  • Most GPs are happy to see folk for sexual health, likely be a lot quicker. Fastest possible way might be to book a phone consult, explain your worries, and see if they advise an appointment from there. by PyrateNemo (Fri 31st Jan 2020 7:03pm)
  • Buses are still shite but you can pay with contactless now so obviously that alone is worth the price increases ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ by PyrateNemo (Fri 31st Jan 2020 7:01pm)

  • Is this Slay as in the promoter? They normally email the day of (normally just a few hours before!) to confirm venue, they’ve done this every time I’ve been to see the Boulet Brothers by PyrateNemo (Thu 13th Feb 2020 5:55pm)
  • “Consent also counts for witnesses/bystanders” seems to be treated like a fucking galaxy brain take by some members of kink communities and I just canny deal with it by PyrateNemo (Tue 18th Feb 2020 1:43pm)

  • I’m a vet nurse. I imagine it’s a bit like being a human nurse - you spend most days suffering emotional whiplash from one owner/patient to the next, and you wouldn’t recommend anyone gets into it but you’re pretty sure you like it?? by PyrateNemo (Wed 4th Mar 2020 4:51pm)
  • Bad Mum Bakery on Queen Margaret Drive is taking orders I believe, their stuff is banging by PyrateNemo (Thu 21st May 2020 1:44pm)
  • Glasgow Bike Hive are a wee indy workshop/storage in Hyndland-ish area - my partner uses them for maintenance for his current e-bike and is getting their help on building his own. A guy called James run it and he’s sound, really knows his stuff. Obvs not sure what the story is at the moment but 100% worth a try by PyrateNemo (Wed 24th Jun 2020 6:42pm)
  • Lived here 5 years and never had any issues, it’s a real mix of council/ex council housing and shockingly nice estates so you definitely get the full range of humanity. Wouldn’t say it’s any rougher than anywhere else, but jfc do people love their fireworks around here by PyrateNemo (Tue 28th Jul 2020 10:13pm)
  • Not certain, but Glasgow Bike Hive in Hyndland-ish area might be able to help! My partner orders bike parts from them all the time. Not sure what they’re up to at the moment, but the guy who runs it is lovely and always super helpful, well worth getting in touch. by PyrateNemo (Thu 13th Aug 2020 9:16pm)
  • The Zero Waste Market off of Duke Street is a banger for veggies and bread, and a shit ton of other food and household things without packaging if you’re looking to go down that road. Little pricier than the supermarkets but the veg is normally great quality and all locally grown, staff are lovely. They have lists of everything they have available on their facebook and insta by PyrateNemo (Mon 17th Aug 2020 12:22pm)

  • Fair warning, I don’t have the sources to back up anything I’m about to say bc my brain is Bad at cataloguing where I learn things, and also I’m fresh off work and have the brainpower of a fucking hamster right now: It feels like you’re right in that very few folk seem to recover, but it also seems like they’re not given much of a chance. The cycle of violence and poverty that seems to be the driving force behind most of the folk you see out and about is *hard* to break, and it doesn’t seem like anyone with any real cash or power to help is interested in doing so. Obviously not everyone wants helped, but it seems like even the folk who do struggle to access it, and I’m hesitant to write folk off for making the best of a cunt of a situation. The countries that seem to do best with these issues are the ones that put real money into it and really invest in the people they’re helping, so we must be missing the mark somewhere? Similar to the prison system in ???Denmark. The recidivism rate is orders of magnitude lower than here bc they really focus on rehab. Like sure, stop people from taking drugs via criminalisation/the prison system, but if you don’t fix what caused the problem in the first place then what have you achieved? What did you actually spend money on? by PyrateNemo (Tue 15th Sep 2020 8:12pm)
  • Greys yes as they’re an invasive species. I don’t think reds are classed as vermin. Maybe they would be if their numbers weren’t so bad? by PyrateNemo (Sat 17th Oct 2020 4:04pm)

  • My partner cycled to work in the Before Times and would go along the canal and kelvin walkway instead. He added time to his journey from anniesland to the city centre, but there were far fewer opportunities to be murdered by a bus. Obvs you then have to be the considerate one bc you’re the vehicle on a mixed-use path, but that’s not difficult if you’re not a cunt (looking at you, Edinburgh cyclists) by PyrateNemo (Sun 15th Nov 2020 10:54am)
  • The food’s always been fine from 333 but they tried to launch their own ordering app a while ago and it went...poorly. At one point we placed an order and the poor lass who answered to chase it up didn’t even know the app existed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ by PyrateNemo (Wed 18th Nov 2020 7:43pm)
  • Not my experience with Knightswood, but everyone is different! by PyrateNemo (Tue 24th Nov 2020 9:44pm)
  • I don’t often miss Edinburgh now that I’m here, but fuck me what I wouldn’t do to have Lothian Buses here. Hell, even Stagecoach would be better. First Bus really do just fulfil the minimum requirements of being a bus service, it’s horrendous. by PyrateNemo (Wed 25th Nov 2020 7:15pm)
  • This is the thought I keep having, along with all the sensible reasons why lockdown relaxation for xmas is a bad idea. Everyone else has had to have their high holy days and festivals cancelled and cut short and had orthodox rules temporarily suspended - what makes christians (and the rest of us who are culturally christian) so special? by PyrateNemo (Sat 19th Dec 2020 9:59pm)
  • If easter’s more important religiously and got cancelled, then why were the rules going to be bent for xmas? by PyrateNemo (Sun 20th Dec 2020 9:33pm)
  • Best Paw Forward is run by two ex-vet nurses who went on to specialise in behaviour, and I have friends who have highly recommended them. Calling yourself a dog trainer is something anyone can do so it’s worth doing lots of research before you commit, as not all of them actually know what they’re doing, and that can be especially dangerous if your wee one is already resource guarding as that is behaviour that can escalate if someone gives you wrong advice. Red flags to avoid include talking about ‘dominance’ or ‘pack leaders’ (both debunked myths about how dogs interact with us) and any suggestion of using water sprays/vibrating collars/shock collars (shockingly still legal), or training that seems to focus on punishing bad behaviour rather than redirecting and encouraging good behaviour (just like us, dogs learn more reliably when they’re treated for good things rather than punished for bad things). I would be worried that trainers who are repeating these myths maybe haven’t had any or any reputable training themselves in training. Edit: if you got your wee one from a rescue centre, then it might also be worth checking if they have behaviourists on staff to help you, I know that the SSPCA and Dogs Trust certainly both used to. by PyrateNemo (Mon 28th Dec 2020 2:01pm)
  • Aww wee darling, sounds like he’s landed on his feet with you! You’re right that just taking what he’s guarding without swapping it for something higher value will make it worse, if he’s an ex-racer then he potentially has never been able to have a meal without other greyhounds trying to muscle in - hopefully he learns soon that no-one is going to steal his food if he turns his back! If you don’t get anywhere with a trainer, then you can also get a referral to an APBC-registered behaviourist through your vet (and some behaviourists will accept a self-referral, though they should always ask your vet for his medical history to double-check that there’s no old injuries that could be causing some pain and making things worse). They’re much more expensive because of that extra level of expertise, but because it’s via your vet, some insurance companies will cover the costs. by PyrateNemo (Mon 28th Dec 2020 5:01pm)

  • Bellahouston Park is lovely and the wee outdoor velodrome/oval track is ideal for getting some proper cardio in, the area outside the transport museum is fab and there’s a bit of a circuit you can do from Partick train station along that cycle path, but there are a few week hills and one section right next to the road is awful on skates, so stick to to the museum until you’re comfortable on your toe stops. I have done the full loop up and over the bridge next to the distillery and it’s fine, but not the most sensible idea. There’s also a section of the clydeside path in town that’s nice - from the Crown Street bridge and back towards town away from the People’s Palace. It’s just a wee stretch of a couple of minutes but nice pavement and a few tiny hills that are ideal if you’re not used to outdoor skating yet. by PyrateNemo (Sun 31st Jan 2021 10:44pm)

  • I had a full cardiac referral consultation with blood pressure and ECG for less than that so it does seem like a lot? Suppose it depends on exactly what bloods are being run, if it’s anything beyond a basic biochemistry and haematology then it can get weirdly expensive. by PyrateNemo (Wed 14th Apr 2021 3:45pm)
  • I almost miss being canvassed by cunts like this, they get so upset when they realise they’re speaking to one of those gays they talk so much shite about 😂 by PyrateNemo (Wed 21st Apr 2021 2:01am)
  • If somewhere isn’t asking for ID when they reasonably should be, then maybe just double-check that the needle they’re sticking into you is actually new and sterile by PyrateNemo (Wed 21st Apr 2021 2:15am)
  • I entirely understand the rationale for why they’ve scheduled things the way they have, but same. I’m in a job that can’t be done from home and we legally have to be offering a service, but no jags beyond the age tiers same as everyone else. As I say, I understand there’s no way of distributing jags in a way that’s fair to absolutely everybody, but it’s frustrating! by PyrateNemo (Fri 14th May 2021 6:23pm)
  • The vulnerable are vaccinated and that’s grand...until we all keep mixing and a mutation pops up that the vaccine isn’t effective for. There’ll have been no point to any of this if that happens, we’ll be right back to where we started. Again. There’s not much point in not sticking it out a little longer and preventing that disaster imo. by PyrateNemo (Fri 14th May 2021 6:31pm)
  • Elaine did all of our animal behaviour and training lectures at uni and she’s a fantastic behaviourist. Very down to earth and straight talking in my experience, I loved her. I think you can self-refer to her, or you can contact your vet for them to refer you. Her fees may also be covered by your pet insurance if you have it, it’s worth checking. If you don’t go for Elaine, anyone accredited by the APBC (Association of Pet Behaviour Councillors) is a good shout - it’s as close to getting a ‘license’ to practice pet behaviour as you can get, you get what you pay for, and you can trust their advice. There will be very knowledgable dog trainers who would be able to help you too, but finding a reputable one who actually really knows their stuff is tricky because there is no regulation at all, so often it’s better to go straight for the experts. by PyrateNemo (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 11:32pm)
  • Maia Gifts on Bath Street might not be exactly what you’re looking for in handmade gifts, but it’s my go-to shop when I need a gift but I’m not sure exactly what to get by PyrateNemo (Sun 25th Jul 2021 12:24am)
  • Flamingo Fabrics is based in Dundee but are online too, they’re fab by PyrateNemo (Sun 1st Aug 2021 6:27pm)
  • The roller derby teams go through intake periods and it’s a great sport for getting fit! The Glasgow Roller Derby team is the womens team, and they compete internationally so train to a relatively high level. Mean City Roller Derby is a co-ed team (I train with them!) and don’t compete to such a high level so I’ve found them to be a bit more of a relaxed vibe. Both of them will fully teach you to skate before introducing contact, and they’re amazing teams for meeting a bunch of new folk! by PyrateNemo (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 8:44pm)
  • The only stock of cat vaccines in the UK at the minute are what vets have on hand, and there’s no word on when that might change, so it’s a bit of a mad scramble trying to allocate stock to the highest-risk patients (if they even still have stock!). Apparently this has been an issue for most of the last year in Europe, but we’ve been unaware of a looming problem until it hit, because the manufacturers didn’t think to tell us. Fingers crossed you find somewhere with spare stock that can sort you out! by PyrateNemo (Wed 10th Nov 2021 2:55pm)
  • Unfortunately the UK isn’t really worried about any diseases being imported except rabies, so it’s difficult information to find until you get here, and as you say, it’s too late once you’re here! It’s sort of pandemic-related- we’ve been told that it’s been a combo of covid isolation reducing factory output, a portion of factory output being turned over to producing covid vaccines, and a shortage of lorry drivers for distribution. There’s also not enough vets to go round for mostly pandemic reasons, so I’m afraid I’m not surprised that it took some doing to get an appointment, but I’m glad you got sorted!! by PyrateNemo (Wed 10th Nov 2021 9:05pm)
  • Same here! Hobbycraft is hard to get to for me so I’d love another option for when I’m in the mood to spend an unexpectedly free weekend stitching. There are a few local sellers of dyed aida/linen that would be fab to see in a shop too! by PyrateNemo (Sat 12th Feb 2022 1:58am)
  • Honestly, I just use Glasgow Taxis for everything and I don’t bother with private hire. I know they’re much more expensive (except during uber surge pricing), but I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience with them since I got here like 6 years ago, compared to the absolute shite of private hire. I’m also an introvert so having the divider is amazing, I can’t hear them well enough to have to have a proper chat. Side note: what makes city private hire so much worse then in the country? I grew up in Moray and all the taxis are basically decent. I’d never get a taxi over a cab if I can avoid it here or in Edinburgh! by PyrateNemo (Sat 12th Feb 2022 2:09am)
  • The Glasgow Taxis app actually does this. It’ll give you an optional quote that you can book. The tradeoff is that very occasionally it’s cheaper without it (eg coming back from the pub with no traffic), but it’s great for daytime trips. Doesn’t help you at the taxi rank of course though! Edit typo by PyrateNemo (Sat 12th Feb 2022 8:49am)

  • The Cinnamon Trust are a charity who offer foster and care services for the pets of chronically ill, disabled, and elderly people (so dogs walks for those who can’t manage themselves, or fostering when the person needs to spend time in hospital). They don’t have much reach in Scotland yet bc they din’t have many volunteers here yet, but they’re wonderful and well worth an email! by PyrateNemo (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 2:09am)
  • Off the top of my head, People Skate Glasgow have regular meetups (I see them on Instagram), the skate shop 5th Blocker Skates have once monthly George Square skates, and there’s always Rollerstop too by PyrateNemo (Fri 1st Apr 2022 8:08pm)
  • Some of them are 24hrs so might be the best bet. Just make sure you let someone trusted know where you are OP, and honestly consider just phoning someone trusted and seeing if you can crash at theirs. • TalkTalk haven’t been bad for the 7 years we’ve had them, only complaint is the out of contract price (tbh we forgot it ended so that’s on us!) Just moved to Zen for the new house. They’ll get the fancy fibre optic broadband by CityFibre eventually, and tbh I was impressed by their customer service at sign up. An actual ham person answered the phone on the third ring and everything. We’ll see how long it lasts! by PyrateNemo (Wed 3rd Aug 2022 7:49pm)
  • Surviving a pandemic is traumatic. Surviving a pandemic with worldwide news beamed straight to your eyeballs bc we didn’t have anything better to do and now being expected to just…go back to normal, with no discussion about how we’re doing or what we should be learning from surviving a pandemic is definitely traumatic. Our bodies/brains handled things the way they evolved to handle things, and it takes time to settle back down from panic stations when things still aren’t uhhhh great. We’ve all been through a lot. We’re all still going through a lot. Kindness to yourself is definitely warranted. by PyrateNemo (Sun 16th Oct 2022 1:32pm)

  • Leaving aside the numerous medical reasons why one would seek an abortion (since those are the only ones allowed by law in the UK), good. I would rather have a mother ready and able to support me than a mother forced to deal with me because she was forced to have me. It seems like the former would lead to happier children ans happier families, right? People aren’t forced to have pets they don’t want because we recognise that the pet would probably suffer - why can’t we see the same with children? A foetus is not necessarily less “valuable” but I don’t know what the right word is. A foetus is a ball of cells with the potential to be a person - a person already is. If you had to choose between saving a person or a ball of cells, why are the cells more valuable than a person who is already here? Would you really choose human tissue over a person? Maybe you would and maybe that’a not “wrong” per se, but as a uterus owner, I can’t abide being treated as less valuable than a ball of cells that can’t survive outside my body. Abortion is often a tragedy, but there are better ways to reduce it’s incidence than harassing women on their way to a medical appointment. by PyrateNemo (Wed 28th Dec 2022 4:40pm)

It’s way more convenient for us than the bridge will be for getting to renfrew when we’re not driving, the only issue is that it stops so early in the day so we can’t use it to get to the ice hockey etc. I can see us getting the ferry there and hoofing it across the bridge back after 6pm until it stops by PyrateNemo (Mon 19th Jun 2023 11:52am)
