  • There was an increase in security on campus after a series of rapes in October/November - not sure if overall incidence has been growing, though. That said, it was like that when I was a student in the early 2010s, too. Every year the Uni gets an influx of thousands of new students, and it felt like every year there'd be new horror stories coming out of at least one, if not several, of the student accomodations. by _Cicero (Sun 9th Feb 2020 5:02pm)
  • Defund != Abolish by _Cicero (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:10pm)
  • As far as I'm aware - because I personally haven't heard anyone propose defunding Police Scotland - the Defund the Police slogan is in relation to US police depts, many of which are wildly overfunded to the point of being able to purchase armoured personnel carriers from the US military. These are people who want money redirected towards community programs. Even the places that have 'abolished' their police forces, like Camden, NJ, replaced them with organisations that basically are police depts but built around a different work culture that encourages community policing. That's what they're trying to do in Minneapolis, as I understand it. Whomever you heard say that on the radio sounds like an idiot who's failed to grasp why black communities *in the US* want to defund their local police, because they're actually replacing them with bodies that look more like Police Scotland. by _Cicero (Fri 19th Jun 2020 9:24pm)
  • Aye, done. Good luck with your dissertation, it's an interesting topic! by _Cicero (Thu 24th Mar 2022 3:16pm)
  • This honest-to-God sounds like someone with psychosis. They need help. by _Cicero (Sat 16th Apr 2022 1:00am)
  • The campaign has been dead around here. I've had two leaflets, and one was a generic Labour one talking about stuff they'd do at Holyrood/Westminster... Probably vote Green 1, then in order of who I dislike the least. by _Cicero (Mon 2nd May 2022 9:09pm)
  • Wasn't the alternative (a Labour run admin) going to be headed by a corrupt landlord who was a core part of the Labour group that was responsible for e.g. the pay disputes (never mind longer term degredation, and sowing the seeds of most major problems the city has)? Not a fan of Aitken, but it seems like Glasgow's politics are custom built to fuck the city no matter what... by _Cicero (Tue 17th May 2022 8:29pm)
  • **TL;DR**: The funding model for Scottish Universities forces them to invest in attracting international students, which as EU applications have dropped off has led to a focus on markets like China. It also has other harmful effects, incentivising Universities to constantly cut costs and invest in areas other than education and research. Universities in Scotland are dependent on international students to make ends meet. They get £1,820 p/a in funding from Scot Gov for each Scottish undergraduate. Keep in mind that funding hasn't changed since the new system was introduced by the SNP in 2007 - since then prices (per the [CPI](https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/inflationandpriceindices/timeseries/l522/mm23)) have increased by around 38%. So the funding Universities get for Scottish students has rapidly fallen in real terms. rUK students pay £27,750 over the lifetime of their degree - so for four year, that ends up being around £6,937 p/a. International students pay substantially more. At GSoA, for example, an international undergrad will pay £20,400 in 2022/23. International students in Glasgow's College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences' clinical programmes will be paying £52,000 in the coming year. As I understand it, Universities in Scotland make substantial losses on home students, and might break even on rUK students. But they're heavily dependent on international students and yes, that means significant investment in getting students in from overseas. As the number of EU student applications has declined, the focus has had to move to further afield (e.g. China). There are other knock-on effects of this system, including enormous uncertainty over how much income a University (especially outwith Scotland's ancient / Russell Group Unis) can expect each year. So they're constantly looking to cut costs or find other ways to preserve value (investing in real estate). by _Cicero (Mon 6th Jun 2022 2:54pm)
  • I don't think it's clear whether they can, and that's the problem: uncertainty. Post-Brexit we've had two academic years during a pandemic. That might become clearer as time goes on, but the fundamental uncertainty from year-to-year remains, and it'd be foolish for a uni to invest on the assumption that they'll get the same volume of international student next year as they had this year. by _Cicero (Mon 6th Jun 2022 3:21pm)
  • They actually have quotas setting a cap on how many Scottish students can enrol each year, based on the funding Scot Gov is making available. But as I understand it, they typically max these out. Most (maybe all) Scottish Unis have different tracks for Scottish and non-Scottish students, will max out their quotas on home students and aim to maximise (within capacity) the non-home students they recruit. by _Cicero (Mon 6th Jun 2022 3:26pm)

  • He's not a wank because he's besuited, he's a wank because he's not appropriately keeping his dogs under control and complaining about other people's dogs merely barking when he won't do the basics to keep his under control. Like I said, if your dog has good recall and will follow your instructions, then fine. Otherwise, keep it on a lead. by _Cicero (Tue 21st Jun 2022 2:06pm)
  • Read the full post mate, I'm not asking people who can keep their dogs under control without the use of a lead to use a lead anyway. by _Cicero (Tue 21st Jun 2022 8:48pm)
  • Her problem isn't so much that she's unfriendly as she's anxious after being attacked twice as a puppy. Introduced properly she's perfectly fine, run up behind her and yeah, she'll bark. It's her telling your dog she's not comfortable with it. Some of the folks commenting in this thread seem to think that a dog barking - i.e. communicating - is worse than a dog not being under its owner's control and causing issues. If someone I don't know runs up behind me and startles me I'm going to have something to say about it, too. by _Cicero (Tue 21st Jun 2022 8:53pm)
