  • great suggestions, thanks. We've got a Mackintosh walk booked but hadn't considered Kelvingrove art gallery, which is definitely added to the list. Any pubs you could recommend for an older grumpy east-end Londoner who's looking to see the 'real' side of Glasgow? Not me, but a family member... by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 6:37pm)
  • We're staying in Merchant city so north of the river but that bakery looks perfect so I'll definitely check it out if we go that way, thanks by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 6:42pm)
  • Looks good, thanks by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 6:41pm)
  • amazing, thanks for all the advice. Will be sure to check out Red Onion that's for sure. As I'm sure you know, it can be tricky finding places that are *actually* gluten free as contamination is a tricky bugger, (at least, that's been my experience sadly wherever I've visited in England) so getting an experienced opinion is invaluable. Cheers by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 6:51pm)
  • Sadly may be a bit out of our way but it's good to know it's there if we do go down that way, cheers by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 7:19pm)
  • In terms of 'realness', I guess it'd be the old man pubs. 'In touch with the real man', that kind of thing. Personally I'll be very interested in checking out Sloans and Babbity Bowster, but also got to keep the old man happy ;) by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 7:16pm)
  • Ah didn't see that thread when I searched (thanks reddit search function). Yup, have got the membership but always found it useful to ask local's advice if possible. (In my experience, lots of great places are safe but not necessarily accredited. It just depends on whether the chefs truly understand and appreciate the problem and can effectively avoid cross-contamination or not. If I stuck to only accredited places, I wouldn't have tried some really decent restaurants and would have missed out on some amazing food.) by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 7:43pm)
  • > Not many places you can find a GF Chinese. Sadly right :( Lychee looks great mind, cheers by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 8:03pm)
  • Yeah, I'll admit I sometimes risk it more as the - gut wrenching - pain only lasts a few days to a week with me[1], although I know I'm very likely doing myself serious damage in the long run. ([1]contamination dependent - obviously eating an entire wheat pizza would probably kill me for the month...) I appreciate your frustration though. Even though I've found most places that are on top of it are usually good 99% of the time, I had to scratch one of my favourite restaurants off my list earlier this month after I got glutened there. I'd being going there for months too, so it was a real surprise and a real shame... Thanks & hope you find some accommodating places by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 8:23pm)
  • Perfect, it's gone on the list! by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 9:19pm)
  • > If you’re wanting to ‘live like a local’ would highly recommend brunch there and there’s plenty of pubs for your dad. (Personal favourite the Allison Arms) so I can do a bit of retail while he gets pissed with the locals, perfect..! by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 9:15pm)
  • oh do tell.. Dakhin is on the list if that's one of them? but other options gladly appreciated ;) by elsebet (Mon 20th Sep 2021 9:21pm)
  • Thanks, I'll definitely try to check out the Steamie for the cake. I'd hate to miss out on traditional Scottish shortbread because I have a stomach that can't stomach it (excuse the pun). We'll be going that way anyway for the museums & art galleries so I'll try to pop by. by elsebet (Tue 21st Sep 2021 2:55pm)
  • We'll definitely be going west at some point for the museums & art galleries. Sadly looks like Hanoi Bike Shop is closed until October now (otherwise we definitely would've given it a go), so good to know there are a few other GF options that end of town. by elsebet (Tue 21st Sep 2021 3:00pm)
  • If it's any consolation, London is also notoriously bad (at least where I live). Quite a few places offer gluten free but don't do anything to prevent contamination. One restaurant confidently recommended me a meal because 'it's really low in gluten, I'm sure it'll be fine.' Not to sound too poncy, but when I stayed in NYC pre-pandemic, tonnes of restaurants offered contamination free GF options. You paid a surcharge of $1-2 for the extra effort involved, which I didn't have a problem with at all. Wish the UK could adopt this practice, but seems many restaurants don't really give much of a toss about allergies/auto-immune issues tbh. by elsebet (Tue 21st Sep 2021 3:07pm)
  • Thank you! Even if others have already mentioned it, it’s very reassuring to have another GF person vouch. Hope very much to get to riverside museum but already finding we’re running out of time :) by elsebet (Thu 23rd Sep 2021 5:01pm)
