  • I pretty much rebuilt my social circle when I moved to Glasgow out of the uni skydiving club. It's a pretty neat group, worth going along to one of their evenings, it's in the rock bar on hyndland road on a Tuesday. by SpeedflyChris (Tue 22nd Jan 2019 8:27am)
  • The question is do you have to go further from your front door to find hummus or heroin? by SpeedflyChris (Sat 27th Apr 2019 2:34am)

  • Some of the professors in the engineering department make big bucks but they do a fair amount of consulting. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 27th Apr 2019 2:35am)
  • I tried cycling to uni every day when I was a student, after nearly getting taken out by taxis and other assorted idiots a few times I gave up. That's not to mention the weather. The whole concept of cycling in Glasgow in the depths of winter can get fucked. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 27th Apr 2019 2:41am)

  • I was definitely cycling by one of the press photographers as he was taking a load of pictures so if anyone sees a blue mountain bike in the photos I promise I'm not with these people. But yeah, I think when I went by the police, press and bemused bystanders outnumbered the protesters. I think I went past about 12:30 or so. by SpeedflyChris (Sun 17th May 2020 3:01am)
  • I wouldn't say I'm triggered by it, it's just odd that it's such a political tool when it was never really spoken in the central belt. by SpeedflyChris (Wed 2nd Sep 2020 8:52pm)
  • I just had an offer accepted on somewhere at 4% over home report. by SpeedflyChris (Wed 2nd Sep 2020 8:55pm)
  • Okay so I was wrong about that, but it's not been commonplace outside the Highlands for at least a few hundred years and the lowland dialect has been dead for generations. by SpeedflyChris (Wed 2nd Sep 2020 9:13pm)
  • Nope, bit further out but a friend of mine just bought a flat in hyndland and paid not much over home report. It took me a few attempts getting outbid, I think things have calmed down the last month or so compared to July. Paying 10+% over when we're headed into a depression is nuts imo. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 3rd Sep 2020 12:09am)
  • It scales with the jakeiness of the shop. Waitrose and M&S have really high mask usage in my experience. Asda, Lidl and the dodgier corner shops near me are very poor. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 31st Dec 2020 2:02am)
  • >I feel like my skin's crawling after just 10 minutes in Tesco I can't imagine pulling an 8 hour shift with one on. Do you have skin problems or is there something wrong with your masks or something? by SpeedflyChris (Thu 31st Dec 2020 2:05am)
  • So I've just gone through 6 weeks of hell dealing with this, despite having been asked to shield last year etc. GP said it was nothing to do with them, GG&C NHS trust don't want to know, the vaccination helpline don't want to know, and the missing appointments service were no use either. Get yourself registered as an unpaid carer: https://register.vacs.nhs.scot/ The classification is *very* broad (I fall into it anyway as I shop for my uncle who is CEV with a brain tumor and lives alone) and even if you don't fit into it, you're supposed to be group 6 anyway, and since there is no functional way in Scotland to actually get problems like this fixed, the best thing to do is to sign up on here, and you'll get an appointment very quickly thereafter. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 8th Apr 2021 1:51pm)

  • > so I assume they link it to that and most likely verify it that way They don't verify anything. I've been helping my uncle who is doing chemo but I have nothing to prove that whatsoever. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 13th May 2021 4:03pm)
  • > plus you are assigned some date and time and then have to jump through hoops to change it if needed It's actually really easy to log in and change it online once you get an appointment. I had to move mine because of a funeral. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 13th May 2021 4:01pm)
  • > the UK sat on their ass after the AZ approval in January while the EU is going to eclipse the UK I mean this is just absolute nonsense. https://i.redd.it/bmrrt9q7kuy61.png The UK's vaccine rollout has slowed in the past couple of weeks (not sure why we're stockpiling quite so much, possibly still concerns about potential disruption of mRNA imports) but our rate is still about average for Europe, and we're way ahead on both first and second doses. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 13th May 2021 4:00pm)
  • The suggestion is that we've been stockpiling large amounts of mRNA vaccines due to the concern that the EU might start blocking exports, and that might leave us unable to give second doses. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 13th May 2021 4:06pm)
  • >Luckily Celtic fans would be out helping the homeless and cleaning the streets if they’d won ahaha It's possible for both groups to be a shower of cunts. by SpeedflyChris (Sun 16th May 2021 2:02am)

  • >That's fucking insane. The vast majority of leaks and subsequent damage is going to cost way less than £3,000 to fix. > >The first thing I'd be doing is finding out why the fuck your Building insurance excess is £3,000, I cannot stress enough how utterly ludicrous that is. Because that's the cheapest policy the factors could find and most factors are just there to exploit money out of the owners without actually providing anything of value (looking at you Your Place). by SpeedflyChris (Sun 16th May 2021 2:20am)
  • Aren't we entering week 34 of the temporary two week restrictions we brought in during September? by SpeedflyChris (Sun 16th May 2021 12:27pm)
  • >appears more resilient to some vaccines Not to an extent that is likely to make any sort of appreciable difference. by SpeedflyChris (Sun 16th May 2021 12:38pm)
  • We've been stockpiling doses to prevent disruption of second doses. That and the other thing slowing down first doses is the guidance on not offering AZ to the under 40s, but that's being reviewed now in light of the rising cases. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 17th May 2021 9:59am)
  • Which sort of begs the question as to why they gave you an appointment so late after that in the first place. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 17th May 2021 10:03am)
  • Call up the helpline and contact the missing appointments service, as much as they are usually thoroughly useless they may be able to help on this point. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 17th May 2021 10:03am)
  • Meanwhile, none of these are actually a problem with the current vaccines and hospitalisations continue to go through the floor. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 17th May 2021 10:00am)

  • The elections have passed by, they don't give a half ounce of shit about communication at this point. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 21st May 2021 1:01am)
  • > In hindsight this should have been accounted for in the vaccination programme to prevent outbreaks in the major cities. If we had focused on vaccinating younger age groups in Glasgow over people in their 40s and 50s in rural areas we could have a more even spread of vaccination levels across the country. Anyone with the most basic grasp of maths could have told you this months ago, and many were. The question is whether we're targeting *cases* or *deaths*. Targeting the over-50s first made sense for reducing *deaths* with the caveat that a big surge in cases was then inevitable once schools went back and restrictions eased. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 24th May 2021 12:28pm)
  • > The risks of serious illness for this variant are much greater for non-vulnerable people than previously Going to need a citation on that, because I've not seen anything to indicate that with any degree of certainty. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 24th May 2021 12:25pm)
  • > Single dose AZ is only 30% effective There are some *huge* error bars on that estimate, for a start. Another point that the study doesn't control for is change in behaviour following vaccination. I know that I've felt a lot more comfortable with eating out and such since I got my jab in April. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 24th May 2021 12:23pm)
  • I never got a letter either, did the same thing as you re calling up and getting my appointment details given to me that way. The NHS then emailed and texted me the appointment details a few days before the appointment. I didn't ever receive an actual letter. I didn't need my reference at the appointment either, just had to confirm my name and date of birth. by SpeedflyChris (Mon 24th May 2021 12:30pm)
  • It is entirely unenforced. There is nobody hurt by you going outside the city for outdoor activities either. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 12:39pm)
  • I've lost two friends to suicide during this, and the isolation of lockdown was a major factor in one. The people who are at serious risk from COVID have now been offered a vaccine. If elderly antivaxxers get it and die then that's not a problem that should concern the rest of us. Play stupid games win stupid prizes. It doesn't make sense for a million people to lose another year of their lives to prevent a handful of deaths. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 12:43pm)
  • > Violate lockdown, and you are potentially putting people at risk. Who is being put at risk by someone from Glasgow travelling outside the city to go walking? by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 12:40pm)
  • The levels should be set on hospitalisations rather than cases. We vaccinated older people first, because we understood that *stopping cases was secondary to preventing deaths* and so now we have entirely unprotected schoolkids and mostly unprotected younger people experiencing an increase in cases, with minimal harm to vulnerable vaccinated people. Yes, some antivaxxers will probably die, but that's their own fault so fuck them. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 12:49pm)
  • Yep, and meanwhile there are stories of half the appointments at the hydro being no-shows. It's *blatantly fucking obvious* that the letters system isn't working in younger age groups. Thank god they've changed track slightly for the under 30s, but the English system of letting people book their own appointments was always going to be so much more convenient and so much more effective. Of course, Sturgeon would burst into flames if she ever admitted that any part of the English system was better, so we won't see recognition of that from government. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 12:47pm)
  • Exactly. My parents are coming to visit tomorrow for the first time in months, and my dad was stressing about it. Had to ask him why? They've both had both their jabs, my partner and I have had our first. The risk of harm there is almost entirely absent. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 12:52pm)
  • Right, but meanwhile in the real world the travel restrictions have been essentially unenforced for months. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 2:18pm)
  • Lol, so according to that fine in Glasgow they have issued less than 1 fine per day almost every week of the pandemic. I think that constitutes "ultimately no enforcement". by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 2:29pm)
  • > But right now, 40% of the population are still unvaccinated, many of them extremely vulnerable people who are unable to have the vaccine for health reasons. What health reasons are there that would contraindicate *all* of the available vaccines? Serious question as I'm not aware of any. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 28th May 2021 3:12pm)
  • >That's just not true, hospitalisations have been trending up over the last couple of weeks. Now the gradient isn't as steep as it was in September but it is increasing. Frankly I couldn't give a half ounce of deep fried shit if antivaxxers die choking on their own blood and vomit at this point. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 29th May 2021 4:23am)
  • >The facts are also that there are bad people on all sides. Whatever football team you support there will be wankers and absolute bams who affiliate themselves with the football club, or any group basically in society will have a small % who are low life scumbags. It's a product of the society we live in that there are bad people due to a multitude of reasons, the blame for which lies with government due to a lack of investment in social programs, education, employment opportunities and so on. So I'm quite into motorsports, used to race, pre-pandemic used to go to a lot of races and rally events. Not once did I ever see a fan kick off because their team or driver won, or didn't win. Now, I'm open to the possibility that football is just a shit game for twats, but you don't get this sort of bullshit in other sports, not to anything like the same degree. by SpeedflyChris (Sun 30th May 2021 2:11am)
  • >To add to this Victoria road/ govanhill is a great area By what possible metric? Fucking hell. by SpeedflyChris (Wed 11th Aug 2021 10:43pm)
  • I lived in Shawlands until last year. The fact that there are some nice coffee shops along the edge of Queens Park doesn't make Govanhill suddenly not shit. That said, it's certainly improving. by SpeedflyChris (Fri 13th Aug 2021 2:13am)

  • I'm yet to hear of one person who has experienced anything that might be described as a useful interaction with the vaccine helpline. by SpeedflyChris (Thu 19th Aug 2021 2:01pm)
  • >a utilities sector that prioritises the immediate needs of customers instead of shareholders, or a government that will make them do so either through nationalisation or stricter regulation The current price rises have exactly nothing to do with our utility companies. The price of natural gas peaked in December at a price 700% up on where it was a year ago, and it's still up 300%. That is largely driven by increased demand from China and Europe, and tensions over the Russia/Ukraine situation. Prior to the price cap increase the entire sector has been losing money hand over fist for months. If prices go back to where they were November/December they'll all be losing money even after the price cap increase. Ultimately this is a supply issue, it has nothing to do with the middle men. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 5th Feb 2022 10:09am)
  • France isn't utterly dependent on natural gas for electricity because they invested heavily in nuclear energy. We don't have that luxury. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 5th Feb 2022 10:05am)
  • >> ultimately this is a supply issue > >No, it's an issue which the suppliers have made an active choice to pass on the rising cost to consumers instead of do what they're supposed to and take a hit to their profits while the cost of resources is high. companies aren't entitled to always make a profit, especially not when they're providing essential services like gas, electricity and telecoms. [27 UK utility companies have gone bust in the past six months alone](https://www.forbes.com/uk/advisor/energy/failed-uk-energy-suppliers-update/). This has happened because with the price cap, they haven't been able to pass on their extra costs. Some firms had lots of longer term hedges against natural gas price rises for the time being, those that didn't have gone bankrupt. Now the price cap is adjusting, so they will be able to pass on *some* of their increased costs. If the firms were nationalised, the multi billion pound losses they've been running would still have to come from somewhere. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 5th Feb 2022 5:02pm)
  • So Bulb is basically being run by the government at the mo while the business is wound up and its customers transferred elsewhere. So yeah your energy use is currently mostly paid for by taxation, as Bulb in administration is still running huge losses due to the price cap. Bulb ended up getting treated a bit differently because none of the major energy companies could afford to take the risk of taking on 1.7 million hugely loss-generating accounts (to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds per month) last September. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 5th Feb 2022 5:38pm)
  • Lol, I spent enough time yesterday explaining how vaccines work to you, I'm not going to waste time today explaining the energy makeup of major European states, that's taking the piss. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 5th Feb 2022 6:59pm)
  • Aye, because what we all need right now is yet another crippling expense. Congestion charge makes sense in London because the public transport is world-class and really well connected, and because traffic would otherwise be absolutely crippling. Glasgow traffic isn't absolutely crippling, and for many people that commute in the public transport doesn't connect up well. by SpeedflyChris (Sat 21st May 2022 10:12pm)
