  • Done-zo! Good luck (and brilliant idea to post on here)! by hilaryflammond (Sat 29th Feb 2020 6:31am)
  • Just chiming in to clarify (as a Glaswegian now living in Canada) that in Glasgow "Asian" generally = Indian/Pakistani. In the US/Canada, "Asian" usually means Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Taiwanese etc. Took me a while to understand this. by hilaryflammond (Wed 4th Mar 2020 3:50am)
  • Remember a guy called Mr Bones from kids' parties in the 80s. Vague memories of a Punch and Judy show. Haven't thought about him in years. by hilaryflammond (Sun 7th Jun 2020 4:56am)
  • Honestly, this was my biggest question about your post. Skateboarding? On those pavements? As a kid I used to go out on my roller skates and nearly kill myself on the steep hills and crazy paving. I only tried skateboarding once and it didn't go well. Sorry to hear you're getting abuse from the overgrown neds. by hilaryflammond (Fri 31st Jul 2020 1:59am)
  • That's amazing - I wish I had had the fortitude to insist on these sorts of things earlier in my marriage. I'm just back from a ten day trip to visit family where I lived in a flat on my own and it was incredible. I stayed up to 2am just to enjoy the solitude. Took me right back to when I was newly independent, living in my own tiny little flat after uni. I've done solo cinema trips before but it's always a tough negotiation with my dear spouse who thinks that every experience is better if you have someone else with you ("Noooooooo, it's not," Yours sincerely, All Introverts). Now I need to work out a nice way of saying "I want to do more solo trips". by hilaryflammond (Mon 11th Oct 2021 8:33pm)
  • Absolutely would recommend. I did the opposite thing - born and bred in Glasgow, did my degree there but went to Virginia to study for a couple of months near the end. The difference in culture was intense and eye opening and the racism was part of the fabric of the place (I'm white so can't speak to what it would be like to be black in Glasgow, but I can tell you I was very aware of a big social divide in Virginia that was entirely new to me, outside of the Rangers/Celtic thing). I'd never been anywhere else either and it was great to be somewhere so different. Now live in Canada and I'm convinced if I hadn't got out my comfort zone at that time in my life I'd never have had the guts to live abroad later on. by hilaryflammond (Wed 9th Aug 2023 8:11pm)
