  • Just going to throw the beloved Philly (Philadelphia Fish & Chips) into the running. My dad often went for lunch when he was a kid and subsequently I fulfilled that same tradition as a student. A century of brammer scran never tasted so gid. by Fairbz_ (Mon 27th Dec 2021 11:09pm)
  • I took a PCR at Skypark on Thursday (23rd) and got emailed 34 hours later with results. Maybe worth calling the number they give you. by Fairbz_ (Mon 27th Dec 2021 11:03pm)

  • For gel extensions, I go to Rusea in Mount Florida every 4 weeks and I love it. It's unbelievably cheap and Masha the senior nail artist is amazing at intricate designs. I hate to be a pessimist but I found NAF! Salon a bit naf - pun intended. I started going there last year for acrylic extensions but I felt like the quality was pretty poor as my acrylics kept falling off in just under 3 weeks. This meant having to book around 2 appointments per month in advance, and the high demand meant availability was always at inconvenient times - on top of this, it's extortionate! I hate to be a skeptic but my theory is that it's intentionally not designed to last long to force you to make loads of appointments so that they can milk you to cover overhead rent costs for such a central location. You can only blame your nail growth rate up to a certain point and it just seems a bit too convenient for NAF! given that the only place that I've visited to get my nails done where my nails haven't lasted as long as 4 weeks is the most expensive place in Glasgow. I've also had a couple of issues in regards to booking in advance for a specific design before being told that the nail tech that I've been allocated is either not qualified to do that category of design despite having booked it in advance and stated such or that there isn't enough time between appointments to do such designs and offering a less time consuming alternative yet still charging me for the more intricate design I'd booked for. After about 6 months of continuous disappointment, I opted to go elsewhere and I tend to get far, far better service. I know this post makes me sound like a total Karen. I swear to god I don't tend to complain much at all, but it gets a little tiring when you're spending so much money and not getting the product that you asked for. TL;DR NAF! disappointed me one too many times, myself and my purse are far happier at Rusea. by Fairbz_ (Sun 6th Feb 2022 6:09pm)

  • Dreadlocks became a symbolic accompaniment to oppositional collective identities associated with the African liberation/Black Power movements. Its spread among African liberationists, womanists, radical artists of African descent reflects counterhegemonic politics. Before any political affiliation with having such fashion, dreads are simply what happens when hair is not cut, combed or brushed. It is therefore almost certain that some representatives of every tribe on Earth had dreads at some time. Even the Romans regarded the Celts as having 'hair like snakes' and were recorded to have lime-washed their hair. Dreadlocks aren't exclusive to one denomination due to their historical complexity. They can both be considered as an example of culturally contextualized everyday resistance in a contemporary aesthetic light or as a historical happenstance in another. \- 'Kuumba M., Ajanaku F., *Mobilization: An International Quarterly,* (1998), Dreadlocks: The Hair Aesthetics of Cultural Resistance and Collective Identity Formation' by Fairbz_ (Tue 8th Feb 2022 12:26pm)

  • I once saw a ~60 y/o lady vomit on a ~10 y/o child's head at the four corners when I was on my way to an exam at 8 am on a weekday morning. She was very clearly on something as she proceeded to wander off with sick running down her chin without even acknowledging what had happened, leaving a poor, bewildered father with a sick-sodden child to clean up. I was just grateful to have narrowly dodged the collateral splashes of chunder. by Fairbz_ (Thu 4th Aug 2022 11:46pm)
  • Not sure if it counts but I met Alan Cumming and his husband a few weeks ago at a swimming pool. He watched the expression on my face go from puzzled to realisation as I registered why I recognised him and subtly mentioned to my partner. He immediately left. I actually felt quite bad that it was presumably my recognition of him that caused him to leave, I'm not one to approach famous people, especially when they're in their speedo's. Once he took his swimming cap off on exiting the pool, more people recognised him. Poor guy was trying to have a relaxed swim with his husband and instead he was getting hounded by 50 y/o women for selfies in the changing rooms. I'd hate to be famous. by Fairbz_ (Sat 20th Aug 2022 10:57am)

  • I did this for a year and, much like everybody else on this thread, absolutely hated it. My overall quality of life and mood dropped. In theory, you think 'Oh, its only 45 minutes away'. But in practice, once you factor in means of travel from home to Queen St and Waverly to work and back again, it quickly builds up - and that's assuming you're travelling in optimal conditions. I could see why people would get sick of getting up in the small hours and not getting home until 7 - 8pm. It's physically and mentally draining. The final straw for me was when I got stuck on the train on the way to work due to a fault on the line for 3 hours. The following day I opted to go by car instead and got stuck in standstill traffic for 2.5 hours thanks to a crash at Harthill. Employers weren't willing to let me work in Glasgow in spite of having the resources to do so, resulting in me finding a better job in Glasgow. Somebody once told me that a survey was performed on 100 different 100 y/olds for life advice and the top piece of advice that came out of it was to try and live close to your workplace to minimise commuting. Thought that was really interesting. I bet all 100 of them did the GLA - EDI commute! by Fairbz_ (Mon 26th Sep 2022 7:31am)
  • 'Two n' coo' = milk and two sugars. 'dinnae fash yersel' = don't worry. 'yer arse is oot the windae' = you're talking rubbish. 'away and boil yer heid' = you're talking rubbish also. 'Gonnae have to do some jiggerypokery' = I'll have to reshuffle/reorganise [said object]. 'Cannae get oot the bit' = I can't do anything right. 'teaching yer granny how to suck eggs' = telling somebody something that they already know. 'Haneck' = unlucky (used solely as a word to express laughter at others misfortunes). 'a wis gettin' thrown aboot like a wet trackie' = I was getting moved forcefully around like a wet tracksuit jacket. Finally, a personal favourite of mine: 'av got hairy baws, no crystal wans' = I can't see into the future. by Fairbz_ (Sat 1st Oct 2022 12:30am)
