  • Aptly named, my mum said. 1968. by alanfleming (Tue 14th Dec 2021 8:20am)
  • So they basically implemented the worst thing possible from a customer point of view? Show you something accurate unless that’s not possible, in that case show you something that you can’t tell from real information- until the bus doesn’t show? That’s actively malicious. Is it just a FirstBus system (so expected!) or do the other companies use it too? by alanfleming (Wed 15th Dec 2021 8:27pm)
  • Concluded missives on a flat in the West End, moving next week! So glad to be moving back, it’s been a couple of decades away. by alanfleming (Tue 8th Feb 2022 11:45am)
  • Not in Glasgow (give me a week) but I’ve had their FTTC broadband here in Manchester for a couple of years. Rock solid and the price can’t be beat right now. They even give you a fixed IP if you need it and are prepared to ask for it over the phone. Gutted I can’t get it where I‘m moving to in Glasgow - the cabinet is full and I need to wait until someone cancels. Back to 11Mbps standard ADSL :( by alanfleming (Fri 11th Feb 2022 5:59pm)
  • Got to say though, that Indian call centre has either dropped my monthly bill (originally £15, now £7) or increased my data allowance (originally 1Gb, now 8) at renewal time each year for the past six years. That’s hard to beat. As was the absolutely free data roaming in a whole heap of places round the world, back in the past times. The coverage is a bit hit and miss in the city though, for sure. by alanfleming (Fri 11th Feb 2022 6:07pm)
  • There’s never been anything on the internet I’ve wanted that badly tbh :) by alanfleming (Fri 11th Feb 2022 8:30pm)
  • Can confirm. Just the standard, very transmissible, winter vomiting and / or shitting virus. You’ll get through it. We’ve not been used to them for a couple of years so our bodies are more susceptible to them right now. The flip side on the virus front: one influenza strain might have actually gone extinct because of isolation / distancing / masks: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41579-021-00642-4 by alanfleming (Fri 11th Feb 2022 8:40pm)
  • Or at the weekend. Thanks everybody! I got a knockback on my parking pass for Belmont today, because I couldn’t send them bills, or council tax, or rental agreement along with the V5. Not a surprise as I haven’t moved in yet! After a bit of discussion they accepted the missives for my new place as proof. Hopefully I won’t be bothering folks in the Wilton zone for long. by alanfleming (Tue 15th Feb 2022 6:22pm)
  • I really love the Winter Gardens. I remember it closure in the 90s and joy of its reopening. I really hope the city can find the money to re-seal the glazing and re-open it. In an ideal world a solution would be found that lasts more then 20-something years this time, but who knows if that’s even possible. by alanfleming (Wed 16th Feb 2022 4:50pm)
  • For arthritis my maw and a few of her friends swear by the arthritis compression gloves you get off Amazon. They have copper weave in them, and the compression and warmth through the copper really helps. by alanfleming (Tue 22nd Feb 2022 8:25pm)
  • Delmonicas and Polo Lounge next door are your stalwarts. The Polo Lounge has questionable door staff and is owned by a chain of some local reputation but that doesn’t stop the Twinks of course. I was there when those two opened so am a bit out of the target demographic now *cough* but supposedly they’re still the thing. There’s also Katie’s Bar and Underground on John St, and the Riding Room over on Virginia Street is your cabaret bar. Late night is AXM Glasgow on Glassford Street Speakeasy tends to be a bit older / not-twinky but has a good mix of everyone , and the Waterloo is definitely older but an institution - longest surviving gay bar in the city. There are others (I’ll do a full list once I find my feet here again) but this should do as a starter. Enjoy! by alanfleming (Wed 23rd Feb 2022 8:32am)
  • Not true. I’ve had my own companies for twenty years and not paid an accountant once for accounts to submit to Companies House. by alanfleming (Sat 12th Mar 2022 11:56am)
  • In Travel, is it worth mentioning that the Argyle line is out for weeks through the city centre? by alanfleming (Thu 17th Mar 2022 7:03am)
  • China Sea on Gordon Street. Decent Cantonese and it’s got a dragon on the ceiling and everything. They’ll love it. by alanfleming (Thu 17th Mar 2022 7:10am)
  • Morning folks! Can anyone recommend a plumber, West End if possible? My bathroom sink mixer tap is sulking. Mainly because I bought a replacement for it at the weekend I suppose. by alanfleming (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 7:18am)
  • Thanks- the work is a little more complicated than I’m making out, hence the shout for a professional. I’m happy to do basic DIY but equally happy to pay when something’s beyond my skill set :) by alanfleming (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 9:30am)
  • Thank you! Will give them a call by alanfleming (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 2:50pm)
  • OK big brain dump. Going for broad brush here. Firstly, apps on phones and devices. There’s Star Walk and at least one more that you can point your phone up at the sky - clouds, raining, light pollution or whatever - and it will tell you, and the wean - what’s up there. For the telescope itself - tbh anywhere in the city is going to be problematic as the background light pollution means it’s hard to see stuff against the background glow. The weather here isn’t much of a help either. But there are designated places nearby that are dark sky, and it might be a great weekend trip to go down to Galloway and have a really good look at the sky that you simply can’t see in or near the city. Though the app helps. For something directly related to Glasgow though? Well? Close by stars are still stars. Stone circles were designed to tell people back then about the turning of the seasons. And the sighhill stone circle is still the most recently created, astronomically correct stone circle in the UK at the very least. There used to be other local stuff going on. Paisley obvservatory? Something toing on at Glasgow? I’m years out of date here. But OMG, pointing an iPad at the sky, and saying *that* star, and having all the info to hand? I loved that. by alanfleming (Wed 23rd Mar 2022 11:07pm)
  • Apologies for the ramble - it was late and I was a little drunk! by alanfleming (Thu 24th Mar 2022 7:05am)
  • Yes they would- done exactly what you’re needing to do, myself. Ask one of the attendants at the site exactly where to put the stones- it varies from site to site. by alanfleming (Mon 28th Mar 2022 2:49pm)
  • Stones aren’t garden waste. That’s plants and so on. Stones are rubble, which is currently accepted at all of the recycling points. Mirrors and glass are also rubble. As are plates. At least they were at Dawsholm! by alanfleming (Mon 28th Mar 2022 3:59pm)
  • Oh god, they’ve started making it up as they go along! I was there the Sunday before after clearing out the front of my house. by alanfleming (Mon 28th Mar 2022 4:12pm)
  • I nearly posted a whole thing here on how to do the entire journey on public transport, getting off at Kelvinhall for the walk to the museum. Whoops hashtag old :) by alanfleming (Sun 10th Apr 2022 7:58pm)
  • Worked just fine for Manchester Airport. by alanfleming (Sat 16th Apr 2022 12:44pm)
  • Why not the Apple Store? Cost? by alanfleming (Fri 13th May 2022 7:55am)
  • I was told that is for two reasons : cheaper rates on the sites and to entice people to check the property out. I had to bid 19% over home valuation- not offers over price- for the one I really wanted. West End. by alanfleming (Sun 15th May 2022 6:14pm)
  • I’m Kelvinbridge so I dunno if on the same one as you, but my electricity is always in the 242-247V range- a bit spicy considering it’s supposed to be 230V and getting near the 253V limit. My UPS tells me and yes, it’s been calibrated. by alanfleming (Sat 18th Jun 2022 11:41pm)
  • Sorry to link to this shower but: https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-abandon-ship-bars-future-24282708 by alanfleming (Tue 21st Jun 2022 10:05pm)
  • Sorry to be that guy but hasn’t this sort of job always been more to do with who you know? And that always took a lot of hanging around / volunteering and so on until you got calls from people you’d helped out. Starting that process a while back might have been best, but starting it now (with pay the bills job) is next best. by alanfleming (Tue 21st Jun 2022 10:15pm)
  • Missed that! Thank you! by alanfleming (Mon 18th Jul 2022 7:29am)
  • Can’t do it myself cos of physical issues, hence the request for recommendations. And some of the work - flooring in particular, as well as doors, is a whole-flat job. by alanfleming (Thu 28th Jul 2022 8:32am)
  • I know what I need, but being new back to the city, I don’t know *who* I need - hence the call for recommendations PM was more for the herding cats. As you rightly point out there are a lot of moving parts here. Someone else to make sure they mesh together properly, and that the quality of work is up to scratch (having seen the mess done here by cowboys already) was my reasoning here. by alanfleming (Thu 28th Jul 2022 8:36am)
  • That’s very useful, thanks, I’ll follow up on that. A good joiner would round out my list of people- this sub helped me with a plumber earlier in the year, who was excellent. by alanfleming (Sat 30th Jul 2022 9:19am)
  • Late 1990s but good call thank you! by alanfleming (Sat 30th Jul 2022 9:17am)
  • Thanks for helping me get the names right. Told you I didn’t have much of a clue here except to identify what I need done :) by alanfleming (Sat 30th Jul 2022 9:20am)
  • Oh I wouldn’t go that far lol by alanfleming (Sat 30th Jul 2022 12:36pm)
  • A prominent camera might be another idea, as an addition, as someone’s bound to back into the gates anyway. by alanfleming (Tue 2nd Aug 2022 10:39pm)
  • Up until maybe 5 years ago it was a starter. If you go back 30 years they had reindeer as a main course. No joke. Made it awkward at Xmas though. by alanfleming (Tue 9th Aug 2022 8:33am)
  • Cottonrake Bakery on GWR still has a card-only sign up in the window. by alanfleming (Mon 3rd Oct 2022 1:39pm)
  • One other factor is whether you have checked baggage or not. I give it the full two hours, maybe 2h15 if I do, and 90 mins if I don’t. But I don’t want a coffee or anything, I’m a straight to the gate and wait sorta guy. by alanfleming (Wed 26th Oct 2022 1:35pm)
  • Obligatory “I never knew the place could hold that many!” post. by alanfleming (Sun 6th Nov 2022 9:38pm)
  • I got a recommendation for Knightswood Plumbers (07949 601572) from here some time back and they were good replacing a tap for me. Came when they said they would and were not expensive. by alanfleming (Sat 19th Nov 2022 12:37pm)
  • Apple Maps too, which suggests the best people to ask is SPT as they’re the likely cause of the issue when more than one is missing. by alanfleming (Sat 14th Jan 2023 9:01am)
  • Me too. Early Mid December was fine but it’s broken down again due to the Xmas and New Year Break. It will sort itself out again. To be honest Xmas period has been messed up wherever I’ve lived in a city. London and Manchester were no better this time of year. My general waste lift in week 1 didn’t happen at all. Week 2’s general and recycling were 2 working days late, pushing them into week 3. We’ll see what happens later this week. by alanfleming (Wed 18th Jan 2023 9:43am)
  • People were saying exactly that about the West End when I was a student here 30 years back! Nothing ever changes :) by alanfleming (Fri 20th Jan 2023 2:29pm)
  • Don’t blame the council for that. That was the Tory government’s Transport Act in 1985, and it’s not possible to reverse it as it’s a reserved matter by alanfleming (Sat 21st Jan 2023 10:01am)
  • There are returns to the Airport too. £14 I think. by alanfleming (Sat 21st Jan 2023 10:08am)
  • Also old fucker replies: bit of both, bit of both :) by alanfleming (Sat 21st Jan 2023 10:13am)
  • Remember also that London was specifically protected from the worst of deregulation imposed elsewhere by the Tory Transport Act 1985. And since Transport is a reserved matter the options for the Scottish Government and the councils are v limited. by alanfleming (Sat 21st Jan 2023 10:11am)
  • As I understand it (someone who has researched this may help more) similarly excepted for the same reason by alanfleming (Sat 21st Jan 2023 11:32pm)
  • Do you have a postal vote? I never got a citation until I went back to in present voting. by alanfleming (Fri 27th Jan 2023 7:57am)
  • If you’ve actually served on a jury in the past 5 years, tell them that and you’re excused. by alanfleming (Fri 27th Jan 2023 7:56am)
  • There is a hell of a lot of waiting. Make sure you have a game or Kindle or something on your phone. by alanfleming (Fri 27th Jan 2023 8:00am)
  • Dark Sky replacement might not be too hard as [pirate weather](Https://pirateweather.net) is supposed to be API identical except for the domain, and free. by alanfleming (Fri 27th Jan 2023 1:53pm)
  • Don’t get automatic lessons, as you will only get a licence to drive automatics if you do that and pass your test in one. If you change your mind you’ll have to go do it all again. Why pay for all that twice? Pass in a manual now and then it’s your own choice what you drive in the future. by alanfleming (Sun 29th Jan 2023 10:30am)
  • Charcoal Grey for a single suit - good for all occasions and accessorises very easily. After that, try stuff and see what you like, but a good charcoal grey single breast with well fitting trousers- not too long or short- will suit you forever. by alanfleming (Wed 1st Feb 2023 11:28pm)
  • And in Manchester. by alanfleming (Tue 7th Feb 2023 2:27pm)
  • The Lobey Dosser was weak because of a) a design flaw and b) people sitting on him for photies, not scrap. by alanfleming (Tue 7th Feb 2023 2:26pm)
  • Don’t forget Partick Thistle! :) by alanfleming (Wed 1st Mar 2023 7:24am)
  • That’s fighting talk! :) by alanfleming (Sat 4th Mar 2023 12:25pm)
  • Yup, when I moved last Feb my cab was full. I signed up for basic no-contract ADSL (with NowTV) and kept an eye on availability on the various checkers until I could place an order. Why stick with FTTC you might ask? I’m not a gamer and even with two of us and a houseful of connected stuff, my own decent router plus Vodafone’s 80Mbps for £19 a month (including free static IP if you ask) can’t be beat. by alanfleming (Wed 15th Mar 2023 1:02pm)
  • Sorry, meant polyurethane. by alanfleming (Tue 4th Apr 2023 11:14pm)
  • As a temporary fix until you actually get them sorted, go into Settings - Accessibility - Audio/Visual and play about with the Balance till it sounds right to you. Also, might not be the AirPods, your ears might be getting old. That’s happening here unfortunately. by alanfleming (Thu 6th Apr 2023 9:47am)
  • Was awful when I left Glasgow 30 years ago, was still awful when I came back last year. And they’ve spawned more, too, damn it. by alanfleming (Wed 24th May 2023 6:14pm)
