  • My former local and maybe the best pub I’ve ever visited. One night there was a do going on in the back room and they brought the rest of their buffet food down to the rest of the pub. Wonderful. by tropicalginger (Sun 12th Jul 2020 11:26am)
  • Kings Park is nice and has a wee hidden walled garden. I've seen a few joggers doing laps when it's quiet. by tropicalginger (Tue 14th Jul 2020 10:48am)
  • Lived on Shakespeare Street for 8 years and it was a lovely place to stay. Nice and quiet, barely any trouble and a decent sense of community. by tropicalginger (Thu 16th Jul 2020 5:20am)
  • When you say Armstrongs is a bit of a dive, how much of a dive are we talking? by tropicalginger (Tue 21st Jul 2020 10:04pm)
  • I used to drink at the Clockwork when I studied at Langside College back in 2001/2002. I remember it being quite good, and the whole microbrewery thing was a rarity. by tropicalginger (Tue 21st Jul 2020 10:06pm)
  • Ahh, I see. I had a look and it’s Belhaven Pubs. They themselves are owned by Greene King who are responsible for some of the scabbiest boozers I’ve ever visited. by tropicalginger (Tue 21st Jul 2020 10:37pm)
  • FFS I’ve lived down in England for the last 7 years! I was hoping to hear less of that and more Glaswegian. Not that I have anything against English accents, just making that very clear. by tropicalginger (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 12:06am)
  • I can recommend North Kelvinside as well. I used to live on Shakespeare Street. It was a great wee starter flat. 10 minutes walk down to Byres Road and well connected for buses to the city centre. by tropicalginger (Fri 24th Jul 2020 12:23pm)
  • What’s a “Maryhill”? by tropicalginger (Fri 24th Jul 2020 2:51pm)
  • I don’t know if it’s open yet but there’s a brilliant view from the top of the Lighthouse on Mitchell Lane. You have to walk all the way up the spiral staircase but it’s worth it. by tropicalginger (Sun 26th Jul 2020 12:59pm)
  • Ah bollocks, that’s a scunner by tropicalginger (Sun 26th Jul 2020 9:15pm)
  • You could try one of Scotland’s Dark Sky Parks. I’ve always wanted to visit them and try some proper astrophotography. [Link](https://www.visitscotland.com/see-do/landscapes-nature/dark-sky-parks-sites/) by tropicalginger (Sat 1st Aug 2020 10:14pm)
  • Ned Thunderdome. Two rockets enter, one zoomer leaves. by tropicalginger (Tue 4th Aug 2020 9:48am)
  • Get out of here with that heathen nonsense. The oyster is clearly superior. by tropicalginger (Mon 10th Aug 2020 12:12pm)
  • Right I’m going to need an old priest, a young priest and something to clean up the pea soup. You’re clearly in the thrall of some demonic entity. by tropicalginger (Mon 10th Aug 2020 12:18pm)
  • She’s well and truly drunk the Kool-Aid. My sister-in-law was spouting a load of QAnon bollocks the other day. I had to gently deprogram her over tea and biscuits. Frightening stuff, she gets it all from her mate on Facebook and just believes it unquestioningly. by tropicalginger (Sat 15th Aug 2020 4:34pm)
  • I explained to her that the whole Wayfair thing was nonsense because given the thousands of products they stock, that it was inevitable that some would match up with the names of people who had gone missing. I also pointed out that many of the missing children were actually no longer missing since it’d happened years ago. That worked pretty well. I then went on to talk to her about the Pizzagate stuff. I pointed out that it was awfully convenient that the targets of this conspiracy just happened to be Trumps political opponents and celebrities who have criticised him. Lastly I explained the seductive appeal of conspiracy theories. In a chaotic, random world it’s deeply appealing to attribute the awful things that happen to a grand conspiracy. That they’re not random and unplanned but instead they’re intentional. by tropicalginger (Sat 15th Aug 2020 5:59pm)
  • About an hour drive from Glasgow is Carron Valley Reservoir. It’s a really pleasant walk around quite nice scenery but not too taxing if you’re not into a big hike. by tropicalginger (Tue 18th Aug 2020 2:09pm)
  • Misread that first line, thought the campaign was getting really aggressive for a second. by tropicalginger (Mon 24th Aug 2020 12:53pm)
  • Do you take commissions? I have a pub I’d love to see sketched in your style. by tropicalginger (Tue 25th Aug 2020 12:41pm)
  • The last time I was in town was back in early March. It was before lockdown etc but the vibe was horrible. Beggars, junkies, neds and a general air of anger and hostility. I couldn’t believe it was the same city I’d left in 2013. by tropicalginger (Wed 26th Aug 2020 4:19pm)
  • King’s Park is really nice. My folks live on the main avenue. Kingsbridge Drive is also a really nice street. Burnside is beautiful. I grew up there and it’s a great place to raise a kid. Battlefield is really nice. I’m there at the moment and it’s got a nice vibe, decent flats and some good cafes and restaurants. Plus the Newton line is very good for the city centre. by tropicalginger (Sat 29th Aug 2020 3:35pm)
  • Messaged you a place I found by tropicalginger (Sat 29th Aug 2020 3:46pm)
  • From what I’ve observed as someone who’s covered the end of year shows a few times, it’s increasingly a place where technical skill isn’t valued and isn’t taught. Instead it’s a place for badly executed concepts and ideas. There’s been a few bright spots over the years, usually from people who have studied elsewhere and transferred in to GSA. But on the whole it’s a pretty dire place that’s become horribly complacent and over-reliant on its reputation. by tropicalginger (Mon 31st Aug 2020 2:11pm)
  • Oh no, a fat handed twat like me couldn’t have done this. They’re wee kits I got from Shop of interest in Finnieston a few years ago. The tenement one is still available but the crane is discontinued. by tropicalginger (Tue 1st Sep 2020 1:27pm)
  • The tenement is nickel silver according to the designers website - https://www.finchandfouracre.co.uk/shop-modelkits/tinyment The crane is by a guy called Christian Pomeroy but I don’t know what it’s made of. Brass maybe? by tropicalginger (Tue 1st Sep 2020 2:54pm)
  • That’s a bingo by tropicalginger (Tue 1st Sep 2020 2:51pm)

  • You’re welcome! I am definitely not paid a commission to promote her products... by tropicalginger (Tue 1st Sep 2020 5:51pm)
  • Before I bought my big A3+ printer I used Deadly Digital over in Partick. Fantastic printers and great guys to work with. by tropicalginger (Fri 4th Sep 2020 2:47pm)
  • Loxley are good but I always found them quite dear. And I liked the range of papers on offer at DD. by tropicalginger (Fri 4th Sep 2020 3:18pm)
  • I’ll second Tinderbox. They’re open until 11pm according to their website, although I don’t know if that’s still the case during lockdown. by tropicalginger (Fri 4th Sep 2020 7:47pm)
  • Robert Graham in town sells chew bags including White Fox and Siberia. They’re a great place to go, I get my cigars from them. [Link](https://www.robertgraham1874.com/browse/c-Cigars-Tobacco-34/c-Chew-Bags-113/) by tropicalginger (Fri 4th Sep 2020 7:52pm)

  • I managed to solder the jumper wire ok on the mod chip but the pads on the player are much smaller. I have shaky hands from a neurological condition so I’m fairly certain I’d just cock that part up. by tropicalginger (Mon 21st Sep 2020 6:49pm)
  • Those were beautiful days weren't they? Thankfully they all sense with 4K UHD discs since they're 100% region free. by tropicalginger (Mon 21st Sep 2020 9:12pm)
  • Ah cheers mate, I got a fella near me in Battlefield to do it. Appreciate the offer though. by tropicalginger (Tue 22nd Sep 2020 2:33pm)
  • There’s Fopp on Union Street and HMV on Argyle Street. They’ll definitely have classical but I’m less certain about SACD as it’s a niche format. Fairly certain that both of them are still open at the moment. by tropicalginger (Wed 23rd Sep 2020 2:01pm)
  • I’ve heard if you hang around Queens Park after dark you can find some very fresh meat indeed. by tropicalginger (Sat 26th Sep 2020 1:08pm)

  • Haha! I moved to Battlefield, so I agree 100%. by tropicalginger (Sat 26th Sep 2020 4:56pm)
  • Down south in Oxfordshire. It’s a nice place but I missed being here. The people aren’t the same down there and I couldn’t get square sausage. Ridiculous. by tropicalginger (Sat 26th Sep 2020 5:19pm)
  • “One of us, one of us...” by tropicalginger (Sat 26th Sep 2020 6:14pm)
  • I have no idea what you’re talking about. But just in case, I’d suggest you don’t talk about this with anyone else. by tropicalginger (Sat 26th Sep 2020 10:31pm)
  • Yea but don’t reveal my secret identity by tropicalginger (Sun 27th Sep 2020 9:53am)
  • Oh cool! It’s a beautiful city but my god it’s hellish during the summer. The streets fill up with tourists, the worst among them are the Chinese tourists. They seem to think they’re wandering around a theme park and not a functioning city. More than once I’ve seen them walk out in front of traffic so they can get a better photograph. Oxfordshire is a beautiful place. Each little town seems to have at least one belter of a pub and/or cafe. by tropicalginger (Sun 27th Sep 2020 10:33am)
  • Not sure if you’ve done this yet but try posting on the various south side Facebook community groups. There’s one for Battlefield that’s very active and another for Strathbungo which is even more so. I’d imagine you’ll get a good bit of interest there. by tropicalginger (Tue 29th Sep 2020 1:23pm)
  • 3rd for Battlefield Rest. Excellent food, beautiful restaurant. Their wine selection is decent too. by tropicalginger (Tue 29th Sep 2020 2:30pm)
  • Battlefield. It’s cheaper than the west end, we’ve got some spectacularly good bakeries (Grain & Grind, Big Bear Bakery), supermarkets etc nearby and we’ve got Queens Park right on our doorstep. by tropicalginger (Mon 12th Oct 2020 7:42pm)
  • Wild Gorse Pottery in Shawlands. Got a couple of really beautiful pieces from them. https://wildgorsepottery.com Association of Glasgow Bakers sell really cool bread making kits with locally sourced flours, yeasts, salts etc https://www.glasgowbakers.co.uk by tropicalginger (Sat 17th Oct 2020 5:29pm)

  • Oh hell no! This guy had three or four boxes, the most expensive were £15. These were £9, which is not bad. by tropicalginger (Mon 19th Oct 2020 9:15am)
  • The thought did occur to me, but these haven’t been used. The backs are completely clean, no plaster or anything. But now you’ve got me thinking I can save some money when I want more. Just get a chisel and go for it. by tropicalginger (Mon 19th Oct 2020 12:38pm)
  • These ones came from Edinburgh apparently. I found a company making replica tiles but they’re absurdly expensive. About £25 per tile! The company is Replicata. Benefit of buying one of their tiles is that it’ll be “perfect” whereas the ones at this antique place had wee nicks and chips etc. by tropicalginger (Mon 19th Oct 2020 12:43pm)
  • We are, and it’s really interesting to see the level of ornamentation present in what are fairly standard flats. I used to live up in Maryhill and even there our close had nice tiles and stained glass and this was by no means a fancy place to live. by tropicalginger (Tue 20th Oct 2020 11:02am)

  • Going out again tonight with my brother and his family, feels like there’s a lot we didn’t see yesterday by tropicalginger (Mon 26th Oct 2020 6:06pm)

  • Battlefield is great. We moved here from England last year after 7 years of being away from Glasgow. It’s a nice neighbourhood, relatively quiet and with decent cafes and shops. You’re a short walk from Shawlands/Strathbungo, Queens Park is on your doorstep, Linn Park is nearby. City centre is a short train ride from Mount Florida station. • It’s a relatively minor gripe, but as someone living in Battlefield it irritates me that whenever a gig is on at Hampden our streets become absolutely choked with extra cars. The worst offenders are the people who LITERALLY park on the fucking pavement. Not a wee bit on the pavement, but the whole car on the pavement. They can get in the fucking sea. by tropicalginger (Thu 30th Jun 2022 6:18pm)

Check out jobs.ac.uk as well as the individual pages for UoG, Strathclyde, Caledonian and UWS. IMO, having worked for plenty of universities across the UK, I vastly prefer them to working in the private sector. by tropicalginger (Sun 7th Aug 2022 8:57pm)
