  • Arrochar is lovely and a great base for some nice walks with cracking scenery. Good variety ranging from fairly easygoing to 3000+ ft munros! Check out walkhighlands. Good local pubs as well. Can get bus or train from Glasgow, takes just over an hour. Leave in the morning, back in the eve. Great wee outing, just remember the insect repellent! by zzyzx__ (Tue 18th Aug 2020 3:14pm)
  • I’d be going to Citizens Advice if I were her by zzyzx__ (Tue 18th Aug 2020 4:21pm)
  • Equi’s in Hamilton is incredible. They do take away tubs and have loads of different flavours. Quite a few chippies across Lanarkshire stock them as well by zzyzx__ (Sat 22nd Aug 2020 1:43pm)
  • I’ve had good experiences with Enterprise Car Club. They charge by the hour so it often works out cheaper than other companies if you’re hiring for less than a day. If you sign up in a branch you get a better deal than online as well. by zzyzx__ (Mon 24th Aug 2020 2:22pm)
  • We played Codey. Two teams, one is “het”. The other team devises a code with each person taking a different part of the code. The het team’s job was to catch folk and beat the shit outta them until they told them their bit of the code. Once the het team cracks the code, the teams reverse sides. Was brutal, but so good. Jaggy nettles were an often deployed tactic. by zzyzx__ (Tue 25th Aug 2020 10:13am)
  • DELETED One of my pals plays with [United Glasgow](https://unitedglasgowfc.org.uk/). Worth checking out, they sound like a class team with cracking values by zzyzx__ (Tue 25th Aug 2020 3:39pm)
  • If you’re looking to park on the street for free [this](https://glasgowgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c7573c30724645c7861698125682b78a) is a pretty good tool. by zzyzx__ (Tue 1st Sep 2020 1:00pm)
  • Not sure if they’re open weekends but Ashwood Car Service Centre have been great with me. They’re near the Lidl, just off Maryhill road. by zzyzx__ (Wed 9th Sep 2020 10:25am)
  • Cafe Antipasti on Sauchiehall Street. by zzyzx__ (Mon 14th Sep 2020 6:20pm)
  • I drive round that way a lot and imagine it’d be pretty polluted. Traffic on Eglington street is always at a standstill and you’re right next to the motorway on the wrong side of prevalent SW wind. Would probs be fine for the short term but long term I’d be worrying about my lungs! Definitely handy for the subway and town. Unsure about personal safety though. by zzyzx__ (Tue 15th Sep 2020 7:52pm)
  • Your mum never tell you not to tar everyone with the same brush? by zzyzx__ (Thu 24th Sep 2020 9:44pm)
  • Berkeley 2 in Anderston is decent. Good sized rooms (took our Big Band with ease!) and loads of equipment available. Really well soundproofed as well. They have parking too but it’s usually rammed. £25 for 3 hours. by zzyzx__ (Tue 29th Sep 2020 8:31pm)
  • Not sure man. I’d give them a ring and ask, they’re nice folk by zzyzx__ (Tue 29th Sep 2020 8:37pm)
  • Try the careers pages of the supermarkets as their jobs aren’t always on Indeed. Morrison’s uploaded some new vacancies today in the Gallowgate shop. Good luck! by zzyzx__ (Wed 30th Sep 2020 11:56am)
  • Pret filter coffee. £1. Or 50p if you bring your own mug. by zzyzx__ (Fri 2nd Oct 2020 7:33am)
  • Canal path- there’s bars for exactly that. Near the Scottish Canals/Speir’s Wharf bit. Directly across from The Whisky Bond. by zzyzx__ (Sat 3rd Oct 2020 7:32pm)
  • Mental how many of the tenements are boarded up/have broken or missing windows. Even decent looking ones. No doubt long demolished but a far cry from how desirable they are nowadays. by zzyzx__ (Sun 4th Oct 2020 2:59pm)
  • The Kelvin Walkway is really lovely. It’s runs along the River Kelvin between Kelvingrove Park and Botanic Gardens. Some of the best greenery in Glasgow by zzyzx__ (Wed 14th Oct 2020 10:16am)
  • That’s awful man, I’m really sorry to hear that. Can only assume they were acting out of character due to the feeling of vulnerability. Do you wear a Sunflower Lanyard? It let’s the staff know you’re medically exempt from wearing a mask. Most shops give them out for free if you ask for one. Or you can get them online for 50p. by zzyzx__ (Thu 15th Oct 2020 4:31pm)

  • Arty Party at Charing X by zzyzx__ (Tue 27th Oct 2020 1:07pm)
  • Ruchill Park sits just off the canal across from Murano. Cracking view of the city from the top of the flagpole. For trail running (muddy stuff) Dawsholm Park is really great. If you stay on the Kelvin Walkway after Maryhill Locks it leads you into the park. Mugdock park is also lovely but busy at weekends. by zzyzx__ (Sat 31st Oct 2020 8:41am)
  • Make sure you apply online for supermarkets. Dropping in your CV shows initiative but be sure to apply for the position online as well. Good luck! by zzyzx__ (Sun 1st Nov 2020 5:44pm)
  • Riddrie? Cheap, nice tenements. Quiet and safe area. Stones throw from Alexandra Park and the motorway. Quick buses into town (but no trains). Walkable to pubs/cafes in Dennistoun. A lot sleepier than Partick though. by zzyzx__ (Sun 8th Nov 2020 7:06pm)

  • Get a Kryptonite U lock and lock it through your front wheel and your frame. (Like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/26ziu3DEN85gR4Ed8)) Takes a bit of practice but you’ll get the hang. Always lock to a bike rack if you can. Railings can be cut surprisingly easily. by zzyzx__ (Sat 14th Nov 2020 6:06pm)
  • Eusebi Deli. Their pizzas are a thing of the gods. Thicker Roman style bases. By far the best takeaway pizza I’ve had in Glasgow. They’re on UberEats too! by zzyzx__ (Wed 18th Nov 2020 4:05pm)
  • Probably is yeah. A bit of a giveaway is if it’s factored by a Housing Association (There are exceptions though). It’ll tell you on the Home Report. Don’t let it put you off. A lot of ex-council flats look cracking. For what you lack in character, the flats tend to be big inside, well thought out and built solidly. My mate has a maisonette in the Wyndford and the rooms inside are bigger than my tenement! And who doesn’t love a balcony? Had a look on Rightmove and that flat looks brilliant. Best of luck if you go for it. by zzyzx__ (Sat 21st Nov 2020 5:23pm)
  • Both great areas to live, mate! Really popular are a with students. Can be noisy, I’d avoid flats on Dumbarton Road/Argyle Street for that reason. I’d recommend you view flats before signing a lease. If it’s a letting agent, be prepared to accept the flat on the day. It’s very competitive. There’s good letting agents and bad letting agents but I’m not too clued up on that side of things. Heard bad things about HappyLets. As for a sim, I’ve been with Giffgaff on a sim only deal and they were great. Good luck with the move! by zzyzx__ (Sat 21st Nov 2020 8:47pm)

  • Dennistoun isn’t that big. North of the m8 is Royston. by zzyzx__ (Thu 3rd Dec 2020 7:34pm)
  • Condolences. Jk, I’m originally from Wishaw and it’s not that bad! LocalObelix’s comment is a good summary. Most of the local pubs will have Sunday league teams if you’re into that. Ravenscraig sports centre is really great and worth checking out membership. Was used as a Commonwealth Games venue, teams still travel to train there. Aquatec (the other sports centre) is a bit shite. Railway Tavern is a decent drinking establishment, very lively at weekends. But the trains handy enough for a night in Glasgow. The library is decent-ish and membership is free. Aside from Strathclyde Park, Baron’s Haugh is an amazing nature reserve. It’s an old country estate with miles of walking/running trails by the Clyde. Real hidden gem. Good luck! by zzyzx__ (Sat 12th Dec 2020 3:33pm)

  • Cathkin Braes is probably your best bet. The highest point in the city is contained in the park at around 200m elevation. At that height, you’ll hopefully see some snow with a bit of luck. by zzyzx__ (Sat 26th Dec 2020 8:17pm)

  • I know, it’s the same with Bellahouston after the gigs they have there (you can actually see the damage on Google Earth). Folk love to knock TITP but the concept of having a festival in the countryside where there’s an abundance of green space makes more sense to me than ruining the comparably little green space we have in the city. I’m not against festivals but Glasgow Green, Bellahouston and Rouken Glen were all meant to be hosting them this year. That’s 3 nice green spaces out the game by the end of summer by zzyzx__ (Thu 14th Jan 2021 12:28pm)

  • It’s kinda refreshing to read all the replies on here. Honestly thought I was the only one experiencing this. I’m currently studying at GU. Grew up in a Lanarkshire mining town. Lost count of the times my accent has been imitated. I’ve been told “you sound really Scottish” and my accent is “broad” “thick” “rough”. It pales with the discrimination that others face... But for 5 years your Glaswegian accent being singled out at the University of Glasgow? It still doesn’t make sense to me by zzyzx__ (Thu 18th Feb 2021 10:30pm)

  • If you have a car and don’t mind travelling there’s a few old coal bings around Shotts that are dead accessible. Have a look at Benhar Road, Springhill Road in Shotts and the 5 Sisters in West Calder on Google Maps. On a cloudy day they all look bleak af. Also Telegraph Road in Airdrie, idk if it’s a peat bog or a brownfield site but it literally looks like scorched earth. • Waterproof parka for winter. Alternatively layer a lightweight down jacket or thick fleece paired with a waterproof jacket. Doc Martens are fab. For trainers, I’ve always found Adidas Samba’s surprisingly good for winter, keeping feet warm and dry. Decent on ice too. (They were originally designed for playing football in icy winter conditions!) For summer, you don’t have to worry. Just have a lightweight waterproof on you at all times. • Tenements were originally built with sound deafening under the floorboards in the form of ash/sawdust. A lot of flats had this removed during the 20th century during renovations. My first flat had the deafening removed in some rooms and you could hear downstairs conversations word for word! • It has it’s pros and cons like anywhere else but me and my girlfriend have lived here for the past few years and love it. Pros: Biggest one is the location, it’s such a handy place to live especially if you like socialising in the city centre. Being able to walk home from a night home is a big plus and the walk is relatively safe. There’s loads of cafes, restaurants, bars, shops in the neighbourhood. Loads of things to do, It really does feel thriving and on the up. Close to the Barras, even more food/drink options and constantly improving. Public transport is great - handy bus and train routes. Driving is decent compared to other areas, easy access to M8 and M74. Loads of green space with Necropolis, Alexandra Park, Glasgow Green. Lots of clubs and activities in these. Cons: Dog shite is everywhere, much worse than other areas - it’ll probably end up in your close at some point which is, well… shite. Litter and flytipping is a bit of a pain. Some closes are nicer than others - a lot of transient neighbours who dgaf or leave things behind when moving. Really sorry you experienced the discrimination. The whole area is really diverse - there are lots of Asian families in my part of the neighbourhood and several Asian/African grocers. It’s reputation as a rough neighbourhood is really outdated. Maybe a couple of rougher pockets but not as rough as my hometown in Lanarkshire. Me and my girlfriend do a lot of walking/running and have never had any hassle. Unlikely to find trouble unless you look for it. On the whole, it’s a great place to live and I’d recommend it if you’re young, childless and like being out and about. by zzyzx__ (Sun 7th May 2023 5:01pm)
