My missis has just applied for the 5 yr leave to remain visa - thats the third application in 5 yrs and if all goes well will be the last. The initial visa (as others have said) is applied for whilst in Canada. It took 3 months. We had been married for 20 yrs at that point and have two kids. Apparently she was more dangerous than a Somalian pirate with no passport, but thats another story. It costs 1,000’s for each application. When we moved back to Scotland from Asia, she used to just get a 6 month stamp every so often, as she still travelled to Asia for her business. She was eventually pulled and told to apply for the visa or be banned. The fact she had kids, property, husband etc and had broken no laws was irrelevant. If you are in it for the long term in your relationship then make sure you keep proof of how u met, being together, etc. Looking at other posts, the under 30, 2 yr right to work looks like your best / easiest bet. Just FYI - my mate in London met a Canadian lassie. She was getting kicked out and so they got married and just went for it. That was a few years ago and now they have kids. They are flats that cannot get a mortgage. You buy them and renovate, but normally needs to be someone who can do it themselves - ie have their own guys. Its normally simple stuff like water ingress that has been left, which 9 times out of 10 is a broken gutter or down-pipe. My mate bought a whole close and did them up one by one. Some flats took longer than others, but was actually a good investment for him. I hate all politicians as they are on the majority lazy and useless as is proved every day at both Bute House and No. 10. There are many benefits to being employed by the Gov / Council and in Scotland we have a far higher percentage of Gov employees than other parts of the country. I understand why everyone wants more money - they would be mental not to - but they should also acknowledge that at this particular moment in time there are so many others much worse off who will ultimately be hit to pay for any local Gov funded workers.
