  • Rutherglen isnt really that much farther afield. The train from rutherglen takes ten minutes into town, 15 into the westend. Rutherglen is sound enough, main street is a bit grim mind you by Mickosthedickos (Wed 7th Sep 2022 7:35pm)

Main Street and around it are a bit rough, but a wee bit up stonelaw road/mill Street and it's sound. Overtoun park is just round the corner as well, and it's a cracking wee park. by Mickosthedickos (Tue 4th Oct 2022 2:53pm)

Lots of charity shops have limits on the amount of stuff you can give them these days though, but there's at least 5 or 6 on or near ruggy main street. by Mickosthedickos (Sat 8th Apr 2023 12:55pm)

  • Fuck up miseryguts by Mickosthedickos (Sun 9th Apr 2023 2:48pm)
  • You've got things entirely backwards im afraid. A) How will forcing landlords out of the rental market through taxation make prices fall. It will just make them either move out of the rental market, constraining supply and pushing prices up, and those that stay in the market will pass on taxes to tenants, pushing prices up. B) It isn't the construction of expensive houses that pushes prices up, it is the overall low level of construction of all houses that pushes all houses up. There's a reason why a 1 bedroom in woodlands road is double the price of a 1 bed in rutherglen. Higher demand. If we increase the supply of houses in areas of high demand (e.g. £1m flats in partick) that will help to push down prices. Honestly don't understand how you can think that building less houses will lead to lower prices by Mickosthedickos (Wed 26th Apr 2023 8:56pm)
  • Maybe to a certain extent, but owner occupation and renting or not purely substitutable goods. Many people want to rent, not buy, particularly in a place like the west end where you have large student and transient migrant populations. by Mickosthedickos (Thu 27th Apr 2023 8:21am)
  • I mean.....of course people would rather live in social housing that private rent. Its the same thing but massively cheaper. Yep, right enough there are lots of people who can't afford the deposit and need to rent. This is again a function of rising prices do to insufficient levels of house building. And yes, we could build lots more social housing to house everyone. But what is the function of social housing? People moving to the westend are hardly paupers. Why should the state be subsidising their housing costs? by Mickosthedickos (Thu 27th Apr 2023 8:49am)
  • C'mon man. Social housing most definitely is subsidised. RSL's receive on average a £70k grant per house built. [https://www.wheatley-group.com/\_\_data/assets/pdf\_file/0025/47581/English-and-Scottish-social-housing-update.pdf](https://www.wheatley-group.com/__data/assets/pdf_file/0025/47581/English-and-Scottish-social-housing-update.pdf) I totally disagree that it is the concept of private rent that is distorting costs. Housing is pretty competitive market (outside of RSLs obviously) and rents rise and fall based on supply and demand. This is fairly obvious when you compare house prices in the west end and East Ren to comparable properties in the east end/south side. The main issue is a lack of supply. You can see this on steroids in the south east of England. We are simply not building enough housing of all types which is pushing up prices. by Mickosthedickos (Thu 27th Apr 2023 9:17am)
  • Sounds like maybe the Eastern Necropolis on Gallowgate next to the Forge based on you saying it was east something. Could also be the Southern Necropolis in the Gorbals by Mickosthedickos (Thu 27th Apr 2023 11:07am)
  • How is the presence of private landlords restricting supply? A house is a house - only one household can live in a house. I mean, if anything the presence of private landlords increases supply as they provide house shares and split existing properties into multiple properties, etc. The presence of private landlords has no bearing on private or public sector developers from constructing new houses. by Mickosthedickos (Thu 27th Apr 2023 11:24am)

  • Just realised you are asking about street corn. I make it aw the time. It's great stuff. I use feta, but I do find it clumps after you make the first couple. I tend to make it as a salad. • Preeerrrach. The fact that east ren, bishopbriggs, rutherglen and cambuslang aren't part of Glasgow is ludicrous. Gets a bit fuzzier as you go west mind you. Is Clydebank part of Glasgow? Dunno. I think one of the major consequences of this is it paints Glasgow as much poorer and more deprived than it is in reality. If you cut out the most affluent areas of any city it's going to look worse. by Mickosthedickos (Sat 9th Sep 2023 10:44am)
  • Yeah, it's not in Glasgow now. But looking north, east and south, the natural boundaries are obvious. Looking west it isn't too clear.
