  • So so so so true. I wish the buyer market rewarded first time buyers more and made the barriers to entry for 2nd home or 3rd home buyers much more extensive. I do have some faith left that things can turn around, but this bleeding out of housing supplies and the lower middle class has been ongoing in England for over a decade and Scotland didnt seem to brace for this phenomena. Like OP my partner are looking for a flat, at this rate we are looking to rent a single bedroom in a flatshare on spareroom.com. Thats where the good flats tend to be, they are already rented out in flatshares and you just have to hope to get lucky and slowly take over it as your flatmates move out! by soggysoyasauce (Thu 10th Mar 2022 3:06pm)
  • This is so completely untrue, and xenophobic. Scotland and the rest of the UK are literally reeling for immigrants to fill labour shortages that impacted us post Brexit. Not to mention, you and keto\_vin seem to think that the students that arrive stay after their degree, THE LARGE MAJORITY DO NOT. For reasons including visa regulation, take me for example, I am a Malaysian mechanical engineer who studied in Sheffield, my barrier to entry to be granted a visa was to earn 33k minimum in a shortage field (engineering), companies also have to be registered to sponsor my visa, which only massive corporations have the ability to do (i work for BAE Sys) and the visa costs 2k per contract offer, im on my second contract, costing my business 4k. Needless to say, not many people can earn 33k as a fresh grad, have degrees in shortage fields (mostly STEM), and have companies dying to pay extra to hire them, in essence the structural racism/xenophobia/anti immigrant mentality rife in the UK. If you want a reason why rent prices are going up, educate yourself on the incompetency of the tory party, lack of rent caps, lack of subsidised housing and AFFORDABLE new builds for the middle class, lack of barriers of entry to home owners wishing to buy their 2nd,3rd, etc home. The rich, along with your prejudice, are your issues. by soggysoyasauce (Thu 10th Mar 2022 3:17pm)
  • holy crap i just looked at your comment history, you need help. by soggysoyasauce (Thu 10th Mar 2022 3:22pm)
  • 1500 a month is more than enough, you can get a flat share on spareroom for 550 bills included, leaving you almost a grand to play around with. I live in the city centre with 650 rent and bills and 500 quid to get me by, with the rest going to savings. Edit: Also I'm assuming your 18500 is a lump sum/pay after tax by soggysoyasauce (Tue 15th Mar 2022 10:52am)
  • Well I think this is a PhD salary? so no tax and no council tax, super doable if that's the case! by soggysoyasauce (Tue 15th Mar 2022 11:46am)
  • Hi Fiverfeed, its avi! Thanks for coming to the cycle, it was nice to meet you, rest in peas has also been stuck in my mind haha. Commenting to say, bikeforgood do all sorts of led rides and confidence building lessons, mechanic courses and there are 2 bike shops which can help fix your bike for very cheap. Check out OP's link! As summer approaches we are expecting the group to get larger still, which will be fun, winter was tough on cycling activities! by soggysoyasauce (Sun 10th Apr 2022 11:03am)
  • we can see this massive waste of taxpayer money in all its glory! by soggysoyasauce (Wed 20th Apr 2022 1:30pm)
  • These ships hve no involvement in any war at all. I am a power nd propulsion engineer for bae is this ship yard, engineers are capable of making other things than 15 billion pound warships that do nothing at all. by soggysoyasauce (Wed 20th Apr 2022 8:41pm)
  • Its not a belief, 3 batches which initially costed almost 4 billion each. things go wrong, more cost is added. Im literally in the company. Im not saying BAE should make non military products, I'm saying why should tax payer money go to increasing the MOD budget (more than the NATO threshold) when no real threat is posed to the UK at all. and spare me the Ukraine argument, we havent been threatened by a neighbour since 2014 or longer. the MOD got a 20 billion increase during the beginning of covid whilst citizens got next to nothing. Why should the taxpayers make this country fertile for defense contractors. The engineers here can work in other sectors if the government ever decided to invest in manufacturing...and they say thatcher is dead. by soggysoyasauce (Wed 20th Apr 2022 10:23pm)
  • haha wild that people fetishize weapons of war like its something to be proud of. Touch grass OP. by soggysoyasauce (Wed 20th Apr 2022 10:25pm)
  • I am fully aware of what these ship actually do, as we have to design them for these actions in mind. Why dont you see that these actions do not require ships that costs billions of pounds. The weapon systems on these ships are unbelievable complex and are meant for much more extreme cases, they will never be used. Im not ignorant, you dont scrutinize your governments spending enough. by soggysoyasauce (Thu 21st Apr 2022 8:15am)
  • yea fuck it, lets hope these expensive weapons get used, if thats what makes you feel safe. lets bomb the fuck out of our enemies. God save the queen. by soggysoyasauce (Thu 21st Apr 2022 2:42pm)
  • Malaysian in glasgow here. Wouldnt go for indian food if you want mega spice, would go for south east asian food, like thai/viet Ka pao - jungle curry, was my last sweaty experience by soggysoyasauce (Sun 24th Apr 2022 7:12pm)

  • Malaysia: Ka pao along byres road does fusion of SEA food super well by soggysoyasauce (Sat 11th Jun 2022 9:53am)
  • some dishes there are decent and i used to order from there repeatedly, but for the cost, i dont think its worth it. by soggysoyasauce (Sat 11th Jun 2022 10:49am)
  • You're a 100% right. I am not really after malaysian classics here as they would never compare with the food back home, so I am looking for what scottish ingredients and cooks can do with Malaysian flavours. Ka Pao is a shining example, they understand SEA food so well and feel free to experiment, an example would be: in thai dishes, tamarind and lime is used for sourness, in Ka pao they used pickles! like actual pickles that would go on a burger, and it just worked so well. think it was in a curry as well, just wild haha by soggysoyasauce (Sat 11th Jun 2022 10:59am)
  • Comforter in the city looks great, thanks! by soggysoyasauce (Sat 11th Jun 2022 11:06am)

  • Me (25M) and my partner (28F) moved to Glasgow almost 3 years ago and have a similar issue, a few acquaintances here n there but not much in the way of good friends. We joined bikeforgood as volunteers and my partner started a writing group and that has helped us to meet like minded people, but its still tricky! We're into cycling too and joined glasgowpedalcollective (insta name, also on fb), i suggest you check it out. Drop us a PM if you would like to connect also! by soggysoyasauce (Wed 7th Sep 2022 7:48am)

  • Bikeforgood glasgow takes in donated bikes to sell, the shop supports other charitable activities. by soggysoyasauce (Sat 26th Nov 2022 1:39pm)
  • Hey onapermo, you wont hear me argue how mad it is charging 500 quid for "vintage" bikes, i dont get the fad myself. But ill explain how BFG is structured and it may ease your view. The bike shop operates as a normal bike shop (in an economical sense) where 2nd hand bikes are donated, then fully refurbished, and sold. More often that not, the parts on it are completely new and ofc would match the value of the frame. The aslo do bike fixes for people for 80 quid and more depending on what needs doing, as well as selling spare parts/normal bike shop bits. BFG is a social enterprise where the shop covers 60% of their costs and the Government funds the other 40% to do community driven work. Examples of which are teaching people how to ride bikes, refugee cycle scheme (refugees get a 2nd hand bike, are guided through fixing it, then keep it for themselves), bike awareness and maintenance projects for locals, basically other such things that make cycling more accessible to more people. So through donating and BFG selling a donated bike, it funds charitable causes. It is difficult to see that after shopping for 2nd hand bikes then seeing a 500 quid price tag, but there are inner workings at play :) Source: I have been volunteering there for 2 years or so + their website. by soggysoyasauce (Sat 26th Nov 2022 5:07pm)
