  • That’s not going to happen. Like others have said, its not exactly considered long-term income. My stipend is the most money I’ve ever earned and would cover a mortgage easily - but its over after three years (an extension is far from guaranteed). You’ll be stuck renting until your glorious stem job begins. by bagavadskeeter (Mon 18th Apr 2022 6:13pm)

  • I used to stay in Hamilton - plenty of Indian and Chinese places, takeaways and wee cafes will pay you cash in hand. Sorry to hear of your troubles pal. Also worth looking into getting that card that lets you labour on work sites. Costs a wee bit but opens more doors for you! by bagavadskeeter (Sat 23rd Apr 2022 4:48pm)

  • OP, this comment is a great example of Glasgow derangement syndrome, a common neuroses amongst non-Glaswegians but people from Edinburgh seem particularly vulnerable to it. Truth is, Glasgow is a great city with a lot of problems. The one doesn't negate the other. It has the best nightlife in Scotland, though falls behind Edinburgh and other cities in terms of cultural institutions, architecture and natural beauty. Its both the biggest and the poorest city in Scotland. Oh and the people are much friendlier than anywhere else, particularly those stuck up people from Edinburgh. by bagavadskeeter (Mon 25th Apr 2022 8:57pm)
  • In my experience, Glaswegians are pretty friendly but not more so than your average Scot. Plenty of dour bastards in this country, but I think most people here are sociable and up for a laugh. I can't remember who said it, but a comedian had a bit where he said that whilst most Glaswegians are both outgoing and friendly, there's a type who are outgoing but extremely unfriendly. You tend to run into these people on the bus quite frequently. by bagavadskeeter (Mon 25th Apr 2022 9:14pm)

  • Not true at all. North Lanarkshire and North Ayrshire were both well received administrations before the election. Just cynical to think that local government will always be shit, lets the politicians off the hook by bagavadskeeter (Tue 17th May 2022 4:34pm)
  • I didn't know about this, why did they take them away? Manpower issues? Seems that bins might be the exception - idk if any council is able to get them right by bagavadskeeter (Tue 17th May 2022 7:33pm)
  • Sorry to hear you're struggling pal, but good on you for making it a week. I wish I could do more for you, but I've heard that Kratom helps with opiate withdrawals as it works on the same receptors in the brain and produces a similar, but weaker, high with a much reduced possibility for addiction. I'd do your own research on it first and admittedly its not a quick solution as you'll need to wait for it to be delivered, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. by bagavadskeeter (Sun 22nd May 2022 6:13pm)
  • Bute is cracking - did you visit Mount Stewart? Its a beautiful big Victorian gothic house with an Italian chapel chiselled almost completely from one massive piece of marble. It was the highlight of my trip. by bagavadskeeter (Thu 7th Jul 2022 10:32pm)
  • The grounds were lovely themselves to be fair, it was raining on and off so we didn't get to explore them for too long but that wee beach sounds ideal by bagavadskeeter (Thu 7th Jul 2022 10:44pm)
  • Cause then they'd had to come down on all the other shithole pubs, restaurants and cafes taking massive liberties with their staff or letting building and health standards go to shit and they don't want to fuck with their tax base by bagavadskeeter (Tue 12th Jul 2022 8:39pm)
  • No you’re right to ask! Its not a registered charity, just a local project but you can find the guy who runs it on twitter here: twitter.com/gavin_f_brewis. He’s well known in the Southside, currently also running DJ courses for kids in Govanhill and I can vouch for him through involvement in Living Rent. But by all means if you’re not comfortable donating, that’s understandable. by bagavadskeeter (Sat 30th Jul 2022 7:25pm)
  • Sadly that comes with a lot of stigma, kids are ruthless enough about being different without being the only ones not wearing a school uniform. Not to mention the hassle you’ll get from teachers. For a lot of poor kids who might already be experiencing these things, its not exactly a solution. by bagavadskeeter (Sat 30th Jul 2022 7:32pm)
  • Guys, thank you so much for donating - in literally two hours you've helped Gavin meet his target and [made the poor bastard greet.](https://twitter.com/Gavin_F_Brewis/status/1553442341985423363) by bagavadskeeter (Sat 30th Jul 2022 7:41pm)

  • These were certainly not the "last of the city's slums", in fact this photograph series was taken prior to the city's first-ever slum-clearance scheme to gather evidence of the worst conditions. by bagavadskeeter (Mon 24th Apr 2023 12:52pm)
  • The vast majority of the Gorbals tenements are gone now, swept away in the regeneration boom in the post-war years. However, if you know which tenement your Dad lived in, or if he was cleared to a council house elsewhere in Glasgow/the West then you could have a look at the valuation rolls and other documents in the Mitchell Library. Sadly only some of the vast City Archives have been digitised, so you'd need to get in contact with the Mitchell and plan a trip up to search. Good luck on your search. I'm also looking for information about a figure in my family's past with little luck so I know your struggle. Must be much more strongly felt as its your Da. by bagavadskeeter (Thu 18th May 2023 2:37pm)

  • St. Andrews in the Square is great wee hidden gem - definitely check that out. Probably some of the best Georgian-era architecture in the city. The area between Candleriggs and Glassford Street has some of Glasgow's best Georgian Architecture, too. The GoMA, the Ramshorn Kirk and the Sloans building are all also Georgian. So are many of the buildings on union street - remnants of the old Grahamston section of the city which was demolished to build the central station. Otherwise, a lot of the "older" buildings in the city centre, besides the Provands Lordship and the Cathedral, are all Victorian-built. Its all very beautiful and ornate, if not kept in the best conditions off of the main drags (and even on them tbh). The West End is also gorgeous architecturally. by bagavadskeeter (Fri 2nd Jun 2023 1:35pm)
  • I do it when its one of those £10+ burgers that come with an excess of toppings. Hate the feeling of having sticky hands by bagavadskeeter (Thu 22nd Jun 2023 10:30pm)
  • Not always as simple as that unfortunately. It was hard enough finding openings with when the economy wasn't in complete free fall. Even when if do find one, its often you against sometimes over a hundred applicants. Plus, the new job - if its in hospitality - will also likely be paying minimum wage as its endemic in the sector. Not to mention that unemployment benefits haven't moved since they were slashed down to £70 a week more than ten years ago. Its better to stay and fight. by bagavadskeeter (Tue 27th Jun 2023 7:06pm)
  • This is why their resistance to the strikes has been so strong - the current university set-up is incredibly lucrative for those at the top. McDonald doesn't give two shits that history students are being marked by scabbing non-historians, or that the same situation is occurring across different subject areas. Its men like McDonald who are at the heart of the brain drain in this country - why exist on 6-month temp contracts for 10+ years in the UK when you can go abroad for an instance boost to income and conditions, plus a proper track toward tenure? by bagavadskeeter (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 12:07pm)
  • Its alright for some! My Gran used to be a jannie at a University and by the time she retired, her team had been slashed to a quarter of its original number due to fire-and-rehire policies. Pay-rises happened, but were below inflation. A lot of her younger colleagues were also agency staff. by bagavadskeeter (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 2:07pm)
  • I'm a current post-grad, from a working-class family and all I can say is that I've been extremely lucky. I was able to secure a discount for my Masters' fees (which I still had to borrow some money to cover completely) but I was forced to give up my flat and move back home to an overcrowded house to finish my degree - I just couldn't work and do my coursework at the same time. If I hadn't secured PhD funding then I wouldn't be here sitting one. My fellow students from WC families are all fucked in one way or another - housing issues are especially prominent, but there's also a sense that a future in academia, the reason we all chose the path that we're one, is increasingly remote. More than likely we'll end up with decent jobs, but only so many of us will actually get to do what we've trained to do due to a lack of places, shit conditions and a lack of financial assets to fall back on when there's no work. I do have colleagues who are clearly better off and can rely on generational wealth and connections - I don't resent them, but there is certainly a gap there. I would say the posho's who are only there to get a degree because its expected of them usually fuck off after undergrad. They've neither the talent nor the will to study their subject area in-depth. Dealing with them at undergrad really sucked though! by bagavadskeeter (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 3:09pm)
  • Good luck to you, it’s definitely not an easy feat completing one degree nevermind three and whether or not you end up doing what you’ve set out to do in your field - no one can take that away from you. Not only that but you’ve managed it with all those hurdles in front of you. You can take pride in that! Thats a great tip about the counselling service - I used it during my undergrad and it worked wonders for me. On your point about competitive colleagues, I’ve been lucky in that my department seems relatively free of nasty people. However I’ve heard horror stories from other ECRs in other unis about their colleagues. Some going as low as to steal work from the newbies to make themselves look good. Scumbags! by bagavadskeeter (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 4:42pm)

  • Cheers brother! I've managed to find a decent wee group of working-class academics that I regularly socialise with. Things are changing, I'd say. Slowly but surely. All the best to you too. by bagavadskeeter (Mon 3rd Jul 2023 6:22pm)
  • According to the [St Enoch masterplan](https://www.scottishconstructionnow.com/articles/in-pictures-first-look-st-enoch-centre-masterplan) its one of many buildings, including the shops in the foreground of your picture, that will eventually be demolished and replaced. by bagavadskeeter (Tue 10th Oct 2023 2:13pm)
  • Check for history seminars put on by the unis, they will have a programme of them going monthly until May next year. They're free, they're open to the public and they're usually both in-person and broadcast over zoom. Scottish Oral History Centre and the Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare at Strathy will be running theirs, for example. by bagavadskeeter (Sat 14th Oct 2023 8:11pm)
