  • Didn't know. Ended up getting a taxi and cost £20 anyway. As a bonus I got the desk right away and didnt have to wait for the delivery. by AncientSaladGod (Sat 15th Jun 2019 4:15pm)
  • Update on this, my desk did end up fitting in the cab, though just barely, and had to go in diagonally. Maximum length of something it can carry is probably 1.5 m. Driver also said he'd have charged me extra if I'd had any more. by AncientSaladGod (Sat 15th Jun 2019 4:22pm)

  • I've had Virgin, BT and TalkTalk. I've seen other comments shitting on TT's router but now they have a new one and speed seems to be consistent. Can't recommend BT. It kept cutting out and wouldn't let me reconnect until I rebooted the router. Virgin is the best but their service isn't available everywhere. Make sure to check that it is in your area. by AncientSaladGod (Mon 8th Jul 2019 10:53am)

  • I second others' recommendations for Balmaha. Train to Balloch and shuttle bus to Balmaha, then take the west highland way and walk north for less than an hour. Has some amazing sunsets over the isles of Loch Lomond. Alternatively, of you want sea, train to Wemyss bay and ferry to the Isle of Bute. by AncientSaladGod (Tue 23rd Jul 2019 7:29am)

  • There's also [this one](https://goo.gl/maps/xob2YU9YxekdgQor5) in Kelvingrove. Used to live opposite it. Now refitted as apartments. EDIT also [this one](https://goo.gl/maps/cG2iurs5DyLSoAKg7) on the opposite side of Kelvingrove, on the UoG campus. That one's still a functioning church. I'd be really curious to see how the interiors work. Both what the original churches looked like and how they repurposed them into flats. by AncientSaladGod (Thu 3rd Oct 2019 11:55am)

  • Oh man I've scraped the bottom of every barrel, not just spareroom but gumtree and other smaller sites like RoomGo and OpenRent. I have seen more places then I can remember but the ones that aren't dark basements where my head barely clear the roof have queues a dozen people long. My nuclear option is going back to university accommodation, which I'm in the process of applying for. by AncientSaladGod (Mon 21st Oct 2019 1:16pm)

  • I was never happy with the non-HMO thing and the whole clusterfuck the situation of the flat is. I tolerated it until the others up and told me to stop expecting them to accept the responsibilities that come with sharing a flat with someone that isn't exactly like you, or I'm out. by AncientSaladGod (Mon 21st Oct 2019 2:42pm)

  • I feel so many different ways about this. Having public infrastructure named after you is a great honourific. If we no longer honour the people the stuff was named after it should be fair enough to strip that honourific. At the same time this feels like painting over history, and kind of virtue signalling. You're going to rename the Mitchell Library to something else? Cool, but are you going to give £7 million to the descendents of Mitchell's slaves? Are you going to rename it after one of them? How does changing a name help mend the scar slavery left? This also goes beyond slavery. It is kind of about how we see people in the past. When you rename a library after someone you're not celebrating the number of slaves they had, you're celebrating the act of leaving their entire family estates to the city as opposed to your pals. Is it fair to condemn people for engaging in business practices that were not as condemned when they lived as they are today? I don't think there is an easy answer here. by AncientSaladGod (Sun 10th Nov 2019 3:08pm)
  • Huh, Id have thought the area would be more... Y know, wooded. by AncientSaladGod (Wed 20th Nov 2019 2:59pm)
  • I just moved and yeah it's absolutely grim. Quite like the flat though. It's the first warm flat I've lived in in 4 years. by AncientSaladGod (Sat 30th Nov 2019 12:23pm)
  • Here are your mistakes to avoid in the future: 1. Locking your bike up in the landing. Plenty of space in the bike racks in the garage. Also it's technically not allowed to keep em in the landing. Fire safety fascists n all. 2. Using a bike chain in a famously dodgy area. Get a £20 kryptonite U-lock if your bike is valued any higher than that. That said sorry for your loss. Hope you have better luck with your next vehicle? by AncientSaladGod (Sat 30th Nov 2019 12:28pm)
  • They're definitely more secure than the front basement. As far as I can tell the garage door is automatic, but there's a security office right beside it. I haven't seen any cameras on the racks specifically, but I haven't really checked. by AncientSaladGod (Sat 30th Nov 2019 2:49pm)
  • There's nothing but various asian/persian restaurants, warehouses amd construction works. It's also in the shade of the M8 bridge and the rail bridge going into Central. by AncientSaladGod (Sat 30th Nov 2019 2:51pm)

  • I don't know if it's the norm but I have moved every year for the past 5 years. Having the flexibility of being able to move at the end of the year without having to either lug a million pieces of furniture or leaving behind a ton of money's worth of stuff is nice. by AncientSaladGod (Thu 19th Dec 2019 9:01am)
  • If you're looking for transport convenience Luss and Balloch are where you want to stay. For interesting historical places I'd recommend Inveraray Castle. It's not on Loch Lomond but you can get there with a reasonably sort bus trip from Balloch or Luss. Catch the bus that goes north to Oban. Just make sure to ask the driver if he goes by Inveraray. Balloch castle is not much to look at. Just an old house with some frills. Wasn't even open to visits when I went there. The country park is very nice for a lochside picnic though. One of the islands in the Loch has wallabies on it, but I don't know if they let members of the public on it. If you're going to be in Luss check out Beinn Dubh. It's the squat hill overlooking the village and it gives you a stunning view over much of the loch. It's about 600 m tall. Depending on when you're going (recommend july or august) Luss is also a great spot for taking a dip into the Loch. Just don't go too far out if you're not a strong swimmer. The best view you can get around the Loch is Ben Lomond (you can see all the way north to Ben Nevis and south to Glasgow southside on a clear day), but getting there without a car kind of requires planning to stay the night at one of the lodges or campsites at its feet, otherwise you'll have to take the ferry to Rowardennan from Tarbet arriving at 10 and rush up and down the munro to get back to catch the ferry back at 16.15. by AncientSaladGod (Thu 19th Dec 2019 9:55am)
  • [Apparently the wallabies were brought there by a speedboat racer in the 40's, and just made themselves at home.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inchconnachan) by AncientSaladGod (Thu 19th Dec 2019 10:14am)
  • That road is straight bonkers. Was on a southbound coach from Oban and we met up with a giant truck full of gravel coming the other way in the narrowest bit of the A82. There must have been less than an inch between its rearview mirror and our windows. by AncientSaladGod (Tue 24th Dec 2019 9:39pm)
  • This is a bit late, but just for your personal Glasgow lore: The Uni of Glasgow opened in 1451 but not where it's currently at. The iconic Gilmorehill building is an 1870 construction. The original 1460 campus was on the west side of high street and was torn down to make room for a freight railway station. by AncientSaladGod (Tue 24th Dec 2019 9:35pm)

  • If you don't mind finding yourself somewhere with an unapologetic hipster vibe I can recommend Tchai Ovna. Tis a tea house in the west end. No booze or roaring fire, but more kinds tea than you will get to taste in a lifetime. Vegetarian. Feels very pleasant and chilled out. I'm not particularly into tea but I've taken every visitor I have ever gotten there and the feedback has been good. by AncientSaladGod (Fri 10th Jan 2020 2:01pm)

What I'm craving most right now is just going out in the countryside. Take my bike and go off to the west coast, or go for a hike in the southern highlands. • No it was definitely a seal. Way too big for an otter, fat, grey dotted with black, long nose and a pair of stubby rear fins. It floated about for a bit and then swam off downstream with a fish in its mouth. by AncientSaladGod (Mon 25th May 2020 12:59pm)

  • Go ahead and tear down every statue and monument in Kelvingrove park as well, wouldn't want to celebrate the suppressors of the Indian Mutiny. Also best get rid of half of those beautiful shrines and monuments in the necropolis, a fancy tombstone is not much different from a statue in purpose, and if the owner did not have the foresight of behaving according to the morality of 200 years in the future they definitely deserve to be unpersoned. by AncientSaladGod (Fri 12th Jun 2020 11:41pm)

  • I guess a better way to name those amounts would have been "the minimum amount of money at which you feel like more money wouldn't do anything to improve your life satisfaction" for the top range and "the minimum amount of money you'd need to be comfortable". Looking at what others have said I realized that the main thing I wasn't thinking about is family. £90k is maintain an entire family on a single income kind of money. Except in London i guess. If you're thinking at that level it makes sense that that's how much you need before more wouldn't make you much happier. by AncientSaladGod (Mon 10th Oct 2022 5:16pm)
