  • You should go to the council building at george square!! They do 2 free tours everyday :) one is at 2.30pm I believe and I think the other is at 11 am but I'm not certain! by Jenniferh9309 (Sat 12th Jan 2019 12:52pm)
  • Live in Kinning Park just now, although I'm behind the main road, tucked away. But I agree. Plantation Park can be a bit rowdy after a rangers game. And the Subway is a bloody nightmare on those days too. by Jenniferh9309 (Tue 9th Apr 2019 3:18pm)
  • Lived in Muirend for 2 years and never had any problems. It's only a 10 minute walk away so can't imagine they're too different :) by Jenniferh9309 (Mon 15th Apr 2019 12:22am)
  • I'd go for the 5 tickets - I went to Stirling uni and honestly it's only a 30-40 minute walk from the centre to the uni. Could walk on nice days and save yourself some money? by Jenniferh9309 (Mon 2nd Sep 2019 11:25am)
  • Oooh sorry, just assumed you were staying on campus, my mistake by Jenniferh9309 (Mon 2nd Sep 2019 6:42pm)
  • I mean, there are pubs in every single area, usually multiple pubs. There will be people getting drunk in each of these pubs every night. The cost of having wardens walking the streets in the hopes of catching these drunken idiots far outweighs the benefits. by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 20th Oct 2019 12:01am)
  • Cars parked everywhere but only pay for parking meters in certain council-chosen areas. And that's where they check. Drunk people can go anywhere, it wouldn't work. by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 20th Oct 2019 12:03pm)
  • I don't know why I've put so much effort into this, but here we go. Also there will be a whole bunch of things wrong with this but I'm a 23 year old lassie and I'm hungover. Glasgow has 385 pubs (in 2018). Glasgow is roughly 67.5 square miles. Say each pub has at least one person getting drunk every night, that's 385 drunk people; now let's say that one quarter of them are rowdy, that's about 96 drunk people who could be anywhere in a 67.5 square mile radius every night. It's needles in a haystack. This doesn't take into consideration people getting drunk at home, or groups getting drunk in a public place, so we can probably suppose there's more than that number. But how much can someone be fined for walking along a street drunk? How much should someone be charged for making too much noise? Say it's a £50 fine for each person who is caught, let's say half of the people are caught - that's £2400 per night being made. Then, as someone has already said, it'd have to be police doing the job - a warden like we have for parking doesn't have the tools or training at his disposal for dealing with a serious conflict. And, if we were going to catch enough people to make this worthwhile, we'd need at least two police officers per 3 square miles (two because of the nature of the job). To make it fair, though, we'll half that - so we'd have 20 extra police on every night (2 police per 6 square miles). That's £520,000 basic salary per year, or £10000 per week and that's the lowest this will cost, because then you have admin fees, cost of vehicles, and the fact that this is based on first year salaries for each police officer. I'm not taking into account the surplus on a Friday and Saturday night, because there are more police then, but also more drunk people. That means that on the off chance that the two police officers in the 6 square mile radius were able to catch at least half the drunk and disorderly people, the council would make £6800 per week, at the absolute most. Locating the drunk people would depend on calls from residents or just sheer luck. And that's a risk that isn't worth taking. There are likely 1000 things wrong with my maths and understanding, but to me I think it's ridiculous that people are so up in arms about drunk people being too loud. We're a city with a really bad drinking problem - everyone knows it. Just mind your own business and get on with your life. If a drunk person has harassed you to the point where you feel significantly uncomfortable, or they've been on your street for long enough to cause disruption then call the police. by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 20th Oct 2019 2:07pm)
  • I agree in general, but apparently there has been a rise in the number of sexual assaults around Glasgow uni? Don't know if it's just because I'm a female student but I keep hearing stories of young women getting attacked around Byres Road, Kelvin Way, etc. by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 9th Feb 2020 2:05pm)
  • I used HAP lettings on Great Western Road for 2 years. They weren't perfect and they definitely tried to take more than they were owed from the deposit (we left a cardboard box under the bed and for some reason they felt like £50 was how much that cost to dispose of?) but we didn't have too many issues with them. That being said the past 2 places I've lived in have been private landlords and I much prefer it. Just make sure that they're registered, etc. by Jenniferh9309 (Fri 3rd Jul 2020 12:24pm)
  • You've got a few answers about Paisley, so I'll chip in on my experience with flats near the city centre. I've been a student at Strathclyde for 4 years and starting my masters there in September. Most of my student friends live in Dennistoun - you can get a good price flatshare there but I'm not sure that you'll get anything as cheap as in Paisley. You might get a studio/1 bedroom for the top end of your budget, but remember that bills, etc. will also be entirely your responsibility. I have a few friends who cycle from Dennistoun as well and they seem to find it ok. I personally live on the southside in Govanhill, which isn't a great area but I haven't seen any trouble yet. It has good transport links and cycle lanes to the city centre, too. You can get some pretty cheap flatshares in Govanhill as well. I know you didn't ask, but just fyi, I'd personally avoid student halls. They're so expensive and though some of them are in a really good location you won't know who you're living with until you're there, unlike a flat share where you can meet the people first. Hope this helped, and good luck! by Jenniferh9309 (Tue 14th Jul 2020 5:58pm)
  • Thank you! Congrats on going to uni :) I totally get not wanting to share essential spaces! I'm really similar, I despise people touching my dishes. Unfortunately I do really think that for GCU, unless you commute from Paisley or Springburn (both aren't very nice areas, imo, but I've never lived in either of them) prices are a bit high for individual flats. For example, I work 2 days a week and get £475 a month in student loan and I still struggled a little - especially during summer! To give you an idea of flat prices, I live in a 3 bedroom flat in Govanhill and we have a bedroom going up for rent soon that will cost £350 a month with an en-suite. GCU and UWS are both respected universities and they don't have the same snobbery (bit of a mean word, but best I could think of) that Glasgow University does. I also know that GCU has a really good social scene as far as societies, etc. My best friend went to GCU to do business studies and she loved it. My ex-boyfriend went to UWS to do computer science and he liked it. As far as reputations I'd say they're both on par with each other :) by Jenniferh9309 (Tue 14th Jul 2020 8:56pm)
  • Used to work there - they only have 4 beers, all bottled, and nothing on tap. Good food though. by Jenniferh9309 (Sat 25th Jul 2020 11:06pm)

  • We did think of that but not sure if it's open and running due to covid! Will have a walk by tomorrow though, thanks for the idea :) by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 10th Jan 2021 3:58pm)
  • Thank you, that's such good news! by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 10th Jan 2021 4:24pm)
  • Hey! It's my post you linked. They're the worst!! I went and left a bad review on their google as well and they claimed to never have heard of me. Said that my story was clearly a lie. Absolute joke of a company and should be shut down. by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 17th Jan 2021 10:56pm)
  • Hey, thank you! It was a year and a half ago now but if anyone else reports them I'll jump in with my story to add weight to the fact they shouldn't be in business. by Jenniferh9309 (Sun 17th Jan 2021 11:23pm)
  • I work at the coffee shop I think you're talking about. If it helps, about 50 - 60% of the staff started working after November, so we're really keen to stay open as none of us would get furloughed. But I get your point. Plus the number of people who refuse to wear a mask when talking to me is ridicuous. I don't care if you're outside? You're less than a metre away from my face lol by Jenniferh9309 (Wed 3rd Feb 2021 2:34pm)
  • Hilarious. My last landlord was a 21 year old. That's not hard work, it's privilege. by Jenniferh9309 (Tue 30th Mar 2021 6:27pm)
  • If you do go down there, take a wander to snuff mill bridge, will be good for some pictures! Only a 5 min walk away 😁 by Jenniferh9309 (Sat 30th Jul 2022 3:51pm)
  • In the same area - me and my partner are £475 for a one bedroom in Battlefield. We got reeeeally lucky with this flat. by Jenniferh9309 (Sat 10th Jun 2023 11:28am)
  • No, but close! Holmlea Road. It was also £425 when we moved in and only gone up by £50 in the 3 years since! by Jenniferh9309 (Sat 10th Jun 2023 11:38am)
