  • I was there over the weekend on Sat and Sun in the hottest part of the day and it was tolerable or not noticeable from where the flats were. I needed to check it for myself so drove up and did a half hour walk up the walkway and back. Only really once the wind picked up. I’m thinking if that’s what it’s like on the hottest days this year so far, so I’m leaning more towards giving it a go. New builds rarely come as nicely made and within my meagre budget. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 6th Jun 2021 9:06pm)
  • I thought so too but to hear people talk about the area I was having all sorts of second thoughts because of the thought of never being able to sit on the balcony or open my windows during a nice day. Bottom line I’m just looking that’s new-ish and safe and sound. In Glasgow. On a shoestring budget. (Yeah I know) by SkinnyFatSamurai (Mon 7th Jun 2021 12:29pm)
  • Yeah, was wary of the south-west winds and these flats are right in line with that. There was a good little breeze when I went on Sunday but of course that might just have been a ‘good’ day like you say. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Mon 7th Jun 2021 12:25pm)
  • Not sure if you’ll find something in Glasgow with the vibe you’re looking for. Previous shisha places become overrun with the Asian flavour of ned, driving up in their dads’ cars and mean-mugging everyone. Just isn’t the culture for that cafe style shisha here at this point. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Thu 10th Jun 2021 11:27am)
  • I must be the only person to have gotten a good experience from Arnold Clark. They gave me the price I wanted for two cars, after I had done my research. I just gave them the price I wanted and said that was what I wanted to get the deal done. Then again I always go PCP. Beats negotiating with private sellers or going to a smaller dealership where the risks of getting sold a lemon have to be greater due to decreased buying power/stock, no? by SkinnyFatSamurai (Fri 20th Aug 2021 10:06pm)
  • That sounds insane man, hope it gets sorted soon. Drinking water is one of those things you just take for granted until it’s not available anymore. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sat 25th Sep 2021 2:54pm)

  • More marketplaces, independent shops and low/no rents. These big companies that hold on to storefronts are what’s led to every shopping street in Glasgow being full and repetitive. They need to be squeezed into giving them up. We need smaller companies, one-off places (with quality goods mind) to be encourage and facilitated. But whatever happens, no more bars, clubs or continued focus on alcohol being the centre of entertainment. One of the best things to happen to Glasgow (imho) is the move away from that type of thing. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 12th Dec 2021 1:07pm)

  • There isn’t one sadly, and I’m loathe to create one lest I become responsible for it, which I would inevitably allow to happen. Then I’m *that* guy, the neighbourhood watch guy. So I’ll of course complain, but do so like decent human beings - in private and with no unnecessary interaction with my neighbours. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Thu 23rd Dec 2021 8:07pm)

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy typically costs anywhere between 40 and 75 depending on the qualifications. My wife’s a CBT therapist and charges 50. For free sessions (usually with students) contact organisations like Wellbeing Scotland, and for qualified sessions consult directories like Psychology Today and find someone who you think fits the bill. Most offer free consultations before you commit. If you go NHS you’ll be waiting some time. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Tue 28th Dec 2021 10:11pm)
  • My wife’s a therapist. NHS is difficult due to the waiting list. Private sessions can be expensive but there are people out there that can help you through. The money barrier is the big one though, it’s a major investment and some people simply don’t have the funds to commit to £40-50 for CBT or similar therapies. From what I’ve understood of the area, there are a great many talented and committed people working in the space though. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Wed 26th Jan 2022 6:49pm)

  • It’s the chicken and egg scenario for me. - people don’t go to shops because they think they’re closed at 6pm onwards - shops don’t see footfall after 6 so don’t extend opening hours due to profitability concerns What would need to happen would be a culture shift for city centre shops and for that to filter through to the population. Unfortunately I don’t see any stores taking the short term hit on finances to make that happen. My wife is from abroad and had the same reaction as the OP. To people from Asia it makes all the sense in the world to have shops open late, so you can go out after work and into the late night. Over there, you come home from work, rest a bit then head back out again. However, they don’t have the pub/bar/drinking culture they have here. I’ve had multiple people from abroad and who are born here say they won’t go near the city centre and prefer malls in the evenings and later on weekends because they just don’t want to deal with people in and out of bars/pubs. Malls are different - they should be open later than even now. Shifts, fair hourly salaries for unsociable hours and strong advertising for later opening hours and free parking. But of course, companies don’t want to pay their retail staff more than they have to. Contrast to areas in Asia where there will be a queue of young people for any retail job on low salaries, with no welfare system to help them. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Thu 26th May 2022 2:38pm)

  • I’m biased as a Muslim but the less alcohol consumption in public spaces the better. I see no justification at all for drinking any alcohol on public transport. It can wait till you get off and get to where you’re going. If it’s a sporting event, and you can’t drink at the venue, and you’re thinking “but how will I drink alcohol for the football/rugby??”, you need to examine your own relationship between sport and bevvy. If you can’t enjoy sport without drink, are you really a fan of the sport or just the excuse to get drunk and act the fool. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 24th Jul 2022 12:57pm)
  • It would appear the majority aren’t able to make this distinction. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 24th Jul 2022 2:16pm)
  • Like I said I know mine is a biased opinion. I’ve debated with too many people at work and in social occasions swearing up and down that you can’t enjoy anything from football to boxing and in between without drink. They consider it an integral part of the experience - drinking before, on the way to and during events. Outside of my real life, you’ve seen the reaction to the World Cup in Qatar and the big question of ‘what about alcohol’. On the main topic - why the need to drink on public transport at all? Can it not wait? What’s the rush? by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 24th Jul 2022 2:26pm)
  • Of course, but there are many who feel it’s a requirement, not an extra that you could do without. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 24th Jul 2022 2:58pm)
  • Surely the decision of whether to allow alcohol in a space is up to the company that owns it. If Scotrail was privately owned would there be the same issue? by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 24th Jul 2022 3:57pm)
  • Same companies repackaged over and over again. - Door to door sales masked as ‘face to face marketing’. - 100% commission salary masked as ‘unlimited earning potential’. Oh and they don’t tell you they don’t deduct tax/NI so the poor people who last long enough to earn above the threshold have to register as self-employed and do a return themselves. - sell a certain amount per week and become a ‘leader’, recruit others to be your underlings and have them sell enough and you become a ‘captain’ or ‘crew leader’. - then eventually you set up a shop doing the same thing yourself at a random office space. - all the earnings kick upstairs to the parent company. - regular indoctrination meetings and conferences. Surprised they haven’t been investigated (the Cobra/APCO group is what I remember them being referred to during my unfortunate few months at one of these places). by SkinnyFatSamurai (Tue 26th Jul 2022 4:52pm)
  • Never pre-book, just request one at the time. Uber doesn’t have drivers accepting jobs until the pick-up time in my experience. It doesn’t even start searching until just before. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sat 30th Jul 2022 10:48pm)
  • You just have to accept that a certain % of humans are mentally deficient arseholes, who you occasionally encounter despite efforts to avoid. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sat 30th Jul 2022 10:57pm)
  • I’ve seen the opposite tbh. Covid hit the city centre hard but as for elsewhere I’ve seen widespread regeneration - new housing schemes and retail parks especially in the East End. South side has new cafes, independent places and restaurants. The UofG area is taking shape and Byres Road is still heaving. There’s two things declining - high street retail stores due to stupid rents and pubs/bars. Both good things imo - the landlords need to sell up or have their property seized because of non-occupancy, and drinking culture reducing due to people in gen x and z moving away from that as a pastime. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 7th Aug 2022 11:29am)

  • What I wouldn’t give for a good old fashioned grid system. Roundabouts are a plague and idiots who don’t know when to wait or go, or how to stay in lane, or indicate, are a constant source of stress when driving. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Tue 1st Nov 2022 11:29am)
  • I don’t remember it being this bad when younger. Maybe one for people with deeper knowledge on road works - but is planned obsolescence something that could be behind this? User cheaper materials, knowing the council will have you back for repeat business later? Maybe a bit too conspiratorial. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sat 7th Jan 2023 11:34am)
  • Planned obsolescence. Keep the gravy train running. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 7th May 2023 5:38pm)
  • Poor/cheaper materials, designed to fail quickly. Repeat contracts. The source of this theory: anecdotal memories of growing up in Glasgow and never seeing roads fail this miserably, so quickly, as has been the case in recent times - with newly laid intersections or repairs lasting a few months to a year before showing damage. Happy to be proven wrong by facts and data though. by SkinnyFatSamurai (Sun 7th May 2023 6:41pm)
