  • I think it's a bit rich to blame the Conservatives on this one. GCC is run by the SNP and the deal was agreed in coalition with the Greens. The SNP were the ones who implemented a council tax freeze, but it's completely unrealistic to think it cannot rise. by youwhatwhat (Thu 20th Feb 2020 11:07pm)

Despite the government guidance saying we should work from home where possible, my work is still open and is encouraging us to work in the office to "business reasons" where possible. They pedestrianise the whole street for social distancing, but then everyone is channeled through one entrance at the south... great thinking GCC! At the absolute least they should open one of the gates at the north end of Kelvin Way but nevertheless, closing gates will not solve the problem. by youwhatwhat (Thu 9th Jul 2020 11:13pm)

  • If Scotrail and the unions don't agree to resolve the strikes before Cop26, I do hope Michael Matheson is booted from his position. It's absolutely shocking that the Scottish Government are letting these strikes go ahead during one of the biggest events Scotland has ever had. They have had over seven months of Sunday strikes and yet we are on the verge of having nothing during Cop26. As if those in the central belt don't have to deal with enough disruption as it is, but now the only easy way to get round Glasgow will be going as well. This has been a complete and utter shambles from the Scottish Government. by youwhatwhat (Mon 25th Oct 2021 4:02pm)

  • Yeah you're the asshole I'm afraid. Seems like many cyclists here and in the rest of the UK think that road rules apply to them when convenient. As a cyclist, if you're part of traffic, you obey the same rules as the rest of traffic. As a side note, it brought me a bit of joy seeing some moronic deliveroo cyclist being booked by a police officer for running a red light outside High Street Station a year or so ago. Some of them are a real liability jumping lights and weaving inbetween traffic. by youwhatwhat (Fri 5th Nov 2021 11:51pm)

  • My girlfriend tested positive for covid yesterday on a rapid test. No symptoms other than a small cough. We wouldn't be fussed about it in normal times as we were boosted weeks ago, however we're now stuck in the US for god knows how long. It's 1am here and my head is in a spin trying to work out what the ever loving fuck to do. Fortunately we can isolate at her families home as they live here but I've no idea if I should follow US rules which are less onerous than at home (only 5 days self isolation for positive cases, nothing for close contacts). Technically I don't need to isolate at the moment although I still am. US rules suggest we can still return this weekend assuming we both get negative tests. However, Scottish rules mean I'd have to stay here until about January 14th, even if I continue to test negative. Fuck knows what I'll do with my rental car here, work, flights and car parking in Edinburgh - it's really ruined what was otherwise a good trip, especially for my girlfriend as she hadn't seen some of her family and friends for two years now. Guess that's the risk of travelling abroad at the moment though. Anyway, hope your day/week does better than mine. Just needed to get that off my chest! • Another blow to Sauchiehall Street. I hope those in government at both a local and national level are having serious conversations on how to regenerate our high streets - this will leave another big hole in what is already a fairly bleak street. Article text below for anyone who doesn't have access: >Marks and Spencer on Sauchiehall Street is to close permanently under new proposals from the high street brand. In what is a further blow to the already troubled shopping street, the historic branch of the high street chain will shut its doors for good in April if plans go ahead. >Bosses said "changing shopping habits" were to blame for the proposed closure and investment would be made in the Argyle Street branch instead. >It is not yet known if jobs will be lost or if staff will be redeployed elsewhere but a spokeswoman for the company said M&S will work to ensure that as many staff as possible can be offered alternative roles within the firm. >David Bates, M&S Regional Manager, said: “Shopping habits are changing, and this means we need to focus our investment on the right stores in the right places so we can provide the very best shopping experience for our Glasgow customers. "As part of this transformation, we have today announced to colleagues our proposals to close our Sauchiehall Street store in April 2022. This decision means we can invest in our 12 other Glasgow stores including nearby M&S Argyle Street - so we keep pace with the demands of our customers today and in the future. Our priority now is to talk to our colleagues about what this announcement means for them and to support them through these changes.” >The Art Deco frontage of Marks and Spencer's Sauchiehall Street branch has been a landmark on the street since opening in November 1935. It was just one of a number of department stores that lined the popular shopping venue, including nearby Watt Brothers, which closed in 2019. >Glasgow's first M&S branch opened towards the end of World War I in 1918 in a small unit on Argyle Street. It made several moves to different buildings along the street before the firm finally opened the current branch on June 8, 1966. >The Sauchiehall Street M&S has been in the same building since 1935, making it the city's longest-serving branch. by youwhatwhat (Tue 18th Jan 2022 6:49pm)

  • Article below for anyone who can't get access. Definitely wasn't expecting this and would be surprised if it goes ahead but I reckon it would be a good change to the city if it does. >A plan to demolish Buchanan Galleries is under way to pave the way for a massive transformation of the top of Glasgow’s famous shopping street. >The proposal is to “replace” the shopping mall with a multi-purpose shopping, residential and office quarter. It would see new public squares created, new streets with street-level entry to shops and Buchanan Street opened up through to Killermont Street and Buchanan Bus Station. The Royal Concert Hall would not be affected by any plan. >The developer, Landsec, the Buchanan Galleries owners, is in talks with the council for the huge redevelopment of the Galleries into a “new master-planned mixed-use quarter”. It will also see work to cover the railway at Queen Street Station beside the current car park and include Dundas Street. >To deliver the proposed “physical reconfiguration of Buchanan Galleries” with other uses and create a “new streetscape” based on the wider city centre "grid network" it will need to involve demolition of the mall, to allow the transformation. >Work could start next year on a 10-year project, which is still at a concept stage, which would be the most significant development in the city centre since Buchanan Galleries was opened in 1999. The idea is to create a plan that responds to the climate emergency and addresses the changing shopping habits exacerbated by the pandemic. >The news comes after the Glasgow Times revealed this week that Marks & Spencer is to move out of its Sauchiehall Street store after almost 100 years. There are several empty units in Buchanan Galleries and on the street, with Top Shop, Burton, Gap and Paperchase all leaving large voids. >Rather than pulling out of Glasgow, however, the owners say they are planning for the future and the transformation could see more than 850 construction jobs created each year during the build phase leading to more than 9,500 permanent jobs for the city centre. Shops will form part of the new plan and discussions with major retailers in the centre, like John Lewis, will take place. >Glasgow City Council, which owns the land on which Buchanan Galleries sits, must agree to any development proposal. It said the plan fits with the council’s agenda of moving away from single use areas, like retail-only. to multi-use, of retail, residential, leisure and office. >David Heaford, managing director, development, at Landsec, said: “Cities around the world are learning to adapt to the public’s changing habits and we want to help Glasgow to be well-positioned to do the same. Our vision is to replace the existing shopping centre with an exciting new mixed-use urban neighbourhood in the heart of Glasgow city centre, blending world-class shopping with places to work, live and play. Our plans will seek to extend the city’s iconic and accessible grid layout, support the city’s net-zero ambitions and be informed by the needs and views of local people, visitors and businesses. We will be launching a wide-ranging consultation, kicking off in the spring, to help create a place that makes a lasting positive contribution to the city and all those who live, work and visit here.” >The council said the proposals “reflect changes in retailing, exacerbated and accelerated by the pandemic, and other city centre impacts and trends”. >It is hoped that by acting now a transformation of the top of Buchanan Street will deliver a re-purposed and sustainable city centre. It is believed while the pandemic’s impact has been severe on all urban centres with a general swing at the present time towards smaller town centres and local areas, Glasgow city centre is still an attractive location for investment. Any comprehensive redevelopment of the Galleries would require the approval of the council as head landlord. >Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Landsec’s aspirations for Glasgow and their proven track record in delivering high-quality mixed-use developments would be transformational at this incredibly challenging time. As a valued long-term investor in the city, we look forward to them bringing forward innovative plans that could position Glasgow in the vanguard of covid recovery. The scale of ambition of this private sector investment should be welcomed with open arms.” >Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow, like town and city centres everywhere, is facing significant and accelerating structural changes. These initial proposals detail a response to those changes, ensuring Glasgow has a vibrant, successful and evolving city centre which continues to be the envy of our peers. Approval for the commencement of negotiations with Landsec would allow us to push ahead with addressing oncoming challenges and opportunities in this rapidly changing world. A 21st century city centre delivering on Glasgow’s international standing and ambitions means more mixed-use developments, a greater residential population, more public spaces, sustainable transport options and more people-focused streets. The transformation of the Buchanan Galleries can be a vote of confidence on Glasgow’s future.” by youwhatwhat (Fri 21st Jan 2022 12:59pm)

  • Article text below: >Glasgow City Council is the latest local authority to announce it is imposing a 3% council tax rise in April. Council tax was frozen across Scotland last year but Finance Secretary Kate Forbes gave local authorities the freedom to increase it as much as they liked for the 2022 financial year. Ms Forbes did announce a £150 council tax rebate or discount for homes in bands A to D and for people who qualify for reduced rates amid a cost-of-living crisis and soaring energy bills. >Councils had criticised a £371 million real-terms funding cut in this year's SNP-Green draft budget, with umbrella group Cosla warning large tax hikes were inevitable. The Finance Secretary subsequently announced an additional £120 million to try to avoid "inflation-busting" council tax rises and to support people with the cost of living. >But Scotland's largest council, Glasgow, has now confirmed that council tax will increase by 3%, following Edinburgh and East Lothian whose councils also passed similar levels of tax rises. In total, the city expects to raise just over £321 million in council tax in the next year, with the 3% increase in council tax taking band D charges to £1,428 - £42 more than in 2021-22. >SNP councillor and treasurer Ricky Bell said: "The investment we're making in our communities through this budget may not quite signal a return to normal but will help residents recover confidence and satisfaction with their neighbourhoods. That means putting resources closer to communities to deal with repairs and enhancements to local infrastructure - and it means spending on local parks and green spaces; deep cleans in our neighbourhoods where the pandemic has disrupted routine services. And because communities are about people, rather than just places, we're finding extra resources to help those most at risk of struggling with the rising cost of energy bills and support financial inclusion." >Green co-convenor Martha Wardrop said: "As well as confirming the funding to keep all local libraries open, it will also allocate more than £1 million to reopen community centres and public halls, and £650,000 to reopen the much-loved St Mungo's Museum and Provand's Lordship. Finally, in responding to the climate and nature emergencies, it will design a free public transport pilot, increase recycling investment, and create a wildflower action plan for the whole city." by youwhatwhat (Fri 18th Feb 2022 8:28am)

  • You're brave going to Costco on a weekend! I find it way too busy with folk blocking every aisle as they bumble aimlessly around - much more bearable on a weeknight I didn't realise it was as high as 68% but it doesn't surprise me. I just came back from a trip to the Mediterranean and it was quite stark how few large people I saw. I'm sure our drinking culture plays a pretty big part by youwhatwhat (Sun 11th Sep 2022 9:02am)

  • Pretty crap but in my experience tickets aren't checked so you'll get a journey for free. Got a free taxi trip between Dundee and Glasgow back in uni after a replacement bus didn't show up. Had to share it up to Perth where everyone but me got out. No complaints for me there! by youwhatwhat (Sun 30th Oct 2022 5:28pm)

  • Not driving myself but you could take the Flixbus to Preston (£13, leaving at 8:30 tomorrow) and an onward bus/train to Liverpool from there for £15 on the day or £8 if booked in advance? I walk by a Flixbus going south every time I go into the office so they seem reliable from my not so scientific analysis. by youwhatwhat (Mon 28th Nov 2022 10:28am)
  • I've looked into it in the past but it would be just under £20 for the two of us and a taxi is normally £25 - it's worth paying the extra £5 for far less hassle. by youwhatwhat (Mon 28th Nov 2022 11:33am)

  • How much more do they charge? by youwhatwhat (Mon 28th Nov 2022 12:14pm)
  • Given there's two of us and we'll both have heavy suitcases, I'd rather take the taxi in the first place. If they're going to charge through the nose or if I can't easily get one then I'd obviously take the bus. I'd happily pay a bit extra to avoid the trudge into and out of town lugging heavy suitcases around. by youwhatwhat (Mon 28th Nov 2022 12:17pm)

You've got Linn Park, Pollok Park and Queens Park right in your doorstep, great community, decent transport links, decent schools. Been in this area for nearly three years now and love it. by youwhatwhat (Thu 30th Mar 2023 1:14pm)

  • For a day trip, I really enjoyed doing a loop starting with the Dunoon Ferry, then stopping at Loch Fyne Oyster restaurant, a tour of Fyne Ales followed by a stop at the Rest and Be Thankful before heading along Loch Lomond to Glasgow. Did that with my partner's parents and they enjoyed it. by youwhatwhat (Tue 9th May 2023 8:48am)
  • Aye, easy to do if bins were actually taken frequently. Had a case recently where my green bin collection was missed one week and I was on holiday for the next so couldn't take it out. That was nearly 2 months between bin collections! Not much chance of closing the lid if it's full to the brim... No doubt the fuds in the council will be dropping it to monthly soon enough and will be wondering why the problem is getting worse by youwhatwhat (Wed 17th May 2023 8:38pm)

  • Had the same doing the Edinburgh half marathon a few weeks back. First train got into Waverly from anywhere was at 8.30am - 30 mins after the race started. 40,000 runners and not a single one of them could've arrived by train. So much for encouraging people out of cars. by youwhatwhat (Mon 19th Jun 2023 12:07pm)
  • Maintenance is a pish excuse - running it later for one night isn't going to break the whole system and it's hardly like this gig has been sprung on them. Plus they're able to run the subway later in the Christmas season too. I'm sure if it was absolutely necessary then they could just run the circle in one direction only. A solution would be possible but as usual with most public transport here, the will isn't there. by youwhatwhat (Sat 24th Jun 2023 9:41am)
  • Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that maintenance needs done and with the subway being 120+ years old it no doubt needs a lot of it. But surely someone, somewhere must've pointed out that there's 35k punters going to a gig at Bellahouston Park with a decent amount planning on taking the subway. If the will was there, I'm sure it would be possible with sufficient planning to run the subway later for just one extra night. by youwhatwhat (Sat 24th Jun 2023 10:07am)

  • I wouldn't necessarily be against that. It does surprise me that most museums here are free (not that I'm complaining!) but I wonder if charging non-locals or people living outside Scotland a small entry fee would be a good additional revenue stream to bolster national and local budgets. by youwhatwhat (Sun 13th Aug 2023 8:23pm)
  • My other half was keen to try there given we stay just round the corner. Won't be doing that now. Thanks for the heads up! by youwhatwhat (Mon 14th Aug 2023 11:31pm)
  • It's only a good thing if public transport is improved so that you tackle **why** people drive into the zone. Bus and rail services are getting worse - not better. My partner had to stump up over £40 for an Uber to the southside a few weeks ago because there were no trains, no buses and the queues for black cabs were endless. by youwhatwhat (Tue 15th Aug 2023 9:48pm)
  • Knowing GCC they'd somehow manage to run a bus service which is magnitudes worse than FirstBus. by youwhatwhat (Tue 15th Aug 2023 9:45pm)

  • You'd probably be fine walking it if you were with someone else but you'll be fine in an Uber / Taxi (if you can get one - black cabs especially are a nightmare to get atm). There are several buses that go down that way and you can track them on the FirstBus app if you get really stuck. by youwhatwhat (Wed 30th Aug 2023 9:45pm)
