  • I just moved from the US and have been surprised that nobody wears masks indoors. I think it’s because people follow government guidance much more closely over here. A word of warning though: COVID levels are currently Sky-high throughout Scotland. Edit: the current govt guidance is that masks aren’t required. by Snoo58499 (Fri 24th Jun 2022 10:19am)

  • It’s madness, we just paid 20% over home report in Milngavie. You’ve basically got to offer that much to get anything at the moment. If we’d had a choice we’d have waited till the crash, but we were fortunate to have a large deposit. I really sympathize with people who don’t, as getting a mortgage will be tricky when you’re paying that much over home report. by Snoo58499 (Sat 25th Jun 2022 8:45am)

  • Any evidence besides just a hunch? I’d guess covid put a lot of folks plans on hold for the last couple of years and we’re seeing people begin to move again. by Snoo58499 (Tue 19th Jul 2022 8:57am)
  • We had to bid 20% over home report which is the standard just now in the areas we were looking at (Newton Mearns, Clarkston, Giffnock, Milngavie, Bearsden). Even after this, this seller tried to nickel and dime us throughout the process, charging extra for things we’d included in our offer, so make sure you find out what’s included as early as possible and get a good solicitor. by Snoo58499 (Wed 20th Jul 2022 7:50am)
  • Fridge, tumble dryer, bathroom mirrors by Snoo58499 (Wed 20th Jul 2022 11:12am)
  • Yes, I paid a total of £505 extra. Unfortunately they refused to budge and it came so late in the process I had no choice but to pay. I wish I’d known from the start though, as I’d have had more options to seriously look at other houses. by Snoo58499 (Wed 20th Jul 2022 1:24pm)
  • Nothing was signed, they didn’t send an acceptance letter for weeks - they only verbally accepted through their solicitor. Learn from my mistakes! :P by Snoo58499 (Wed 20th Jul 2022 1:59pm)

  • You’re going to want a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if your face is a little puffy, you should put on an ice pack while doing your stomach crunches. After removing the ice pack you should use a deep-pore cleansing lotion. In the shower, use a water-activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. by Snoo58499 (Tue 9th Aug 2022 2:17pm)

  • Just moved to the area and tried to take the bus for the first time the other night. Took my wife and kids to go to Glasglow at the Botanics and waited 20 mins past the arrival time for the bus before giving up (after arriving 15 mins early). The kids were gutted they never got to go, and it was £60 down the drain for the event. by Snoo58499 (Sun 30th Oct 2022 7:02pm)

  • I moved here from NC in 2022 and can share my abbreviated thoughts - feel free to DM me if you have more questions: 1. As in America, there are areas where this is rife, and areas where you’ll never see a trace of it. 2. We were heavily focused on living in an area with great schools and focused on East Renfrewshire (Giffnock, Clarkston, Newton Mearns) and East Dunbartonshire (Bearsden, Milngavie) rather than Glasgow City. This may be unpopular on this sub, but it was important to us as it will make our house easier to sell if we suddenly end up needing to move back to the States. And we have kids, so it was important for that reason too. We ended up in Milngavie and it is perfect for us, happy to provide more details if you like. 3. There is a tendency to think prejudice barely exists in Scotland. I’m blind to most of it unfortunately but I would say Scots are generally progressive and welcoming, but there are also lots of dickheads here as in America. Do remember that unlike America, racist speech is a criminal offense here. by Snoo58499 (Fri 10th Feb 2023 3:31pm)

  • My company is a research firm which is sort of vaguely involved in management consulting. I think anyone could do my job with little training, I have zero technical qualifications and don’t feel I add much value to my company or the world but here I am making decent money while others suffer on paltry wages. • My 2009 Subaru isn’t allowed, I’m guessing because it’s a diesel 4x4. I can’t help but feel a bit resentful, I keep an older car because I want to be financially responsible and it feels like they’re penalizing people people who can’t afford a newer car. I don’t know the history of which body (ScotGov, GCC) introduced it but I don’t recall any public consultation. I don’t really get why I’m allowed in the west end but not the city centre. I’d have preferred a congestion charge for all vehicles, but I will admit that at least it encourages people like me to use public transport. by Snoo58499 (Sat 27th May 2023 10:25am)
  • Thanks for the tip, I do a lot of late nights into and out of the city centre when trains aren’t running so Duke street would work well for me if it’s outside the LEZ. by Snoo58499 (Sat 27th May 2023 11:14am)
  • I moved back to Scotland with my American kids last year. Day to day it’s been a nice place to live. People are kind and the access to public spaces/parks/walking paths etc has made it easier to live an active lifestyle. My kids school is brilliant and the weather doesn’t even bother me all that much. The thing that depresses me is that there seems to have been little economic growth since I left in 2009 and people seem generally fed up and helpless. I don’t have the answers, but when I was in the states there was a sense that you could become really prosperous without having to struggle all that much. Here it is the opposite, I’ve seen people on Reddit discussing what they think constitutes a “high” salary and it strikes me that good salaries are hard to come by here. by Snoo58499 (Tue 1st Aug 2023 6:06pm)

  • So you hate bigotry. Fair enough. I’ve met plenty Rangers fans who aren’t bigots though, they’re just in it for the football. I say that as someone who runs an Aberdeen supporters club. Ironically, tarring them all with the same brush smacks of prejudice. by Snoo58499 (Wed 9th Aug 2023 6:46pm)

  • I’m so sorry to everyone who is about to downvote me but here goes: a lot of 10-12 year olds find homosexuality to be nothing more than a joke and will most likely grow into adults who are much more respectful. I only say this because when I was a kid it was commonplace to use “gay” as an insult. And while I’d never ever have accosted a gay couple, I know plenty of kids who would have and who are now normal adult men who would be mortified by their childhood behaviour. by Snoo58499 (Wed 29th Nov 2023 3:16pm)
  • Glasgow airport has a special place in my heart for sentimental reasons but now as an adult who has travelled extensively I can see it for what it is. A regional airport sorely lacking in investment. The gate areas are virtually unchanged since I first flew in the early 90s (see BA gates with original 1990s BA typeface for gate numbers) and the only major upgrades have been for security and duty free. It’s all based on passenger demand but the lack of transatlantic connections since COVID is a government failure in my opinion. by Snoo58499 (Wed 6th Dec 2023 6:07pm)
  • Sounds pretty normal to be honest, most men only have 1-2 close friends. There’s a real loneliness epidemic among men past a certain age. It sounds like a cliche but trying to meet people based on common interests makes it easier.
