  • American living in Glasgow checking in. Go to Mother India for better Indian food than you've ever had in your life. You'll probably need to book in advance. Go to Stravaigin for good classical Scottish food. And try to get a steak pie for lunch somewhere! If you want a good brunch, Urban West, Singl-end, or the Steamie. On another note: bring a warm hat and sturdy walking shoes. This is a wet city, and I can't say much for the quality of the pavement. by janegrey1554 (Sat 8th Feb 2020 12:13am)
  • It's not that we get lots of snow and ice, it's just that there's an unpredictable and constant threat of light rain. When combined with pavement that is often in bad shape, it can get slippery quite easily and flimsy shoes will be destroyed. Enjoy Glasgow! by janegrey1554 (Sat 8th Feb 2020 9:21am)
  • Thanks for doing this. I'm due to deliver my first baby at QEUH next month, and not sure what to expect since everything is still changing daily. How separated are COVID patients from other wards? Do you know if birth partners are required to stay in the mother's room the entire time?. Stay safe! by janegrey1554 (Mon 6th Apr 2020 11:02am)
  • Chana masala, with garlic coriander naan and salad. by janegrey1554 (Wed 15th Apr 2020 9:44pm)
  • This sort of thing riles me so much. I always have to carefully watch what my puppy is trying to put in her mouth during walks because these idiots can't be bothered to find a bin. by janegrey1554 (Sat 16th May 2020 4:27pm)
  • American here. There are so many things. Glaswegians are very friendly and chatty, and as an East Coast American this made me feel stand off-ish at first. Walking on the left on the pavement took a solid six months to get used to. Letting dogs off their leads was a pleasant surprise. The Indian food here is world class, too. To get the quality of Indian food here in America you'd have to go out for fine dining. And I love that Glasgow has greengrocers. Some things I'm still not used to are all the rubbish on the pavement and the fact that every other 20 year old girl seems to have an obviously fake orange spray tan. by janegrey1554 (Wed 27th May 2020 12:51pm)
  • It's true, Americans tend to be on either end of the friendliness spectrum! Mostly I think it's based on regional, cultural, and generational differences. by janegrey1554 (Wed 27th May 2020 2:55pm)
  • Maybe I didn't phrase that correctly. I meant that in comparison with friendly people I feel stand off-ish. I'm from DC, where you wouldn't just strike up a conversation with a stranger at a bar or on the metro. It can feel isolating eventually. by janegrey1554 (Thu 28th May 2020 8:18am)
  • I live in Anderston and had one mouse in October and one in January. After the January incident we had the council exterminator out to set traps and poison. We also found that the mice had gnawed entry points under the kitchen cabinets around the boiler pipes and plugged those up with steel wool. As much as I hate the creatures, I try to accept that the occasional mouse in an old tenement is a fact of life. by janegrey1554 (Fri 29th May 2020 9:50am)
  • Hello neighbour! I'm a few buildings down from you. by janegrey1554 (Tue 30th Jun 2020 6:50pm)
  • This is your answer. When I first moved to Glasgow from the US I was surprised that we couldn't arrange housing 2-3 months in advance, but that's how it works here. Flats are first come first served. You need to call instead of emailing and be willing to attend a viewing and take a decision on very short notice. by janegrey1554 (Mon 20th Jul 2020 11:03am)
  • Hello there! I'm a fellow American who moved to Glasgow for my husband's PhD. I'd recommend looking for a part-furnished or unfurnished flat if you want to bring the pets. A lot of letting agencies here just can't be bothered to check whether the landlord will allow pets and give a blanket ban. Or, try to rent directly from a landlord through Open Rent. We managed it by renting before we got a dog, being good tenants for a few months, and then asking nicely if we could get a dog. Secondly, one thing I found very frustrating when we moved was the inability to find a place to live in advance. It's really hard to find a letting agency willing to rent to you without an in-person viewing, so you may need to plan for an Airbnb for the first few weeks. And honestly, you might be more comfortable with this approach too. It can be hard to assess the state of a property over video, and there are plenty in bad condition. Lastly, I saw you also asking about utilities. Water is included in your council tax, which you won't have to pay on a student visa. Electricity and gas can be separate or combined, but actually are provided through privatised companies, not one state service provider. You can switch which provider you use for a better rate. Lastly, don't expect to be able to get Internet quickly. Often you will have a few weeks lead time between signing up for a service and actually getting a modem and Internet access. Also, just to warn you... the Mexican food is awful here. by janegrey1554 (Mon 17th Aug 2020 1:46pm)
  • Actually furnished apartments are really common here and even sometimes less expensive. I don't understand why at all, unless it's perhaps to accommodate the large student population that might not want to buy furniture. And we do have a small Latin American store, Lupe Pinto's! They have real dried chillies, masa harina, salsa, good tortillas and tortilla chips, and sometimes homemade guacamole. It's good enough that I can make Mexican food at home that's not quite the real thing, but satisfies my east coast palate. by janegrey1554 (Mon 17th Aug 2020 3:16pm)
  • American here! I can make you a pumpkin pie. by janegrey1554 (Wed 14th Oct 2020 9:35pm)
  • For what it's worth, I had a baby in May during full lockdown and my husband was still allowed in the labour room. Hopefully that's not changed. Good luck! by janegrey1554 (Sat 31st Oct 2020 4:27pm)
  • The council pest service is free. by janegrey1554 (Fri 13th Nov 2020 2:28pm)
  • Pawsitive Solutions was fantastic for us. We got our puppy in February and she finished getting her jabs just a day before we went into lockdown, so we had many of the same socialisation issues. By the time we could do a puppy class she was too old. by janegrey1554 (Mon 28th Dec 2020 3:16pm)
  • American from a major east coast city here. If you're from Oakland, you're going to think Glasgow is absurdly cheap. I've been here a few years and I still haven't quite gotten over how cheap the rent is. by janegrey1554 (Mon 28th Dec 2020 3:28pm)
  • I would recycle more if the bins in the close weren't full after one week. As it is, I keep a full bin of recycling inside waiting for collection day and take out as many bags as I can to the large bin, and GCC misses half the scheduled collections. by janegrey1554 (Sun 7th Mar 2021 8:09am)
  • You're right, I don't know why you're getting downvoted. The corn tortillas from supermarkets are all mixed with wheat flour and don't taste remotely the same as real corn tortillas. by janegrey1554 (Tue 9th Mar 2021 6:37pm)
  • The website is a joke. When I try to reset my password it just gives me "access denied." by janegrey1554 (Sat 20th Mar 2021 3:32pm)
  • My toddler managed to lose her brown stuffed bunny strolling around Kelvingrove Park today. If anyone happens to spot it could you send me a message? by janegrey1554 (Sun 23rd May 2021 12:04pm)

  • Anyone tried this today and gotten an appointment? by janegrey1554 (Mon 24th May 2021 8:08am)
  • FFS. I've got half a mind to show up at the end of the day at the Hydro and ask if they've got any extras they were going to bin. by janegrey1554 (Mon 24th May 2021 2:13pm)
  • This is a disgrace. At this point, is there anything unethical about showing up at the Hydro at the end of the day and asking to be jabbed with a vaccine otherwise going to the bin? Genuine question. I do not want to skip the queue, but surely it's better to have the vaccines in arms than being wasted like this. by janegrey1554 (Mon 24th May 2021 2:40pm)
  • At least call up to cancel so someone else who does want it can have it. by janegrey1554 (Mon 24th May 2021 2:54pm)
  • All the vaccines are stored in vials that contain multiple doses. Once punctured, the vial needs to be used within six hours. Surely if people are not showing for their jabs some of these doses are being binned from open vials. by janegrey1554 (Mon 24th May 2021 3:59pm)
  • This worked! Thank you. Pure gold. by janegrey1554 (Wed 26th May 2021 12:57pm)

  • That's me all jabbed up! by janegrey1554 (Thu 27th May 2021 7:05pm)
  • I had an appointment at the Hydro yesterday for 4:30 and was there two hours overall. They had six vaccinators total, three doing Pfizer and three doing AstraZeneca. I'm grateful to have gotten the first vaccine over with, but it was weird walking past rows of empty stalls. by janegrey1554 (Fri 28th May 2021 11:12am)
  • I saw a black cat yesterday wandering around Kent Road, down the street from the Gaelic school. If I see it again I'll try to take a closer look. Does Kimchi have a tag and collar on? by janegrey1554 (Mon 31st May 2021 11:57am)
  • If you're moving from NYC you're going to think flats in Glasgow are so cheap they all must be a scam. I think the average rent here is £700. As others have said, look at Rightmove and Zoopla. You should probably plan to stay in an Airbnb when you arrive for a few weeks to be able to view flats, as they go on and off the market very rapidly. And personally, I would not rent here without seeing the flat in person. by janegrey1554 (Tue 1st Jun 2021 10:56pm)
  • Seconding Cook. We survived on their meals for about a month after the baby arrived. It's not gourmet home cooking, but it's much better than your standard frozen meal. by janegrey1554 (Wed 2nd Jun 2021 10:00pm)
  • When we moved I actually offered our boxes for free on the Glasgow Market subreddit and got loads of offers from folks who wanted them. They got free boxes, and we got our recycling collected for free. by janegrey1554 (Fri 4th Jun 2021 12:39pm)
  • There's a regular buggy walk in Kelvingrove Park. They have a Facebook group and announce weekly walks. I would go, but my 12 month old exclusively chooses buggy walk days to take a long morning nap. by janegrey1554 (Thu 10th Jun 2021 12:14pm)
  • It depends on the type of vaccine. I don't think there is any advantage for waiting beyond 21/28 days with the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna), but waiting for the AstraZeneca vaccine does improve efficacy. by janegrey1554 (Fri 16th Jul 2021 4:56pm)
  • I understand there are supply issues necessitating the 8 week gap, but they really should not be spreading misinformation. My husband and I had to travel internationally ahead of our second doses to visit his immunocompromised dying brother, and got the doses in the US no problem at 5 weeks after the first. Now I'm really miffed that we couldn't have our second doses before we left the UK and won't be able to take advantage of the self-isolation exemption for fully vaccinated travellers because the second dose was not from the NHS. by janegrey1554 (Fri 16th Jul 2021 5:20pm)

  • It's unusual for the weather to be so cold here that that would be a concern. Personally, I've left my flat with heating off over Christmas for a fortnight without issue. When we got home the thermostat read 15C, I think. by janegrey1554 (Tue 30th Nov 2021 6:14pm)
  • It was over after 36 hours for me. I had the booster Monday, felt terrible yesterday, and back to normal today. by janegrey1554 (Wed 22nd Dec 2021 9:35am)
  • I haven't had a bin collection in five weeks and got so excited when I heard the lorry coming. They collected the neighbours' bins, didn't check our garden, hopped into their lorry and sped off. by janegrey1554 (Thu 6th Jan 2022 3:07pm)

  • We did the exact same as you several years ago (moving from postgraduate accommodation to a flat) with nearly two months of overlap and had no issues with either the letting agency or the university accommodation. Your letting agent is being ridiculous. Good luck getting into this flat or another one, the postgraduate flats are depressing. by janegrey1554 (Thu 14th Jul 2022 11:48pm)
