  • My friend, whose last name is Wright, hiked to Fort William with his girlfriend, grabbed a couple of tourist pensioners - also Mr & Mrs Wright (!) - as witnesses, and got married in the registry office. by moh_kohn (Fri 4th Jan 2019 1:17pm)
  • You can walk from the Kelvingrove Museum to the Botanic Gardens along the River Kelvin, it's a lovely walk. by moh_kohn (Sat 12th Jan 2019 12:01pm)

  • Folk are talking about HNCs, which is a good shout, but if you're in work you might also have the option of doing an SVQ - Scottish Vocational Qualification. They involve a mix of on-the-job training and course work. SVQ level 3 is equivalent to highers, and you can do degree and even PhD level SVQs too. I think you talk to your employer to find out if it's possible. by moh_kohn (Wed 20th Feb 2019 12:46pm)

  • Like events organising? Production management? Front of house...? Do you have any grant fundraising experience? Tough industry to be in right now with the endless cuts, though it's much better up here than south of the border. I might (*might*) be able to help put you in touch with some people. by moh_kohn (Wed 6th Mar 2019 4:50pm)
  • My wife's in that world so I'll ask her when she's home and PM you any advice she has. by moh_kohn (Wed 6th Mar 2019 5:07pm)
  • If it's a mistake that matters, just write to them giving an amendment. If it doesn't matter, I doubt they'll care. Welcome to adult life :) It's mostly less arbitrary than school and usually people prefer you to own up to and correct mistakes. I know that in school, that's a trap and you're better lying and hiding stuff from the teachers. That's just school, it's stupid. by moh_kohn (Thu 7th Mar 2019 5:37pm)
  • I'd be very surprised if that has any impact :) Good luck! by moh_kohn (Thu 7th Mar 2019 6:47pm)

  • The buses are slower than google maps claims during rush hour - you can get bogged down for a long time in the city centre. When I commuted from the west to the gorbals, I would take the bus to an underground station and then the underground from there, because it's so much quicker. I appreciate that's more of a financial stretch when you're a student though. It's definitely doable if you don't mind sitting on a bus for an hour each way. by moh_kohn (Thu 14th Mar 2019 8:43pm)
  • Usually considered one of the top cities in the UK alongside Manchester, Liverpool etc. London is its own thing by sheer size - the other cities feed their biggest bands to London, but those bands emerge from thriving local scenes. There's grassroots initiatives like [the Ice Box](https://www.newhellfireclub.co.uk/news/2018/12/7/what-to-expect-with-a-visit-to-the-ice-box-glasgows-newest-arts-and-music-space), historic venues like [King Tuts](https://www.kingtuts.co.uk/our-story) and [the Barrowlands](http://barrowland-ballroom.co.uk/about/). Not sure of the current situation, but in the past a few colleges and universities ran student record labels. Glasgow Uni has a radio station, SubCity. Both the SubCity and Sunny Govan radio stations have shows for playing local bands. If you do get a band going, playing the small festival circuit is a great way to build a fanbase. There's a 2k-10k capacity festival somewhere in Scotland every weekend through the summer. Particularly recommend attending Kelburn, Doune the Rabbit Hole, Knockengorroch, and Mugstock (disclaimer: I volunteer for Mugstock) by moh_kohn (Tue 19th Mar 2019 7:25pm)

  • Lots in common with Boston: wise guys, sports obsession, Irish pubs. The weather is crap but if you dress appropriately it won't bother you as much. Everything else is magnificent. Good nightlife, great pubs, friendly people. Lots of parks and museums and so on. Trade union culture so jobs tend to be 9-5. You'll enjoy the healthcare. You will have to pay a flat £300/year because you're not an EU citizen but that covers almost everything - including all prescription drugs. Dentistry does cost money, but is subsidised. You can just go to any pharmacy, doctor or hospital if you need to, without thinking about money or whether they're "on plan". by moh_kohn (Tue 2nd Apr 2019 8:00pm)

  • I've been told that this is often due to ownership by pension funds and the like, who are more interested in preserving the notional value of the asset than the income stream. by moh_kohn (Fri 5th Apr 2019 8:38pm)
  • Grew up there so I'm a bit out of date, but: it's a pretty small place, but very pretty. The university campus is pretty spectacular, a couple of miles out of town. Rental prices are about the same as the other urban areas in Scotland, don't know if I'd call that "cheap" exactly... but it's not super expensive either. Stirling itself has the usual range of shops, and a mainstream cinema. The university has an arts cinema. Good pubs but pretty crap nightlife, it's just not a big place. You are also only 40 minutes on the train from Glasgow and Edinburgh, both of which have all the amenities you would expect in a major city - cinemas of all sizes, nightclubs, etc. by moh_kohn (Thu 11th Apr 2019 6:11pm)
  • But the ones who succeeded in the "bad" school were smaller in number and had to overcome greater challenges to make it: so the opportunities are not equal. by moh_kohn (Sat 20th Apr 2019 1:43pm)
  • This is true, the racial gap is largely about class, but it is significant that most people from certain ethnic backgrounds end up working class. Hell it's only 50 years since the trade unions had to fight for black immigrants in Britain to be allowed to work as bus drivers, rather than just conductors. It will take a long time - maybe never, under capitalism - for the intergenerational wealth gap to close. by moh_kohn (Sat 20th Apr 2019 1:42pm)
  • Kelvin river walkway. I like to take visitors: Glasgow Uni, through cloisters out back to the flagpole -> down the hill to Kelvingrove Park -> river to Kelvinbridge -> stop for a coffee -> river to Botanic Gardens Sharmanka is cool if you like weird art by moh_kohn (Sun 21st Apr 2019 4:50am)
  • I was involved in the big student anti-cuts occupation in 2011. In the negotiations at the end, one of the management team literally said "we only care about international and rich English students" - because those students make money for the uni. by moh_kohn (Mon 22nd Apr 2019 2:10pm)

  • These folk have headed into town in full knowledge that they might face a violent loyalist mob. Journalists and photographers and passers-by were getting battered through the week. If someone was in it for an easy way to look good, I reckon they'd have found a less risky activity. by moh_kohn (Sat 20th Jun 2020 2:01pm)
  • That's insane! Don't do that! Skating on a pond is one thing, but if you plunge into a freezing canal you could die. The sudden cold can [knock you out](https://rnli.org/safety/know-the-risks/cold-water-shock), you could end up stuck under the ice, and the bottom of canals is usually viscous mud that you can get stuck in. by moh_kohn (Fri 8th Jan 2021 10:27am)
