  • Bit late to the party, but as a UWS grad and current Strathclyde student: definitely do your research on course accreditation bebfore you go. Pretty sure that at least half of all the law students at UWS haven’t. Some of the stuff that happens at UWS in terms of admin does make one think that the place barely deserves the “U” In terms of social stuff and extra-curriculars, I suggest Strathclyde by Applepieoverdose (Sun 27th Oct 2019 1:12pm)
  • Speaking as a black Austrian living in Scotland, I respectfully disagree with you. The First Minister has put out messages that we EU citizens are still welcome, I’ve not heard anybody say anything anti-european (not north of the border, at least). The only bit of xenophobia I can identify in Scotland is towards a country that has once more elected a political party that has screwed Scotland and the rest of the UK, and is screwing the rest of the EU. Personally, I can understand feeling hostile towards those who, as a group, seem to want to ruin you. by Applepieoverdose (Sat 14th Dec 2019 8:14pm)
  • Mate, the UK under the tories doesn’t need any help in creating conditions that promote that. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-48354692 Note that the govt use a different measure for what poverty means; friends of mine were on the dole, and had an entire £2 a day for food and travel, after rent and bills (flat is cheap af). To the govt? No poverty there. To the UN? Poverty. by Applepieoverdose (Mon 16th Dec 2019 10:51am)
  • Just this is a failing? No, my friend. Public transport here in general is. How many bus companoes are there? All of them, the subway, and the trains all use different, non-interchangeable, and frankly expensive tickets for service that ranges from mediocre (First, Scotrail) to having enough room for improvement that you could bankrupt Switzerland and only bring them up to passable. There are at least 7 different routes for Number 38 buses; if you’re new to the city then good luck. Rail prices at peak times are different to non peak times? And using a railcard at peak times brings it to £12? To paraphrase Alexander Hamilton, there are over 1000000 words in the English language, and no combination of them expresses how much I want to hit the persons who permitted this to happen in their faces with chairs. A 10-week pass for Mcgills buses (as a student) costs over £100. A year’s ticket for Vienna costs €365, and includes buses, trains, trams, and the (functional and extensive) subway. When I’ve calmed down a bit, I’ll sit and do the maths for how much a year of use of the major bus companies in Glasgow costs. by Applepieoverdose (Tue 11th Feb 2020 9:42am)

  • Thanks for pointing out my mistake, I meant mediocre at best. The list of reasons I have heard from Scotrail about why their trains are late/cancelled: -Too rainy -Too windy -Too cold (-2°c and lower) -Too hot (25°c and above) -Too snowy Vienna gets -20°c in the winter, and just under 40°c in the summer. I doubt that the rails are majorly different. by Applepieoverdose (Wed 12th Feb 2020 2:53pm)

  • Isn’t he the same guy who believes that everyone should fast every second day? by Applepieoverdose (Wed 12th Feb 2020 4:26pm)
  • I wholeheartedly support that by Applepieoverdose (Wed 12th Feb 2020 4:33pm)
  • About dirtiness, I partially agree. The users cause the dirt, but if it’s a manageable amount then the transport should be able to clean it. Even if it were to become a system that breaks even rather than tries to make a profit, I feel it’d be much cheaper. True, subsidies are presumably what makes public transport cheaper in Vienna, but the government there pumps far less into banks, but the people instead. by Applepieoverdose (Wed 12th Feb 2020 5:59pm)
  • See, it’s easy to say that transport is the only difference, but I disagree. The NHS is criminally underfunded, while Austrian state healthcare isn’t, for example. In terms of underfunding in Austria, the only example that immediately springs to mind is the army; Austria is neutral though, so it doesn’t really have such a big impact. by Applepieoverdose (Wed 12th Feb 2020 9:33pm)
  • The difference is simply privatisation. All those cities with integrated public transport tend (reluctant to say all definitely have only) to have public/government-owned public transport. Here, on the other hand, everything is private, and is out to make a profit by Applepieoverdose (Wed 12th Feb 2020 9:36pm)
  • Not giving change means more profit. If a ticket costs 45p, most people will put in 50p. Multiply that by acoupl eod thousand times a day, et voila by Applepieoverdose (Thu 13th Feb 2020 12:21am)

  • I know, I've been living in Paisley for about 7 years now, originally from Vienna. The joy when I found Milchshnitten, Pingui, and Choco Fresh in polish shops cannot be expressed without profanity by Applepieoverdose (Thu 23rd Apr 2020 4:03pm)

  • I’d say it serves much in the same way as any pasta; would you be satisfied with plain pasta? Also, personally, I’m not too impressed by the food from West. Do have to admit I’ve only been a couple of times by Applepieoverdose (Thu 23rd Apr 2020 7:34pm)
  • Personally, I’d suggest a Gulasch or a Jägerschnitzel. Neither really needs anything you can’t get here. (Pro-tip: if the recipe calls for you to bread the Jägerschnitzel, *it’s wrong*. Sauce and breaded Schnitze are not compatible; this is a hill I am willing to die on, have a look at r/schnitzelverbrechen) by Applepieoverdose (Thu 23rd Apr 2020 7:42pm)

  • We PMed a wee bit a few months ago, right? They have 2 Aufschnitt at my Lidl; one with (Käs-, Krakauer, can’t recall the thid) Wurst, the other with (Land-, Ofen, Pfeffer- iirc)Schinken. by Applepieoverdose (Thu 23rd Apr 2020 8:19pm)

  • ... Bad life decisions. Studying at UWS for my undergrad, too energy-conservative and price conscious (read: lazy and cheap) to move into Glasgow for my postgrad. Will have to move over the Summer for my next degree. by Applepieoverdose (Fri 24th Apr 2020 10:16am)
  • Thanks! Tbh, I kinda love Paisley, and love to hate it too. I have strongly mixed feelings. Decided with to move for the degree so I could see if the grass really is greener somewhere else by Applepieoverdose (Fri 24th Apr 2020 9:53pm)

  • Currently actually doing law at Strathy (LLM, mind you. Off to do my LLB in Erinburgh next year!) Really good uni; the staff care, and most of the other students (generally, and in no mean way) don’t give a fuck about you, unless you’re a tosspot. (I highly advise joining a couple of sports btw, more so than societies. *cough*archery*cough*) by Applepieoverdose (Sat 2nd May 2020 3:36am)
  • A part of it, I think, is maybe actually the bins themselves. Black bins sort of fade into the background; back home, public bins are generally orange, and admittedly also smaller but way more common. by Applepieoverdose (Tue 23rd Jun 2020 1:08pm)

  • Ah, I thought you meant direct flights Flights with stopovers (especially with those 3!) would get you to a stupid amount of places, though; I feel almost like it’s cheating by Applepieoverdose (Tue 2nd Aug 2022 3:24am)
