/family if they have an old bike lying around you can have. It's not that difficult but they usually need a bit of work to make them roadworthy. by thydawn (Fri 13th Aug 2021 8:26pm)
  • If you're using a Kryptonite U lock properly then there's probably not much more you can do, unless you want to use two Kryptonite U locks. If you're really worried, switch out any quick releases and use a cable lock for other parts that could be taken. by thydawn (Sat 14th Aug 2021 5:52pm)
  • Pre-Covid the Universities allowed non-students to pay a fee to join the library. Pretty sure this is suspended but with things getting back to normal that might be coming back at some point. It's possible to enter other university study spaces (especially at UofG) without being asked to show a student card but probably inadvisable. Other than that, finding a nice cafe is maybe your best bet? by thydawn (Mon 27th Sep 2021 8:41pm)
  • Last year I ventured into the basement of TJ Hughes and I thought it reminded me of going to department stores with my grandparents in the early 00s. Then I found some electronics from 2007ish on display in a corner and I figured out why. It seems like they'd literally forgotten about an entire display. by thydawn (Fri 1st Oct 2021 12:33am)
  • Yeah I've seen it happen but challenging someone with a mini-grinder or bolt cutters isn't the most appealing proposition. by thydawn (Mon 22nd Nov 2021 2:09pm)
