  • I went to West End Cycles several days ago and I couldn't recommend the place more. It was just the pedals on my bike that needed replacing but despite the guy having a right job getting the old ones off - and even having to resort to a blowtorch - he didn't even charge me for labour, just the cost of the new pedals. Lovely guy too and I was back out cycling within 20 minutes. It's on Chancellor Street just off Byres Road if I've convinced you and you want to check it out. by cuteablepine29 (Mon 9th Aug 2021 11:17am)
  • I've just now had a pretty bad experience with Talk Talk. WiFi died in my area during Eunice last Thursday and on Friday I talked to an agent (via Twitter dms!) who was able to diagnose that it was network issue and send out an engineer to get it sorted. Woke up to a text on Saturday saying engineers sorted it but it may take a few days to get working again. We're students so ofc we procrastinated phoning and waiting a good few days. But it got to yesterday (Tuesday) and we've all just about ran out of data so we phoned and they maintained that the issue was no longer on their end and began rattling through every obvious home fix you can think of for about an hour - I had no idea there were so many iterations of 'turn the router off and on again'! Eventually said they'd do more tests and phone back in 20 mins. They phoned back 5 hours later to say they'll send an engineer around today. So I'll let you know if it does get sorted this morning but this has certainly been a massive palaver. Been good until this tho by cuteablepine29 (Wed 23rd Feb 2022 12:57am)

  • On this, polling has shown that the Scottish Population isn't significantly more leftwing than the English population based on economic and social values. The Conservative party certainly has a bad reputation here but it's more leftwing good luck than anything that the only large party on the yes side of the country's biggest political issue is also a leftwing party. My biggest fear about an independent Scotland is that the SNP would fracture and a decent share of their voters go to a not-Tory rightwing party - a bit like the SNP of old. We'd be left probably with a dutch-esc parliament which sits centre right. Yes we'd have a parliament with PR but we also wouldn't have the economic engine of London to pay for generous policies. I love that we've got a generous fairly left wing govt here in Scotland atm and am actually worried that independence would take this away by cuteablepine29 (Tue 3rd May 2022 1:10am)
  • I applied online and it took the best part of a month for my application to be verified. Once it was I got the card within 2 days. On the other hand people I know who applied through their library got through the whole process within days and had their card that same week. TL;DR, get it sorted at your library by cuteablepine29 (Tue 3rd May 2022 2:45pm)

  • If you're going to be staying in Glasgow Uni's own student halls then you'll get free access to a UofG Sport membership and therefore access to the uni gym and to sports union affiliated clubs, including the Muay Thai club. Means you'd be able to go for a few weeks and see if it works for you, free of cost. You'd still have to pay the club's own membership but this is usually fairly inexpensive. Equally, at the beginning of semester 1 clubs are all keen to recruit new Freshers and will let you come to taster sessions and even a few weeks of normal sessions before expecting you to pay membership. At that point you'd have to make sure you've got the afforementied UofG Sport membership, which if you're not at uni halls you'd have to buy (~£150 for the year), and then also get the club membership. If you try it out and it's not a good fit then probs best to go out with the uni. Although I've heard very good things about the Muay Thai club and can personally vouch for how good the unis sports clubs are for making pals and putting on regular socials! So TLDR, you can definitely try out the uni club for a couple weeks for free and then decide if paying for the memberships etc is worth it for you, and if not, go one in the community instead. Hope that helps by cuteablepine29 (Tue 21st Jun 2022 3:55pm)
  • To be fair, back home on the east coast the people there will regularly refer to folk from Glasgow as weegies. Usually in a weird, derogatory and othering sort of way though by cuteablepine29 (Wed 22nd Jun 2022 10:03pm)
  • In the west end this is a rarer and rarer find. Many, many landlords would rather just have a ballroom for a bedroom and get and extra £500-600 a month than give their tenants a living room. Any decent flats with living rooms, particularly HMOs, get nabbed within minutes by cuteablepine29 (Mon 27th Jun 2022 2:11pm)
  • Lismore 👑 Aragon, Laurieston, Arlington and Gallus too by cuteablepine29 (Sun 3rd Jul 2022 12:38am)
  • Bear in mind the West End literally wouldn't function if it wasn't for the army of students and young people working whatever hours we can manage in the places you like to go out to and yet still spending 100% of our student loan (often plus a lot more) or like 50-60% of a full-time hours income just to pay rent. The w.end's economy absolutely relies on our relatively cheap labour to function and everyone who moans about entitled students still benefits from the subsequently cheaper prices. If we all listened to this sub and moved to Paisley or Motherwell or whatever I bet it wouldn't be half as nice of a night out here (and we'd all still be skint having to commute to uni everyday). by cuteablepine29 (Sun 3rd Jul 2022 6:18pm)

  • Yep, most of us anglophones have no idea the floor area of our properties (especially if we're renting) and instead use the number of bedrooms an bathrooms as the de facto official measure of size. This leads to insane situations such as the flat move I've just made (from one 3 bed flat to another) where the new rent is 20% cheaper but the floorspace of the flat is at least 50% (!!) larger - in the west end too. by cuteablepine29 (Wed 6th Jul 2022 7:44pm)
  • At Primavera Sound Barcelona this year I arrived at half 5 for an artist that was on at like 10, didn't get in until halfway through the next at at 1am. At least the queues were a nice atmosphere which I'm not sure the trnsmt ones would've been Edit: not insinuating this is, nor the trnsmt queues were acceptable. This was an event in a 2k capacity venue which 100k+ attendees had free access to so I was well prepared for such a wait by cuteablepine29 (Mon 11th Jul 2022 7:46pm)

  • Mate 2010 was 12 years ago, move on. 'Benefits Culture' is nothing more than a bs narrative to empower an agenda of austerity, the stripping of public services and the transfer of national wealth up from the many and into the hands of an increasingly small few. Physically/mentally disabled people, carers, parents etc aren't the root of the problem and it's absolute nonsense to say they are. • Filtering through cars at the red light is good practice and is why there's a bike box right in front of the lights. Means there's much less danger of us getting caught in a blind spot and squished when a car turns left etc by cuteablepine29 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 7:43pm)
  • Mate if it's a four way junction with a two way light system and I've got to right turn, you fucking bet I'm going to take the opportunity to do that turn if I can guarantee the junction is empty rather than having to navigate two different streams of vehicles. If it's during the pedestrian scramble then I'll wait until they're mostly crossed. Yes its breaking the rules but it's much safer for me If it's a four way system, there's a bike box and I can get to the front of the left lane i.e. Tenents Bar junction, then I'll obvs wait but this is often not the vase. by cuteablepine29 (Wed 17th Aug 2022 7:41pm)
  • Back in the glory days of UberEats in summer '21, I could do £15/h every friday and saturday night by only really doing deliveries in the West End, in Town, and between the two. • this solution fails to address that most student halls are much more expensive than renting privately and that many students don't want to live in a corridor or bedrooms - even if it does have a disco room or gym or whatever. realisitcally no private developer will fork out to build a huge student accom, usually on vv expensive land, unless they know they can charge extortionate rents. not like the council has the means, nor the state the will to intervene on this front. by cuteablepine29 (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 1:49pm)
  • Glasgow Uni student here with some insights into why there's so many private student halls yet still a student housing crisis and reasons as to why this year is so bad: generally, over the past few years, private halls have been getting fully booked around 9 months pior to uni starting. from what i can tell this is mostly from well organised international students whose families have the means to pay the huge rents and who understand that they will be filled with mostly internationals like themselves. its clearly an attractive offer for them, giving them all the mod cons and the certianty of having a place well before moving. the fact that Glasgow and Strathclyde's admission of international students has increased basically in line with these halls being built has meant that they are able to comtinually reach capacity - especially thanks to the many deferred from 2020/21 entries due to covid. conversely, most uk nationals (myself and friends included) cannot really afford the rents of private halls and wouldn't want to book one 9 months in advance as one would assume that 9 months would be long enough to find a place. and yes, generally if you were able to be in glasgow to flat hunt at around April and May (when many flats were being vacated by grads) then you'd have a place - I personally havent moved home since leaving halls as I've been holding onto flats and working during summer to pay for them. the problem this year, crucially, is that Glasgow Uni's accomodation guarantee collapsed and so there has been a huge influx of people who were anticipating getting halls and now have to instead find a place at short-notice, often when they are not even in the country. to a lesser extent, last year being a particularly large student influx has also meant that the usual private housing supply has been pressed more than usual, making it harder to find a flat in the first place and leaving more returning students to flat-hunt remotely over the summer - a time when the supply always tends to dry up and demand skyrockets due to other factors like admissions through clearning, students retuening from international exchange etc. everyone i know who is a uk nat and who has struggled with getting a flat as term starts has generally left it until summer to sort out, only to find the demand skyrocketing and supply dwindling - rent bidding is increasingly commom at this time of year that should explain, on an individual level, how this has happened. on a macro level, clearly, it is a shortage of housing which is an extension of the national housing crisis - which itself is already worst in large cities with growing professional workforces i.e. university cities. by cuteablepine29 (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 2:31pm)
  • true by cuteablepine29 (Thu 22nd Sep 2022 9:03pm)
  • doubt it mate, current inflation is much more domestic fiscal policy related than due to more expensive imports etc. government spent £600bn over covid and most of it went to the rich - causing the rest of us to get poorer due to the resulting inflation by cuteablepine29 (Mon 10th Oct 2022 7:17pm)
  • in your mind what then constitutes a good school? by cuteablepine29 (Sun 23rd Oct 2022 10:02pm)
  • Doesn't mean anything imo. Me and a number of my pals got unconditionals to uni by the end of 5th year and our school ranks a fair bit worse than that. Obviously on a macro perspective going to a worse school worsens your odds of success - but as with everything those who put in the work at my school saw success while those who did not didn't. At least at my school our terrible results seemed more indicative of a chorionic lack of ambition (amongst students and staff) rather than constant dysfunction in the classroom (after 3rd year anyway). Obviously I can't speak for the situation at a school I didn't attend but I do believe rankings are quite misleading. by cuteablepine29 (Tue 27th Dec 2022 9:20pm)
