  • Thing is, actually your opinion of what they're doing is irrelevant. My opinion is irrelevant. We're the dinosaurs here (I'm 44). I saw hundreds and hundreds of school kids marching for something that they believe in today. They don't need our permission to do so, or to rebel. They're the ones that will make the change happen, because we've fucked up and not done it. Oh, and stick your car up your arse you cockwomble. by hox113 (Fri 20th Sep 2019 2:00pm)
  • Every movement starts somewhere, usual with the young. Pretty soon the council won't let you drive your old diesel car in town anyway, so stick it in your drive ya lavvy heided wankstain. by hox113 (Sat 21st Sep 2019 7:14pm)

  • Hey, depending on your friend’s residency status (migrant, refugee, leave to remain, uk citizen) it’s likely they’re entitled to free ESOL education. Generally the first step is to get a language test to ascertain their level. They may have already done that as you think they’re at pre-intermediate level? If they have done so they should have a yellow (likely handwritten) certificate. If they haven’t done so getting tested in these times of Covid might be a bit challenging. GCC libraries run basic courses and testing (new arrivals to Scotland are often directed there first before accessing college), maybe contact the Mitchell Library and ask to speak to their ESOL team? The Nan MacKay Hall and Kinning Park Complex may also be able to help. There are a number of other places too. Once they’ve got their certificate they need to get their name on the Glasgow ESOL register - http://www.learnesolglasgow.com/glasgow-esol-register.html# This register is the centralised point from which ESOL places at one of the three Glasgow colleges are allocated (City of Glasgow, Glasgow Clyde College and Kelvin College). Do this very soon as term starts soon and places fill up very quickly. Worth noting that classes also often start in January, so if they don’t get in now start looking for another place at the end of November. You may find that your friend can get on the register before being tested, worth a look before trying to find a test. Once they’ve got a place in college they’ll be entitled to a term time bus pass, and free childcare if required, dependent on their residential status. They colleges are full of hard working people who genuinely want to help people learn, but sometimes it can be a bit challenging to speak to the right person. Be persistent, especially in these difficult times. Best of luck to your friend. The ESOL journey can be a long one, but can lead onto opportunity and finding new communities. Source: I used to work admin for ESOL in one of the Glasgow colleges. Note, it’s been a while since I worked there, I hope my info is still relevant and is helpful. by hox113 (Sun 6th Sep 2020 9:21am)
  • I'm so sorry Sean, that's a really tough way to find out about your friend. I'm willing to bet that he enjoyed the madness you guys got up together as much as you did, and that he felt lucky to have you as a friend. I'm glad that reddit helped you to get some resolution (thank you kind redditors). Have an amazing wedding and pour one out for your pal. by hox113 (Wed 11th Nov 2020 8:32am)

  • Slippy wet grass on a slight slope. One foot went one direction, the other went the other, and my ankle tried for a third direction. I heard it pop...🤢🤮 by hox113 (Sat 12th Jun 2021 10:23pm)
  • Sorry pal, that's brutal. by hox113 (Sat 12th Jun 2021 10:48pm)

  • That's very annoying, sorry she was a bitch to you. Did they give you the website address for missing appointments? It was really useful when I used it. Let me know if not and I'll try to find it for you. by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 8:34am)
  • Thanks u/Alalapupulala! I hope you recovered fully and managed to get back on the hill. I canny imagine how painful it must've been being stuck on the side of a hill with a break... by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 10:28am)
  • Hah! Yep, screw you wet grass! 🤣 by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 10:27am)
  • So, this was u/Zenon-Czosnek 's experience, you canny write it off because what they say makes you cross. No system is infallible, and if we fall into the trap of thinking the NHS is perfect the cracks will start to show. It's maybe too political for some, but I think the way the SNHS has managed repeated funding cuts from central government has been amazing, but a drop in service is still a result. I'm hoping that we'll get the opportunity to properly fund the SNHS, and at the same time learn from health services like the Polish one who are doing things right... by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 10:25am)
  • I was thinking a bit more on this last night, and I think you're right to a certain extent. I was very lucky in the staff who took care of me - the bone Dr was the senior osteo surgeon in the hospital, but was still doing simple leg casts! Any organisation the size of SNHS is going to have bad staff, and great staff. I was lucky, but I do genuinely sympathize with those who weren't so lucky. But I do still think we should be grateful for the health service we have - my experience could have been very different, or insanely expensive, in other countries! by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 10:33am)
  • Aye, I'm hoping for a future where we have complete control of our healthcare funding! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 10:30am)
  • A&E is definitely all about timing. If you're lucky the A&E gods are with you. Sorry it was bad my friend, I hope you're all repaired now! by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 12:15pm)
  • Hah! Yep, once the good drugs wore off I got a bit less starry eyed about the SNHS and a bit more sympathetic to the people who haven't had such a great experience... Still think it's brilliant tho... by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 1:29pm)
  • Definitely, when I first did it the shock covered up the pain. I was determined that I could walk, until four paramedics told me very firmly that I couldn't... by hox113 (Sun 13th Jun 2021 4:58pm)
  • If you don't mind me asking, what was the diagnosis? Sounds awful! by hox113 (Mon 14th Jun 2021 7:58am)
  • Hah! Yep, thinking about when I broke it makes me feel quite queasy. Weirdly if I imagine it from a passerby's perspective it doesn't make me feel so sick! I've bought a Limbo, they seem to be really good - thanks for the advice u/BearsAreNotCool ! by hox113 (Mon 14th Jun 2021 7:39pm)
  • God, I'm so sorry, that's a long list of failings. I get migraines, so I sympathize, but I suspect that mine are nowhere near as painful, or terrifying! Just as an aside - sumatriptan has really helped my migraines. They make you really dopy, but it's better than the pain - sounds like high blood pressure might be a contributing factor (because of the awful stress) and sumatriptan can help by lowering it. There does seem to have been a big increase in GP referrals as a result of covid restrictions. Some GPs have worked their absolute arses off during the pandemic, others seem to have disappeared in the wind... Again, I'm so sorry you had to go through all this. by hox113 (Mon 14th Jun 2021 9:54pm)
  • It's a really interesting debate u/elgropo , I can completely understand how am organisation the size of the NHS can end up inefficient without the incentives of competition and business survival, and I can almost see the logic of targets as an attempt to create that incentive. But I do also think it's vitally important that healthcare is available to anyone who needs it, especially those who don't have the resources for private healthcare. I can take a certain amount of inefficiency if the payoff is universal healthcare. But that's not to say that we shouldn't be constantly striving to improve. I'd guess that those staff who work under the inefficient systems find it more frustrating than anyone else - people (generally) love their jobs, and just want to be able to do them well! Maybe one day we'll find a way to run things efficiently, without needing the driver of competition.. by hox113 (Mon 14th Jun 2021 10:59pm)
  • Christ, that's general practice 101. FAST - face, arms, speech, time. That and 'my chest is tight and my left arm is sore...' Hope other NHS staff picked it up quickly and you recovered well. by hox113 (Tue 15th Jun 2021 8:50am)
  • Carlanne at Tres Beaux on Cathcart road just did a brilliant short cut for me. Rochelle at Curlagh on Victoria road is amazing, but very difficult to get a hold of. Good luck. by hox113 (Mon 21st Jun 2021 4:14pm)
  • I'm going argue this one. There are bits of the city and some cultures that can be hostile to incomers or immigrants (but being English can be as big an issue as being POC), but I'd argue that it's no worse than any UK city, or maybe even any Canadian city. There's brilliant organisations like Refuweegee who actively welcome immigrants with hello letters from glaswegians. But I'll agree to the ten day isolation comment. We're a city, we have lots of people. We're managing covid pretty well, but there's still outbreaks. In the last week there seems to have been quite a lot of cases pop up from the last week of the school term. Be smart, and isolate properly. I live in pollokshields, which has the double status of being the most ethnically diverse neighbourhood in Scotland, and recently the highest rate of covid (no connection, just a coincidence). Covid rates have settled. It's a bloody brilliant area, I love living here. Easy transport to the city centre and west end, lots of parks, lots of independent shops nearby, leafy and green. But that said, Glasgow is know as the 'dear, green place' (dear as in affection, rather than cost), so there's lots of very lovely areas. Welcome to our city! by hox113 (Wed 30th Jun 2021 7:52am)
  • That Sinking Feeling - 1979 robbery caper about a mob of wide boys nicking sinks. It give a brutal, but very funny, snapshot of what life was like in Glasgow in the 70s. Parts of the city were like a war scene, and the deprivation and lack of opportunity was brutal. It makes you realize how far the city has come, and explains a lot about that generation. Really broad accents in it - non Weegies may have to resort to subtitles. Weegies who do so should hang their head in shame.... https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0080012/ by hox113 (Thu 8th Jul 2021 10:41pm)

  • Thanks. Wee cat isn't going to last much longer, but she's not in pain, and is a fair old age, so we're just trying to keep her comfortable and spoil her! Hope your pup keeps well. by hox113 (Thu 2nd Sep 2021 1:18pm)
  • Fake? Really, why? I'm genuinely trying to make good on doing a shitty thing. I know it's not the same as apologising in person, and I really wish I'd gone back and done that at the time. It's been playing on my mind since then, and I thought I could at least give a shout out that we're not all awful, and that sometimes we say stupid things before we realise that they're stupid. by hox113 (Thu 2nd Sep 2021 3:04pm)

  • Freddie and Hicks. Absolutely amazing burgers. But they're south side, I'm not sure how far they deliver. If they don't deliver to you, come south and go pick some up some time. Absolutely worth it! by hox113 (Sun 3rd Oct 2021 1:08pm)
  • Articles that represent both sides of the debate, especially re independence. I'm capable of making my own mind up on an issue, but find it very hard to find reporting that represents both sides. So fed up with journalism with an agenda (and newspapers that think I'm too stupid to be able to spot their agenda....) Am interested to hear if redditors would recommend sources of impartial reporting for Scotland.... by hox113 (Thu 7th Jul 2022 2:00pm)
  • Hah, I was a stand in for Rene Zellweger on some pick up scenes once. Weirdest experience ever, but she was super polite and friendly. Like Southern belle/ Texan lady polite. (but this wasn't in Glasgow, so doesn't really count for this thread) by hox113 (Sun 11th Sep 2022 9:10pm)
  • Stolen from someone else - 2 people called Eilidh at work (pronounced Ay-Lee) Gay Eilidh = Gaylidh (pronounced Gay-Lee) Straight Eilidh = Strailidh (Stray-Lee) Then another Eilidh joined the workforce, having emigrated from Sydney. • Possible add on to 2. I think there are different types of surveys, some more detailed but more expensive. It's been ages since we bought ours, but I think I went for a more expensive report because it's a listed building. But things may have changed since then? by hox113 (Fri 18th Aug 2023 1:41pm)
  • Yep to this - I wonder if the OP's home report was only a level 2, so didn't pick up on the structural stuff. Level 3 are expensive, but sometimes it's worth it for the reassurance (and legal recompense if something is missed??). by hox113 (Sat 19th Aug 2023 9:29am)
