  • The pigs don’t keep people safe. They cause more harm than good. It was one of them who murdered Sarah Everard. And how exactly do you think 3 CCTV cameras, positioned directly in front of huge open fields are going to prevent rapes? They are there to monitor young people gathering and criminalise students having fun. Sorry for all those who work and pay taxes, but the council is meant to serve everyone, including students and the unemployed. I highly doubt young people (including young women) were consulted on these plans. They are deeply regressive. No need to resort to personal attacks. by PearPrickle (Sun 16th May 2021 3:19pm)
  • Also, more to the point, cameras don’t prevent rapes. Proper education and awareness does. I don’t see the council funding any of the necessary programmes which would actually address the root of the problem. by PearPrickle (Sun 16th May 2021 3:20pm)
  • Police forces are huge, powerful institutions which frequently abuse their power. Nastily insulting to an individual expressing an apparently unpopular opinion is not the same as calling the police pigs. They already have enough people defending them, as the comments on my post demonstrate. I have had horrible experiences with police as a result of who I am. I doubt anyone who believes the police truly protect us all us can relate to this. Anyway, I wonder how many of you piling on to call me a petty criminal or pervert actually go to Kelvingrove Park. I walk through it every day and live right next to it. It used to feel like a safe space, even when packed full of drunk students. It doesn’t any more. by PearPrickle (Mon 17th May 2021 3:52pm)
  • Are any of those parks kept open at night though? I though KG was unique in that regard. Better lighting for all parks open at night seems the best immediate solution. But as I said in an earlier post, rape culture isn’t going to be tackled by lights or cameras, because these things do not deal with the root of the problem. The placement of some of these cameras also makes me sceptical about that rationale. Like the one right in front of the big open field where young people tend to gather and drink. by PearPrickle (Thu 20th May 2021 6:16am)
  • Have you been in touch with the [COP26 Coalition](https://cop26coalition.org)? They're doing lots of great work providing spaces and resources for the many community organisations coming to Glasgow for COP26. If not, I know some people from the Coalition through my involvement with XR Glasgow and I could put you in touch with them. by PearPrickle (Fri 17th Sep 2021 10:40am)
  • During COP, I’ll be sharing my room in my student flatshare with two German women from Greenpeace. It’s a great thing to consider doing, especially if you care about the climate crisis and want to do your bit. It’s easy enough to list a room or floor space on [the COP homestay network](https://climate.humanhotel.org). COP26 is set to be the least open, transparent and accessible COP yet and in this context it is vital that we amplify the voices of marginalised groups from indigenous communities and the Global South. Letting someone stay with you for a few days is a great way to help, as well as getting to meet interesting people from all over the world and learn about what they’re doing. by PearPrickle (Sun 26th Sep 2021 12:02pm)
  • It is absolutely true, a quick search online finds several sources to back this up. Here are a couple: https://theguardian.com/business/2021/nov/02/barclays-has-financed-56bn-in-new-fossil-fuel-projects-since-january-cop26 https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/barclays-banks-climate-change-fossil-fuels/ Defund Climate Chaos (https://defundclimatechaos.uk) also has a good summary of the issue, of how banks are continuing to fuel the catastrophic climate crisis coming our way, as well as what can be done to try and stop this. I understand people like to make themselves feel better by tarring all activists with the same brush, presuming they must be crazy or extremist. Unfortunately, the climate crisis is very real and we are headed somewhere very scary unless politicians, corporations and the powerful more generally take action. Signing petitions, going on marches and writing to your MP will not solve the problem. That’s why people feel compelled to take direct action. by PearPrickle (Mon 20th Jun 2022 6:09pm)
  • So of all the banks in Europe, Barclays is the biggest funder of fossil fuel projects. (They also have a very murky history of funding apartheid in South Africa, illegal arms sales, I mean in pretty much every gruesome conflict you will often find Barclays somehow involved on the wrong side of it.) Globally, I think it’s JP Morgan who are the largest funder of fossil fuels. by PearPrickle (Tue 21st Jun 2022 9:18am)
  • Just found this, a useful resource to find out more about which banks are the worst culprits for funding fossil fuels globally: https://priceofoil.org/2022/03/30/banking-on-climate-chaos-2022/ by PearPrickle (Tue 21st Jun 2022 9:22am)
  • I’m looking for somewhere in Glasgow too, hopefully moving in early to mid September. I’m 25, non-binary and a mature student at UofG. I’m based down south, but I’m up here for a few days to do viewings and might need to come back again before I find somewhere. Maybe we could buddy up and rent a new flat together? Feel free to send me a message :) by PearPrickle (Sun 20th Aug 2023 2:18pm)
