  • Well GU barely provides anything for the students in their halls, they needed to get volunteers to provide the support they need. (Not that we pay tuition and rent to be here lol!) by _kar00n (Fri 2nd Oct 2020 11:47am)

  • I live in West End and there are 2 university owned and 2 private student accommodations. There are definitely parties every other day, lots of cabs and even the 'ice cream vans'. It's heartbreaking to see that people are dying in this pandemic and some people still have the audacity to be this selfish and prioritise their social life over the public health and safety. (NB it's not like you'll be hanging out with your fresher friends for the rest of your life... It's definitely worth risking it!) by _kar00n (Fri 30th Oct 2020 10:33pm)
  • Walking along the Clyde around the city centre to the south of West End is quite exciting, you'll get to watch the calm river and people enjoying their time, whether just casually sitting down, having a chat, eating a sandwich or trying BMX. There is a good mix of the calm nature and vibrant people of Glasgow. by _kar00n (Sun 1st Nov 2020 3:45am)

  • For my address they collect general waste on Sundays which is incorrect (it's on Tuesdays), no recycling mentioned and they still collect food waste (they got rid of the grey bin last year) by _kar00n (Thu 22nd Jul 2021 7:03pm)
  • Not sure if it's still a thing but Glasgow university has sports membership available to public, including swimming lessons by _kar00n (Mon 26th Jul 2021 12:56am)
  • In my first year at uni, I lived in a student halls which was quite far from the main campus. It's supposed to take about 30 mins but I usually took 45 mins to 1.5h because the buses were so inconsistent. The accommodation was catered and breakfasts start at 7.45am, but to make it to 9am lecture we would have to leave at 7.50am. We had to choose between making it to the lecture on time and to have get the food we paid for. We got a free annual bus pass from the university but I still think it wasn't worth it. by _kar00n (Mon 4th Oct 2021 4:50pm)

  • I've taken a few boxes on board even on flights via China and the US, where they have extra strict security measures going on. Just make pray that TSA staff won't steal the treat! Also, bringing safety food is a very good idea. There are loads of things you don't need to bring with you because you can buy them when you get to the destination. But tea cakes? Hmm. • Consistently inconsistent and we have one of the most expensive bus networks in Britain. They've finally implemented the U22 travel scheme but I don't qualify for that so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ by _kar00n (Mon 31st Oct 2022 12:31am)
  • Still doesn't justify the further decline in bus services imo. Apologies in advance if it's off-topic. by _kar00n (Sat 19th Nov 2022 8:05pm)
  • What pisses me off is the fact Edinburgh is doing so much better than Glasgow in terms of infrastructure. I get that Glasgow is much larger in area and population - but it really shows that the local authority doesn't care enough about the problem with public transport system. by _kar00n (Sun 20th Nov 2022 5:02pm)
  • I've approached an ice cream van in Maryhill in the summer of 2018 and asked for an ice cream and the ice cream man responded with "WHAT ICE CREAM" so I don't think any ice cream was available. I didn't ask him if he was selling anything else it's not confirmed whether he was selling drugs, though... by _kar00n (Sun 20th Nov 2022 5:05pm)

  • So far every single experience I've had to deal with South Lanarkshire Council has been a disappointing one... My block of flats suddenly got a blue bin and a grey one for recycling recently but they don't seem to be getting cleared at all. Also as for the green bin, even if my landlord agrees to get a bin for me, I'm not sure an addition of just one 240L will actually help with the situation at all - so yeah either way I have to live next to a pile of rubbish. Can't wait to see how it'll get worse with the smell in summer... by _kar00n (Tue 17th Jan 2023 6:45pm)

  • I don't think the contract is fixed-term. My concern is that tenant change might be considered the start of a new lease, hence the landlord reviewing the rent. by _kar00n (Thu 1st Jun 2023 8:53am)
  • Yes, apologies for the vague wording. Friend A has been living in the flat and plans to stay. His flatmate, friend B has been living there too and is leaving. I am moving into the flat as friend B leaves. Is the change of tenant considered a start of new lease or just an adjustment to the ongoing contract? by _kar00n (Thu 1st Jun 2023 8:52am)

  • I agree that it is not a bad deal even if we end up paying £1200 pcm. I am just wondering if the percentage of the increase is legally acceptable and whether it is negotiating for a lower rate of increase. by _kar00n (Thu 1st Jun 2023 1:54pm)
  • It seems to be the case that the cap does not apply to my case. _Tenancies which are not covered by the rent cap:_ _..._ _- new tenancies – you can set the rent for any new tenancy and are allowed to put the rent up between one tenant moving out and the next tenant moving in. This may include some joint tenancies where some tenants are moving out and others are remaining in the property, but only where a new tenancy is being created._ Source: https://www.mygov.scot/rent-cap-landlords/tenancies-covered-by-the-cap by _kar00n (Thu 1st Jun 2023 1:57pm)

  • My guess is that they would've opted to pay for private health insurance, instead of the NHS. IIRC international students are required to pay for the NHS as part of their visa application and it's £940 to cover 2 years. Overall, OP would've had to pay just NHS or NHS + private. by _kar00n (Tue 14th Nov 2023 8:39pm)

  • I grew up in central cities overseas, have been in Glasgow for a few years and occasionally visit London. Things are definitely a lot cheaper and it is very quiet here than in London. Transport isn't as good here - buses don't always turn up (let alone on time) and it is one of the most expensive bus services in Britain iirc. Trains can get cancelled abruptly. We have a little subway system which is cheaper than the bus, but the areas covered by the subway are convenient enough that you don't really need it. The renting market has become extremely competitive for tenants in recent years. In terms of safety - it really depends. I think it can be dangerous if you're at the wrong place, at the wrong time wearing the wrong colour (there are 2 football teams and the crowd can get rather excited in public sometimes). by _kar00n (Mon 11th Dec 2023 10:21pm)
