  • I think you're probably talking about the little development (Admiral's Gate) at the end of the street. Used to live at 43 Minerva Way facing the expressway and clyde. Definitely no noise problems inside the flat, they're all double glazed, and wasn't even that noisy out on the balcony because it's so high above the road. Decent flats as well, would recommend it! by d__ach (Sun 19th Apr 2020 1:22pm)
  • Fire in my building beside Mitchell Library. Everyone okay but been outside since 4am. Great start to the day. by d__ach (Wed 29th Apr 2020 7:56am)
  • DELETED Apologies, late getting to this. It was the Dorset Square block between Dorset st/Cleveland st/Kent rd and affected flats entered through door 10 Dorset Square. Hope this wasn’t yours as there does seem to be a few empty flats right now. Fire brigade kicked our door through for no reason, raging. by d__ach (Wed 29th Apr 2020 3:33pm)
  • Agreed. I commute the opposite way, that road is a nightmare , can take 2 hours each way at rush hour and doesn't look any better on the other side. However, with everything right now, I suggest you stay put for now and only move once it's confirmed when your classes will start in people. It'll be hard to meet new people and enjoy Glasgow before things are back to normal i.e. the same time classes would start properly again. by d__ach (Wed 13th May 2020 11:00am)

  • No idea this was illegal, have done it twice now and worked fine to be fair (Fineholm and Western Lettings), but we went ahead with the flat so no experience of backing out and asking for the money back. After experience renting down south where they have real fees that don't get taken off the deposit , this wasn't too bad really. by d__ach (Mon 13th Jul 2020 11:10am)

  • I’m in a similar situation and although I haven’t got in touch yet I believe you get 25% discount so have to pay 75% of full annual amount. I was planning to just call them up but I suppose they’ll be asking for evidence so may need to email/post something over to them by d__ach (Sat 25th Jul 2020 4:12pm)

  • Went to brewdog west end last night for vegan burgers which worked with their vegan mondays deal. Got 2 burgers and chips for £7 total! Booked in advance, and didn't seem overly cramped, so great experience. Paesano are using an app for queueing where you need to get to the restaurant within 10 minutes when your turn comes. Seems like it'd work quite well by d__ach (Tue 4th Aug 2020 10:30am)

  • Once the ticket price is over £10 it doesn't matter if it's peak or off peak, you still get the discount. Pre-covid I did this commute most weekdays with a railcard and it's always worked.. Prices are always going up but it's currently £17.45 return with a railcard at peak time I believe. OP, previously I was living at charing cross, and now the west end, which works well as the trains there go directly to queen street to change to the fast train to Edinburgh, or you can take the slow one directly to Edinburgh without having to change. This is all included into the same ticket price you pay from Queen street anyway and is significantly quicker/easier than walking or cycling IMO. by d__ach (Thu 27th Aug 2020 8:19am)
  • Personally I didn't mind the commute 4 days-a-week pre-covid, always got a seat no problem and surprisingly it's a very reliable service, the price was the only downside but I took the hit because I don't care to live in Edinburgh. Now I've been WFH for 5 months, I can't see myself going back to more than 2 days a week commuting, but that's more because it's hard to justify the cost if I clearly don't NEED to be in the office. I do strangely miss the time pre and post work on the commute to wake up/unwind. Definitely think that charing cross/west end is much better call to live than southside for OP, although you'll definitely pay a bit more rent. City centre is a bit cheaper than west end but more expensive than charing cross, charing cross area might be best of both worlds as you can get to the southside on the train, can walk to the west end and close to train stations by d__ach (Thu 27th Aug 2020 8:29am)

  • Got a letter in the door from Scottish Water yesterday saying next week I may lose the water supply for a few hours due to the construction works on the corner of Hyndland Ave and Partickhill Road. This is G11 too but haven't noticed loss of water ourselves, probably unrelated by d__ach (Fri 25th Sep 2020 9:58am)

  • I'm part of phase 3 trials for the Novavax vaccine (not published any results yet) and I'm pretty certain I've not had the placebo. But no, not been offered the Pfizer one cos I'm too young. by d__ach (Tue 8th Dec 2020 4:49pm)
  • haha yeah they obviously gave me no indication whatsoever but had similar side effects 24 hours after booster that I'd had when getting yellow fever and hep b vaccines last year. the placebo for this trial is saline solution so would expect zero side effects if I had that. no idea of efficacy results yet so who knows if it's actually protecting me! by d__ach (Tue 8th Dec 2020 5:25pm)
  • I doubt it, certainly it is saline across the UK. For Oxford vaccine it’s meningitis I believe by d__ach (Tue 8th Dec 2020 9:16pm)

The parking near the supermarket is still fairly busy as you'd imagine. Used it for learner practise the other week, pre-frost, which worked well although not much space to get up to third gear if that's what you need. Drive safe! by d__ach (Fri 8th Jan 2021 12:01pm)

Yes you can. However, for all journeys made between 4:30am and 10:00am Monday to Friday a minimum fare of £12 is payable. There is no minimum fare when you travel at weekends, on Public Holidays, or during July and August. by d__ach (Tue 30th Mar 2021 4:11pm)
  • Lived there for 4 months pre-lockdown and 3 months in lockdown. Would tend to agree with calling it a no-mans land. Not city centre, not west end, but it's very close to both. It was pretty handy having the library just there but without a car the closest big-ish supermarket is Tesco Metro on Sauchiehall St (although i think Lidl has opened in Finnieston now). We eventually got bored of only having Kelvingrove park as a green space nearby and had to move for our sanity. Pretty quiet area though if you want to be near town and much less unsavoury characters. Let me know if you've got any specific questions! by d__ach (Tue 6th Apr 2021 1:49pm)
  • Had the exact same experience, is it sad it gives me a buzz when they empty it? by d__ach (Tue 6th Apr 2021 4:39pm)
  • I had to make the same decision and went the opposite way. Partly selfishly as I think I may have already got the vaccine due to the side effects. Fair play to you, they seemed kind of desperate for willing participants. by d__ach (Fri 9th Apr 2021 11:25am)
  • I hadn't considered the vaccine passport cos I'm just hoping it's not a thing tbh but good shout. I mostly cba'd with the extra appointments. by d__ach (Fri 9th Apr 2021 2:44pm)

  • Got my vaccine appointment last night after being on the novavax trial. Waiting now to be 'unblinded' i.e. told whether I got the placebo or real thing! by d__ach (Wed 9th Jun 2021 8:38am)
  • Yeah, not a big fan of needles so could do without more jabs. Expecting an email back soon as I may need to cancel the vaccine appointment by d__ach (Wed 9th Jun 2021 10:05am)
  • Phase 3, which started in the UK in November by d__ach (Wed 9th Jun 2021 4:51pm)
  • yeah sounds like they drafted more people in. so you were told you definitely got the novavax vaccine? the reason they may have said phase 3 trials have no placebo is because they started a cross study where all original participants were given the opposite of what they were originally given so ensure everyone gets a vaccine from the trial without having to unblind. by d__ach (Wed 9th Jun 2021 10:10pm)
  • Nice one! What's the film and what were you credited with? by d__ach (Tue 15th Jun 2021 8:44am)

  • I used to live 5 minutes from charing cross station and used to always change at Queen St for the express as it was faster and more comfortable. From my experience, pre and post lockdowns you will always got a seat at 7:45/8. Bus is much cheaper if you're trying to save but takes 2 hours in the traffic sometimes. It depends where exactly you want to get to as well, the bus dropped me right outside my office if I was feeling lazy, but was 15 minute walk from both Haymarket and Waverley. Good luck with the new job! by d__ach (Tue 21st Sep 2021 10:23am)
  • I genuinely enjoy the commute and maybe I’ve been lucky but never had a single significant delay or cancellation. They’ve now got the e-tickets on trainline for the journey so you don’t even need to go to the machine or desk each day. Be careful though because not every barrier has a scanner for the QR code so need to spot the right one as you get close. Not sure if charing cross have installed a scanner yet but the guy at the desk will let you through. And as /u/beaker_72 says you don’t need a ticket for each train, a return will cover all full journeys to that destination. Also worth checking if you’re eligible for a railcard discount, my 26-30 railcard says me £9 everyday! by d__ach (Tue 21st Sep 2021 1:19pm)
  • Squinty Bridge? aye, half of it is shared for pedestrians, cyclists and authorised vehicles (buses), with the other side fenced off in UN-land by d__ach (Wed 3rd Nov 2021 3:21pm)
  • Thought it was pretty well run when I went in 2019. Lots of great bands and interesting venues you wouldn't usually get into. Most venues were quite busy but I got in to see everything I wanted to. The lack of information this year has put me off a bit too so haven't got a ticket yet but once I see set times and venues I'll likely get involved. by d__ach (Thu 4th Nov 2021 1:58pm)

Train is v expensive but can be justified with a railcard a couple times a week. pre-lockdown the m8 was gridlock and took 2 hours by bus, presumably the same by car. no idea what it’s like now though! by d__ach (Fri 3rd Dec 2021 11:25am)
