  • I am a student in History, I've worked in politics, I dig music (classical, some Scottish folk and American bluegrass music, rock, some electronic stuff), tv, the occasional film. I was taking bagpipe lessons which kinda dropped off when I moved back here. As an American I'm far too ashamed to go to the park and start trying to play music. (An American in Scotland trying to play the pipes? pbbt!) by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 11:14am)
  • I think that is part of it. You get into the rut of isolation and even though its terrible, its hard to snap out of it. This last year has been somehow worse than 2020. My Dad almost died in May, and had a stroke last week (albeit a mild one), and sitting here thinking about that, and staring into a computer screen taking notes all day. It succccks. by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 11:48am)
  • Sure. I sort of miss the West End. Its weird how the first place you live in a given area sort of imprints on you, it's your 'hood. I'm down on the Southside because my former flatmate brought a place down here, and I have a steal on rent...but it does feel a bit isolating. by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 11:46am)
  • We had 'lockdown' back home last year but I spent half of the year with my parents (working remotely and running errands for my mother who is immunocompromised). It helped somewhat that I had access to my car and I'd often go out on long drives on the weekend. I did buy a car here, a cheap one. I have driven down to Ayr, and up north to Glencoe, just to get out (I'm driving on my US license but its only valid in the UK for one year of residency. I've applied for a provisional from DVLA back in late July but I've gotten nothing from them...) I was out in the city centre Tuesday to meet with my PhD supervisor in person for the first time since I arrived in January. It occurred to me when I was standing outside of Central station how much I just missed seeing people out and about. by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 12:17pm)
  • Ya I'm always up for getting out of here and having conversation! by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 12:19pm)
  • I'm a 2x Glasgow Uni alum if that counts for anything. :P by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 1:49pm)
  • I'm originally from Georgia. If you've ever seen the tv series, The Walking Dead, my parents live in the town that's filmed (although they lived there when it was a quaint little decaying town before it become so trendy..). I was working at Appalachian State University in western NC before I returned to Glasgow (I realised I enjoyed the cooler weather in Scotland, plus my father is from western NC so I decided to find a job out there away from the traffic of Atlanta or Charlotte). I think some of what has happened is the mixed message of don't go out, you could get Covid and die, or give it to someone else kind of messed with my head a bit too much. Plus as I said elsewhere, my father experienced some health calamities this year and I did not leave and instead opted to take my savings to pay some of his bills like his car and mortgage while he was unable to work (he lost his self proprietorship business due to his health issues). I am a history PhD student (comparative cultural study between the Scots-Irish of the Carolinas in the 18th century and the 'Ulster-Scots' or Ulster Presbyterians of the same period in Ireland). I'm smitten with medieval to early 19th century history in general, English, Scottish, or early American. Historic architecture, music (classical, folk, bluegrass, rock, some electronic), some tv and film. I know it sounds very redneck-y but I used to go to a rifle range back home, if I knew anyone was into clay shooting I might give that a go on an occasion here. I'm looking forward to the holiday period and the city being decked out in decor and lights...I'm a big fan of autumn and the early winter. by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 1:45pm)
  • I'm down for an old folks get together. by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 2:40pm)

  • I'm within close driving distance of it. I live near Marylee Primary but I do drive over to Silverburn if I want to torture myself with a trip to M&S. by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 5:44pm)
  • Heh. I was in lockdown last year and worked remotely until August. We were given the option of working at the office or remotely and I was one of the few who decided to go in daily. Granted I had my own office with a door, but I needed to get up, put on 'adult' clothes and show up. (I'm not against working remotely but at the same time I needed separation between home and work life) by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 6:25pm)
  • I haven't spent a ton of time in Charlotte, although I did pop down there now and again. It always seemed like a somewhat smaller version of Atlanta (which is the biggest city near where I am from). I never owned a gun until a few years ago but I took some training in the US, and it became a side hobby of sorts (the police encouraged it in western NC, as they said they could not easily respond to every call covering a rural mountain region. I've only been clay shooting once, and that was here in Scotland. It seemed like a good time, and ya I'm always up for doing something with someone! ;) by vipergirl (Thu 7th Oct 2021 10:13pm)
