  • Last I cycled there was early last month. Could it be because of the rainy weather? Does anyone know if its a temporary restriction or ....? by newbieRA (Mon 5th Jul 2021 11:29pm)
  • Didn't think of that, thanks for suggesting by newbieRA (Tue 6th Jul 2021 10:44am)
  • Oh wow that's brilliant. So the cycle path leads straight to west end? That would be awesome as that would make it easy. by newbieRA (Tue 6th Jul 2021 10:45am)
  • Let me have a look for that too, thank you by newbieRA (Tue 6th Jul 2021 5:41pm)
  • That is so helpful. Thankeew so much!!! by newbieRA (Tue 6th Jul 2021 5:40pm)
  • So nice of you to share it here and glad to see that both of you enjoyed the movie. Can you tell me which cinemas are open though? I seem to have totally missed that news by newbieRA (Thu 8th Jul 2021 10:00pm)

  • Thank you so much I can't wait to go there. I'm thinking of watching a quiet place cos it seems there's a part 2. I feel so behind movie world happenings by newbieRA (Thu 8th Jul 2021 11:59pm)

  • Thank you, this is helpful. Will keep you posted about how it goes by newbieRA (Fri 9th Jul 2021 8:13am)
  • Just an update, all went well. Lovely people, and area. However, the room itself and whole house smelt a bit dusty. It was super clean in surfaces and well decorated, it's just the smell was in the air. Do you think it's a matter of concern? Thank you by newbieRA (Fri 9th Jul 2021 7:41pm)
  • Not nearby but a few blocks away for sure. However the air outside was super clean and fresh it was just when I was inside I could sense it by newbieRA (Fri 9th Jul 2021 10:55pm)
  • I have spent last few days on room hunt and spareroom site has plenty of city center options in that range. For some you may have to pitch in the bills but there were plenty near Strathclyde in that range. by newbieRA (Sat 10th Jul 2021 11:18pm)
  • I would also suggest a few of the city center student halls . Not all but some have rooms starting from about 90 a week. That can be a good option security wise by newbieRA (Sat 10th Jul 2021 11:25pm)
  • Because a lot of biking related stuff is male dominated, they have special times and, events for females and non binary folks. BfG is inclusive and they also work with people of different backgrounds and cultures, so sometimes these events are reflective of that. For instance, while gender of the teacher does not matter to you, people from other cultures may not feel so. If however you are interested in learning mechanical techniques, go to their fix your own bike session or book a maintenence lesson which is open for everyone. All throughout the week their activities are open to all genders. Only one day a week some of those activities are specific to certain genders so people not comfortable in mixed spaces can have a chance to learn skills. by newbieRA (Sun 11th Jul 2021 7:56am)
  • Bike for Good perhaps? by newbieRA (Sun 11th Jul 2021 10:14am)
  • No idea about bars but byres road is quieter than normal I just got back home, it you wanna explore west end, I think it will remain okay. by newbieRA (Sun 11th Jul 2021 6:46pm)
  • West end is so quiet :( by newbieRA (Sun 11th Jul 2021 11:56pm)
  • I'd suggest checking at waterstones and oxfam in the west end or even the hillhead lib for a pattern book. by newbieRA (Mon 12th Jul 2021 10:15am)
  • No worries at all! On a side note, I am just getting into embroidery and ordered a set at amazon (I know, my bad) which included patterns, materials everything, so if nothing works, check Amazon! by newbieRA (Mon 12th Jul 2021 10:33am)
  • Hahaha that was me with sewing and knitting! I never graduated to anything beyond clothes my dolls could wear (and let's say they weren't the most fashionable dressed haha)! Thanks for not judging hehe. That's my first time embroidery too, but the set has so many guidelines that it's easier than other things I have tried. I will check the books out too! Happy sewing!! by newbieRA (Mon 12th Jul 2021 10:43am)
  • Apart from the sites mentioned already, open market is also one where a few landlords advertise their places privately. Having been in a similar position just a few days ago, I know how hard it can be to find the best place. From what I know, when you go to viewings, if it is indeed the place you want, show enthusiasm, apply right away, have the documents etc ready. Generally agencies will want you to earn more than 30 times the rent annually. You can still apply for the place if you earn less, but that does come under consideration, so apply for both ideal place but also good enough place. Also, if circumstances allow, as others have suggested, spare room may be easier and quicker option by newbieRA (Mon 12th Jul 2021 8:04pm)
  • I remember seeing a tweet/retweet (not sure) by greater glasgow police account, sharing the CCTV image of someone they were looking for. I wonder if the two events are related by newbieRA (Mon 12th Jul 2021 8:15pm)
  • Police in Glasgow are requesting information if you recognise this person as they may be able to help with an investigation. by newbieRA (Mon 12th Jul 2021 8:32pm)
  • Used their help 6 years ago. They sent two people who picked up six heavy book boxes from my room, brought them downstairs, put them in the van and on unloaded it all on airport cargo. I went with them to airport in their van and came back on my own. Hope this helps. by newbieRA (Tue 13th Jul 2021 8:13pm)
  • Can you also guide, if I order stuff online, is there a way to request if they'd send it assembled cos I have no idea about the tools needed and have zero experience of assembling any furniture. Thanks a bunch by newbieRA (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:08pm)
  • Oh didn't know that. I got vouchers from love2shop so not sure if they are usable at IKEA. by newbieRA (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:06pm)
  • Got it, that's good to know. I think I better order from IKEA than and order a screwdriver and use vouchers on something else by newbieRA (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:21pm)
  • That's reassuring to hear! Let's give it a try then. Last question, do the tools come with it or do I need to order them separately and how do I know which tools to get? Thank you so much!! by newbieRA (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:19pm)
  • That's very helpful, thank you! I will check with them by newbieRA (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:48pm)
  • Yeah looks like that's the only option I got! (It's exciting nonetheless, as long as I don't mess up haha) by newbieRA (Tue 13th Jul 2021 10:52pm)
  • You mean actual clouds? From where I am (West End) they seem the same as usual by newbieRA (Wed 14th Jul 2021 6:08pm)
  • I'm in student halls and they don't have fans generally. So I open both windows at night and keep the curtains drawn during the day. However last few days have been scorching so I just asked for a pedastal fan and they have given us. I hope when I move out, the new place has a fan too. I would also suggest cotton sheets and taking off mattress toppers and warmers (in the halls they have way too much stuff on mattresses to make them cosy, but it's cooler without them all). by newbieRA (Wed 14th Jul 2021 10:44pm)
  • If nothing else works, take a cold shower before bed! by newbieRA (Wed 14th Jul 2021 10:46pm)
  • Happy to hear that by newbieRA (Wed 14th Jul 2021 11:15pm)
  • I would say, put the wet wrung out sheet over you and then put the fan on. Absolute bliss (for some while at least) by newbieRA (Thu 15th Jul 2021 9:28am)
  • That last bit ! 🤣 by newbieRA (Thu 15th Jul 2021 9:31am)
  • Seriously. I thought fans were way expensive! Thanks for letting me know. We can't get unapproved electrical items in halls though so for now will use theirs, but it's a good tip for when I move out by newbieRA (Thu 15th Jul 2021 1:47pm)

  • If you can't avail cycle to work option which others have suggested, there are a few things I'd suggest. A) you can rent a bike for a few months from bike for good. This will have the advantage that the bike stays with you all the time. B) get next bike membership, if you are a student you can get discount, and you can avail discount even via bfg. C) there are a few bike shops near Eusebi on Gibson Street, where there is a bank called UBL. D) I know you mentioned not BFG but have you checked at both South and West hub? If not, I'd suggest doing that too. E) Free wheel North may be able to lend a bike for rides but I'm not hundred percent sure. F) lastly, if there's a student accomodation/halls in your area, ask their management as many a times when students moving out of country leave their bikes behind and many are left rotting for ages until donated. I know this cos our halls donated a few bikes that were unclaimed. by newbieRA (Sun 18th Jul 2021 7:43pm)

  • I'd say after a while try relocating to edinburgh if that's a possibility. The route is not long from Glasgow but depending on the day/time it will get very busy and you may not always get a seat. The bus is of course cheaper and the advantage of train is of course the scenery or if someone is motion sick but given you'll be commuting there regularly, I'd opt to save some funds by taking bus. But I will suggest, if your circumstances allow, pls get an accomodation near your workplace as personally I find the longer commute for work just isn't worth it. by newbieRA (Mon 23rd Aug 2021 7:09pm)

I am leaving my room later this month and my landlords are looking for someone to occupy one of the two rooms. Unfortunately their preference is women, it is not ideal but reliable sane people. • Assuming you're from one of the countries where currency value is different and 55000 a year seems way less. If you order at delivero three times a day for two people and assuming you're eating lavishly that's 100 a day. So 3000 is what you'll be spending on food a month. Rent ranges between 600-700 in West end, should be similar or cheaper near city center, but let's say you get a cool place and have heating on all day long so that's another 1000 gone each month. Not sure if you'll drive, but if you're living in city center, you can easily get public transport or bike or walk nearly everywhere so I wouldn't say more than 100 for that a month (bulk buy tickets) unless you're ubering everywhere. So that's your food, living and travel sorted. For everything else you'll find that things range from the affordable to luxury and you decide what you want. The thing you need to consider before moving here specially if you're from a non UK background is, the taxes. I've no idea what the taxes would be on an income like yours but I think its 12000 that's tax free and for anything above you gotta pay tax, and its increased as per earnings so I am assuming at least 10 k of that 55k would be gone in taxes. Not that the leftover is not good salary. You'd still be earing more than double an average person makes. by newbieRA (Sat 11th Dec 2021 2:18pm)

  • Reading this, I'm concerned that the guy needs help. I know that swelling in the nasal cavity can impede nose breathing and sometimes lead to snoring. Other possible options are adenoids, polyps or sleep apnea. I know its tough but you need to speak to the guy, than doing something unreasonable. Talk to him and mention you're concerned about his health, and while NHS looks into it, do other measures like moving the bed etc. SOURCE: flatmate with snoring and snorting turned out to have swelling in the nasal cavity.
