  • Yes! It was May/June1990 and I had just moved to Glasgow. I stayed in Cartha St, Shawlands and the White Cart was at the bottom of the street. We were the last tenement. By some miracle, our ground floor flat wasn't flooded, even though some further down were But the water did come halfway up our floor joists. As a result everything got very foosty and we had to move. What I remember most vividly is watching the TV at my in laws' and seeing firefighters rowing down the street. My recollection is that some work was done on the river near Pollock Park and now it's sorted. by EdBonobo (Wed 19th Aug 2020 12:08am)
  • Voltaire and Rousseau is one of my favourite places on earth. They've opted for the 'loose piling' filing system. You have to go mining in the stacks, and when they all fall over, the book left in your hand will be the one you just *have* to buy. Always. by EdBonobo (Fri 21st Aug 2020 10:17pm)

  • I stay in Clarkston. I've been assaulted three times here - over petty things like parking disputes. Never had a whiff of trouble when I stayed in Govanhill. by EdBonobo (Sat 22nd Aug 2020 4:11pm)

  • Second the Strawberry Garden, Forth St, Pollokshields - big supermarket for all your Desi food needs. But my favourite Asian shop is the smaller SuperAsia, nearby at Eglinton Toll. by EdBonobo (Tue 25th Aug 2020 1:28pm)

  • Pollokshields, Langside and Govanhill libraries are another one. Glasgow Life has said that losses of £12 million have forced them to change their 'operational model' As if libraries weren't already under threat. Libraries aren't a 'nice to have.' They provide vital services, not least for those having to jump through hoops for the DWP. by EdBonobo (Mon 31st Aug 2020 11:30am)

  • We had that in our flat in Keir St - built some time before 1870. In those days the labour for stenciling was cheaper than wallpaper. We covered it it over with lining paper, painted - and then recreated stenciling throughout the flat. We left one patch uncovered, for historical interest. We also had the 1871 census data, which we got through Pollokshields Heritage. Fascinating stuff e.g. names of the Highland servants who slept in the kitchen recesses. I'm sure Pollokshields Heritage would be interested and can tell you more. • Only a typical reddit curmudgeon would see a negative here. I flat out disagree that nobody really cares about climate change. More and more folk are waking up to the reality of the emergency and are looking for practical solutions. We're not there yet with cycling - but this is keeping it in the minds of a) potential cyclists and b) local and national government who will have to adapt cities to favour bikes over cars. If it were just a projection - fair dos. But this is just part of a pro-cycling groundswell. by EdBonobo (Wed 20th Oct 2021 12:13am)
  • And it's worth keeping cycling in the public eye with messaging like this to maintain pressure so that that the obstacles are removed. I fully agree that other things need *also* to be done. I just don't see how this projection detracts from them. You said it annoys you. It needn't. by EdBonobo (Wed 20th Oct 2021 11:09am)
  • No. Excellent, free, zero emissions public transport is part of the solution, not part of the problem - and there are many activist groups campaigning to keep you in a job. by EdBonobo (Wed 20th Oct 2021 11:18am)
  • Was it even aimed at persuading the drivers directly? I'm sure we're only in accidental disagreement here. I just couldn't fathom why this had annoyed you so. I see this kind of thing as having a dual purpose: a) to remind government that people want bikes and therefore safe cycling infrastructure and b) to give cheer to those already supportive of bikes and keep the energy up (see also demos). At the end of the day, it was only a projection. It was simple to do and didn't detract from other activism. More to be done? Absolutely. by EdBonobo (Wed 20th Oct 2021 12:24pm)

  • In Scotland it's actually illegal to stop a woman breastfeeding in public. That's maybe beside the point - what you really want is for nobody to tut or stare or hassle you. But when my wife was feeding, she found that in practice it was fine anywhere. by EdBonobo (Thu 28th Oct 2021 3:58pm)

  • I think it's a bit of a self-mythologising. People don't say 'cunt' half as much as these Reddit cunts make out. by EdBonobo (Sun 10th Jul 2022 3:05pm)
  • Oh I can imagine it in a boyish environment like that, especially during the heat of the game. But if you were to go by the redditors of r/glasgow and r/scotland, you'd think that 'cunt' was every other word, in normal discourse. Ain't so. Whereas 'fucking'... by EdBonobo (Sun 10th Jul 2022 3:54pm)
  • I was at Rufus Wainwright on Saturday. It's a brilliant venue on a warm summer's night. Bars - you have to by £3 tokens and it's £6 for a pint or £3 for a Coke (can't really complain - we were adding our own JD). Food looked decent, but didn't try it. No long queues for anything, including toilets. You might want a cushion. Enjoy! by EdBonobo (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 11:45am)

  • I had mine done at the Sandyford, years ago. It was done by a very nice visiting professor from India, who was a veteran of Mrs Gandhi's mass sterilisation programme, and who had developed an innovative, foolproof technique. All the Sandyford staff were eager to watch it - so I ended up showing my baws off to fifteen people at a time. by EdBonobo (Tue 4th Jul 2023 6:30pm)
