  • My mum makes curtains for her big tenement windows using canvas lined with wool blankets she gets cheap from charity shops (they don’t always have them out so you need to ask - Salvation Army on Dumbarton Rd in Partick might be good). The windows are for sure the major heat loss point and proper curtains that go to the floor are vital. But extortionate if bought! by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Wed 15th Sep 2021 11:34am)

  • Agreed. There is some pretty impressive functionality from the world of gaming etc. that I wish would get some roll-out in other sectors. Obviously still a carbon impact running all the tech, but it could be way less and way way more cool to be in an immersive virtual reality conference. by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Fri 15th Oct 2021 9:33pm)
  • Ok, downvotes. It was just a thought. I once did a 72 hour sponsored silence for the Disasters Emergency Committee, ten years ago, and managed to raise a grand coz plenty folks knew how tough a quest it was to stay quiet for so long... I work for the UN and I have been a sustainability practitioner for a while. I just despair about the incessant talking and the inaction is all. For the record, I don’t reject COP26 fundamentally as an attempt at addressing increasing climate disaster, it’s just hard not to feel despondent when I have worked with this for 15+ years and it’s the same each time. Talking, promises, targets and inaction afterwards. by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Fri 15th Oct 2021 9:41pm)

  • It’s only one aspect. There’s a lot more to sustainability than environmental issues (i.e., social issues, economic issues and institutional issues too), and there’s a lot more to environmental sustainability than carbon dioxide reduction. by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Thu 4th Nov 2021 12:23am)

  • Back in 2011 - not counting my stint in Il Cappuccino on Byres Rd at minimum wage (I think) - managed to land a temp p/t role paying £15k p/a after my MSc. Down in England-shire. It was really hard financially and super infuriating professionally! Very underemployed. Took ages to creep that up to a permanent role in my field - with the same employer - at £19k p/a. Stuck around a little more (half a year tops) then passed the role to someone else & moved back to Glasgow for a contractor opportunity at more like £35k p/a. by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Thu 27th Jan 2022 8:07pm)

Used a mattock (sledgehammer) to open their beer and their dog is definitely not on a string or lease of any sort. • When I made an offer before a closing date scenario (there were no other notes of interest so it didn’t go to that stage) it was actually the estate agent for the sellers who followed up with me to ask if I liked it and what my offer was. It was being sold by kids of elderly parent so there was probably an incentive to lock in a purchase ASAP. I know that sometimes estate agents will ‘front’ as if there is more than one note of interest so you push to your maximum / best offer. As in, even tho it is only you interested officially, they might still make it a closing date scenario to add the pressure. However, I would say that at the moment it’s a very popular time so unless it’s been on the market for a while and is a mad fixer-upper, chances are that there are several notes of interest for real. • OMG yes. I was there too. Incredible. I think the security folks gave up taking peoples studded jewellery and belts off them eventually, there were tables at the doorways covered with things with little raffle tickets so you could get them back. Ha ha. Kissed a random at that show. Took a photo of him afterwards with a disposable camera but it came out all steamed up so I’ll never know who he was apart from fun to dance / mosh / winch with! That’s the main thing eh. by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Thu 17th Feb 2022 9:13am)
  • Yes! Less than Jake! It was on a Tuesday and then ended up at the QMU for ‘Revolution’. Went up to some dude with kids by dreads there later and was all *“you totally look like the singer from Less than Jake”* and he answered in an American accent. And then I was like ohhhhhhhh. Ha! Super fun memories. My boyfriend at the time had a twisted ankle when we went to that show. He was totally fecked when gig began - it was jumping from start to finish! by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Thu 17th Feb 2022 9:16am)
  • At one point he stapled some bras onto his body. The stunts & pranks just didn’t translate for the stage well and the energy was so desolate. Especially if you are accustomed to fecking ace Barrowlands shows, it was massively disappointing. by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Thu 17th Feb 2022 9:34am)

  • Naaaah. Nick Oliveri and I tried to yank one of the ceramic stars off the dressing room wall & I tried to steal some of the bud that was lying around. I was a bit of a radge to be honest. I was unbelievably rude to the drummer. Does “sleazed on” come in the guise of having “you need mental help” written on your décolletage?! I went backstage on a few occasions actually coz of a link to the promoter (sort of pseudo Godfather character). I think I was heavily annoying. Got my pals back one time too and then they made friends with the band & followed them around the U.K. and Europe a bit. Not sure if there was more to it than that... Only time I had shitty experience with musicians and getting sleazed on was The Vandals. Same set up, managed to get backstage at a festival thing at the SECC due to a contact, before they played their show, and then I asked for a song to be played. Someone in the band said *”what will you do for it?”* and there was a long pause coz naive me couldn’t actually understand what they meant. I was only 14 :/ Anyways, someone else was like *”yeah sure we’ll play it”* and they did so that was ... nice? Still have a gross feeling now when I think about it. Some school pals had a bit of a super yuck on-stage situation with Bloodhound Gang tho. Kinda massively tainted their music for me. by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Thu 17th Feb 2022 5:46pm)

  • I had big issues with this tbh. Had a mortgage broker at Slater, Hogg & Howison on Byres Rd help us, called Clare. She was great. Some places actually categorised me as a dependent for my spouse (along with our kids) and adjusted what they could borrow downwards due to having to pay for me, even though I had £1,200+ come in each month set for another 3 years. Am now nearer end of my PhD and realise that before the passing of 1st year annual performance review one is (potentially) at risk of getting ejected... Don’t think the banks think like that but it definitely isn’t considered a solid “real” income in the U.K. - different to elsewhere in Europe for example where being a PhD student is actually a job (with employment contract plus associated rights). But TSB doesn’t make me a dependent. The income doesn’t count towards the loan tho. Note: we’d already bought before I changed to be a PhD student so it was a remortgage situation by GroundbreakingAd4386 (Mon 18th Apr 2022 7:06pm)
