  • Could try one of the Web 2.0 online mattress suppliers. Lots of sales on. We got an Emma and pretty happy with it but there are many with a similar setup (Casper, Eve, Bruno, Simba, Leesa). Pretty sure they will be delivering. They all have 100 days or more free returns so just take whichever one will deliver in time for you and if you don't like it you can order another one and return the first one. by thrope (Fri 15th May 2020 6:20am)
  • Came to say this one as well. Proper customer service and knowledge, do it on site (rather than sending off to another service which a lot of shops do). by thrope (Sun 26th Jul 2020 11:53am)

  • That's nonsense. 0.16% of the entire population of New York State died [32.8k deaths in population of 19.5 million, numbers from Google] , which certainly puts that as a lower bound (and then only if you assume every single person was infected which surely didn't happen). Obviously it varies a lot by age so depends a lot on demographics, but I think NY state (high income western country) is not too dissimilar to UK. Assuming UK reaches same level as US (population fatality rate) we can expect another 80,000 deaths this winter. Cases going up in NY cast doubt on whether heard immunity acheived. by thrope (Wed 7th Oct 2020 3:59pm)
  • To me the NY numbers seem more accurate, and don't depend on case numbers / testing etc. (its deaths to population, both measured accurately). by thrope (Wed 7th Oct 2020 4:04pm)
  • Another issue is the strong dependence on demographics. Countries with much fewer elderly people will have a lower overall mortality rate (population or case). I'm not sure a worldwide figure is meaningful without age brackets, but I think across countries with similar demographics its reasonable to compare. by thrope (Wed 7th Oct 2020 4:22pm)
  • You can link up there to the West Highland Way past Carbeth, and it also links with the John Muir Way. But these might not be remote enough for OP as you will definitely see other people around there. by thrope (Sun 1st Nov 2020 8:14am)
  • Another factor is the cladding problems post Grenfell have come to light in Scotland just in the last year or two, so basically any flats built post-2002 or so are unsaleable at the moment (or more accurately, unmortgageable). I know Scottish cities don't have as much as others in the UK but it is a large part of the city 1-2 bed flat first time buyer stock that is out of the market at the moment. On the other hand, if you were a cash buyer there would be opportunities to get new build flats (with parking etc.) at knockdown prices (hoping that Scottish government will step in at some point with remediation, whether directly or by putting pressure on the builders). by thrope (Sun 8th Nov 2020 11:45am)
  • That's all correct (except EWS survey is usually much much more expensive than that and is something you definitely should not be doing as a buyer). But its not just high rise, its really any new build (post 2002-2004) that is effected, its not just the cladding, also the insulation, fire breaks and other systematic deficits. by thrope (Sun 8th Nov 2020 12:24pm)
  • This won't work after January because of Brexit. There is no certainty yet on travelling to/from EU with pets but it is likely to be much more difficult than now. by thrope (Tue 10th Nov 2020 11:59am)
  • Mother India (on uber eats), Paesano (heat up pizzas at home), Beirut Star (best mezze in the city), Piece (lunchtime sandwiches), Non Viet, Pickled Ginger, Wagamama, El Perro Negro (burgers) by thrope (Wed 18th Nov 2020 11:48am)
  • Wilsons Catch of the Day has excellent trees. Might need to call up and order. by thrope (Tue 24th Nov 2020 1:24pm)
  • I'd be surprised if you could get a mortgage on it - the problem of flammable cladding is pretty massive on any new build since 2000. You need an EWS1 form with a full survey to confirm its safe before banks will lend on it. Very very few are coming back clean. Also "cladding" means any external wall system separate from the structure (so includes render, brick cladding etc. not just metal panels). Make sure you check it out thoroughly. by thrope (Fri 18th Dec 2020 3:21pm)
  • Actually can be quite hard to rescue because they usually have very specific requirements on your home (private garden, 6 ft fences). If you live in a flat or tenement you can forget it. I understand the concern but I think especially older or less energetic breeds can have a perfectly good life living in a flat. by thrope (Tue 16th Mar 2021 9:50am)
  • It's not that cold in Glasgow but the humidity is very high (very often above 90%). This means if you walk around even when the temperature is not that high (say 15 C) you can still get very sweaty. I would go for the thinnest windproof jacket you can so you can layer. I like goretex active because I find with cheaper materials I end up sweating like I'm wearing a plastic bag. So I would say any gortex active with a loose enough fit you can get a big warm jumper underneath in the winter if you need it. by thrope (Sun 1st Aug 2021 7:54am)
  • I guess the main point is to think of the humidity. People from hot countries know that humidity makes a huge difference to how uncomfortable the heat is, and I think it does also in lower Glasgow temperature range. Often the humdiity is 99% so if you stand still you'll be cold, but as soon as you start walking or moving your body has no way to cool off. For me moving to Glasgow the humidity was the biggest shock and is the part of the weather I find most uncomfortable. I saw someone else recommend an umbrella but I would say definitely not for Glasgow - its too windy and they just break. First windy day of the academic year you see all the litter bins filled with broken umbrellas! Most important is to have a properly windproof jacket. I like the goretext active jackets because they have proper windproof zips, straps to tighten the wrists, waist and hood to seal them and make them windproof. Agree with the other comments to wait until you get here (could try and get a cheap windproof for the first few days, then figure out what you would like). by thrope (Mon 2nd Aug 2021 9:41am)

  • > In keeping with national guidance, major changes to activities across our campuses this week are not expected. It has been confirmed, however, that Her Majesty’s State Funeral will take place at 11:00 on Monday 19 September and that the day is to be an official Bank Holiday. In keeping with all Bank Holidays, this means there will be no teaching or events taking place on Monday 19 September and certain campus buildings will be closed. Study spaces, including the University Library and James McCune Smith Building, will remain open – please check the UofG Life app for the latest details. by thrope (Tue 13th Sep 2022 9:07am)
