  • The open top tour bus departs from George Square and is a great way to see the the city and the east and west end. If you get the two day ticket you can use the first day to explore and the second day to go to your favourites. The subway is a great way to get around the city, and is cheap for all day travel. You can even go on their site and get a card sent to your friends for when you arrive. Topping this up will give you discounted travel, and a free keepsake for when you leave. http://www.spt.co.uk/travelcards/subway-smartcard/ Someone above has mentioned Kelvingrove art gallery and I think it is a must-see. Max's bar on queen street (electronic), and slouch on bath street (rock) are great bars, open til 3. Amazing breakfast at singlEnd on Renfrew street. Hope you enjoy Glasgow!! by jonallin (Sun 12th Jan 2020 10:42am)
  • Whenever it happens (every year) it takes the while city by surprise and our infrastructure can't cope. Twice a year roughly is fair, as in proper snow, that remains after falling. by jonallin (Sat 18th Jan 2020 9:04pm)
  • Maybe I am just noticing the litter more than before. It drives me mental. by jonallin (Sun 19th Jan 2020 4:43pm)
  • Your reply feels strangely positive, j would love to think things are getting better. Maybe I am just noticing more as I am getting older and more grumpy and bitter :) I love the city too, but feel like there is a real problem with folk just being disrespectful to it. by jonallin (Sun 19th Jan 2020 4:45pm)
  • I took that as a joke, but not sure if that is how it was intended haha. by jonallin (Sun 19th Jan 2020 5:05pm)
  • I don't know of any working Glasgow wide. I have helped out with one in my area. While I was doing it a wee guy dropped a bottle right in front of me. What a laugh... by jonallin (Sun 19th Jan 2020 5:57pm)
  • The amount of money that goes on council tax, and the lack of services drives me up the wall. They were lovely shoes right enough haha kidding by jonallin (Sun 19th Jan 2020 6:04pm)
  • To be a bit more clear, I do agree that some parts are worse than others - but I feel like.in general the place is filthy. by jonallin (Sun 19th Jan 2020 6:09pm)
  • I've lived in the center now for 10 years. I really can't agree with you there! by jonallin (Sun 19th Jan 2020 6:05pm)
  • Excellent, thanks for this!! by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 8:20am)
  • Yeah, I'm not surprised by that at all, but find it really sad. lots of people have replied to say the place is fine, but every day anyone can say constant examples of how this isn't the case. It's also clearly not going to get better if a lot of people don't see a problem. I have largely avoided talking about council tax here because I haven't done the research on how council and gov funding and responsibility is split. What I do know is that I am paying a small fortune, and not seeing services that reflect that. by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 8:34am)
  • You've been downvoted, but noone has left a note... I have seen examples of what you are talking about. I once offered someone - who was asking for money for food - takeaway that I had from a restaurant and they told me to 'f off'. On a separate occasion I was told "no, if there's no ketchup". Which is a bit funny, but not a great situation. by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 8:31am)
  • I feel like that is what a council who are not performing will say, but probably masks a lot of the reality. I think the deterioration has been going on far longer than we've had a Tory government.... Secondly, I do think that in the absence of services, people should at least do their own little bit, like not dropping litter. Like not throwing cigarette ends all over the place. But that doesn't seem to be the reality by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 8:37am)
  • I am with you here. It drives me mad that I should need to clean up after others, but it's better than living in a literal dump! by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 8:43am)
  • I'm glad that there is regeneration projects, that is good news. But, the place you've labelled as top class, I still think they are plagued by litter. The avenues at Sauchiehall do look wonderful, and I hope that continues. A cycleable city would be magic. You mention outdoor cafes... That reminds me of the other day passing costs on Sauchiehall. The outside tables were all covered in dirty dishes and cups. Some of the paper cups had blown over and some on the floor, it was a riot. Just mentioning as it came to mind, I totally think loads of outdoor spaces sounds amazing - you'd think it was a given that staff would need to be able to do the rounds! Again, that's not a slight on staff, maybe they are spread far too thin too. by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 8:42am)
  • This has been downvoted and I'm not sure why. My disagreement is based on seeing real examples of everything I've mentioned, every day. So it's anything but hyperbole. by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 8:46am)
  • Ok great - but the point that was made, and my reply was that just because there is a surplus of food, it shouldn't be left lying around the streets. by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 11:53am)
  • That part of town is a bit zombie apocalypse... by jonallin (Mon 20th Jan 2020 10:17pm)

  • Thought this was funny. Not sure why you got downvoted by jonallin (Wed 29th Jan 2020 8:18am)
  • Our council need to look at cities which have successfully pedestrianised areas, and follow suit. Cycle facilities, public transport, taxis which are road worthy, sorted. It's not rocket science at all. by jonallin (Wed 29th Jan 2020 8:20am)
  • The area is generally fine, and is really close to the city centre. Lots of Glasgow is usually fine, until it's dark and there is a risk that people are hammered. The park will attract young drinkers at times. I don't think you should be concerned, so much as you should 'keep your wits about you'. The barras area is going through a lot of redevelopment. You have BAAD and West nearby too, which are both nice! Not seen prostitutes around there but not sure by jonallin (Fri 31st Jan 2020 8:02am)
  • There is a place in garnethill, on Dalhousie street. Not sure if it has the services you are looking for though! by jonallin (Sun 2nd Feb 2020 3:36pm)
  • The west end (accessed via the following subway stations: kelvinhall, hillhead, Kelvinbridge) is generally safer in my opinion, as the areas are generally more affluent. by jonallin (Sun 9th Feb 2020 9:47am)

  • That is some of the worst behaviour I've heard of. People are in really high risk situations in hospital, and people are putting them in danger. I remember once being in the beatson and seeing a guy put his feet up with shoes on, on the table in the break out room. On a ward of people who need to avoid any infection at all costs. It's really sad. by jonallin (Tue 10th Mar 2020 1:58pm)

  • Yeah big garden party near me too. So many people just can't avoid the temptation of getting hammered in the sun... No matter the risks by jonallin (Sun 31st May 2020 10:00am)
  • Haha, it didn’t turn violent, it just got to the fight part of the evening... I’m laughing but I don’t find it funny. I have seen people mention Dominic Cummings like that is some sort of defence for putting those around you at risk... That guy acted like a fool, and so is anyone else who acts like him. by jonallin (Sun 31st May 2020 10:22am)

  • Topshop and HMV? What could possibly go wrong? Retail is failing. And the city is looking awful for it by jonallin (Tue 1st Dec 2020 9:27pm)
  • I always wonder why more people don’t do exactly what you’re planning. Glasgow is great, and i think it is great that you want to come and be part of it. I would recommend looking at tradeston, Laurieston, and the east end. You might want to visit first and go hang around these areas a bit. Like anywhere, you want to keep your wits about you. by jonallin (Tue 1st Dec 2020 9:36pm)
  • You’re not alone. Today I asked the question “am I invisible” to the other half, because so many folk were so readily getting in my space. Side note, the amount of times I’ve seen folk spitting is unbelievable. Someone else said it, it’s the age of selfishness, and it makes me feel sad, and pure old saying that. by jonallin (Sun 13th Dec 2020 12:15am)
  • You are posting this in the wrong place, and it’s completely irrelevant. I agree with the underlying principles of your post, but your delivery and context are awful. Someone else said it better, you sound mental. by jonallin (Tue 15th Dec 2020 11:04pm)

  • He goes into various closes that are in really awful condition. by jonallin (Tue 15th Dec 2020 11:05pm)
  • Well, it would only take one member of staff to confirm something wouldn’t it? Or 2 to corroborate. Then I’m wondering, would it be unethical to reveal anonymously that this is happening? I think it probably is unethical to some extent, but there’s a debate to be had there. I don’t believe everything a random vlogger is saying. But I also don’t instantly dismiss it all. by jonallin (Tue 15th Dec 2020 11:42pm)
  • The guy very well might be off his nut, and he might be wrong. Do you think though that because you haven’t heard of these crimes that they are absolutely not taking place? Just asking. I suppose my view is that just because the guy isn’t Louis Theroux doesn’t mean that the place is perfect. We can see that from some of the gardens, back courts and closes. by jonallin (Tue 15th Dec 2020 11:48pm)
  • Also, you would need to show more, like a cat bed, wet wipes, condoms, and cat nip in a filthy close. Which you won’t find in my close. by jonallin (Wed 16th Dec 2020 8:48am)
  • So, to answer my question, you think none of it is happening? I guess that’s the real issue. It’s not really about the credibility of the guy posting videos, as many have said he may be suffering from poor mental health, but the really important point would be whether or not there is any truth in the claims. by jonallin (Wed 16th Dec 2020 8:45am)
  • It is not difficult to get your point, that none of us can actually know the truth from these Facebook posts. My issue is that people seem to either see it as A. Guy is crazy and racist, nothing to see here, or B. People are scum, hunt them down. Instead of picking sides, I’d rather understand what the truth is Edit: as for the comment about medical staff. 1. I would hop they’d report it. 2. We don’t know what procedures that triggers, and we don’t know how effective there are. So while I agree I would imagine it is reported properly, I don’t know what the result of that is. by jonallin (Wed 16th Dec 2020 8:52am)
  • The point I’m making is that the statement “either a place is full of unethical workers, or the guy is lying” is not true. It is more noise. by jonallin (Wed 16th Dec 2020 10:12am)

  • Have you been through George square? I don’t think you have. I have. Where else? by jonallin (Mon 8th Mar 2021 8:19pm)
  • Yes, there was really bad litter yesterday. That’s not really excusable. The benches looked like people standing on them had broken them. Again, not good enough. But you said that the city centre had been smashed up. I’ve been through it twice today, and that’s not what I saw. You are being disingenuous, and your agenda is very clear. I am clearly not trolling. I am fact checking you. Note the money raised to replace the benches already. by jonallin (Mon 8th Mar 2021 8:42pm)
  • Ok, we agree that there was bad littering and some truly regrettable broken benches. by jonallin (Mon 8th Mar 2021 8:53pm)
  • I already said, breaking the benches wasn’t good enough. But that people have paid money to pay for the benches is part of the complete story. The smashed shop door is nothing more than vandalism. Bad. Sorry, but to say the “city centre was smashed up” isn’t a fair portrayal. by jonallin (Mon 8th Mar 2021 9:34pm)

  • I live in the city centre and would recommend that you do the same. Relying on buses makes me miserable, whereas being able to walk or cycle is a real joy. That end of town does have a lot of homeless people. I lived very close to there, on Howard Street for years and loved it. So, it REALLY is not all doom and gloom. The trains are electric and so the air quality is not going to be massively affected. I have an air quality monitor which says that my air quality is good. I am near Hope Street, which someone else references. I would say that Glasgow generally has decent air quality, which I always assumed was due to the river making the city quite windy. by jonallin (Tue 12th Jul 2022 2:14pm)

  • I am trying to think of the student accommodation there. I can’t picture it. All of these areas will have issues with homeless people/addicts. However I dont mean issues at all times of day. Glasgow just has a growing homeless/addict population who live on the city streets. In that area, SaltMarket, You are right next to a park (Glasgow Green) which will be nice for walks etc. my advice would be the same for most parts of the city centre, and that is ANYONE can be wandering around drunk/intoxicated/looking for trouble, So I always keep my wits about me during the obvious times - late at night and in the dark. I personally have no intention of leaving town - I love it and have had no trouble, because I actively avoid it. someone else mentioned Garnethill. That is right next to your Uni, and well worth a look. That would be my first recommendation by jonallin (Tue 12th Jul 2022 2:37pm)

  • How is this the LEZ working as intended? by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 10:59am)
  • The LEZ is a PR exercise. There is a negligible benefit to forcing people who need to drive to upgrade their vehicles. I am all for better bike infra, and I will cycle everywhere, but I do not buy the nonsense about LEZ. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:06am)
  • Right, so less than 10% of people need new cars to get to work. This plan only works if it’s multifaceted. New bike infra, affordable, reliable public transport. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:19am)
  • So 10% aren’t? 10% of nurses needing a new car? I live in the city centre, and I don’t buy that it’s for the benefit of normal people, not one bit. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:15am)
  • What is the benefit to those 90%? by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:33am)
  • I’m saying that it’s not to the benefit of the majority. Not significantly. Someone shared studies in here that concluded exactly that. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:32am)

  • I’d agree with banning all cars from the city. That will drive meaningful change by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 11:55am)
  • Nurses was an example of people who are not paid enough and need to travel at times often not serviced well by public transport. There are many example of those jobs. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:08pm)
  • I’m clearly not making myself clear. I am all for meaningful change. 1. Improve public transport. 2. Ban the majority of vehicles from the city, except buses, taxis service vehicles. Banning <10% of cars is not meaningful change, and won’t drive significant improvement in the revenues of public transport. That’s my humble opinion. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:06pm)
  • I’m arguing that many workers need to drive. And it’s the poorest people affected by the current LEZ. Full ban on cars? That’s going to drive meaningful change in revenues for public transport. As it stands is a pr stunt and a pay on the back delivering negligible benefit to anyone. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:14pm)
  • You’re getting really hung up on the nurses right? As I said, it was an example. What about pub workers? by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:11pm)
  • Who does this all benefit? You clearly think the LEZ in its current form is wonderful. So who does it really benefit? by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:18pm)
  • Negligible difference, due to the small numbers in scope, like you just said. It’s not meaningful change. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:20pm)
  • I’d say you are too. At the same time few cars are in scope, while it delivers pollution benefits… Perhaps it was a mistake to give examples of the jobs that may be affected, as it’s not my main point. My main issue is that this is not meaningful change. If they said that no cars other than service vehicles were allowed in that space, that the subway would run 24/7 (or as close to as possible), and there would be proper public transport links and park and ride, then I would champion it. I live and work in the city centre and I see it as a false deliverable. It won’t drive significant public transport usage uplift, and won’t deliver significant emissions benefits. So there is no significant benefit. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:26pm)
  • I should have said “ban all non-service vehicles”. Not sure if that would include disability vehicles, but fair point. by jonallin (Thu 7th Sep 2023 12:31pm)
