  • Also budget dependent, but Strathberry are a high end uk based handbag company. I know they sell online, and in a bag/scarf shop on the royal mile in Edinburgh (it’s on a corner near where the pedestrian section to the castle starts) if you wanted to see them in person. by LisTigue (Sat 14th Nov 2020 9:54pm)
  • There are a couple of open big recycling centres around the city, you’d need to have a car though to get to one. The one I go to is in Queenslie, but if you look up the Glasgow council website you should find more! They’ll also take glass, garden waste, electrical, batteries etc. by LisTigue (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 9:30pm)
  • There are a couple of co-working spaces in the city that might be able to give you a meeting room, I don’t know the names off the top of my head but I think there’s some above the chinese on Bath street and also on the street behind H&M, where the Smoke restaurant used to be. Also, I think there are little music practice rooms for rent in the Mitchell library that would be soundproof if you can get one. I hope you find what you need! by LisTigue (Sun 20th Jun 2021 9:00am)
  • Thanks for the clarification, I’d never used the space in the Mitchell myself so I wasn’t sure how it worked! by LisTigue (Sun 20th Jun 2021 10:59am)
  • Not sure if they’re on the south side, but we’re east (Shettleston/tollcross) and are with Easy Let and Maintenance. They’ve been excellent, easy to get someone on the phone, maintenance out the same day or next day at the latest, good with keeping in touch regarding changes for Covid etc. Might be worth seeing if they do south side too. by LisTigue (Fri 25th Jun 2021 7:51pm)
  • I’m a fan of the coffee in Cafe Wander on George Street. There’s also Laboratorio Espresso on West Nile street behind the H&M building) that does lovely coffee too. by LisTigue (Wed 30th Jun 2021 12:28pm)
  • I was cited about a month ago, the night I rang, the message was up to date and specified the court number that was on my latter. I checked around 6:30 pm so maybe try again now, it might be updated. If it’s not, call at 9am tomorrow morning and say that you were cited but couldn’t check the message, they’ll put you through to someone that deals with the jurors (I had to do it because I missed a call on one of the days and I got a call back in about 3 mins). If they say you’re needed, you’ll be called in the morning (before midday) and they’ll ask if you’re still available to serve and if you’ve had Covid symptoms etc. They’ll then say to look out for a call between 2 and 5 pm. If you don’t here from anyone between then, call the message number again after 5 and it’s basically the same process again. On the third day of my citation the message for my court number was that my citation was over and I didn’t need to call again, so I never had to go to a trial. That was pretty quick, I know someone that had to call every day for a full week before they were told they weren’t needed. Let me know if you need more info! by LisTigue (Sun 4th Jul 2021 6:46pm)
  • How strange, maybe they are understaffed at the moment! Hope it all goes well and you’re I and out quickly! by LisTigue (Mon 5th Jul 2021 9:50pm)
  • I was in over the weekend and it still looks shut down! Not sure if it’ll be reopening at all. by LisTigue (Tue 20th Jul 2021 3:46pm)
  • I might come along! What name is it booked under? Might be worth adding that to the post :) by LisTigue (Thu 22nd Jul 2021 3:22pm)
  • I didn’t go to uni in Glasgow so I’ll leave the specific advice to others. But I did work in the international students office at my undergrad Uni. Have you contacted them? We used to have a database of students looking for housing options or roommates (or for linking with someone doing the same course), and would link incoming students with others to help them find housing and navigate the new Uni together. Maybe U of G has something similar. by LisTigue (Thu 19th Aug 2021 2:18pm)
  • Fantastic, thanks a mil! With a Luton it’ll definitely only be one trip, I’ll give them a call. by LisTigue (Wed 25th Aug 2021 6:42pm)
  • Not sure what money is like for you at the moment but maybe a hot desk in a coworking space might be your best bet. I’ve seen this one be recommended here before: https://workclockwise.co.uk/locations/glasgow/ by LisTigue (Tue 7th Sep 2021 6:47am)
  • I asked the same thing about a month ago and got the following recommendation: “Used N.Q fast and cheap removal recently for a flat move. Name doesn't sound great, but they were careful and considerate. 07535322076 or John.removal@yahoo.co.uk” I’d also recommend them, they were excellent. Spot on time, had their own wrap to wrap furniture (we had done most of it ourselves but they finished it off), no damages, and really nice lads in general as well. We got them on fairly short notice too, about 10 days before hand. Paid in cash, have a list of what you want to move because the price is based on the volume of stuff. We ended up having to pay a little extra on the day as we had more than what we had said on the phone but I wasn’t unreasonable. by LisTigue (Thu 7th Oct 2021 6:19pm)
  • So ours ended up being about £350, that was for a fully furnished 2 bed flat (everything except the fridge and oven basically) over to a storage unit (20 mins drive from the flat), unpacked into the storage unit, then down to my MILs 20 mins away from there again, a bedroom and dining rooms worth of furniture again, then back to the storage unit and unpacked for us again. It was a pretty big trip so I doubt yours will be as expensive, but honestly worth every penny. They have a Luton truck so they can do a full house in one trip. by LisTigue (Sat 9th Oct 2021 7:49am)
  • The payments reset in April, as that’s the start of the financial year. So it’s a set payment per month for 10 months, from April to Feb, for everybody, it’s not based on when you move in for 10 months after that. So you’re not paying 10 months of tax in 4 months, you’re just paying 4 months of the total. I feel like I’m not explaining it well so let me know if that doesn’t make sense! Also just as a heads up, I believe in Scotland it’s illegal now for a landlord to lock you into a long contract lease, all leases require a 1 month notice. So if you’re moving into a new place next year don’t get tricked into thinking you’ve to see out a full years lease! by LisTigue (Sat 9th Oct 2021 6:28pm)
  • You might be better posting to casualUK or askUK subreddits for a less biased answer… by LisTigue (Sun 10th Oct 2021 9:34am)
  • I used to attend one in Shettleston in the east end, called the Shettleston New Community Choir. I’ve moved now, but I really enjoyed it! The leader was really good (she ran somewhere in the region of 8-10 choirs, a mix of school and adult ones), the songs were fun and the group was really nice and friendly! I’m not sure if it’s back up and running yet from Covid but they have a Facebook page if you want to look them up. by LisTigue (Sat 16th Oct 2021 1:22pm)
  • I’ve booked in for Xsite in Glasgow for the antigen test, next Friday, results in 40 mins. It’s not in the airport though I don’t think, so you might need a car to get there, it was £50 so not the cheapest but most convenient for me! The company name is ExpressTest. Edit: for travelling to Ireland on the Saturday, didn’t mention that bit! by LisTigue (Sat 4th Dec 2021 2:38pm)
  • I know Bier Halle in town has a massive selection of foreign beers (I assume you’re talking about Victoria Bitter?), you might be able to buy some from them unopened if they have it in stock. Probably best to give them a ring first to see if they have it and if that’s something they do! by LisTigue (Sat 11th Dec 2021 11:33am)
  • I had a court citation as a witness during covid and it was all through letters in the post, with a phone number to call the day before regarding whether you were required. Tbh if it’s just a text I’d say it’s a scam message. by LisTigue (Sat 5th Feb 2022 1:38pm)
  • My now husband proposed with a £7 ring from topshop that turned my finger green, and it was perfect because he knew I wanted to pick my own one. If you’ve got a ring lined up, a decoy is the way to go (maybe try and secretly grab a ring she already owns?), just be sure to let her know after! 😂 by LisTigue (Thu 17th Feb 2022 7:58pm)
  • Done! Good luck :) by LisTigue (Thu 24th Mar 2022 4:03pm)
  • Maybe a voucher for her to go do something for herself? Get her nails done or a massage or something, or a cinema voucher, restaurant voucher, something that lets her have some “me” time while you take the child for the day/night if that’s possible? by LisTigue (Fri 25th Mar 2022 9:03am)
  • Ryanair send the same email asking you to be at the airport 3 hours before departure (for a Glasgow to dublin flight). It’s because of covid precautions, they have less staff running the security I think. Anyway, I’ve always gotten there at the normal 2hrs ish early and I’ve never spent longer than 15 minutes getting through security, and that was for flights at all times of the day. I think the emails are just to cover them so if it is busy and less lanes are open, it’s not their fault if you’re late. I suppose take it with a grain of salt, but also don’t arrive too close to the boarding time! by LisTigue (Tue 29th Mar 2022 10:33am)
  • As someone thats involved in hiring software devs and testers (and has been regularly over the last 2 years) I am always curious about where someone did a degree (mostly just to see what kind of fields folk start in before getting to us), but I’ve never let that impact my decision in going forward with a candidate. Not sure about the big banks and such (I’m part of a smaller Glasgow based company), someone else might have more insight into that aspect. by LisTigue (Wed 13th Apr 2022 5:58pm)
  • I used https://catconcern.co.uk when I was rehoming my cat a few years ago and they were great, if you haven’t tried them already! by LisTigue (Thu 14th Apr 2022 1:59pm)
  • If you go in the main door, and turn left, just opposite the little gift shop is the stairs or lift down. Toilets are under the stairs, cafe and library are straight ahead once you get down! by LisTigue (Sun 1st May 2022 10:44pm)
  • This is the bus to take: https://www.firstbus.co.uk/greater-glasgow/routes-and-maps/glasgow-airport-express It goes every 30 mins, starting at 5am until midnight. It’s purple, and right outside the terminal building, you can’t miss it! by LisTigue (Wed 11th May 2022 9:28pm)
  • There’s a Co working space called Space on the street behind H&M (west George street?) that’s really nice, it’s got a wee cafe, meeting rooms and an open plan work area. I don’t know how affordable it is as I was there as part of a work project, but might be worth a look: https://www.spacesworks.com/glasgow/west-george-street/?utm_source=yext_places_gmb&utm_medium=places&utm_campaign=yext_traffic&utm_content=4870 Edit: also the Mitchell library has those sort of pods in the main cafe bit downstairs, they’re free to use! by LisTigue (Wed 25th May 2022 7:51pm)
  • I’ll second Store First in Linwood. Half price for the first 2-3 months, and you get 10% off if you pay for 3 months upfront, 20% off if you pay 6 months upfront. by LisTigue (Wed 8th Jun 2022 8:22pm)
  • Savers, or boots would sell most of those. by LisTigue (Sat 11th Jun 2022 10:27am)
  • ICafe in the merchant city is open til 9, and has good coffee! Edit: also on Ingram street btw by LisTigue (Sat 25th Jun 2022 10:05am)
  • Oh, I didn’t know that, never mind then! by LisTigue (Sat 25th Jun 2022 10:30am)
  • If you need them asap, I know StoreFirst in Linwood sell them out of their office. So do Kangaroo Storage (in Carntyne/Shettleston, may have other locations). Easiest way to find out is ring a few long term places and find out what they sell! by LisTigue (Wed 7th Sep 2022 8:01pm)
  • Tattoo artists prices will vary wildly based on lots of factors, like their experience, the tattoo size, complexity, number of colours, number of sessions it’ll take etc. The easiest way to find out would be to email them with a description of what you want (with images if you have any) and they will get back to you. I don’t have a lot of tattoo experience (only got a couple myself) but that’s been my experience so far. Someone else may weigh in with specific experience with that studio though and correct me! by LisTigue (Sun 16th Oct 2022 10:12pm)
  • I’m not sure how it works per company, but I just checked ours yesterday (OVO) and we had just the £66 taken off for this month. Might be worth a call to see how Scottish power are handling it if there’s no info on their website. by LisTigue (Thu 20th Oct 2022 7:08am)
  • The Mitchel library (Charing cross) or the GOMA library (just off Buchanan street) both have scanners and printers. Not sure about the Mitchel but the Goma closes at 5pm. If the library doesn’t have a scanner available, download the app GeniusScan, which lets you scan a doc using your phone camera and then you can upload it to Google drive or email it to yourself. It’s free and very handy! by LisTigue (Sat 5th Nov 2022 11:49am)
  • According to my mother in law (from the Stirling area originally), the back of X means somewhere between 5 and 15 mins past the number. So for your example it would be about 10 past 3. I’ve been here for 5 years and I’ve only just asked 😂 by LisTigue (Wed 9th Nov 2022 8:39pm)
  • As a non-Scot, that makes more sense to me, like it’s the end of the hour, but apparently I’ve been interpreting it wrong! At least in the case of my MIL saying it to me! by LisTigue (Wed 9th Nov 2022 10:03pm)
  • I’m from Ireland! Moved over 5 years ago :) what kind of advice are you looking for? by LisTigue (Tue 15th Nov 2022 8:46pm)
  • maybe something with a Rennie Macintosh theme? My mum got some mugs from the wee tourist info centre near the necropolis and she loves them, but there are lots of places in town to get the same thing. In addition there’s those rainbow highland cows or stags you see everywhere, a cushion cover or something? In the Buchanan galleries there is a Scottish art shop on the top floor, with lots of handmade things from Scottish artists and designers. If you want consumables, there is always tablet, shortbread etc. you can buy lovely yarn from the Highlands and Islands if that’s something that suits. The hebredian (sp?) baker also has a new cookbook out I think, he’s quite good! There is a candle shop on Buchanan street that is Scottish made (I think it’s called Inis?) which is pricey but very nice. You could also get them a Glasgow warriors or Scottish rugby jersey if they watch rugby, my dad wears his all the time (in Ireland). Edited to fix fat finger spelling by LisTigue (Sat 26th Nov 2022 5:47pm)
  • The Merchant Voices choir have their Christmas concert on later this month in the city centre, Bath street I think! Might be worth a look at their website to see if the time suits. by LisTigue (Sun 4th Dec 2022 9:15pm)
  • Dog walking perhaps? There are websites now that you can sign up for (borrow my doggy being one off the top of my head) or else you could advertise on local Facebook groups etc. you could also look into pet sitting as well. by LisTigue (Sun 12th Mar 2023 7:06am)
  • Download the Olio app and see if anyone has free food near you. It’s an app for free exchange of food and other goods in your local community, and often some of the big supermarkets take part (volunteers collect their excess to distribute). You just need to message the poster to claim something! by LisTigue (Sat 1st Apr 2023 6:36am)
  • I’ve gone back to specsavers a month or more after getting mine and they’ve adjusted the legs and nose, no problem! They also give them a clean as well which is a bonus 👌🏻 I’m fairly sure most opticians would do the same! by LisTigue (Sat 8th Apr 2023 8:05pm)
  • Bibimbap near central has a separate gluten free menu! by LisTigue (Sun 25th Jun 2023 6:50pm)
  • Pinned at the top of the sub is a housing/accommodation megathread, might be more useful posting in there! Or hold off till tomorrow and be first in the July thread. by LisTigue (Fri 30th Jun 2023 3:44pm)
  • Supercuts in Buchanan galleries is fairly affordable for a dry cut,£25 or there abouts and they always done a good job for me, walk ins only though, so you have to stick your name on a wait list if there’s a queue. I think folks here have also said before that you can get cuts from trainees in college for pretty cheap, though you’d need to look up where to go for that! by LisTigue (Sat 1st Jul 2023 7:50am)
  • Most of the makeup counters in House of Fraser (Mac, Charlotte Tillbury etc) will do makeup lessons, you might have to pay for them but when I did it with Mac I got the price of the session back in a voucher to buy a product. John Lewis do free personal styling sessions, with no obligation to buy anything. They are two hour slots, and when booking you fill in a form outlining what you need from the session. I’ve done it three times for various reasons and it’s always been a lovely experience! by LisTigue (Mon 14th Aug 2023 10:24am)
