  • When I moved out my council flat patrick housing made me rip up all the flooring. Most of it was either brand new or within 6 months old. They told me to get it all up or they would be charging me for removal. Seemed absolutely stupid as I had spent a fortune on the carpets and flooring and it was like new. 🤷🏻‍♂️ by shug82 (Sun 18th Oct 2020 2:53pm)
  • Yeah it was a dummy slate laminate in the kitchen and and a high gloss laminate in the hall with grey carpets in the living room and bedrooms. They didn't even ask the girl who was moving in if she wanted them. by shug82 (Sun 18th Oct 2020 6:57pm)

It's pretty easy to stick to the guidelines if your travelling alone and don't have kids to think of. by shug82 (Sun 1st Nov 2020 12:07pm)

  • I stay in the John Neilson Institute. We have a doors open day here every year apart from this year. The best place for this information would be the Paisley Museum as it has a heritage department. The thing is though, it is closed for renovation works. I've been in and found a lot of info on the John Neilson Institute. This could probably be a good place to go (When it opens back up) by shug82 (Mon 9th Nov 2020 9:34pm)
  • Yeah no problem. I'll do it when I get home. The statue is Diogenes and it was Sandy Stoddard who done it. He made the statue as a kind of two fingers up to the yuppies of the 90's who the flats where aimed at when the building got renovated into flats. Diogenes was anti materialistic. by shug82 (Tue 10th Nov 2020 2:29pm)

  • Do these smart meters have the capability to disconnect your power remotely? I know if you don't pay your bills then fair enough, but I've had a few disputes about my billing in the past and wouldn't like to think they had the ability to switch me off while I'm in the middle of a grievance with them. by shug82 (Tue 17th Nov 2020 1:30pm)
  • This seems to be an every other day occurrence lately with the sad news being announced via the Scotrail twitter page by shug82 (Wed 18th Nov 2020 8:14pm)
  • The thing is though. A lot of people like going into the town to spend the day wandering through the shops. I honestly don't think this is the end of physical retail. I do think over the next few months once the restrictions are lifted there will be a massive surge of people going back into the town. Hopefully the retailers can weather the storm until then though. by shug82 (Tue 1st Dec 2020 9:49pm)
  • The Bellgrove hotel is up for sale for a new development. That along with the Bluevale flats and the rest of the spare ground could be a chance to build new houses giving it a lift. by shug82 (Wed 2nd Dec 2020 10:05pm)
  • See if you can organise your own in depth roof report. I do a lot of work using rope access around Glasgow on tenements carrying out gutter cleaning, inspection, minor works etc. Find out if there's a once or twice yearly gutter cleaning programme in place, especially twice if there's a lot of trees about. It's one of the easiest and forgot about jobs but can have a serious impact. You will be surprised as to the state of some of the roofs as most factors work on charging the client maximum but will send out the cheapest roofer. A lot of tenement owners/tenants take pride in their building and we have found that they tend to bypass the factor as they are mostly reactive and will wait until something goes wrong before they act. Do your due diligence. Find out how old the roof is, what sort of maintenance plan is in place and chap the doors in the close and introduce yourself. See if they have a committee. Oh and going by buying old vs new. Definitely old every time. by shug82 (Thu 3rd Dec 2020 8:13am)

  • Speak to HES (Historic Scotland) they might be able to give your close a grant for decoration works. We recently done works on a building, but the stipulation on the grant was that the the repainting works had to go back to the buildings original colour. by shug82 (Sun 31st Oct 2021 7:23am)

  • Is the gutter needing replaced? Was a survey carried out to see if the gutters can be repaired? We had the same scenario with a client a few years ago who was quoted a fortune (I can't remember off the top of my head the price) This included front and rear scaffolding and as it was on a hill. A cherry picker was out of the question. We were able to carry out GRP repairs to the joints as it was a glass fibre gutter using rope access. It's always better to renew but there might be a way to get a few more years out them. by shug82 (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 10:05pm)
  • As someone mentioned before. Make sure they have a minimum of three quotes. Ask the factors to see the quotes and what the mark up is that they are charging for their admin part in the process, should be no more than 15% If and when the work gets carried out. Email the factor to say you want the work documented ie. Photos of the rotten joists and full photos and written report of the work that has been carried out. Most contractors nowadays have to send photos of the work with a report to their client so this shouldn't be an issue for the factor to send it over to you. Hopefully this helps a bit. 👍🏻 by shug82 (Fri 22nd Apr 2022 10:38pm)

  • That's true about the tunnel under George Square / City Chambers. It's a tunnel that goes from the BT Dial house next to the hilton hotel and goes to the city chambers and further on to the Royal infirmary. The idea was that if there was an attack in Glasgow communications could still be used via accessing the dial house via the tunnel and the hospital could be reached. I done work in the dial hous ea few years back and that's what the building manager told me, I was dying to have a look at the access door is on the lower ground floor but as expected you need a permit to access the tunnel and the door has about half a dozen locks. by shug82 (Sat 17th Sep 2022 8:49pm)

  • I stayed on the Bibby Challenge for nearly 2 years up in the Shetlands, fair enough it was single cabins then but we where the lucky ones as a lot of other folk staying in other accommodation Sella Ness etc had to share rooms. I really don't see the issue with this boarding as they will have a clean room, WiFi, gym etc area and meals. Not to mention they have freedom to move about. We got alcohol tested if we were back after 9pm and random sniffer dogs at the main entrance of the barge every now and again. by shug82 (Mon 7th Aug 2023 10:02pm)
  • Believe me, I've worked away most of my days on and offshore and the Bibby barges are a lot better than most of the B&B's/ houses/Hotels I have had the unfortunate pleasure of staying in. Especially if you get a room with a view of the sea. Have you stayed on a barge? by shug82 (Mon 7th Aug 2023 10:36pm)
  • As I stated it was half capacity with single rooms however, it's designed to accommodate double rooms. They will just buy more bandwidth to suit the upmannning of personnel. Gym, well if it was me, I have and would be setting my alarm early bells to make sure I'm in when it's empty, but this could be managed logistically with a time sign in sheet the night before with hour slots to stop the gym being rammed. I'd like to think that they will be putting guys in with people they know, nothing worse than having to share a room with someone you don't know who snores or has no housekeeping skills. by shug82 (Tue 8th Aug 2023 2:15pm)
